Hi, I am Alex Tabarrok,

Welcome to Marginal
Revolution University

Since launching our online
education platform

people have been asking Tyler and I

Why are putting all
this time and effort

and then giving away your
product to the world for free?

Let me give you two answers:

First, whether it's been in the classroom,

or our blog,
Marginal Revolution,

or our textbook "Modern
principles of Economics",

Tyler and I have always been
motivated by the fact

that we think learning Economics
is important

We think learning Economics

can make the world a better place

and with our first course on MRUniversity,
Development Economics,

we are asking what is perhaps
the most important question

in all of the Economics

Why are some countries rich,
while other countries are poor?

For billions of people that is
a life and death question,

and we think that Economics
has something to add to that question

and we are really excited
about the opportunity

to reach a global audience

Second, in putting together these courses

Tyler and I have realized that

online education really improves
the efficiency of learning.

So, in a classroom, for example,
professors often repeat themselves

but in the online world

you are in control.

You get to decide what to repeat
and how much to repeat

for your own best understanding.

That's one of the reasons why
we think we can offer

a full course in Development Economics

and in other subjects
in less than half the time.

So we are really excited about

all of the opportunities
from online education.
