Cognitive dissonance | Ash Donaldson | TEDxCanberra

    So, back in the early 1990s,
    I was a training commercial pilot

    with hair that probably produced more lift
    than most of the small aircrafts I flew.

    Anyway, one day,
    my instructor Bob came out,
  • 0:24 - 0:29
    and he said, "Ash, today, I'm going
    to instruct you in instrument flying."
  • 0:30 - 0:33
    This was pretty exciting
    because there are two flavors of flying.
  • 0:33 - 0:35
    There's "visual" where you can see
  • 0:35 - 0:38
    the horizon ahead of you
    and what's below you,
  • 0:38 - 0:41
    which is kind of for the rookie
    pilots and weekend pilots.
  • 0:41 - 0:43
    Then there's "instrument flying."
  • 0:43 - 0:46
    Instrument flying
    is for the professionals.
  • 0:46 - 0:48
    That's being able
    to punch into the clouds.
  • 0:48 - 0:50
    So I was pretty excited about this.
  • 0:51 - 0:55
    Anyway, we went out,
    we did our preflight briefing
  • 0:55 - 0:59
    and grabbed a little Cessna 152,
  • 0:59 - 1:01
    took off, went out
    to the southern training area,
  • 1:01 - 1:03
    got set up at 5,000 feet.
  • 1:04 - 1:06
    And Bob whacked this on me.
  • 1:06 - 1:08
    (Laughter)
  • 1:09 - 1:13
    This little plastic contraption
    is known as "the hood,"
  • 1:13 - 1:18
    and it constrains the pilot's
    view to their six instruments.
  • 1:19 - 1:22
    Bob said, "Okay, now I want
    you to fly straight and level
  • 1:22 - 1:24
    just by instruments."
  • 1:24 - 1:27
    I did that, it was pretty easy.
    I was pretty good at this stuff.
  • 1:27 - 1:29
    (Laughter)
  • 1:29 - 1:31
    Then he said, "Okay, you did well Ash.
  • 1:31 - 1:35
    I want you to maintain 5,000 feet
    and perform a standard right turn."
  • 1:36 - 1:37
    Now, this was a bit more difficult.
  • 1:37 - 1:41
    I had to organize to work
    the pedals and the controls.
  • 1:41 - 1:43
    At the same time, I was
    scanning all these instruments
  • 1:43 - 1:49
    without the wealth of information
    from the visual sphere outside.
  • 1:50 - 1:53
    But I got it. It was pretty good.
    I was feeling pretty cocky.
  • 1:54 - 1:56
    And he said, "Okay, done well.
  • 1:56 - 1:58
    Roll out of that
    into straight and level again."
  • 1:58 - 2:01
    So I rolled out into straight and level.
  • 2:01 - 2:06
    But my artificial horizon
    wasn't quite right.
  • 2:06 - 2:08
    It was a bit off.
  • 2:08 - 2:10
    So I looked over
    at my turn and slip indicator
  • 2:10 - 2:13
    and the ball was out of it,
    so I kicked in a bit of rudder.
  • 2:13 - 2:15
    My directional gyro started moving.
  • 2:15 - 2:19
    I was flying straight and level,
    but my instruments were failing.
  • 2:19 - 2:21
    The altimeter started rising.
  • 2:21 - 2:24
    Directional gyro was spinning faster.
  • 2:24 - 2:27
    The artificial horizon
    just slipped right off,
  • 2:27 - 2:31
    the whole dial,
    and Bob whipped my hood off.
  • 2:32 - 2:37
    I'd entered what is known
    as "the graveyard spiral."
  • 2:38 - 2:41
    Now in a recent study,
  • 2:41 - 2:44
    the average pilot
    with no instrument flight training,
  • 2:45 - 2:49
    punching into clouds
    lasts a mere 178 seconds.
  • 2:49 - 2:53
    That's two seconds shy of three minutes
  • 2:53 - 2:55
    before spiraling to their death.
  • 2:57 - 3:01
    Fair enough, my vestibular
    senses had tricked me.
  • 3:01 - 3:05
    The sense that tells me
    which way is up, had tricked me,
  • 3:05 - 3:07
    and Bob got me good with it.
  • 3:07 - 3:09
    Bob taught me a good lesson.
  • 3:09 - 3:11
    Next time I'll know:
    trust the instruments.
  • 3:12 - 3:14
    So we went up for the next lesson,
  • 3:14 - 3:16
    and I failed,
  • 3:16 - 3:19
    and the next lesson, and the next lesson.
  • 3:20 - 3:22
    This was frustrating me.
  • 3:22 - 3:25
    I considered myself
    a good, confident pilot.
  • 3:26 - 3:29
    Yet I couldn't accept
    the evidence in front of me.
  • 3:29 - 3:31
    My intuition took over every time.
  • 3:31 - 3:34
    My brain kept on making up these excuses:
  • 3:34 - 3:38
    "Oh, this aircraft has
    a dodgy vacuum pump."
  • 3:38 - 3:42
    "The static intakes
    on these little tomahawks
  • 3:42 - 3:45
    always blocks up,
    the instruments are failing."
  • 3:45 - 3:50
    I knew the instruments weren't failing,
    but I couldn't seem to accept it.
  • 3:52 - 3:56
    It's amazing where we're
    often taught or told
  • 3:56 - 3:59
    how wonderful and powerful
  • 3:59 - 4:03
    the hundred billion or so neurons
    that make up our mind are.
  • 4:03 - 4:08
    Yet, we rarely discuss the cognitive
    shortcomings that we have.
  • 4:08 - 4:11
    I mean, at school I was
    taught how the mind works.
  • 4:12 - 4:15
    It's very much like
    a modern laptop computer.
  • 4:16 - 4:19
    You have your high definition video camera
  • 4:19 - 4:22
    and your mic that takes
    in everything around you.
  • 4:22 - 4:27
    You've got everything then
    stored to memory, bit for bit,
  • 4:27 - 4:31
    perfectly written to data
    on your hard drive.
  • 4:31 - 4:36
    And our brains process things
    in a very logical fashion,
  • 4:36 - 4:40
    like we should all have Intel Inside
    stickers on our foreheads.
  • 4:41 - 4:44
    This is the metaphor that's used,
  • 4:44 - 4:46
    but it's not a very good metaphor.
  • 4:46 - 4:48
    In fact, it's completely wrong.
  • 4:49 - 4:54
    You see, our senses aren't like
    high-def recording equipment.
  • 4:55 - 4:58
    We only take in snippets
    of the information,
  • 4:58 - 5:01
    and our mind fills in the gaps for us.
  • 5:01 - 5:04
    As a pilot we're taught
    a whole lot of tips and tricks
  • 5:04 - 5:07
    to get around human limitations.
  • 5:07 - 5:11
    Things like when we want
    to find an aircraft in the sky,
  • 5:12 - 5:14
    we've got to break it up into quadrants.
  • 5:14 - 5:18
    You see, our eyes only see
    this much clearly at any one time.
  • 5:18 - 5:21
    It's hard to grasp,
    but this is what we see.
  • 5:22 - 5:25
    Our eyes dart around
    at a thousand degrees a second,
  • 5:25 - 5:27
    that what's called "a saccade."
  • 5:27 - 5:31
    Our mind fills in the rest of the picture
    with what it expects to see there.
  • 5:31 - 5:35
    So if you're looking up at the sky,
    it expects to see a lot of blue.
  • 5:36 - 5:38
    You have to actually break
    up the sky into quadrants
  • 5:38 - 5:43
    and saccade across
    until the aircraft lands
  • 5:43 - 5:48
    within the focus of those saccades,
    before you'll see the aircraft.
  • 5:49 - 5:51
    And it's not just our visual
    senses that work like this.
  • 5:51 - 5:53
    All of our senses work like this.
  • 5:54 - 5:58
    Our mind just fills in the gaps for us
    without us being aware of it.
  • 5:58 - 6:01
    That's why illusions work.
  • 6:01 - 6:07
    That's why Simon takes great delight
    in knowing how your perception works
  • 6:07 - 6:11
    and being able to fool you,
    being able to manipulate that.
  • 6:12 - 6:16
    And up here, it doesn't
    take in everything.
  • 6:16 - 6:19
    It doesn't store everything to memory.
  • 6:19 - 6:25
    It takes snippets,
    little grabs of feelings,
  • 6:25 - 6:28
    of sights, sounds,
    tastes, smells, emotions.
  • 6:29 - 6:33
    And then it pieces them together
    when you recall a memory.
  • 6:33 - 6:37
    When it pieces them together,
    it makes up the bits in between again.
  • 6:38 - 6:40
    It creates a movie,
  • 6:40 - 6:43
    only the movie is based on a true story.
  • 6:44 - 6:49
    The next time you recall that same event,
    you're recalling it from that memory,
  • 6:49 - 6:52
    taking snippets of that memory
    and piecing it together again.
  • 6:52 - 6:57
    So next time, it's actually
    more like a screenplay
  • 6:57 - 7:00
    based on a book based on a true story.
  • 7:01 - 7:03
    Each time you remember
    something, it changes a bit more.
  • 7:04 - 7:06
    It takes one more step away from reality,
  • 7:06 - 7:10
    even if it feels like you
    remember it clear as day.
  • 7:11 - 7:15
    And our cognitions, the way
    we think, they're adapted.
  • 7:15 - 7:21
    We evolved to be really good
    at surviving in small social groups,
  • 7:22 - 7:24
    for being able to match patterns,
  • 7:24 - 7:29
    for being able to keep track
    of social relationships -
  • 7:29 - 7:31
    not very good at logic though.
  • 7:33 - 7:35
    That horrible feeling I experienced
  • 7:35 - 7:41
    when I couldn't get my instinct
  • 7:41 - 7:43
    to match up with
    the evidence in front of me,
  • 7:43 - 7:45
    that's known as "cognitive dissonance."
  • 7:46 - 7:48
    Now cognitive dissonance
  • 7:48 - 7:52
    is when your mind tries to hold
    two conflicting ideas simultaneously.
  • 7:53 - 7:55
    It gives you a horrible feeling.
  • 7:55 - 7:58
    It'll be a negative feeling,
    it'll be feeling sick.
  • 7:59 - 8:02
    It'll be feeling anxious or even angry.
  • 8:04 - 8:06
    Cognitive dissonance is the mechanism
  • 8:06 - 8:11
    by which we start being
    able to, I don't know,
  • 8:11 - 8:15
    account for irrational
    behaviors like smoking.
  • 8:15 - 8:19
    I've got a friend Janine,
    very warm, intelligent lady.
  • 8:20 - 8:25
    She's very smart. She works
    as an intensive care nurse.
  • 8:26 - 8:29
    Everyday, she's looking after people
    with throat cancer and lung cancer
  • 8:29 - 8:31
    who are dying from smoking.
  • 8:31 - 8:36
    She knows the damage
    that it causes, yet she smokes.
  • 8:36 - 8:38
    I asked her why,
    she sat me down and said,
  • 8:38 - 8:43
    "Ash, I need to explain
    this to you: I'm a nurse.
  • 8:43 - 8:45
    I work long irregular hours.
  • 8:46 - 8:49
    I don't get to exercise.
    I don't get to eat well.
  • 8:50 - 8:53
    Smoking helps me keep down my weight!
  • 8:53 - 8:55
    (Laughter)
  • 8:56 - 9:00
    You think there are problems with people
    who have smoked for a long time,
  • 9:00 - 9:03
    you should see the long-term
    problems of obesity."
  • 9:03 - 9:07
    So just like that, she'd rationalized away
  • 9:07 - 9:11
    her behavior with her knowledge.
  • 9:13 - 9:16
    Cognitive dissonance
    does this in a number of ways.
  • 9:17 - 9:21
    Also, it's a great protector
    of our self-concept.
  • 9:21 - 9:23
    What we think of as
  • 9:23 - 9:28
    "I'm a good, moral, intelligent
    person," that self-concept,
  • 9:28 - 9:30
    it protects it for us.
  • 9:32 - 9:38
    This guy will never admit
    that he was wrong about invading Iraq,
  • 9:39 - 9:41
    not because he's evil,
  • 9:41 - 9:46
    but it's because he really thinks
    he wasn't wrong about invading Iraq.
  • 9:50 - 9:54
    He thinks of himself
    as a good moral Christian.
  • 9:54 - 9:56
    He was president of the United States.
  • 9:56 - 9:59
    He was leader of the free world.
    He was the good guys.
  • 10:01 - 10:06
    Unfortunately, he also
    set up the perfect context
  • 10:07 - 10:09
    for making bad decisions.
  • 10:09 - 10:11
    You see, George Bush
    was well-known
  • 10:11 - 10:16
    to fire or demote anyone
    who disagreed with his opinions.
  • 10:16 - 10:20
    So he cocooned himself,
    surrounded himself with yes-men.
  • 10:20 - 10:23
    He protected himself
    from cognitive dissonance.
  • 10:23 - 10:29
    So when he decided that there must
    be weapons of mass destruction in Iraq,
  • 10:29 - 10:32
    all his cronies went out
    and scoured the intelligence reports,
  • 10:32 - 10:35
    picking up the most tenuous
    little bits of information
  • 10:35 - 10:38
    and stringing them together
    to feed his belief
  • 10:38 - 10:41
    that there were weapons
    of mass destruction.
  • 10:43 - 10:45
    That's what is known
    as "confirmation bias,"
  • 10:46 - 10:48
    seeking confirming
    evidence of our beliefs
  • 10:48 - 10:54
    and disregarding or minimizing
    the impact of disconfirming evidence.
  • 10:55 - 10:57
    That's just one of the mechanisms.
  • 10:57 - 10:59
    It's one of the most common
    mechanisms that our brain uses
  • 10:59 - 11:02
    to protect us from cognitive dissonance.
  • 11:03 - 11:08
    But it's just one of many,
    many biases that we have.
  • 11:08 - 11:12
    In fact, you may be
    experiencing one right now.
  • 11:16 - 11:20
    Now these biases build up.
  • 11:21 - 11:23
    (Laughter)
  • 11:23 - 11:25
    That's why you're meant to be seeing.
  • 11:25 - 11:30
    These biases build up and attack
    our ability to reason logically.
  • 11:31 - 11:33
    And people take advantage of this.
  • 11:33 - 11:36
    Whole industries,
    billion-dollar industries,
  • 11:36 - 11:40
    are wrapped around our faulty reasoning.
  • 11:40 - 11:43
    Things like cosmetics,
  • 11:43 - 11:45
    anti-aging creams.
  • 11:46 - 11:47
    You're right!
  • 11:49 - 11:53
    Vitamins and supplements,
    well, you urinate them all out.
  • 11:53 - 11:55
    They don't boost your immune system.
  • 11:55 - 12:00
    If they did boost your immune system,
    you'd have an autoimmune disease.
  • 12:02 - 12:07
    Alternative health practices,
    aligning your energies,
  • 12:07 - 12:08
    we got rid of that concept
  • 12:08 - 12:11
    when we discovered
    the central nervous system.
  • 12:13 - 12:15
    Just the other day,
    I was on a train in Melbourne
  • 12:15 - 12:19
    and I spotted a young guy in a suit.
  • 12:19 - 12:24
    He was wearing one of these,
    it's a power band bracelet.
  • 12:28 - 12:33
    The makers of Power Balance claim
  • 12:33 - 12:37
    that this piece of silicon
    with a sticker on it
  • 12:37 - 12:39
    will make you stronger and more flexible.
  • 12:39 - 12:43
    Now on face value,
    that is laughable, it's silly,
  • 12:43 - 12:47
    but he probably didn't come to this belief
    from a claim like this.
  • 12:47 - 12:52
    He probably came to it from seeing
    one of his sports stars wearing it,
  • 12:52 - 12:56
    and then noticing other
    top athletes wearing it.
  • 12:57 - 12:59
    These things have to chip away.
  • 13:00 - 13:03
    Now Power Balance is smart
    enough to give away these
  • 13:03 - 13:08
    to every top athlete they can
    and sponsor key top athletes to wear them.
  • 13:10 - 13:11
    So he's had this.
  • 13:12 - 13:15
    He has formed an idea,
    and he goes and searches online.
  • 13:16 - 13:20
    Power Balance has littered
    YouTube and blogs
  • 13:20 - 13:23
    with testimonials and demonstrations
  • 13:23 - 13:26
    much like they have used
    for years in martial arts
  • 13:26 - 13:29
    and in applied kinesiology,
  • 13:29 - 13:34
    a simple trick to show
    that it makes you more balanced.
  • 13:36 - 13:38
    So he probably saw this stuff,
  • 13:38 - 13:41
    and that was the confirmation bias
    building up the belief,
  • 13:41 - 13:45
    and then he went out
    and spent 60 hard dollars
  • 13:45 - 13:48
    on a rubber band with a sticker on it.
  • 13:49 - 13:52
    That cemented his belief even further.
  • 13:52 - 13:55
    People then asked him,
    "Does that work for you?"
  • 13:55 - 13:57
    And he would recall a time
  • 13:57 - 14:00
    when he performed
    a bit better than normal,
  • 14:00 - 14:05
    and not recall the times
    when it was average or below average.
  • 14:06 - 14:07
    More confirmation bias!
  • 14:07 - 14:09
    When more people asked him,
  • 14:09 - 14:12
    he would keep recalling those same
    events of better performance,
  • 14:12 - 14:18
    except those events would now
    get even better, and even better,
  • 14:18 - 14:21
    making it legendary performance.
  • 14:22 - 14:28
    So his Power Balance bracelet
    is working, it is good.
  • 14:30 - 14:32
    Then someone might
    come up to him and say,
  • 14:32 - 14:35
    "You realize that they actually did
    some scientific tests.
  • 14:35 - 14:39
    Double blind showed
    that it's just a rubber band."
  • 14:41 - 14:45
    "- Science doesn't know everything.
    Don't be so closed minded.
  • 14:45 - 14:48
    You got to try it to understand!"
  • 14:49 - 14:52
    These are the types of things
    people will come up with
  • 14:52 - 14:55
    when their mind is painted into a corner.
  • 14:56 - 14:58
    And it's not just that.
  • 14:58 - 15:02
    When you come up against a hard
    or an unwinnable argument,
  • 15:02 - 15:05
    cognitive dissonance can cause anger.
  • 15:05 - 15:09
    If that argument
    is unwinnable on both sides,
  • 15:09 - 15:11
    it escalates to rage.
  • 15:11 - 15:15
    It can escalate to ideological wars,
  • 15:15 - 15:20
    people fighting to the death
    trying to prove their point,
  • 15:21 - 15:25
    trying to prove that their imagining frame
    is the real one, not yours.
  • 15:28 - 15:30
    It's not all doom and gloom
    though, there is hope.
  • 15:31 - 15:33
    Science is testament to that.
  • 15:33 - 15:37
    Now when you say "science," people
    have the wrong idea a lot of the times.
  • 15:37 - 15:42
    Science isn't a person
    or a thing, an organization.
  • 15:42 - 15:45
    Science is simply a process.
  • 15:46 - 15:51
    It's a process that was designed
    specifically to overcome our biases.
  • 15:53 - 15:54
    And as well as that process,
  • 15:54 - 15:58
    it's also the body of knowledge
    that results from the process.
  • 15:59 - 16:01
    The process is just known
    as "scientific method."
  • 16:01 - 16:04
    It's simply down to making a prediction,
  • 16:05 - 16:07
    testing that prediction,
  • 16:07 - 16:10
    and then coming up with your conclusions,
  • 16:10 - 16:13
    but most importantly being transparent
    about how you did it all
  • 16:13 - 16:16
    so other people
    can pick apart your arguments,
  • 16:16 - 16:21
    other people can test and see
    if you reasoned correctly.
  • 16:22 - 16:25
    It's a very important part of it.
  • 16:26 - 16:31
    And enough people, like Temple said,
    enough people are working on this.
  • 16:31 - 16:35
    They spend their whole lifetimes
    doing small detailed work,
  • 16:35 - 16:38
    making tiny little
    increments in knowledge.
  • 16:38 - 16:41
    It's none of these eureka
    moments that you hear about.
  • 16:41 - 16:44
    It's tiny increments but it all goes
    into a pool of knowledge.
  • 16:44 - 16:46
    And because of that pool of knowledge,
  • 16:46 - 16:50
    in medicine alone, I've never
    seen a child with smallpox.
  • 16:50 - 16:54
    I've never seen a child
    afflicted by polio.
  • 16:54 - 16:59
    I've never had a loved one
    die of measles or diptheria.
  • 17:00 - 17:05
    These killed millions of people
    until we figured out vaccines for them.
  • 17:05 - 17:09
    And closer to home,
    this old fellow, my dad.
  • 17:10 - 17:14
    I should have lost him,
    twice in the last 15 years.
  • 17:14 - 17:18
    He actually had a tube
    fed through his groin
  • 17:18 - 17:23
    and a balloon pulled through his heart
    to flatten the fatty deposits in there,
  • 17:23 - 17:26
    saving him from having
    another massive heart attack.
  • 17:27 - 17:33
    He also had tuberculosis injected
    into his bladder a number of times
  • 17:33 - 17:36
    to kill the cancer
    that was growing there.
  • 17:36 - 17:41
    just recent advances in science
    that kept him around with me today.
  • 17:41 - 17:43
    And it's not just in the area of health
  • 17:43 - 17:47
    that this way of thinking
    is useful for us.
  • 17:47 - 17:51
    Getting rid of these misunderstandings,
  • 17:51 - 17:55
    actually knowing about your
    brain and how it's tricking you,
  • 17:55 - 17:59
    compensating for cognitive
    dissonance and cognitive biases ;
  • 18:00 - 18:02
    it's everything, any
    type of decision making
  • 18:02 - 18:06
    from deciding on a consumer product,
  • 18:06 - 18:09
    fighting with your partner,
    to public policy ;
  • 18:10 - 18:12
    accounting for all these cognitive biases
  • 18:12 - 18:16
    and being open about how
    you reach your conclusions
  • 18:16 - 18:19
    is a useful and powerful thing,
    and we should start with the schools.
  • 18:20 - 18:23
    We should start getting rid of these
    outdated metaphors for how we think,
  • 18:23 - 18:27
    and teach kids how we actually do think.
  • 18:27 - 18:31
    If we can do that,
    they'll appreciate science more.
  • 18:33 - 18:35
    Just like when I was a pilot,
  • 18:35 - 18:39
    it was hard for me
    to get over this whole thing.
  • 18:39 - 18:42
    There was many white-knuckled,
    sweat-soaked flights
  • 18:42 - 18:45
    for me to be able to get over
  • 18:45 - 18:49
    my own internal battle
    and trust my instruments.
  • 18:50 - 18:52
    We can all actually go
    through this process.
  • 18:52 - 18:57
    We can all learn not to start
    with conclusions and find evidence.
  • 18:57 - 19:02
    We can learn to start with evidence,
    evaluate it, and come to a conclusion.
  • 19:03 - 19:06
    We can all learn to use
    our brains more effectively
  • 19:06 - 19:09
    and I think that's
    an idea worth spreading.
