The Danger of Going to Unbiblical Extremes - Kevin Williams

  • 0:00 - 0:03
What are some of the most subtle pitfalls
  • 0:03 - 0:04
    and attacks from the devil
  • 0:04 - 0:07
that you can warn others about?
  • 0:07 - 0:11
    Kevin: Well, of course,
    the devil's crafty.
  • 0:11 - 0:13
I think one of the pitfalls
  • 0:13 - 0:16
is taking Christians to an extreme.
  • 0:16 - 0:20
They go from one extreme to another
  • 0:20 - 0:21
    all the time.
  • 0:21 - 0:23
    As Lloyd-Jones said,
  • 0:23 - 0:25
it doesn't matter what extreme you're on,
  • 0:25 - 0:28
the devil's always at the end of it.
  • 0:28 - 0:32
People think a church is too big,
  • 0:32 - 0:35
so they go another extreme of:
  • 0:35 - 0:38
well, we're going to meet in a house.
  • 0:38 - 0:42
    (incomplete thought)
  • 0:42 - 0:45
The other pitfall of the devil
  • 0:45 - 0:47
    is "only-isms."
  • 0:47 - 0:50
What I mean is it has to do
  • 0:50 - 0:52
    with getting out of balance.
  • 0:52 - 0:54
It's when they make minor things
  • 0:54 - 0:56
    major things.
  • 0:56 - 0:59
Being a Christian or the essential thing
  • 0:59 - 1:02
is you've got to be home schooling,
  • 1:02 - 1:05
    or you've got to be
    doing street evangelism,
  • 1:05 - 1:08
or it can be so many things,
  • 1:08 - 1:11
but it's not centered upon Christ.
  • 1:11 - 1:13
    So I think definitely
  • 1:13 - 1:14
    taking people to extremes;
  • 1:14 - 1:16
    getting people out of balance
  • 1:16 - 1:17
    is the big problem.
  • 1:17 - 1:19
    Question: And personally, yourself,
  • 1:19 - 1:20
    when you were saved -
  • 1:20 - 1:22
we're all fighting to be balanced -
  • 1:22 - 1:25
    are there times you felt
    like you got off balance?
  • 1:25 - 1:27
And what happened to make you see
  • 1:27 - 1:29
    you were getting off balance?
  • 1:29 - 1:33
    Kevin: One thing that the
    Lord's always shown me
  • 1:33 - 1:35
    and has been faithful when
    I have got off balance,
  • 1:35 - 1:39
normally by seeing people who are
  • 1:39 - 1:41
    obviously Christians; godly men
  • 1:41 - 1:44
who have a different opinion from me
  • 1:44 - 1:46
and they're not off balance like me.
  • 1:46 - 1:49
    And you start to realize,
    hang on a minute,
  • 1:49 - 1:52
    there's maybe something
    wrong with me here.
  • 1:52 - 1:54
We've got to have that humility.
  • 1:54 - 1:55
    I think of the examples
  • 1:55 - 2:01
when Jesus was exhausted by the well
  • 2:01 - 2:04
    in John's Gospel there,
  • 2:04 - 2:06
    and of course, His
    disciples went to get Him
  • 2:06 - 2:07
    something to eat.
  • 2:07 - 2:09
And He's talking to that woman there
  • 2:09 - 2:11
and it led to her salvation
    and many others.
  • 2:11 - 2:13
But when His disciples came back,
  • 2:13 - 2:15
    it says they couldn't understand
  • 2:15 - 2:17
why He was talking to a woman,
  • 2:17 - 2:20
    let alone a Samaritan woman.
  • 2:20 - 2:23
    But it also says they
    dared not question Him.
  • 2:23 - 2:25
You see, their conscience was going off,
  • 2:25 - 2:27
saying He shouldn't be doing that!
  • 2:27 - 2:29
    Why is He doing that?
  • 2:29 - 2:30
But I think they'd learned enough
  • 2:30 - 2:32
    about holiness to say,
  • 2:32 - 2:35
    well, this guy's maybe a
    little more holy than me.
  • 2:35 - 2:37
I better keep my mouth quiet here.
  • 2:37 - 2:40
And that has really helped me
  • 2:40 - 2:43
    when I'm with other brothers
  • 2:43 - 2:46
    more mature over the years,
  • 2:46 - 2:51
and to realize maybe they know a bit
  • 2:51 - 2:54
    more about holiness than me.
  • 2:54 - 2:58
    (incomplete thought)
