How to encrypt you data - easily explained
-
In recent years the capacity of our harddisks,
-
USB drives and sd-cards has increased rapidly.
-
Which means we carry more data around with us.
-
Which is handy.
-
But leads to two big problems if we lose a USB-Stick or a laptop.
-
Of course replacing a device can be quite expensive.
-
But atleast a it is possible.
-
Even worse is the uncertainty of what could happen to your lost data.
-
Especially if you lost important files.
-
Or personal files that belong to you or someone else.
-
But even for very big harddrives,
-
USB-Sticks and external harddrives
-
you can solve both problems with one solution:
-
With encryption.
-
With a program like "Truecrypt" you can
-
either encrypt the full storage medium
-
or simply create so called
-
"encrypted file containers".
-
An encrypted harddisk or such a "file container"
-
can be compared to a "digital" safe.
-
Which you can only open with the right combination.
-
So how does this solve both issues?
-
Once you have saved your data in an encrypted file container
-
you can create as many copies as you like.
-
Which makes it much easier
-
to spread those containers on different devices.
-
You can save them at home,
-
give them to your friends,
-
or if absolutely neccessary in the "cloud".
-
Just like most IT-experts say:
-
Data only exists
-
if it's saved in atleast 3 different locations.
-
So even if you lose a drive
-
because your laptop gets stolen
-
or your house burns down
-
or a magpie is stealing your brand new USB-Stick
-
You'll still sleep save and sound
-
because you are the only person
-
that knows the passwort
-
and can read your data.
-
So here's a short explanation
-
how to create such a container
-
so you can sleep well.
-
First you have to download "Truecrypt"
-
from a site that you trust.
-
You can find some links in the video description.
-
Once you have it installed and started
-
you can click on "create volume" which
-
opens a simple "wizard"
-
This will guide you through the process step by step.
-
Most of the options are self explaining.
-
Some are explained by the program.
-
Once you have everything set up
-
"Truecrypt" asks you
-
to randomly move your mouse.
-
It will use your movements to
-
generate random numbers
-
which it needs for secure encryption.
-
Ok... that should be enough...
-
Really... even longer?
-
Ok...
-
Finally you are a proud owner
-
of a brand new encrypted file container.
-
The development of truecrypt has been
-
discontinued in 2014. But version
-
7.1a is still a good choice.
-
Because experts have read and checked
-
the whole sourcecode of this version
-
for back-doors and bugs.
-
And haven't found anything.
-
Alternatives to "Truecrypt" are
-
"Ciphershed" and "Veracrypt"
-
which are based on Truecrypt.
-
But these programs have not been
-
audited as well as truecrypt.
-
Check the video description for
-
a link to truecrypt and to a comparison
-
of different file encryption software.
-
But remember, encryption is only
-
as strong as your password.
-
So we recommend our very first film
-
which explains how
-
to come up with a good and easy password.
-
For the other parts of the series you
-
can click here
-
here and here.
-
Alright
-
have some fun with encryption
-
and don't forget to make backups!
-
Thank you for watching.
