Interval Ear Training: Aural Training Stage 4 of 5 (Guitar Lesson AU-104) How to play

  • 0:10 - 0:11
    Hey, how are you doing?
  • 0:11 - 0:12
    Justin here.
  • 0:12 - 0:15
Welcome to aural training, stage 4.
  • 0:15 - 0:18
    In this lesson today
we're going to be checking out another two intervals.
  • 0:19 - 0:23
This time it's going to be the minor 2nd
    and the minor 3rd interval.
  • 0:24 - 0:26
Both of these intervals are fairly easy to recognise,
  • 0:27 - 0:29
    because they're quite distinctive.
  • 0:30 - 0:32
The minor 2nd interval is one fret,
  • 0:32 - 0:34
    moving up one fret.
  • 0:34 - 0:35
    Sounds like this:
  • 0:35 - 0:37
    . . .
  • 0:37 - 0:39
    It's a bit like Jaws.
  • 0:39 - 0:48
    ...
  • 0:48 - 0:51
Little plastic fish jumps out of water,
    that kind of thing (plays).
  • 0:52 - 0:54
That is a minor 2nd (plays).
  • 0:55 - 0:56
    Same as a semitone (plays).
  • 0:58 - 0:59
    Moving up one fret.
  • 0:59 - 0:59
    Very, very simple.
  • 1:00 - 1:00
    Minor second.
  • 1:01 - 1:03
The other interval we're checking out is...
  • 1:03 - 1:04
    a minor third.
  • 1:04 - 1:09
    . . .
  • 1:09 - 1:11
Few ways of playing this one (plays).
  • 1:11 - 1:15
There's a few songs that have the minor 3rd interval
at the start of the melody.
  • 1:15 - 1:19
Probably the most commonly known one
    is Greensleeves.
  • 1:19 - 1:23
    . . .
  • 1:23 - 1:24
    That interval:
  • 1:24 - 1:30
    . . .
  • 1:30 - 1:34
    OK, let's have a look at a close-up
of how to play these intervals.
  • 1:35 - 1:37
OK, start off with the minor 2nd.
  • 1:37 - 1:39
This is a really difficult one (plays).
  • 1:39 - 1:41
    There's your root note (plays).
  • 1:41 - 1:42
    That's it.
    It's up one fret.
  • 1:43 - 1:45
    . . .
  • 1:45 - 1:47
    It's really hard one,
    to spot that one.
  • 1:47 - 1:48
    ...
  • 1:49 - 1:50
    OK, that's a minor second.
  • 1:50 - 1:51
    . . .
  • 1:51 - 1:52
That's the name of the interval.
  • 1:52 - 1:53
    One semitone.
  • 1:53 - 1:54
    ...
  • 1:54 - 1:55
    Very simple.
  • 1:55 - 1:57
Other one is a minor third.
  • 1:57 - 1:58
There's two common ways of playing this.
  • 1:59 - 2:00
    First of all (plays),
  • 2:00 - 2:03
is to use (plays) one to fourth finger.
  • 2:04 - 2:04
Of course you're going to go:
  • 2:05 - 2:06
    ...
  • 2:06 - 2:09
    So there's a two-fret gap there
with the other two fingers you've got (plays).
  • 2:10 - 2:12
Like the beginning of the minor pentatonic scale too.
  • 2:12 - 2:16
    . . .
  • 2:16 - 2:19
    That's a minor 3rd interval: (plays).
  • 2:19 - 2:20
You can also play it like this:
  • 2:20 - 2:21
    . . .
  • 2:22 - 2:25
If you want, you can move to the next string,
    back two frets.
  • 2:25 - 2:31
    . . .
  • 2:31 - 2:33
Up to you which way you want to play.
  • 2:33 - 2:33
    Same thing.
  • 2:33 - 2:36
    ...
  • 2:37 - 2:38
    OK, as I mentioned before,
  • 2:38 - 2:41
I think both of these intervals
have kind of got quite a distinct personality
  • 2:41 - 2:43
and are fairly easy to spot.
  • 2:43 - 2:46
So, we're going to start off with test Four A.
  • 2:46 - 2:49
It's just going to be minor 2nd and minor 3rd.
  • 2:49 - 2:51
Just to get your ear tuned in to those different intervals.
  • 2:51 - 2:53
Shouldn't be too difficult this one.
  • 2:53 - 2:55
And then in the next test, the Four B,
  • 2:55 - 2:58
    we're going to include
all of the intervals that we've done previous,
  • 2:58 - 3:00
so that one's going to be
    a little bit more challenging.
  • 3:00 - 3:02
Let's talk about that in a sec.
  • 3:02 - 3:05
Let's go for Four A, here we go.
  • 3:05 - 3:06
    Question 1:
  • 3:07 - 3:14
    . . .
  • 3:16 - 3:17
    Question 2:
  • 3:17 - 3:26
    . . .
  • 3:26 - 3:27
    Here is question 3:
  • 3:28 - 3:36
    . . .
  • 3:37 - 3:38
    Question 4:
  • 3:39 - 3:46
    . . .
  • 3:47 - 3:48
    Question 5:
  • 3:49 - 3:56
    . . .
  • 3:57 - 3:58
    Question 6:
  • 3:59 - 4:06
    . . .
  • 4:07 - 4:08
    Question 7:
  • 4:09 - 4:19
    . . .
  • 4:19 - 4:21
    Question 8:
  • 4:21 - 4:29
    . . .
  • 4:30 - 4:32
    Question 9:
  • 4:32 - 4:41
    . . .
  • 4:42 - 4:43
    And question 10:
  • 4:44 - 4:51
    . . .
  • 4:53 - 4:55
    Ok, off to the website,
    check your answers.
  • 4:55 - 4:58
If there are any that you got wrong,
    go and focus on those,
  • 4:58 - 5:00
play them through a few more times,
  • 5:00 - 5:01
try singing along if you can.
  • 5:02 - 5:05
Remember too that closing your eyes is really helpful,
  • 5:05 - 5:07
that it turns your ears on a little bit more.
  • 5:07 - 5:10
All that extra brain power that was going onto your eyes
is now going into your ears.
  • 5:10 - 5:12
So a lot of times you see people playing guitar
  • 5:12 - 5:14
    and not looking,
    with their eyes closed.
  • 5:14 - 5:15
It's because you can kind of...
  • 5:15 - 5:18
you can absorb more through your ears
    with your eyes closed, so...
  • 5:19 - 5:21
And plus I feel a little bit stupid here
with you looking at me doing this stuff
  • 5:22 - 5:23
while I'm sitting and kind of playing
    and looking around the room.
  • 5:23 - 5:26
    So, it's probably better
if you're not looking at me too, you know.
  • 5:26 - 5:28
You should be concentrating on the interval stuff.
  • 5:29 - 5:30
Ok, here we go, Four B.
  • 5:30 - 5:33
    We're now looking at,
    we've got choices between:
  • 5:33 - 5:35
    minor 2nd which was Jaws,
  • 5:35 - 5:37
major 2nd which was 'Happy Birthday,'
  • 5:37 - 5:41
minor 3rd which is 'Greensleeves' or whatever,
  • 5:42 - 5:44
    major 3rd which was...
  • 5:46 - 5:47
'Oh When The Saints Go Marching In,'
  • 5:48 - 5:51
perfect 4th which was The Wedding Song
    or 'Auld Lang Syne,'
  • 5:51 - 5:54
    a 5th which was, now I'm struggling,
    Superman *[should be Star Wars]*,
  • 5:54 - 5:56
a major 6th which was 'My Way'
  • 5:56 - 5:57
    and a major 7th.
  • 5:57 - 5:58
    So you've got...
  • 5:58 - 6:01
there's a whole lot of different intervals now
that you got to choose from.
  • 6:01 - 6:03
This is kind of hard work, guys.
  • 6:03 - 6:05
    So, you know... good luck!
  • 6:06 - 6:09
Here we go, question 1 of Four B:
  • 6:09 - 6:21
    . . .
  • 6:21 - 6:22
    Question 2:
  • 6:23 - 6:32
    . . .
  • 6:32 - 6:33
    Question 3:
  • 6:34 - 6:45
    . . .
  • 6:45 - 6:46
    Question 4:
  • 6:46 - 6:56
    . . .
  • 6:56 - 6:57
    Question 5:
  • 6:58 - 7:07
    . . .
  • 7:07 - 7:09
    Question 6:
  • 7:09 - 7:18
    . . .
  • 7:19 - 7:20
    Question 7:
  • 7:20 - 7:30
    . . .
  • 7:30 - 7:31
    Question 8:
  • 7:32 - 7:42
    . . .
  • 7:42 - 7:44
    Question 9:
  • 7:44 - 7:53
    . . .
  • 7:53 - 7:55
    And question 10:
  • 7:55 - 8:07
    . . .
  • 8:08 - 8:10
Hope that went OK for you,
    go and check your answers.
  • 8:11 - 8:14
    Remember to practice the ones
    that you're struggling with.
  • 8:14 - 8:18
Remember that you can also set
on the Justinguitar Ear Trainer on the website,
  • 8:19 - 8:21
    you can select certain intervals.
  • 8:21 - 8:24
If you really need to drill just a few
that you're getting wrong all the time,
  • 8:25 - 8:28
you can go to the custom option
    where you can, you know,
  • 8:28 - 8:30
you just tick off the intervals
    that you're struggling with
  • 8:30 - 8:33
and it will just test you
on those over and over again,
  • 8:33 - 8:34
    that's called Training Mode.
  • 8:34 - 8:38
And that's something really useful for you,
to use the Justinguitar Ear Trainer.
  • 8:38 - 8:42
    You know, lots of practice!
This is only a practice thing.
  • 8:42 - 8:44
The more that you do it,
the better you'll get at it.
  • 8:44 - 8:46
The things that help are the singing along with it,
  • 8:46 - 8:48
really listening to it and doing it.
  • 8:48 - 8:50
Either doing the Justinguitar Ear Trainer,
  • 8:50 - 8:52
    doing with me like this,
  • 8:52 - 8:55
    recording yourself playing different intervals
  • 8:55 - 8:56
    and, you know, testing yourself
  • 8:56 - 8:58
and/or getting your jam buddy to test you.
  • 8:58 - 9:01
They are the ways that will sort out your ear.
  • 9:01 - 9:04
    I'm sure that you'll find,
by time you get to this,
  • 9:04 - 9:05
and you've done the end of this little series
  • 9:05 - 9:08
and you've got your ear trained up a bit,
  • 9:08 - 9:09
you're going to find transcribing a whole lot easier,
  • 9:09 - 9:11
    you'll start to listen.
  • 9:11 - 9:16
I might even be so bold as to say that
you might start listening to music in a different way.
  • 9:16 - 9:19
    You'll start to hear
different levels within a music, you know.
  • 9:19 - 9:22
    Start listening to, you know,
every time you listen to music now
  • 9:22 - 9:25
see if you can listen what the base player's doing
  • 9:25 - 9:28
and see if you can hear,
is he playing a 4th or 5th of the root note.
  • 9:28 - 9:31
Or, you know, when there's a lead guitar solo
if he plays a couple of notes,
  • 9:31 - 9:33
can you kind of figure out
    what he's doing there?
  • 9:33 - 9:34
    You know, it's a good...
  • 9:35 - 9:36
really, really good skill this one.
  • 9:37 - 9:43
    So... have fun with that
and I'll see you for stage 5 real soon.
  • 9:43 - 9:44
    Bye bye!
