Interval Ear Training: Aural Training Stage 4 of 5 (Guitar Lesson AU-104) How to play
-
0:10 - 0:11Hey, how are you doing?
-
0:11 - 0:12Justin here.
-
0:12 - 0:15Welcome to aural training, stage 4.
-
0:15 - 0:18In this lesson today
we're going to be checking out another two intervals. -
0:19 - 0:23This time it's going to be the minor 2nd
and the minor 3rd interval. -
0:24 - 0:26Both of these intervals are fairly easy to recognise,
-
0:27 - 0:29because they're quite distinctive.
-
0:30 - 0:32The minor 2nd interval is one fret,
-
0:32 - 0:34moving up one fret.
-
0:34 - 0:35Sounds like this:
-
0:35 - 0:37. . .
-
0:37 - 0:39It's a bit like Jaws.
-
0:39 - 0:48...
-
0:48 - 0:51Little plastic fish jumps out of water,
that kind of thing (plays). -
0:52 - 0:54That is a minor 2nd (plays).
-
0:55 - 0:56Same as a semitone (plays).
-
0:58 - 0:59Moving up one fret.
-
0:59 - 0:59Very, very simple.
-
1:00 - 1:00Minor second.
-
1:01 - 1:03The other interval we're checking out is...
-
1:03 - 1:04a minor third.
-
1:04 - 1:09. . .
-
1:09 - 1:11Few ways of playing this one (plays).
-
1:11 - 1:15There's a few songs that have the minor 3rd interval
at the start of the melody. -
1:15 - 1:19Probably the most commonly known one
is Greensleeves. -
1:19 - 1:23. . .
-
1:23 - 1:24That interval:
-
1:24 - 1:30. . .
-
1:30 - 1:34OK, let's have a look at a close-up
of how to play these intervals. -
1:35 - 1:37OK, start off with the minor 2nd.
-
1:37 - 1:39This is a really difficult one (plays).
-
1:39 - 1:41There's your root note (plays).
-
1:41 - 1:42That's it.
It's up one fret. -
1:43 - 1:45. . .
-
1:45 - 1:47It's really hard one,
to spot that one. -
1:47 - 1:48...
-
1:49 - 1:50OK, that's a minor second.
-
1:50 - 1:51. . .
-
1:51 - 1:52That's the name of the interval.
-
1:52 - 1:53One semitone.
-
1:53 - 1:54...
-
1:54 - 1:55Very simple.
-
1:55 - 1:57Other one is a minor third.
-
1:57 - 1:58There's two common ways of playing this.
-
1:59 - 2:00First of all (plays),
-
2:00 - 2:03is to use (plays) one to fourth finger.
-
2:04 - 2:04Of course you're going to go:
-
2:05 - 2:06...
-
2:06 - 2:09So there's a two-fret gap there
with the other two fingers you've got (plays). -
2:10 - 2:12Like the beginning of the minor pentatonic scale too.
-
2:12 - 2:16. . .
-
2:16 - 2:19That's a minor 3rd interval: (plays).
-
2:19 - 2:20You can also play it like this:
-
2:20 - 2:21. . .
-
2:22 - 2:25If you want, you can move to the next string,
back two frets. -
2:25 - 2:31. . .
-
2:31 - 2:33Up to you which way you want to play.
-
2:33 - 2:33Same thing.
-
2:33 - 2:36...
-
2:37 - 2:38OK, as I mentioned before,
-
2:38 - 2:41I think both of these intervals
have kind of got quite a distinct personality -
2:41 - 2:43and are fairly easy to spot.
-
2:43 - 2:46So, we're going to start off with test Four A.
-
2:46 - 2:49It's just going to be minor 2nd and minor 3rd.
-
2:49 - 2:51Just to get your ear tuned in to those different intervals.
-
2:51 - 2:53Shouldn't be too difficult this one.
-
2:53 - 2:55And then in the next test, the Four B,
-
2:55 - 2:58we're going to include
all of the intervals that we've done previous, -
2:58 - 3:00so that one's going to be
a little bit more challenging. -
3:00 - 3:02Let's talk about that in a sec.
-
3:02 - 3:05Let's go for Four A, here we go.
-
3:05 - 3:06Question 1:
-
3:07 - 3:14. . .
-
3:16 - 3:17Question 2:
-
3:17 - 3:26. . .
-
3:26 - 3:27Here is question 3:
-
3:28 - 3:36. . .
-
3:37 - 3:38Question 4:
-
3:39 - 3:46. . .
-
3:47 - 3:48Question 5:
-
3:49 - 3:56. . .
-
3:57 - 3:58Question 6:
-
3:59 - 4:06. . .
-
4:07 - 4:08Question 7:
-
4:09 - 4:19. . .
-
4:19 - 4:21Question 8:
-
4:21 - 4:29. . .
-
4:30 - 4:32Question 9:
-
4:32 - 4:41. . .
-
4:42 - 4:43And question 10:
-
4:44 - 4:51. . .
-
4:53 - 4:55Ok, off to the website,
check your answers. -
4:55 - 4:58If there are any that you got wrong,
go and focus on those, -
4:58 - 5:00play them through a few more times,
-
5:00 - 5:01try singing along if you can.
-
5:02 - 5:05Remember too that closing your eyes is really helpful,
-
5:05 - 5:07that it turns your ears on a little bit more.
-
5:07 - 5:10All that extra brain power that was going onto your eyes
is now going into your ears. -
5:10 - 5:12So a lot of times you see people playing guitar
-
5:12 - 5:14and not looking,
with their eyes closed. -
5:14 - 5:15It's because you can kind of...
-
5:15 - 5:18you can absorb more through your ears
with your eyes closed, so... -
5:19 - 5:21And plus I feel a little bit stupid here
with you looking at me doing this stuff -
5:22 - 5:23while I'm sitting and kind of playing
and looking around the room. -
5:23 - 5:26So, it's probably better
if you're not looking at me too, you know. -
5:26 - 5:28You should be concentrating on the interval stuff.
-
5:29 - 5:30Ok, here we go, Four B.
-
5:30 - 5:33We're now looking at,
we've got choices between: -
5:33 - 5:35minor 2nd which was Jaws,
-
5:35 - 5:37major 2nd which was 'Happy Birthday,'
-
5:37 - 5:41minor 3rd which is 'Greensleeves' or whatever,
-
5:42 - 5:44major 3rd which was...
-
5:46 - 5:47'Oh When The Saints Go Marching In,'
-
5:48 - 5:51perfect 4th which was The Wedding Song
or 'Auld Lang Syne,' -
5:51 - 5:54a 5th which was, now I'm struggling,
Superman *[should be Star Wars]*, -
5:54 - 5:56a major 6th which was 'My Way'
-
5:56 - 5:57and a major 7th.
-
5:57 - 5:58So you've got...
-
5:58 - 6:01there's a whole lot of different intervals now
that you got to choose from. -
6:01 - 6:03This is kind of hard work, guys.
-
6:03 - 6:05So, you know... good luck!
-
6:06 - 6:09Here we go, question 1 of Four B:
-
6:09 - 6:21. . .
-
6:21 - 6:22Question 2:
-
6:23 - 6:32. . .
-
6:32 - 6:33Question 3:
-
6:34 - 6:45. . .
-
6:45 - 6:46Question 4:
-
6:46 - 6:56. . .
-
6:56 - 6:57Question 5:
-
6:58 - 7:07. . .
-
7:07 - 7:09Question 6:
-
7:09 - 7:18. . .
-
7:19 - 7:20Question 7:
-
7:20 - 7:30. . .
-
7:30 - 7:31Question 8:
-
7:32 - 7:42. . .
-
7:42 - 7:44Question 9:
-
7:44 - 7:53. . .
-
7:53 - 7:55And question 10:
-
7:55 - 8:07. . .
-
8:08 - 8:10Hope that went OK for you,
go and check your answers. -
8:11 - 8:14Remember to practice the ones
that you're struggling with. -
8:14 - 8:18Remember that you can also set
on the Justinguitar Ear Trainer on the website, -
8:19 - 8:21you can select certain intervals.
-
8:21 - 8:24If you really need to drill just a few
that you're getting wrong all the time, -
8:25 - 8:28you can go to the custom option
where you can, you know, -
8:28 - 8:30you just tick off the intervals
that you're struggling with -
8:30 - 8:33and it will just test you
on those over and over again, -
8:33 - 8:34that's called Training Mode.
-
8:34 - 8:38And that's something really useful for you,
to use the Justinguitar Ear Trainer. -
8:38 - 8:42You know, lots of practice!
This is only a practice thing. -
8:42 - 8:44The more that you do it,
the better you'll get at it. -
8:44 - 8:46The things that help are the singing along with it,
-
8:46 - 8:48really listening to it and doing it.
-
8:48 - 8:50Either doing the Justinguitar Ear Trainer,
-
8:50 - 8:52doing with me like this,
-
8:52 - 8:55recording yourself playing different intervals
-
8:55 - 8:56and, you know, testing yourself
-
8:56 - 8:58and/or getting your jam buddy to test you.
-
8:58 - 9:01They are the ways that will sort out your ear.
-
9:01 - 9:04I'm sure that you'll find,
by time you get to this, -
9:04 - 9:05and you've done the end of this little series
-
9:05 - 9:08and you've got your ear trained up a bit,
-
9:08 - 9:09you're going to find transcribing a whole lot easier,
-
9:09 - 9:11you'll start to listen.
-
9:11 - 9:16I might even be so bold as to say that
you might start listening to music in a different way. -
9:16 - 9:19You'll start to hear
different levels within a music, you know. -
9:19 - 9:22Start listening to, you know,
every time you listen to music now -
9:22 - 9:25see if you can listen what the base player's doing
-
9:25 - 9:28and see if you can hear,
is he playing a 4th or 5th of the root note. -
9:28 - 9:31Or, you know, when there's a lead guitar solo
if he plays a couple of notes, -
9:31 - 9:33can you kind of figure out
what he's doing there? -
9:33 - 9:34You know, it's a good...
-
9:35 - 9:36really, really good skill this one.
-
9:37 - 9:43So... have fun with that
and I'll see you for stage 5 real soon. -
9:43 - 9:44Bye bye!
