    - [Tyler] Now what are
    the key macro ideas?

    We're still on like two words,
    so the biggie here,
  • 0:11 - 0:13
    "prosperity matters."
  • 0:13 - 0:17
    Sounds trivial, but a lot
    of people actually deny it,
  • 0:17 - 0:20
    though I'm not sure
    they really mean what they're saying.
  • 0:21 - 0:22
    They'll say something like,
  • 0:22 - 0:26
    "Oh, you know, life was much better
    back in 1910," or back wherever.
  • 0:27 - 0:30
    But I think there's a lot
    of evidence from economics.
  • 0:30 - 0:33
    It can't tell you ethically
    that a wealthier country
  • 0:33 - 0:35
    is better than a poorer country,
  • 0:35 - 0:38
    but it can tell you that most
    of the things people want,
  • 0:38 - 0:42
    they get more of it
    in wealthier countries.
  • 0:42 - 0:45
    And I don't just mean money --
    if you look at health,
  • 0:45 - 0:49
    infant mortality, the ability
    to choose a career you want,
  • 0:49 - 0:54
    women's rights, minority rights,
    political liberty, democracy,
  • 0:54 - 0:57
    civil liberties...
    air conditioning! Right?
  • 0:57 - 0:58
    You can't live
    without air conditioning.
  • 0:58 - 1:01
    These are all correlated
    with prosperity.
  • 1:01 - 1:04
    And I know correlated
    doesn't mean cause.
  • 1:04 - 1:07
    The causation runs both ways,
    and it runs through third
  • 1:07 - 1:09
    and other variables.
  • 1:09 - 1:14
    But the simple point
    that prosperity is very important.
  • 1:14 - 1:15
    There's a lot we want to do.
  • 1:15 - 1:17
    You have to actually pay the bills.
  • 1:17 - 1:19
    There is a budget constraint,
  • 1:19 - 1:21
    and the way you meet
    that budget constraint
  • 1:21 - 1:23
    is to be a wealthy nation.
  • 1:23 - 1:27
    People will have different goals
    in politics and with their lives,
  • 1:27 - 1:29
    but basically the wealthier nations
  • 1:29 - 1:33
    do a better job
    of meeting those goals.
  • 1:33 - 1:35
    And you can look
    at other economic evidence.
  • 1:35 - 1:38
    Again, this is not
    a final ethical judgement,
  • 1:38 - 1:42
    but the simple question
    if people, say, are leaving Syria
  • 1:42 - 1:45
    because life in Syria has
    become too difficult --
  • 1:45 - 1:48
    where is it ideally they want
    to go when they have the choice?
  • 1:48 - 1:52
    For the most part, they prefer
    to go to wealthier nations.
  • 1:52 - 1:56
    So in Europe,
    the attraction was Germany,
  • 1:56 - 1:58
    one of the wealthier nations.
  • 1:58 - 2:01
    For migrants in general --
    Canada, Australia, United States,
  • 2:01 - 2:06
    United Kingdom, Switzerland --
    wealthy, relatively free countries,
  • 2:06 - 2:08
    of course, are where
    people want to be.
