    a really big imagination.

    That's most of you.

    I have some news for us creatives.
  • Not Synced
    Over the course of the next 20 years,
  • Not Synced
    more will change around the way
    we do our work
  • Not Synced
    than has happened in the last 2,000.
  • Not Synced
    In fact, I think we're at the dawn
    of a new age in human history.
  • Not Synced
    Now, there have been four major historical
    eras defined by the way we work.
  • Not Synced
    The hunter-gatherer age lasted
    several million years.
  • Not Synced
    And then the Agricultural Age
    lasted several thousand years.
  • Not Synced
    The Industrial Age lasted
    a couple of centuries,
  • Not Synced
    and now the Information Age
    has lasted just a few decades.
  • Not Synced
    And now today,
  • Not Synced
    we're on the cusp of our next
    great era as a species.
  • Not Synced
    Welcome to the Augemented Age.
  • Not Synced
    In this new era,
  • Not Synced
    your natural human capabilities are going
    to be augmented by computational systems
  • Not Synced
    that help you think,
  • Not Synced
    robotic systems that help you make,
  • Not Synced
    and a digital nervous system
  • Not Synced
    that connects you to the world
    fay beyond your natural senses.
  • Not Synced
    Let's stated with Cognitive Augmentation.
  • Not Synced
    How many of you are augmented cyborgs?
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    I would actually argue that we're
    already augmented.
  • Not Synced
    Imagine you're at a party,
  • Not Synced
    and somebody asks you a question
    that you don't know the answer to.
  • Not Synced
    If you have one of these,
  • Not Synced
    in a few seconds,
  • Not Synced
    you can know the answer.
  • Not Synced
    But this is just a primitive beginning.
  • Not Synced
    Even Siri is just a passive tool.
  • Not Synced
    In fact, for the past
    three-and-a-half million years,
  • Not Synced
    the tools that we've had
    have been completely passive.
  • Not Synced
    They do exactly what we tell them
    and nothing more.
  • Not Synced
    Our very first tool only cut
    where we struck it.
  • Not Synced
    The chisel only carves where
    the artist points it.
  • Not Synced
    And even our most advanced tools
    do nothing without out explicit direction.
  • Not Synced
    In fact, to date --
  • Not Synced
    this is something that frustrates me --
  • Not Synced
    we've always been limited
  • Not Synced
    by this need to manually
    push our wills into our tools,
  • Not Synced
    like manual --
  • Not Synced
    like literally using our hands,
  • Not Synced
    even with computers.
  • Not Synced
    But I'm more like Scotty in "Star Trek."
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    I want to have a conversation
    with a computer.
  • Not Synced
    I want to say, "Computer,
    let's design a car,"
  • Not Synced
    and the computer shows me a car.
  • Not Synced
    And I say, "No, more fast-looking,
    and less German,"
  • Not Synced
    and bang, the computer shows me an option.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    That conversation might be
    a little ways off,
  • Not Synced
    it's actually probably less
    than any of us think,
  • Not Synced
    but right now,
  • Not Synced
    we're working on it.
  • Not Synced
    Tools are making this leap from being
    passive to being generative.
  • Not Synced
    Generative design tools
    use a computer and algorithms
  • Not Synced
    to synthesize geometry --
  • Not Synced
    to come up with new designs
    all by themselves.
  • Not Synced
    All it needs are your goals
    and your constraints.
  • Not Synced
    I'll give you an example.
  • Not Synced
    In the case of this Aerial
    Drone [Chassy?],
  • Not Synced
    all you would need to do is tell it
    something like,
  • Not Synced
    it has four propellers,
  • Not Synced
    you want it to be
    as lightweight as possible,
  • Not Synced
    and you need it to be
    aerodynamically efficient.
  • Not Synced
    And then what the computer does
  • Not Synced
    is it explores the entire solution space:
  • Not Synced
    every single possibility that solves
    and meets your criteria --
  • Not Synced
    millions of them.
  • Not Synced
    It takes big computers to do this,
  • Not Synced
    but it comes back to us with designs
  • Not Synced
    that we by ourselves
    never could've imagined.
  • Not Synced
    And the computer's coming up
    with this stuff all by itself,
  • Not Synced
    no one ever drew anything,
  • Not Synced
    and it started completely from scratch.
  • Not Synced
    And by the way,
  • Not Synced
    it's no accident
  • Not Synced
    that the drone body looks just like
    the pelvis of a flying squirrel.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    It's because the algorithms are designed
    to word the same way that evolution does.
  • Not Synced
    What's exciting is we're starting to see
    this technology out in the real world.
  • Not Synced
    We've been working with [Airbus]
    for a couple of years
  • Not Synced
    on this concept plane for the future.
  • Not Synced
    It's aways out still,
  • Not Synced
    but just recently we used
    a generative design AI
  • Not Synced
    to come up with this.
  • Not Synced
    This is a 3D printed cabin partition
    that's been designed by a computer.
  • Not Synced
    It's stronger than the original
    yet half the weight,
  • Not Synced
    and it will be flying
    in the Airbus [A-320] later this year.
  • Not Synced
    So computers can now generate.
  • Not Synced
    They can come up with their own solutions
    to our well-defined problems.
  • Not Synced
    But they're not inutitive.
  • Not Synced
    They still have to start from scratch
    every single time,
  • Not Synced
    and that's because they never learn,
  • Not Synced
    unlike Maggie.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    Maggie's actually smarter than our
    most advanced design tools.
  • Not Synced
    What do I mean by that?
  • Not Synced
    If her owner picks up that leash,
  • Not Synced
    Maggie knows with a fair
    degree of certainty
  • Not Synced
    that it's time to for a walk.
  • Not Synced
    And how did she learn?
  • Not Synced
    Well, every time the owner
    picked up the leash,
  • Not Synced
    they went for a walk.
  • Not Synced
    And Maggie did three things:
  • Not Synced
    she had to pay attention,
  • Not Synced
    she had to remember what happened
  • Not Synced
    and she had to retain and create
    a pattern in her mind.
  • Not Synced
    Interestingly,
  • Not Synced
    that's exactly computer scientists
    have been trying to get AIs to do
  • Not Synced
    for the last 60 or so years.
  • Not Synced
    Back in 1952,
  • Not Synced
    they build this computer
    that could play Tic-Tac-Toe.
  • Not Synced
    Big deal.
  • Not Synced
    Then 45 years later,
  • Not Synced
    1997,
  • Not Synced
    Deep Blue beats [Casperoff] at Chess.
  • Not Synced
    2011, Watson beats these two
    humans at Jeopardy,
  • Not Synced
    which is much harder for a computer
    to play than Chess is.
  • Not Synced
    In fact, rather than working
    from predefined recipes,
  • Not Synced
    Watson had to use reasoning
    to overcome his human opponents.
  • Not Synced
    And then a couple of weeks ago,
  • Not Synced
    [Deep Minds' Alpha-Go] beats
    the world's best human at Go,
  • Not Synced
    which is the most difficult
    game that we have.
  • Not Synced
    In fact in Go,
  • Not Synced
    there are more possible moves
    than there are atoms in the universe.
  • Not Synced
    So in order to win,
  • Not Synced
    what Alpha-Go had to do
    was develop intuition,
  • Not Synced
    and in fact,
  • Not Synced
    at some points,
  • Not Synced
    Alpha-Go's programmers didn't understand
    why Alpha-Go was doing what it was doing.
  • Not Synced
    And things are moving really fast.
  • Not Synced
    I mean, consider --
  • Not Synced
    in the space of a human lifetime,
  • Not Synced
    computers have gone from a child's game
  • Not Synced
    to what's recognized as the pinnacle
    of strategic thought.
  • Not Synced
    What's basically happening
  • Not Synced
    is computers are going
    from being like Spock
  • Not Synced
    to being a lot more like Kirk.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    Right?
  • Not Synced
    From pure logic to intuition.
  • Not Synced
    Would you cross this bridge?
  • Not Synced
    Most of you are saying,
  • Not Synced
    "Oh, hell no."
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    And you arrived at that decision
    in a split second.
  • Not Synced
    You just sort of knew
    that that bridge was unsafe.
  • Not Synced
    And that's exactly the kind of intuition
  • Not Synced
    that our deep learning systems
    are starting to develop right now.
  • Not Synced
    Very soon you'll literally be able
    to show something that you've made,
  • Not Synced
    you've designed,
  • Not Synced
    to computer,
  • Not Synced
    and it will look at it and say,
  • Not Synced
    "Mm, sorry homey, that will never work,
  • Not Synced
    you'll have to try again."
  • Not Synced
    Or you could ask it if people
    are going to like your next song,
  • Not Synced
    or your next flavor of ice cream.
  • Not Synced
    Or, much more importantly,
  • Not Synced
    you could work with a computer to solve
    a problem that we've never faced before.
  • Not Synced
    For instance climate change.
  • Not Synced
    We're not doing a very
    good job on our own,
  • Not Synced
    we could certainly use
    all the help we can get.
  • Not Synced
    That's what I'm talking about:
  • Not Synced
    technology amplifying
    our cognitive abilities
  • Not Synced
    so we can imagine and design things
  • Not Synced
    that were simply out of our reach
    as plain old unaugmented humans.
  • Not Synced
    So, what about making
    all of this crazy new stuff
  • Not Synced
    that we're going to invent and design?
  • Not Synced
    I think the era of human augmentation
    is as much about the physical world
  • Not Synced
    as it is about the virtual,
    intellectual realm.
  • Not Synced
    So how will technology augment us?
  • Not Synced
    In the physcial world,
  • Not Synced
    robotic systems.
  • Not Synced
    OK, there's certainly a fear that robots
    are going to take jobs from humans,
  • Not Synced
    and that is true in certain sectors.
  • Not Synced
    But I'm much more interested in this idea
  • Not Synced
    that humans and robots working together
    are going to augment each other,
  • Not Synced
    and start to inhabit a new space.
  • Not Synced
    This is our applied
    research lab in San Francisco,
  • Not Synced
    where one of our areas of focus
    is advanced robotics,
  • Not Synced
    specifically human-robot collaboration.
  • Not Synced
    And this is Bishop,
  • Not Synced
    one of our robots.
  • Not Synced
    As an experiment,
  • Not Synced
    we set it up to help a person working
    in construction doing repetitive tasks.
  • Not Synced
    Tasks like cutting out holes for outlets
    or light switches in dry wall.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    So Bishop's human partner can tell
    what to do in plain English
  • Not Synced
    and simple gestures,
  • Not Synced
    kind of like talking to a dog.
  • Not Synced
    And then Bishop executes
    on those instructions
  • Not Synced
    with perfect precision.
  • Not Synced
    We're using the human for what
    the human is good at,
  • Not Synced
    right?
  • Not Synced
    Awareness, perception and desicion making.
  • Not Synced
    And we're using the robot
    for what it's good at:
  • Not Synced
    precision and repetitiveness.
  • Not Synced
    Here's another cool project
    that Bishop worked on.
  • Not Synced
    The goal of this project,
  • Not Synced
    which we called, "The Hive,"
  • Not Synced
    was the prototype the experience
    of humans, computers and robots
  • Not Synced
    all working together to solve
    a highly complex design problem.
  • Not Synced
    The humans acted as labor.
  • Not Synced
    They cruised around the construction site,
  • Not Synced
    they manipulated the bamboo --
  • Not Synced
    which by the way,
  • Not Synced
    because it's a non-icomorphic material,
  • Not Synced
    is super hard for robots to deal with.
  • Not Synced
    But then the robots
    did this fiber winding,
  • Not Synced
    which was almost impossible
    for a human to do.
  • Not Synced
    And then we had an AI
    that was controlling everything.
  • Not Synced
    It was telling the humans what to do,
  • Not Synced
    it was tell the robots what to do,
  • Not Synced
    and keeping track of thousands
    of individual components.
  • Not Synced
    What's interesting is building
    this pavillion was simply not possible
  • Not Synced
    without human, robot and AI
    augmenting each other.
  • Not Synced
    OK, I'll share one more project.
  • Not Synced
    This one's a little bit crazy.
  • Not Synced
    We're working with Amsterdam-based artist,
    [Youris Marvin and his team at MX3D]
  • Not Synced
    to generatively design
    and robotically print
  • Not Synced
    the world's first autonomously
    manufactured bridge.
  • Not Synced
    So, Youris and an AI are designing
    this thing right now, as we speak,
  • Not Synced
    in Amsterdam.
  • Not Synced
    And when we're done,
  • Not Synced
    we're going to hit Go,
  • Not Synced
    and robots will start 3D printing
    in stainless steel,
  • Not Synced
    and then they're going to keep printing
    without human intervention
  • Not Synced
    until the bridge is finished.
  • Not Synced
    So as computers are going
    to augment our ability
  • Not Synced
    to imagine and design new stuff,
  • Not Synced
    robotic systems are going to help us
  • Not Synced
    build and make things that we've
    never been able to make before.
  • Not Synced
    But what about our ability
    to sense and control these things?
  • Not Synced
    What about a nervous system
    for the things that we make?
  • Not Synced
    Our nervous system --
  • Not Synced
    the human nervous system --
  • Not Synced
    tells everything that's
    going on around us.
  • Not Synced
    But the nervous system of the things
    we make is rudimentary at best.
  • Not Synced
    For instance,
  • Not Synced
    a car doesn't tell the city's
    Public Works department
  • Not Synced
    that it just hit a pothole at the corner
    of Broadway and Morrison;
  • Not Synced
    A building doesn't tell its designers
  • Not Synced
    whether or not the people
    inside like being there,
  • Not Synced
    and the toy manufacturer doesn't know
    if a toy is actually being played with --
  • Not Synced
    how and where and whether
    or not it's any fun.
  • Not Synced
    Look, I'm sure that the designers
    imagined this lifestyle for Barbie
  • Not Synced
    when they designed her --
  • Not Synced
    right?
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    But what if it turns out that Barbie's
    actually really lonely?
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    If the designers had known what was
    really happening in the real world
  • Not Synced
    with their designs --
  • Not Synced
    the road, the building, the Barbie --
  • Not Synced
    they could've used that knowledge
  • Not Synced
    to create an experience
    that was better for the user.
  • Not Synced
    What's missing is a nervous system
  • Not Synced
    connecting us to all of the things
    that we design, make and use.
  • Not Synced
    What if all of you had that kind
    of information flowing to you
  • Not Synced
    from the things you create
    in the real world?
  • Not Synced
    With all of the stuff we make,
  • Not Synced
    we spend a tremendous amount
    of money and energy --
  • Not Synced
    in fact last year about
    two trillion dollars --
  • Not Synced
    convincing people to buy
    the things that we've made.
  • Not Synced
    But if you had this connection
    to the things that you design and create,
  • Not Synced
    after they're out in the real world,
  • Not Synced
    after they've been sold,
    or launched or whatever,
  • Not Synced
    we could actually change that,
  • Not Synced
    and go from making people want our stuff,
  • Not Synced
    to just making stuff that people want
    in the first place.
  • Not Synced
    The good news is we're working
    on digital nervous systems
  • Not Synced
    that connect us to the things we design.
  • Not Synced
    We're working on one project
    with a couple of guys down in Los Angeles
  • Not Synced
    called the Bandito Brothers,
  • Not Synced
    and their team,
  • Not Synced
    and one of the things these guys do
    is build insane cars
  • Not Synced
    that do absolutely insane things.
  • Not Synced
    These guys are crazy.
  • Not Synced
    (Laughter)
  • Not Synced
    In the best way.
  • Not Synced
    And what we're doing with them
  • Not Synced
    is taking a traditions racecar [Chassy],
  • Not Synced
    and giving it a nervous system.
  • Not Synced
    So we instrumented it
    with dozens of censors,
  • Not Synced
    and then we put a world-class driver
    behind the wheel,
  • Not Synced
    took it out to the desert
  • Not Synced
    and drove the hell out of it for a week.
  • Not Synced
    And the car's nervous system captured
    everything that was happening to car.
  • Not Synced
    We captured four billion data points.
  • Not Synced
    All of the forces
    that it was subjected to.
  • Not Synced
    And then we did something crazy.
  • Not Synced
    We took all of that data,
  • Not Synced
    and plugged it into a generative
    design AI that we call, "Dreamcatcher."
  • Not Synced
    So what do get when you give
    a design tool a nervous system,
  • Not Synced
    and you ask it to build you
    the ultimate car [chassy]?
  • Not Synced
    You get this.
  • Not Synced
    This is something that human
    could never have designed.
  • Not Synced
    Except a human did design this,
  • Not Synced
    but it was a human that was augmented
    by a generative design AI,
  • Not Synced
    a digital nervous system,
  • Not Synced
    and robots that can actually
    fabricate something like this.
