    and boy, does that lineage show.

    Like that game, this one revolves around a
  13. Not Synced
    flashy gimmick that serves to differentiate
  14. Not Synced
    its gameplay a bit from that of other, more
  15. Not Synced
    straightforward third-person shooters.
  16. Not Synced
    And like Max Payne, as well as Remedy’s
  17. Not Synced
    2010 game Alan Wake, it stars a dude
  18. Not Synced
    who cannot stop narrating his story for us.
  19. Not Synced
    Sadly, Quantum Break’s story is just a mess.

    Because of reasons, time is fractured,
  21. Not Synced
    stuttering with increasing frequency and
  22. Not Synced
    possibly approaching a point at which
  23. Not Synced
    it just breaks down completely.
  24. Not Synced
    Different men have different ideas
  25. Not Synced
    about how to deal with this problem,
  26. Not Synced
    and they fight with each other while
  27. Not Synced
    uttering standard lines of dialogue like
  28. Not Synced
    “It doesn’t have to end like this.”
  29. Not Synced
    There are very few clear rules established
  30. Not Synced
    in Quantum Break about how time works.
  31. Not Synced
    It just behaves in whatever way it needs
  32. Not Synced
    to behave to throw the characters into
  33. Not Synced
    another complication or to give the
  34. Not Synced
    main character new powers.
  35. Not Synced
    Things just happen because they’re
  36. Not Synced
    convenient for the story, so there’s
  37. Not Synced
    nothing clearly at stake.
  38. Not Synced
    You might argue that the quality of
  39. Not Synced
    the story in a game like this isn’t all
  40. Not Synced
    that important, but the thing is that
  41. Not Synced
    Quantum Break really wants you to
  42. Not Synced
    care about its story.
  43. Not Synced
    You see, Quantum Break is one part game,
  44. Not Synced
    one part live action TV show,
  45. Not Synced
    and a good chunk of your time is spent
  46. Not Synced
    watching the four live-action episodes
  47. Not Synced
    that play out over the course of the game.
  48. Not Synced
    And they’re just such generically bad TV,
  49. Not Synced
    filled with cliché dialogue and cookie
  50. Not Synced
    cutter characters, right down to the comic
  51. Not Synced
    relief tech geek hacker type that seems
  52. Not Synced
    to be a necessity these days in every
  53. Not Synced
    mediocre crime drama.
  54. Not Synced
    There are a few fine actors here, including
  55. Not Synced
    Lance Reddick, who proves he can bring
  56. Not Synced
    gravitas to even the goofiest material.
  57. Not Synced
    But the most that decent acting can do
  58. Not Synced
    here is serve as a smokescreen to distract
  59. Not Synced
    us from just how bad the story actually is.

    Quantum Break is, at its core, a tale of
  61. Not Synced
    three men. You play as Jack Joyce, a man
  62. Not Synced
    who comes away from a time travel mishap
  63. Not Synced
    with the ability to manipulate time in specific ways.
  64. Not Synced
    It’s sort of like last year’s adventure game
  65. Not Synced
    Life Is Strange, only instead of using its
  66. Not Synced
    concept to explore relationships and
  67. Not Synced
    serious, real-life issues like bullying and
  68. Not Synced
    suicide, Quantum Break just uses it as a
  69. Not Synced
    source for spectacle.

    Jack’s brother Will is an eccentric genius,
  71. Not Synced
    and the villain, Paul Serene, is a powerful
  72. Not Synced
    CEO of a massive corporation named Monarch.
  73. Not Synced
    Both Will and Paul’s characters are just
  74. Not Synced
    recycled archetypes without any new flavoring.
  75. Not Synced
    Quantum Break doesn’t even try to break
  76. Not Synced
    from traditional male-dominated convention here.

    The TV show portion of this game also
  78. Not Synced
    spends a lot of time on a supporting character
  79. Not Synced
    named Liam Burke. Burke gets into weird
  80. Not Synced
    escalator kick fights!
  81. Not Synced
    Burke unleashes manly screams while
  82. Not Synced
    strangling someone to death in a hospital
  83. Not Synced
    as a bunch of people just stand around and watch!
  84. Not Synced
    Burke has a pregnant wife who he would
  85. Not Synced
    do anything—ANYTHING—to protect.
  86. Not Synced
    Games and other mainstream media often
  87. Not Synced
    reinforce the false notion of women as fragile
  88. Not Synced
    and men as protectors whose role and
  89. Not Synced
    responsibility requires them to do anything
  90. Not Synced
    to either protect or avenge their families
  91. Not Synced
    —Max Payne was definitely in this mold, too—
  92. Not Synced
    but Burke is a particularly bland and
  93. Not Synced
    formulaic take on this character type,
  94. Not Synced
    and that’s really saying something.

    In Quantum Break, men are the prime actors
  96. Not Synced
    and doers. Men are the ones with vision and
  97. Not Synced
    ambition, who set things in motion and who
  98. Not Synced
    then do whatever they can to make things
  99. Not Synced
    go their way. The only female character
  100. Not Synced
    who gets any real development is Beth Wilder,
  101. Not Synced
    who helps Jack for reasons that aren’t
  102. Not Synced
    immediately clear. In one of the game’s
  103. Not Synced
    only moments that even come close to generating
  104. Not Synced
    actual interest in its characters, we do
  105. Not Synced
    eventually get to know Beth’s history and
  106. Not Synced
    her motivations. Her main purpose here,
  107. Not Synced
    though, is to serve as a love interest for
  108. Not Synced
    Jack, and she’s ultimately more important
  109. Not Synced
    for the emotional impact she has on him
  110. Not Synced
    than she is as an individual in her own right.
  111. Not Synced
    It’s also worth noting that like most of
  112. Not Synced
    the enemies, Beth works security for the
  113. Not Synced
    Monarch corporation. She must be the only
  114. Not Synced
    woman on a team otherwise made up of
  115. Not Synced
    hundreds of men, because there are no
  116. Not Synced
    female combatants in the game.
  117. Not Synced
    As for the combat, there’s a certain novelty
  118. Not Synced
    for a little while to the spectacle of
  119. Not Synced
    Quantum Break’s action.
  120. Not Synced
    Seeing environments shatter in slow motion
  121. Not Synced
    and seeing people get stuck in time looks pretty cool.
  122. Not Synced
    But that’s all it does. Quantum Break’s
  123. Not Synced
    structure feels overly familiar and predictable,
  124. Not Synced
    from the heavy enemies it introduces with
  125. Not Synced
    the weak points on their backs to the
  126. Not Synced
    checkpoints near the end in which it throws
  127. Not Synced
    so many enemies at you that you just
  128. Not Synced
    want it all to be over.

    It’s unfortunate that Quantum Break’s
  130. Not Synced
    ambition to tell video game stories in a
  131. Not Synced
    new way is wasted on a story that doesn’t
  132. Not Synced
    do anything new.

    The game doesn’t seem to care if it makes
  134. Not Synced
    any sense or if its story actually tries to say anything.
  135. Not Synced
    All it cares about is being “awesome” in
  136. Not Synced
    the most insubstantial way possible,
  137. Not Synced
    in the sense that it’s “awesome” to watch
  138. Not Synced
    a locomotive crash again and again and again.
  139. Not Synced
    There’s nothing underneath. Maybe, maybe
  140. Not Synced
    in 2001 when Max Payne came out, a flashy
  141. Not Synced
    gimmick was enough to make the mere act
  142. Not Synced
    of filling hundreds of dudes with bullets
  143. Not Synced
    more than a hollow exercise. But not now.

    We’re not actually stuck in time. But playing
  145. Not Synced
    Quantum Break, it sure feels like we are.
