Christ's Star - Tim Conway

  • 0:01 - 0:04
    ...to Matthew chapter 2
    and Luke chapter 2.
  • 0:04 - 0:08
And you can go to both those places.
  • 0:08 - 0:14
You can stick your finger in Luke 2,
  • 0:14 - 0:16
and open your Bibles to Matthew 2.
  • 0:16 - 0:18
And we're going to go back and forth
  • 0:18 - 0:21
    between them.
  • 0:21 - 0:23
Today, I do want to speak to you
  • 0:23 - 0:26
    about the birth of Christ
  • 0:26 - 0:30
    and the Magi
  • 0:30 - 0:32
and the star that led the Magi
  • 0:32 - 0:36
    to Bethlehem.
  • 0:36 - 0:47
So, this is our sixteenth Christmas
  • 0:47 - 0:49
    as a church
  • 0:49 - 0:53
    since our church was started.
  • 0:53 - 0:56
    I have never intentionally preached
  • 0:56 - 1:03
    a Christmas sermon.
  • 1:03 - 1:05
If you're visiting our church today,
  • 1:05 - 1:07
you may notice there's no lights.
  • 1:07 - 1:09
    There's no tree.
  • 1:09 - 1:15
We don't even have a manger scene.
  • 1:15 - 1:17
You probably noticed we didn't even
  • 1:17 - 1:19
    sing a Christmas song.
  • 1:19 - 1:23
    I purposely like to sing
    them in the summer.
  • 1:23 - 1:25
    I was half-minded to sing
  • 1:25 - 1:26
    "Hark the Herald Angels Sing"
  • 1:26 - 1:28
just because the words in it,
  • 1:28 - 1:29
    I think are glorious,
  • 1:29 - 1:36
and they do have to do
    with the message today.
  • 1:36 - 1:39
    I don't think it's necessarily wrong
  • 1:39 - 1:41
    for preachers that do preach
  • 1:41 - 1:42
    Christmas sermons.
  • 1:42 - 1:44
    I'm not knocking that.
  • 1:44 - 1:46
    I have just never personally
  • 1:46 - 1:49
felt compelled to preach a sermon
  • 1:49 - 1:53
    based on a man-made holiday.
  • 1:53 - 1:55
And I personally am not going to be
  • 1:55 - 1:59
    driven by those holidays,
  • 1:59 - 2:00
    whether they be Christmas,
  • 2:00 - 2:08
    Easter, Mother's Day, Father's Day...
  • 2:08 - 2:10
    I smile because just thinking
  • 2:10 - 2:11
    about Mother's Day -
  • 2:11 - 2:13
Mack Tomlinson - he told us
  • 2:13 - 2:14
    just a hilarious story
  • 2:14 - 2:16
that when he was a young preacher,
  • 2:16 - 2:17
    he was preaching
  • 2:17 - 2:19
and he was preaching on hell
  • 2:19 - 2:22
and he was really giving it to the people.
  • 2:22 - 2:23
    And he said suddenly,
  • 2:23 - 2:25
about five minutes left in his message,
  • 2:25 - 2:26
    he noticed that the women
  • 2:26 - 2:28
    were dressed really fancy.
  • 2:28 - 2:30
And he said with five minutes left,
  • 2:30 - 2:38
    "Now, a word about mothers..."
  • 2:38 - 2:39
    Our smallest crowds are probably
  • 2:39 - 2:42
    at Christmas and especially Easter
  • 2:42 - 2:44
because we do our Denton conference
  • 2:44 - 2:51
    at Easter.
  • 2:51 - 2:55
    The world's holidays haven't dictated
  • 2:55 - 2:58
to me what I'm going to preach.
  • 2:58 - 3:02
And brethren, we do have to be honest.
  • 3:02 - 3:07
    Christmas and Easter are
  • 3:07 - 3:11
    man-made holidays.
  • 3:11 - 3:13
    That doesn't mean that
  • 3:13 - 3:18
    biblical things might not be
  • 3:18 - 3:22
    spoken about.
  • 3:22 - 3:24
    But they're man-made.
  • 3:24 - 3:27
God has never told us to observe these.
  • 3:27 - 3:29
    In fact, there's really
    only one celebration
  • 3:29 - 3:32
    in Scripture that God
    in an ongoing fashion
  • 3:32 - 3:34
    tells us to observe.
  • 3:34 - 3:36
    What might that be?
  • 3:36 - 3:37
    The Lord's Supper.
  • 3:37 - 3:39
    And not just once yearly.
  • 3:39 - 3:40
As often as you do this,
  • 3:40 - 3:42
do this in remembrance of Me.
  • 3:42 - 3:46
So, that's what we're called to remember.
  • 3:46 - 3:49
That's what we're called to celebrate.
  • 3:49 - 3:50
Now look, I'm not here this morning
  • 3:50 - 3:55
    to bash Christmas.
  • 3:55 - 3:59
    From a pastoral perspective,
  • 3:59 - 4:01
    personally it's been a non-issue.
  • 4:01 - 4:02
I think for our church largely
  • 4:02 - 4:03
    it's been a non-issue.
  • 4:03 - 4:06
    Some of you do things.
Some of you don't do things.
  • 4:06 - 4:07
    Some of you do more.
  • 4:07 - 4:11
    Some of you do less.
  • 4:11 - 4:13
    It's just been a non-issue.
  • 4:13 - 4:14
    I think it's something
  • 4:14 - 4:16
    between you and the Lord.
  • 4:16 - 4:18
If you're going to make any sort
  • 4:18 - 4:21
    of observation you want it
  • 4:21 - 4:23
    in line with Romans 14.
  • 4:23 - 4:25
You want to do it unto the Lord.
  • 4:25 - 4:26
And if you don't do it,
  • 4:26 - 4:28
you don't do it unto the Lord.
  • 4:28 - 4:30
I think it's the same way with preaching.
  • 4:30 - 4:32
If a man wants to preach a message
  • 4:32 - 4:35
    around Christmastime on things
  • 4:35 - 4:37
that have to do with the Incarnation,
  • 4:37 - 4:38
well, if he can do it unto the Lord,
  • 4:38 - 4:40
let him do it unto the Lord.
  • 4:40 - 4:43
If he wants to preach about the cross
  • 4:43 - 4:44
    around Easter time,
  • 4:44 - 4:48
let him do it unto the Lord.
  • 4:48 - 4:50
But I say all that to say this,
  • 4:50 - 4:54
this year, I do feel compelled to preach
  • 4:54 - 4:57
on the birth of Christ at this season.
  • 4:57 - 5:00
    Just recently, here's what happened:
  • 5:00 - 5:05
    Just recently, you know
that a group of us men
  • 5:05 - 5:09
went to prison over in Huntsville.
  • 5:09 - 5:10
    We were in the chapel.
  • 5:10 - 5:12
Let me describe the chapel to you.
  • 5:12 - 5:20
    It's probably somewhat
    the size of this room.
  • 5:20 - 5:23
    Maybe not as long.
  • 5:23 - 5:24
    But it's fairly big.
  • 5:24 - 5:26
    Much higher ceilings.
  • 5:26 - 5:30
    It's a chapel that
    sticks off of the prison.
  • 5:30 - 5:31
    It's like a church building.
  • 5:31 - 5:33
Up front, they had a choir.
  • 5:33 - 5:36
To the right, sitting in the seats
  • 5:36 - 5:37
    over here -
  • 5:37 - 5:39
    behind there was a choir,
  • 5:39 - 5:41
over here there was a band.
  • 5:41 - 5:43
We sat, all 8 of us that went,
  • 5:43 - 5:45
we sat across the front row there.
  • 5:45 - 5:46
    And on either side,
  • 5:46 - 5:48
    they had t.v. monitors.
  • 5:48 - 5:50
And I'm supposing those were wired
  • 5:50 - 5:52
into a computer in the back.
  • 5:52 - 5:55
And so what was happening is
  • 5:55 - 5:56
not only do they have to count
  • 5:56 - 5:57
    the prisoners - this was
  • 5:57 - 5:59
    a maximum security prison;
  • 5:59 - 6:01
and once in awhile cell block numbers
  • 6:01 - 6:02
would come up on those screens,
  • 6:02 - 6:04
    and everybody would stand up
  • 6:04 - 6:06
    in that cell block and
    just immediately exit
  • 6:06 - 6:08
when their cell block came up.
  • 6:08 - 6:10
    But, when you didn't
    have cell block numbers,
  • 6:10 - 6:14
you actually had the words to the songs.
  • 6:14 - 6:16
And because it was around Christmas time
  • 6:16 - 6:18
and many of the songs they were singing
  • 6:18 - 6:20
    were Christmas-related,
  • 6:20 - 6:22
they also, not only had words
  • 6:22 - 6:23
    to the songs,
  • 6:23 - 6:26
    they had pictures.
  • 6:26 - 6:30
    Christmas-esque pictures.
  • 6:30 - 6:33
    And one of them
  • 6:33 - 6:36
was just a picture of the night sky
  • 6:36 - 6:41
    with a bright, shining star.
  • 6:41 - 6:44
    And you know how it
    is in the Christian life?
  • 6:44 - 6:48
You can take certain things for granted.
  • 6:48 - 6:49
    You know they're there.
  • 6:49 - 6:53
    You come across them
    as you read Scripture.
  • 6:53 - 6:54
    You know it's truth.
  • 6:54 - 6:55
    You know it's fact.
  • 6:55 - 6:57
But you know it is sometimes
  • 6:57 - 6:58
when certain truths from the Bible,
  • 6:58 - 7:00
they just lay hold on you?
  • 7:00 - 7:02
They come to you with power.
  • 7:02 - 7:06
I look at that star and I thought,
  • 7:06 - 7:07
    that's real.
  • 7:07 - 7:09
Kevin Woodell was sitting next to me.
  • 7:09 - 7:18
I said, "Kevin, there really was a star."
  • 7:18 - 7:20
It's called "His star" in Scripture.
  • 7:20 - 7:22
That's what the Magi called it:
  • 7:22 - 7:23
    His star.
  • 7:23 - 7:26
    "We have seen His star."
  • 7:26 - 7:29
    It's the Christ's star.
  • 7:29 - 7:33
    I was affected by that.
  • 7:33 - 7:41
So, I decided maybe we'd look at that.
  • 7:41 - 7:46
God put a star in the sky 2,000 years ago.
  • 7:46 - 7:48
A star that had never been seen before.
  • 7:48 - 7:50
    And it wasn't seen after.
  • 7:50 - 7:52
It was just there at that time
  • 7:52 - 8:01
to guide certain men to Christ.
  • 8:01 - 8:03
    That's what I want to
    bring a sermon on today.
  • 8:03 - 8:07
    There really was a star.
  • 8:07 - 8:08
    Let's look at that.
  • 8:08 - 8:11
    Matthew 2.
  • 8:11 - 8:14
    Notice verses 1-2.
  • 8:14 - 8:22
"Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem
  • 8:22 - 8:27
of Judea in the days of Herod the King,
  • 8:27 - 8:30
    behold, wise men..."
  • 8:30 - 8:37
    The word is magoi: Magi.
  • 8:37 - 8:41
"...from the East came to Jerusalem,
  • 8:41 - 8:45
saying, 'where is He Who has been born
  • 8:45 - 8:46
    King of the Jews?
  • 8:46 - 8:51
For we saw (here it is) His star."
  • 8:51 - 8:54
The Messiah has His own star.
  • 8:54 - 8:56
That doesn't mean that He doesn't
  • 8:56 - 8:58
own all of them and uphold all of them.
  • 8:58 - 9:00
    Here's a star that's His star
  • 9:00 - 9:04
    and it's uniquely there
  • 9:04 - 9:10
for His coming into this world.
  • 9:10 - 9:12
"For we saw His star when it rose
  • 9:12 - 9:15
and have come to worship Him."
  • 9:15 - 9:16
Now jump down to v. 7.
  • 9:16 - 9:18
I'm just going to give you the verses here
  • 9:18 - 9:21
that speak specifically of this star.
  • 9:21 - 9:27
"Then Herod summoned the wise men secretly
  • 9:27 - 9:28
    and ascertained from them
  • 9:28 - 9:33
what time the star had appeared."
  • 9:33 - 9:35
    You see, there was a
    time that it appeared.
  • 9:35 - 9:39
    Before that, it hadn't appeared.
  • 9:39 - 9:41
And you know, after these Magi
  • 9:41 - 9:43
    find the Christ,
  • 9:43 - 9:44
    there's no biblical evidence
  • 9:44 - 9:50
    that it ever appeared again.
  • 9:50 - 9:56
    V. 9, "After listening
    to the king (Herod,)
  • 9:56 - 9:59
    they went on their way,
  • 9:59 - 10:02
and behold, the star that they had seen
  • 10:02 - 10:05
    when it rose..."
  • 10:05 - 10:08
That's how they talked about it.
  • 10:08 - 10:17
They said, "we saw His star when it rose."
  • 10:17 - 10:18
    It rose.
  • 10:18 - 10:21
Like the sun rises, the moon rises.
  • 10:21 - 10:22
    The stars also rise,
  • 10:22 - 10:25
    because we're spinning.
  • 10:25 - 10:27
    It rose.
  • 10:27 - 10:32
    And they saw it rise.
  • 10:32 - 10:37
    "The star that they
    had seen when it rose..."
  • 10:37 - 10:39
    Now, here's the thing,
  • 10:39 - 10:42
    it rose like other stars
  • 10:42 - 10:44
that come up over the horizon,
  • 10:44 - 10:47
but now it went before them.
  • 10:47 - 10:50
    That's really an interesting statement.
  • 10:50 - 10:56
    "It went before them
  • 10:56 - 11:03
    until it came to rest."
  • 11:03 - 11:09
    Is that like the sun
    stopping in its orbit?
  • 11:09 - 11:11
    Is that a linear thing
  • 11:11 - 11:13
    where it basically tracks straight
  • 11:13 - 11:16
    and then it stopped?
  • 11:16 - 11:18
    Or is this thing moving,
  • 11:18 - 11:19
    like it goes that way
  • 11:19 - 11:22
    and it goes this way?
  • 11:22 - 11:24
    It came to rest.
  • 11:24 - 11:27
There was motion in this star.
  • 11:27 - 11:31
And then it came to rest.
  • 11:31 - 11:35
"...over the place where the child was.
  • 11:35 - 11:38
    When they saw the star,
  • 11:38 - 11:42
    they rejoiced exceedingly
  • 11:42 - 11:46
    with great joy."
  • 11:46 - 11:49
    Now, here's the first thing.
  • 11:49 - 11:53
The first thing I want to emphasize:
  • 11:53 - 11:58
    The historicity of this thing.
  • 11:58 - 12:00
    It's historical.
  • 12:00 - 12:02
    We're talking about actual events
  • 12:02 - 12:05
that actually happened in the course
  • 12:05 - 12:07
    of human history.
  • 12:07 - 12:09
    There was a star.
  • 12:09 - 12:10
    It's real.
  • 12:10 - 12:11
    It's not fictitious.
  • 12:11 - 12:13
    There were Magi.
  • 12:13 - 12:15
    They're not imaginary - they're real.
  • 12:15 - 12:18
There was the birth of the child King.
  • 12:18 - 12:20
We are talking about reality here.
  • 12:20 - 12:22
    We are talking about fact.
  • 12:22 - 12:24
    We are talking about history.
  • 12:24 - 12:26
    I stress this.
  • 12:26 - 12:28
    Brethren, I stress this.
  • 12:28 - 12:31
Because we are in the midst of a world
  • 12:31 - 12:34
that is controlled by the evil one.
  • 12:34 - 12:37
There is satanic deception on every side.
  • 12:37 - 12:38
    And what did Paul fear?
  • 12:38 - 12:40
What did Paul fear for the Corinthians?
  • 12:40 - 12:43
That Satan would do what to them?
  • 12:43 - 12:45
    That he would deceive them
  • 12:45 - 12:47
and move them away from this
  • 12:47 - 12:52
    simple devotion to Christ.
  • 12:52 - 12:54
    There is so much falsehood.
  • 12:54 - 12:55
    You know what?
  • 12:55 - 12:57
    We might say,
  • 12:57 - 12:58
    well, we have to remember
  • 12:58 - 13:00
    the reason for the season.
  • 13:00 - 13:02
Look, I don't know who the author
  • 13:02 - 13:03
    of this season is,
  • 13:03 - 13:09
but oftentimes I suspect it's not God.
  • 13:09 - 13:12
Brethren, let me tell you something.
  • 13:12 - 13:14
Yeah, it's true that during this time
  • 13:14 - 13:15
    of the year,
  • 13:15 - 13:18
    the world will tolerate
    the mention of Jesus.
  • 13:18 - 13:19
    They will tolerate
  • 13:19 - 13:22
    "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing."
  • 13:22 - 13:24
But you know as well as I do
  • 13:24 - 13:25
that right next to the manger scene
  • 13:25 - 13:26
    is Santa Claus.
  • 13:26 - 13:28
And right next to "Hark! The Herald..."
  • 13:28 - 13:30
is "Santa Claus is Coming to Town,"
  • 13:30 - 13:33
and "Rudolph," and "Frosty," and all that.
  • 13:33 - 13:34
    And you see, we say,
  • 13:34 - 13:37
the world basically has this mindset.
  • 13:37 - 13:38
We're going to deceive our children
  • 13:38 - 13:39
    with these things;
  • 13:39 - 13:41
    tell them that Santa's real,
  • 13:41 - 13:43
but then at some point we know
  • 13:43 - 13:45
that they're going to be undeceived.
  • 13:45 - 13:47
We try to push the lie as far as possible.
  • 13:47 - 13:49
But you see, all the lies get mixed in
  • 13:49 - 13:50
    with anything that's true.
  • 13:50 - 13:53
And even what's true is stretched
  • 13:53 - 13:55
    to where it's not true.
  • 13:55 - 13:57
Since when did the wise men
  • 13:57 - 13:59
    come to a stable?
  • 13:59 - 14:00
    They didn't.
  • 14:00 - 14:02
Since when was the star over the stable?
  • 14:02 - 14:04
    It wasn't.
  • 14:04 - 14:06
Since when did the wise men
  • 14:06 - 14:07
    ride camels?
  • 14:07 - 14:09
    It never says so.
  • 14:09 - 14:11
Since when were there three of them?
  • 14:11 - 14:13
    There wasn't.
  • 14:13 - 14:15
I mean, what we have is all manner
  • 14:15 - 14:17
    of fictitious stuff
  • 14:17 - 14:19
    all thrown together
  • 14:19 - 14:21
    with a bunch of lies.
  • 14:21 - 14:24
Brethren, this season men talk about
  • 14:24 - 14:26
good will, but it's a lie.
  • 14:26 - 14:27
    Men don't have good will
  • 14:27 - 14:28
    towards one another.
  • 14:28 - 14:30
And then, this idea that what?
  • 14:30 - 14:32
    We're going to worship Christ
  • 14:32 - 14:33
one time out of the year?
  • 14:33 - 14:35
As we remember, the Lord's Supper
  • 14:35 - 14:38
is as often as you do this.
  • 14:38 - 14:39
    It's an ongoing thing.
  • 14:39 - 14:41
It isn't once a year at Christmas
  • 14:41 - 14:43
or twice a year at Christmas and Easter.
  • 14:43 - 14:45
    It's a deception.
  • 14:45 - 14:46
What it wants to do is say
  • 14:46 - 14:50
you know it's ok to mix all this
  • 14:50 - 14:53
error with some things that might be true.
  • 14:53 - 14:54
And as though we're just going to
  • 14:54 - 14:56
be able to discern what's true,
  • 14:56 - 14:57
    what's not true.
  • 14:57 - 14:59
Well, we better be able to discern that.
  • 14:59 - 15:01
And we better be able to look
  • 15:01 - 15:02
at everything through the Word of God
  • 15:02 - 15:04
    and sort through it.
  • 15:04 - 15:05
We need to be discerning people.
  • 15:05 - 15:07
And so much of what happens
  • 15:07 - 15:08
    this time of the year
  • 15:08 - 15:09
    is a mirage.
  • 15:09 - 15:11
    It sets out a hope.
  • 15:11 - 15:12
    Oh, the Christmas spirit...
  • 15:12 - 15:14
    It gives people this hope.
  • 15:14 - 15:18
There is a sense of anticipation
  • 15:18 - 15:20
and expectation this time of year.
  • 15:20 - 15:21
    And what happens?
  • 15:21 - 15:23
It leaves men hollow and empty.
  • 15:23 - 15:25
    And what happens afterwards?
  • 15:25 - 15:27
    People have to be confronted
  • 15:27 - 15:28
    by the reality of life.
  • 15:28 - 15:30
    But I'll tell you this,
  • 15:30 - 15:31
    if you're a genuine Christian,
  • 15:31 - 15:33
    after the Christmas season
  • 15:33 - 15:34
    and New Year's is over,
  • 15:34 - 15:35
you're not left empty and hollow.
  • 15:35 - 15:36
    Why?
  • 15:36 - 15:37
    You've got the Christ!
  • 15:37 - 15:38
    You've got salvation!
  • 15:38 - 15:40
    You've got the real deal!
  • 15:40 - 15:42
It wasn't all hinged on Santa and presents
  • 15:42 - 15:45
and materialism and family coming together
  • 15:45 - 15:47
    and songs and football games
  • 15:47 - 15:48
and all the things that the world
  • 15:48 - 15:50
    looks forward to at this time;
  • 15:50 - 15:53
    drink and song and festivity.
  • 15:53 - 15:58
    If you've got the Christ,
    you've got Him forever!
  • 15:58 - 16:00
    And look, I'm not knocking
  • 16:00 - 16:02
if people get together as families.
  • 16:02 - 16:04
There's certainly nothing wrong with that.
  • 16:04 - 16:05
    I'm not knocking
  • 16:05 - 16:09
    if people come together
at this time of the year
  • 16:09 - 16:12
and they want to actually open up Luke 2.
  • 16:12 - 16:13
    I'm not knocking that.
  • 16:13 - 16:15
    But brethren, there is deception.
  • 16:15 - 16:20
    And this whole season is
    just full of deception.
  • 16:20 - 16:23
    It's everywhere.
  • 16:23 - 16:27
    Everywhere.
  • 16:27 - 16:32
We need to cut through the garbage.
  • 16:32 - 16:35
We need to cut through all the lies.
  • 16:35 - 16:38
    I'll tell you this,
  • 16:38 - 16:40
    Scripture tells us,
  • 16:40 - 16:46
there was a baby born 2,000 years ago.
  • 16:46 - 16:52
    This is history.
  • 16:52 - 16:54
A workplace at the North Pole?
  • 16:54 - 16:57
    That's not history.
  • 16:57 - 16:59
    That's akin to Mormonism.
  • 16:59 - 17:01
You want to make up fictitious lands,
  • 17:01 - 17:03
    fictitious places.
  • 17:03 - 17:06
    It's fiction.
  • 17:06 - 17:07
    But I'll tell you,
  • 17:07 - 17:08
there really was a baby born
  • 17:08 - 17:10
    2,000 years ago.
  • 17:10 - 17:12
And there really was a star
  • 17:12 - 17:14
    that wasn't there before.
  • 17:14 - 17:19
And there really were Magi who came.
  • 17:19 - 17:24
We're talking about a historical Christ.
  • 17:24 - 17:26
    We need to remember that.
  • 17:26 - 17:28
    This isn't myth.
  • 17:28 - 17:31
    This is history.
  • 17:31 - 17:32
And if anybody was the historian,
  • 17:32 - 17:34
    it was Luke.
  • 17:34 - 17:36
I mean Luke isn't messing around.
  • 17:36 - 17:38
He doesn't just dream up something
  • 17:38 - 17:39
    about the North Pole.
  • 17:39 - 17:41
    He's talking about real people
  • 17:41 - 17:44
in a real time in real places.
  • 17:44 - 17:48
You notice how articulate he is?
  • 17:48 - 17:49
    I mean, he tells us,
  • 17:49 - 17:53
in the days of Caesar Augustus.
  • 17:53 - 17:54
    In the days when Quirinius
  • 17:54 - 17:57
was in a certain position of leadership.
  • 17:57 - 18:00
    In those days...
  • 18:00 - 18:02
    He's very exact.
  • 18:02 - 18:03
    Look.
  • 18:03 - 18:07
    Look there at chapter 2:1.
  • 18:07 - 18:09
    "He was born in Bethlehem."
  • 18:09 - 18:10
    It's a real place.
  • 18:10 - 18:11
    It's not like these places
  • 18:11 - 18:12
    that the Mormons dream up
  • 18:12 - 18:14
    that nobody can find.
  • 18:14 - 18:16
    These are real places.
  • 18:16 - 18:18
    Bethlehem of Judea.
  • 18:18 - 18:19
    And real days.
  • 18:19 - 18:20
    What days?
  • 18:20 - 18:22
In the days of Herod the King,
  • 18:22 - 18:24
behold, wise men from the East
  • 18:24 - 18:26
    came to Jerusalem.
  • 18:26 - 18:28
    Real days.
  • 18:28 - 18:31
    Real places.
  • 18:31 - 18:33
    I'm quoting Matthew here,
  • 18:33 - 18:35
but we're going to look at Luke
  • 18:35 - 18:36
    in a second.
  • 18:36 - 18:38
Anyway, he was the real historian.
  • 18:38 - 18:39
    He spells this out.
  • 18:39 - 18:41
    In fact, you've got
    your finger there still.
  • 18:41 - 18:45
    Look over at Luke.
  • 18:45 - 18:49
    Luke 2.
  • 18:49 - 18:51
I mean, he's all the more historian
  • 18:51 - 18:52
    than Matthew was.
  • 18:52 - 18:53
    Like I said,
  • 18:53 - 18:55
    he's very articulate here.
  • 18:55 - 18:58
    "In those days..."
  • 18:58 - 18:59
    You see that?
  • 18:59 - 19:00
    Those days.
  • 19:00 - 19:01
    There were really days.
  • 19:01 - 19:04
    This is a historical account.
  • 19:04 - 19:08
"A decree went out from Caesar Augustus
  • 19:08 - 19:10
that all the world should be registered."
  • 19:10 - 19:13
    There was a registration.
  • 19:13 - 19:16
    There were really register books.
  • 19:16 - 19:18
There were places you went to register.
  • 19:18 - 19:20
    It was a taxation.
  • 19:20 - 19:25
    The people registered that
    they might be taxed.
  • 19:25 - 19:27
    Let's keep going here.
  • 19:27 - 19:29
    "This was the first registration
  • 19:29 - 19:33
when Quirinius was governer of Syria,
  • 19:33 - 19:34
and all went to be registered,
  • 19:34 - 19:37
    each to his own town."
  • 19:37 - 19:38
    (Incomplete thought)
  • 19:38 - 19:41
Look, this is the Word of God.
  • 19:41 - 19:43
This is true no matter what
    the history books say.
  • 19:43 - 19:46
In fact, you don't want to trust history.
  • 19:46 - 19:48
There's always somebody with an agenda.
  • 19:48 - 19:49
    And it's always being rewritten.
  • 19:49 - 19:51
And God has never promised to keep it
  • 19:51 - 19:53
    free of error.
  • 19:53 - 19:56
But you can even look at secular history,
  • 19:56 - 19:57
    and you know,
  • 19:57 - 19:59
    Caesar Augustus was real.
  • 19:59 - 20:00
    Quirinius was real.
  • 20:00 - 20:02
Look at your secular geography books.
  • 20:02 - 20:04
    You know Bethlehem is real.
  • 20:04 - 20:07
    Judah is real.
  • 20:07 - 20:12
    These are real places.
  • 20:12 - 20:17
    "In those days..."
  • 20:17 - 20:19
What Scripture will never let us
  • 20:19 - 20:20
    get away from is
  • 20:20 - 20:28
the fact that all of this is historical.
  • 20:28 - 20:31
    It's real.
  • 20:31 - 20:33
    It's there in Scripture.
  • 20:33 - 20:35
And you know what it will never
  • 20:35 - 20:37
let us get away from as well?
  • 20:37 - 20:41
    That the historical Christ
  • 20:41 - 20:44
    is the supernatural Christ.
  • 20:44 - 20:47
You don't want to get away from that.
  • 20:47 - 20:49
We've got a lot of people out here
  • 20:49 - 20:50
    in the world,
  • 20:50 - 20:51
they're ready and willing to admit
  • 20:51 - 20:53
    that Jesus was historical,
  • 20:53 - 20:55
    but if there's anything supernatural
  • 20:55 - 20:56
about Him, then they deny it.
  • 20:56 - 20:58
They don't want to go there.
  • 20:58 - 21:00
    This is simply the pride
    and arrogance of man.
  • 21:00 - 21:02
    Man says I cannot understand
  • 21:02 - 21:04
how a star can simply appear
  • 21:04 - 21:05
    where there wasn't one before.
  • 21:05 - 21:06
    I cannot understand it,
  • 21:06 - 21:11
therefore it must not be real.
  • 21:11 - 21:12
    This is constantly what happens
  • 21:12 - 21:16
    when little men face
  • 21:16 - 21:20
    the incomprehensible and supernatural
  • 21:20 - 21:22
divine being of the living God.
  • 21:22 - 21:24
    Well, we cannot understand it,
  • 21:24 - 21:26
    therefore we cannot believe it.
  • 21:26 - 21:30
    But the historical Christ
    is the supernatural Christ.
  • 21:30 - 21:31
    You look back then.
  • 21:31 - 21:32
    What did you see?
  • 21:32 - 21:33
    You see a virgin birth.
  • 21:33 - 21:34
You see a star in the sky.
  • 21:34 - 21:36
    You see the supernatural.
  • 21:36 - 21:37
    You see angels appearing
  • 21:37 - 21:39
    and declaring to the shepherds
  • 21:39 - 21:41
that the Christ has been born.
  • 21:41 - 21:43
    Christ - He is born.
  • 21:43 - 21:45
    And He lives His life
  • 21:45 - 21:47
and it's full of the supernatural.
  • 21:47 - 21:48
    Water made into wine.
  • 21:48 - 21:50
    He walked on water.
  • 21:50 - 21:51
    Where He went,
  • 21:51 - 21:53
    the supernatural happened.
  • 21:53 - 21:55
You see, God broke into history.
  • 21:55 - 21:58
And what happens when God becomes man
  • 21:58 - 22:01
is it just turns everything upside down.
  • 22:01 - 22:02
You can say, "I don't understand it."
  • 22:02 - 22:05
Well, there's a lot about it
    I don't understand either.
  • 22:05 - 22:08
But Scripture tells us it's so.
  • 22:08 - 22:12
    The historical Christ is
    a supernatural Christ.
  • 22:12 - 22:14
    And I'll tell you what,
  • 22:14 - 22:15
    the Word tells us
  • 22:15 - 22:16
    there was a star -
  • 22:16 - 22:18
a star created just for this occasion
  • 22:18 - 22:24
to lead a group of (get this) Gentiles
  • 22:24 - 22:26
    from a far away place
  • 22:26 - 22:27
to come and fall down and worship
  • 22:27 - 22:30
    before a baby.
  • 22:30 - 22:34
    And what a baby!
  • 22:34 - 22:40
    If you've got your
    finger still in Matthew 1,
  • 22:40 - 22:45
you can keep your fingers there.
  • 22:45 - 22:48
    It says in Matthew 1:21,
  • 22:48 - 22:52
    "She will bear a Son,
  • 22:52 - 22:53
and you shall call His name Jesus,
  • 22:53 - 22:55
for He will save His people
  • 22:55 - 22:57
    from their sins.
  • 22:57 - 23:01
    All this took place to
    fulfill the prophet.
  • 23:01 - 23:03
What the Lord had spoken by Isaiah,
  • 23:03 - 23:06
    'behold, the virgin shall conceive
  • 23:06 - 23:09
    and bear a Son,
  • 23:09 - 23:13
and they shall call His name Immanuel.'"
  • 23:13 - 23:15
We're not talking about the birth
  • 23:15 - 23:20
    of a great man.
  • 23:20 - 23:23
    God came among us.
  • 23:23 - 23:25
Oh, He was a great man,
  • 23:25 - 23:27
    but more.
  • 23:27 - 23:30
God came among us to be with us.
  • 23:30 - 23:31
    This is the Eternal One
  • 23:31 - 23:32
    coming into the world.
  • 23:32 - 23:34
    You know the verse.
  • 23:34 - 23:42
"In the beginning was the Word."
  • 23:42 - 23:45
    In the beginning.
  • 23:45 - 23:47
    What beginning?
  • 23:47 - 23:48
    Go back to the beginning.
  • 23:48 - 23:50
    Well, wasn't there something
  • 23:50 - 23:51
    before that beginning?
  • 23:51 - 23:53
Yeah, go back in the beginning
  • 23:53 - 23:55
    before that beginning.
  • 23:55 - 23:59
    Back, back, back, further back.
  • 23:59 - 24:03
    Before there was a beginning.
  • 24:03 - 24:05
    There's the Word.
  • 24:05 - 24:10
    And the Word was God.
  • 24:10 - 24:13
And the Word was with God.
  • 24:13 - 24:20
    And the Word became flesh.
  • 24:20 - 24:22
That's what we have going on here.
  • 24:22 - 24:26
    He didn't start to exist.
  • 24:26 - 24:31
You have a star in the sky.
  • 24:31 - 24:33
    And it's a messenger.
  • 24:33 - 24:36
    It's a beacon
  • 24:36 - 24:43
that God and humanity are coming together
  • 24:43 - 24:47
in the womb of a virgin
  • 24:47 - 24:50
to be born into the world.
  • 24:50 - 24:54
    That's what we have.
  • 24:54 - 24:58
    God coming into the world.
  • 24:58 - 25:01
    But you think about this,
  • 25:01 - 25:05
God coming into the world -
  • 25:05 - 25:11
think about what you have done.
  • 25:11 - 25:13
    You think about the things
  • 25:13 - 25:15
    you've done in your life.
  • 25:15 - 25:17
    God's coming into the world.
  • 25:17 - 25:17
    You hear that.
  • 25:17 - 25:19
    God's coming into the world.
  • 25:19 - 25:20
    You know what?
  • 25:20 - 25:23
This is the God Who has a score to settle.
  • 25:23 - 25:28
    We've done things.
  • 25:28 - 25:30
    I mean just that by
    itself is not good news.
  • 25:30 - 25:36
    That might actually be
    reason for some alarm.
  • 25:36 - 25:39
    But think about those words.
  • 25:39 - 25:43
I mean, those angels appeared out there
  • 25:43 - 25:46
    on those plains.
  • 25:46 - 25:48
    Quiet.
  • 25:48 - 25:51
    It's night.
  • 25:51 - 25:53
    It's peaceful.
  • 25:53 - 25:55
    The sheep.
  • 25:55 - 26:00
The shepherds standing watch by night.
  • 26:00 - 26:01
    And I mean, what happened?
  • 26:01 - 26:03
    The sky split open.
  • 26:03 - 26:07
    They weren't expecting that.
  • 26:07 - 26:09
    You would be shocked,
  • 26:09 - 26:10
    as I'm sure they were.
  • 26:10 - 26:13
But you've got to hear in those words,
  • 26:13 - 26:18
those angels said that that very day
  • 26:18 - 26:21
    a Savior was born.
  • 26:21 - 26:23
    Just think about those words.
  • 26:23 - 26:24
    That baby that came forth
  • 26:24 - 26:26
    is a Savior.
  • 26:26 - 26:28
    Sometimes we have to stop.
  • 26:28 - 26:30
It's kind of like the star hitting me
  • 26:30 - 26:30
    there in the prison.
  • 26:30 - 26:32
Sometimes you just have to stop
  • 26:32 - 26:33
    and hear that word:
  • 26:33 - 26:36
    Savior.
  • 26:36 - 26:39
    Somebody came to save us.
  • 26:39 - 26:42
    Somebody came to free us.
  • 26:42 - 26:44
    Savior.
  • 26:44 - 26:45
    He came to save us.
  • 26:45 - 26:47
He didn't come to destroy us.
  • 26:47 - 26:49
He's come to take our sins upon Himself.
  • 26:49 - 26:52
Not to deal with us according to our sins,
  • 26:52 - 26:55
    but that star that's shining
  • 26:55 - 26:58
up there in the sky -
  • 26:58 - 26:59
    it's a beacon of hope,
  • 26:59 - 27:01
not of destruction; not of doom.
  • 27:01 - 27:03
    That's the reality.
  • 27:03 - 27:04
    Listen to this.
  • 27:04 - 27:06
    Matthew 2.
  • 27:06 - 27:08
Look at it there in v. 10.
  • 27:08 - 27:10
    "When they saw the star..."
  • 27:10 - 27:11
    Not the shepherds -
  • 27:11 - 27:13
we're talking about the Magi here.
  • 27:13 - 27:16
    "When they saw the star,
  • 27:16 - 27:20
    they rejoiced exceedingly
  • 27:20 - 27:21
    with great joy."
  • 27:21 - 27:24
This is a reflection of the
    shepherd's joy as well.
  • 27:24 - 27:26
We could look over there at Luke 2.
  • 27:26 - 27:28
    There was joy.
  • 27:28 - 27:30
This One Who came into the world
  • 27:30 - 27:33
    came to produce joy.
  • 27:33 - 27:34
    Listen!
  • 27:34 - 27:39
That's not what this world experiences
  • 27:39 - 27:46
    in this season of Christmas.
  • 27:46 - 27:47
    There's a hope.
  • 27:47 - 27:49
    There's an anticipation.
  • 27:49 - 27:53
There may be some kind of cheer
  • 27:53 - 27:57
    and happiness.
  • 27:57 - 28:01
    But not the abiding joy.
  • 28:01 - 28:03
    Rejoice in the Lord always,
  • 28:03 - 28:06
    and again I say, rejoice.
  • 28:06 - 28:16
The world doesn't rejoice come January.
  • 28:16 - 28:20
    Something was happening here.
  • 28:20 - 28:22
    Here's the thing,
  • 28:22 - 28:25
    even though it's misplaced -
  • 28:25 - 28:29
the star was not over the stable.
  • 28:29 - 28:31
The star didn't lead the Magi
  • 28:31 - 28:32
    to the stable.
  • 28:32 - 28:37
The star led the Magi to the house
  • 28:37 - 28:41
where Joseph and Mary and the baby were
  • 28:41 - 28:47
    after the Christ was born.
  • 28:47 - 28:48
So when you see the manger scene,
  • 28:48 - 28:49
    you see a star there,
  • 28:49 - 28:51
    it's misplaced.
  • 28:51 - 28:53
How it ever got on top of a Christmas tree
  • 28:53 - 28:55
    I don't know.
  • 28:55 - 28:57
But I can tell you this,
  • 28:57 - 29:00
    you see that star on
    top of a Christmas tree;
  • 29:00 - 29:03
you see that star on the front of a stable
  • 29:03 - 29:07
or the back wall of the stable,
  • 29:07 - 29:10
you can think about what that means.
  • 29:10 - 29:14
That thing shined in the sky
  • 29:14 - 29:18
    guiding men to a Savior.
  • 29:18 - 29:22
    A Savior has come.
  • 29:22 - 29:25
    Man need not be damned.
  • 29:25 - 29:27
    A Savior has come.
  • 29:27 - 29:29
    God has come!
  • 29:29 - 29:32
    Immanuel: God with us
  • 29:32 - 29:34
to redeem us, to help us,
  • 29:34 - 29:36
to save us, to take us to glory,
  • 29:36 - 29:38
    to give us life everlasting,
  • 29:38 - 29:40
    to give us pleasures forevermore
  • 29:40 - 29:41
    at His right hand,
  • 29:41 - 29:43
    to give us life,
  • 29:43 - 29:44
    life more abundantly,
  • 29:44 - 29:46
    to free us.
  • 29:46 - 29:48
    Brethren, to forgive us!
  • 29:48 - 29:50
    No lake of fire!
  • 29:50 - 29:51
I deserve the lake of fire.
  • 29:51 - 29:53
    That's what that star says.
  • 29:53 - 29:57
    There's hope.
  • 29:57 - 29:59
    That's what it was saying.
  • 29:59 - 30:00
    Now listen,
  • 30:00 - 30:03
I want you to think about this.
  • 30:03 - 30:07
    (Incomplete thought)
  • 30:07 - 30:12
I cannot help but see election
  • 30:12 - 30:13
    in that star.
  • 30:13 - 30:14
    You say, election?
  • 30:14 - 30:15
    What do you mean?
  • 30:15 - 30:16
    I mean this.
  • 30:16 - 30:17
I mean that God chooses some people
  • 30:17 - 30:19
    and not other people.
  • 30:19 - 30:20
    You say, really?
  • 30:20 - 30:23
Well, look, if you haven't been here
    for our Ephesians series
  • 30:23 - 30:24
and you're calling that into question,
  • 30:24 - 30:26
I would encourage you to go study
  • 30:26 - 30:27
the first 14 verses of Ephesians,
  • 30:27 - 30:30
because you will not come away
  • 30:30 - 30:32
    convinced that election doesn't exist
  • 30:32 - 30:34
if you have eyes to see
  • 30:34 - 30:36
    what those verses say.
  • 30:36 - 30:37
    But in that star,
  • 30:37 - 30:40
    I see election.
  • 30:40 - 30:41
You say, what are you talking about?
  • 30:41 - 30:43
    What do you mean?
  • 30:43 - 30:46
    How do you see that?
  • 30:46 - 30:48
    Let me explain.
  • 30:48 - 30:50
    Just think with me.
  • 30:50 - 30:52
David and I were talking about this
  • 30:52 - 30:55
    the other night.
  • 30:55 - 30:58
    A star appears.
  • 30:58 - 30:59
    A new star.
  • 30:59 - 31:00
    Something nobody's ever seen before.
  • 31:00 - 31:02
A new star appears in the sky.
  • 31:02 - 31:05
Here's the first question I would ask you.
  • 31:05 - 31:09
    Who would even notice?
  • 31:09 - 31:11
    I mean, the truth is,
  • 31:11 - 31:17
if a new star appeared in the sky tonight,
  • 31:17 - 31:19
    would you notice?
  • 31:19 - 31:22
    I wouldn't.
  • 31:22 - 31:24
    I came to the prayer
    meeting the other night,
  • 31:24 - 31:27
    and these are the
    shortest days of the year,
  • 31:27 - 31:28
and so it was already getting dark
  • 31:28 - 31:32
when I showed up around 6:30.
  • 31:32 - 31:34
    The Montgomery's were out here.
  • 31:34 - 31:36
    And somebody made a comment
  • 31:36 - 31:39
about a star in the sky.
  • 31:39 - 31:40
We were surmising that it was
  • 31:40 - 31:43
    probably a planet.
  • 31:43 - 31:44
    It was bright.
  • 31:44 - 31:45
    But you know what,
  • 31:45 - 31:47
if there had been two up there,
  • 31:47 - 31:48
    I'd have just said,
  • 31:48 - 31:51
    it's two planets.
  • 31:51 - 31:53
I would not have gone home,
  • 31:53 - 31:54
    packed the car,
  • 31:54 - 31:56
    put the family in
  • 31:56 - 31:57
and headed out in the direction
  • 31:57 - 31:59
    where the star was.
  • 31:59 - 32:01
I would not have taken it as a sign
  • 32:01 - 32:04
that I needed to go to Canada.
  • 32:04 - 32:05
    I wouldn't have even noticed
  • 32:05 - 32:10
    that it was even new.
  • 32:10 - 32:12
    A star appeared.
  • 32:12 - 32:14
    They said to Herod,
  • 32:14 - 32:19
    we saw it rise.
  • 32:19 - 32:22
    Huh. They saw it.
  • 32:22 - 32:28
    You know, who notices
a new star in the sky?
  • 32:28 - 32:30
    I'll tell you who notices,
  • 32:30 - 32:32
somebody who's looking at the sky.
  • 32:32 - 32:34
Somebody who looks at those things.
  • 32:34 - 32:38
    Somebody who pays
    attention to those things.
  • 32:38 - 32:40
These are people that paid attention.
  • 32:40 - 32:43
    And here's the thing
  • 32:43 - 32:47
    God put that star
  • 32:47 - 32:52
    where these people were looking.
  • 32:52 - 32:55
You say, you see election in that?
  • 32:55 - 32:57
    Yeah, I do.
  • 32:57 - 32:59
Because He put it where these folks
  • 32:59 - 33:03
    were looking.
  • 33:03 - 33:05
    Other people may be looking
  • 33:05 - 33:06
    in other places,
  • 33:06 - 33:09
but He didn't put it in those places.
  • 33:09 - 33:10
    The sign.
  • 33:10 - 33:11
    He put it here.
  • 33:11 - 33:14
Now there may be other signs.
  • 33:14 - 33:17
But He put one right where these people
  • 33:17 - 33:20
    would look at it.
  • 33:20 - 33:22
    And like I say,
  • 33:22 - 33:25
    here's another thing.
  • 33:25 - 33:29
Even if you discover a new star,
  • 33:29 - 33:31
or even if you said, hey,
  • 33:31 - 33:32
    we watch the sky.
  • 33:32 - 33:34
    We're astronomers.
  • 33:34 - 33:36
    We track the stars.
  • 33:36 - 33:42
There is a star that was
    not there last year.
  • 33:42 - 33:44
    Like I say,
  • 33:44 - 33:46
    who packs the camels?
  • 33:46 - 33:48
    Or the mules?
  • 33:48 - 33:53
Or the horses and heads off to Jerusalem?
  • 33:53 - 33:57
    Why would you do that?
  • 33:57 - 34:00
    It's like seeing a tree
    you never saw before.
  • 34:00 - 34:03
You don't just pack up and move
  • 34:03 - 34:08
    because something's
    new in your environment.
  • 34:08 - 34:11
    But that's what they did.
  • 34:11 - 34:12
    And there's more.
  • 34:12 - 34:15
You know that when these Magi
  • 34:15 - 34:16
got to where they were going -
  • 34:16 - 34:18
in fact, if you look here
  • 34:18 - 34:24
in Matthew 2, you will see that
  • 34:24 - 34:28
in v. 11, "...going into the house,
  • 34:28 - 34:30
    they saw the child."
  • 34:30 - 34:32
They actually went in the house.
  • 34:32 - 34:34
    They weren't standing
    out front of a stable.
  • 34:34 - 34:38
    They went in the house.
  • 34:38 - 34:40
"They saw the child with Mary, His mother,
  • 34:40 - 34:42
and they fell down and worshiped Him
  • 34:42 - 34:44
    then opening their treasures,
  • 34:44 - 34:46
    they offered Him gifts -
  • 34:46 - 34:47
    gold, frankincense, and myrrh."
  • 34:47 - 34:49
    You say, what about that?
  • 34:49 - 34:51
    Just this:
  • 34:51 - 34:57
So God put a star where they could see it.
  • 34:57 - 34:59
    But when they saw it,
  • 34:59 - 35:00
    they packed up.
  • 35:00 - 35:01
    And as they're packing up,
  • 35:01 - 35:03
they just didn't put food and water
  • 35:03 - 35:05
    in their bags,
  • 35:05 - 35:08
they put treasures in their bags.
  • 35:08 - 35:10
    Why?
  • 35:10 - 35:16
    Because, listen, when
    they got to Jerusalem,
  • 35:16 - 35:21
    they specifically said to Herod;
  • 35:21 - 35:25
they specifically said to the Jews,
  • 35:25 - 35:30
"We have seen His star -
  • 35:30 - 35:33
    the King of Israel."
  • 35:33 - 35:35
    Ok, now here's this.
  • 35:35 - 35:37
Not only who packs up the camels
  • 35:37 - 35:40
or the horses when they see a star,
  • 35:40 - 35:43
but who sees a star and says
  • 35:43 - 35:45
we've got to go to Jerusalem
  • 35:45 - 35:47
    because this means that
    the King of the Jews
  • 35:47 - 35:48
    has been born?
  • 35:48 - 35:49
    I'll tell you this.
  • 35:49 - 35:52
    The Magi had revelation.
  • 35:52 - 35:54
Something was going on with the Magi
  • 35:54 - 35:55
that wasn't going on with other people.
  • 35:55 - 35:57
God was dealing with these Magi
  • 35:57 - 35:59
in a way that was very specific.
  • 35:59 - 36:01
    Do you see election here?
  • 36:01 - 36:02
    God deals with different people
  • 36:02 - 36:04
    in different ways.
  • 36:04 - 36:05
    These people had a blessing.
  • 36:05 - 36:07
These people had their eyes opened
  • 36:07 - 36:11
in a way that other people simply did not.
  • 36:11 - 36:14
    Here's another thing:
  • 36:14 - 36:20
    Even more telling is that
  • 36:20 - 36:25
    when they got to Jerusalem,
  • 36:25 - 36:28
you notice there's no indication -
  • 36:28 - 36:32
    listen to this:
  • 36:32 - 36:37
    Here they come
  • 36:37 - 36:39
    to Jerusalem.
  • 36:39 - 36:41
    Matthew 2:1.
  • 36:41 - 36:43
    And what do they say?
  • 36:43 - 36:45
"Where is He Who has been born
  • 36:45 - 36:47
    King of the Jews?"
  • 36:47 - 36:49
Well, now, they would have known
  • 36:49 - 36:50
    those in Jerusalem
  • 36:50 - 36:51
    who he was speaking about.
  • 36:51 - 36:53
He was speaking about the Messiah.
  • 36:53 - 36:54
"For we saw His star when it rose
  • 36:54 - 36:56
and have come forth to worship Him."
  • 36:56 - 36:58
You see, they came with an agenda.
  • 36:58 - 37:00
    That star was all about
  • 37:00 - 37:04
    going to worship Jesus Christ.
  • 37:04 - 37:05
"When Herod the king heard this,
  • 37:05 - 37:07
    he was troubled and all
    Jerusalem with him.
  • 37:07 - 37:09
    They assembled the chief priests
  • 37:09 - 37:11
and scribes and he inquired of them
  • 37:11 - 37:12
where the Christ was to be born."
  • 37:12 - 37:14
They knew exactly Who this was.
  • 37:14 - 37:15
    It was the Christ.
  • 37:15 - 37:19
    "And he said, 'Bethlehem.'"
  • 37:19 - 37:21
    V. 7 "Herod summoned the wise men
  • 37:21 - 37:23
    and secretly ascertained from them
  • 37:23 - 37:24
the time the star had appeared.
  • 37:24 - 37:26
He sent them to Bethlehem saying,
  • 37:26 - 37:28
'Go and search diligently for the child,
  • 37:28 - 37:30
and when you have found Him,
bring me word that I too may
  • 37:30 - 37:31
    come and worship Him.'
  • 37:31 - 37:33
    After listening to the king
  • 37:33 - 37:38
    they went on their way."
  • 37:38 - 37:43
You know what I find extremely interesting
  • 37:43 - 37:45
    is this:
  • 37:45 - 37:49
    They not only knew
  • 37:49 - 37:54
    and recognized the
    significance of that star,
  • 37:54 - 37:58
they were the only ones who did.
  • 37:58 - 38:00
You say, what do you mean?
  • 38:00 - 38:03
    I mean this:
  • 38:03 - 38:06
You notice they went on the Bethlehem.
  • 38:06 - 38:09
All the Jews that were gathered together -
  • 38:09 - 38:12
    none of them went.
  • 38:12 - 38:14
None of the Jewish leaders went.
  • 38:14 - 38:16
None of the political leaders went.
  • 38:16 - 38:18
    Herod didn't pack his horses
  • 38:18 - 38:24
and his gold and frankincense and myrrh.
  • 38:24 - 38:29
    They went on by themselves.
  • 38:29 - 38:32
I mean, you have the Magi come
  • 38:32 - 38:35
and explain the significance of the star.
  • 38:35 - 38:39
    They still didn't go.
  • 38:39 - 38:41
The presence of the coming Christ
  • 38:41 - 38:43
    is proclaimed by this star.
  • 38:43 - 38:47
    Who are the Magi?
  • 38:47 - 38:49
    They're not Jews.
  • 38:49 - 38:53
    They're just foreigners.
  • 38:53 - 38:55
    A band of foreigners.
  • 38:55 - 38:57
    We don't know how many.
  • 38:57 - 38:59
    It doesn't say three.
  • 38:59 - 39:01
    It doesn't call them kings.
  • 39:01 - 39:04
    Not "We Three Kings..."
  • 39:04 - 39:06
    It's the Magi.
  • 39:06 - 39:07
    Foreigners.
  • 39:07 - 39:09
    Isn't it interesting?
  • 39:09 - 39:10
I mean, think with me here.
  • 39:10 - 39:12
    God gives us this picture
  • 39:12 - 39:15
    about the coming of His
    Son into the world,
  • 39:15 - 39:19
and who are the only people
  • 39:19 - 39:23
who are on the same wavelength with God?
  • 39:23 - 39:28
    A band of foreigners.
  • 39:28 - 39:30
    God chooses people.
  • 39:30 - 39:32
God puts His hand on people.
  • 39:32 - 39:34
    God opens certain people's eyes
  • 39:34 - 39:36
    and not others.
  • 39:36 - 39:39
That's what you see going on here.
  • 39:39 - 39:41
And then, I just draw your attention
  • 39:41 - 39:43
    back to v. 9-10 again.
  • 39:43 - 39:45
    "Listening to the king, they
    went on their way.
  • 39:45 - 39:47
    And behold the star,
  • 39:47 - 39:49
that they had seen when it rose
  • 39:49 - 39:51
went before them until it came to rest
  • 39:51 - 39:53
over the place where the child was.
  • 39:53 - 39:54
    When they saw the star,
  • 39:54 - 39:57
they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy."
  • 39:57 - 40:01
Brethren, I do see election in this star.
  • 40:01 - 40:06
Why? The star went before them.
  • 40:06 - 40:08
    It went before them.
  • 40:08 - 40:12
Listen, this star is leading them.
  • 40:12 - 40:15
It's like the thing is alive.
  • 40:15 - 40:20
There is a living God behind it.
  • 40:20 - 40:24
    And it directs them: foreigners.
  • 40:24 - 40:26
Not the Jews. Not the Pharisees.
  • 40:26 - 40:29
Not the scribes. Not the priests.
  • 40:29 - 40:31
    Not Herod. Not his entourage.
  • 40:31 - 40:35
    Not the Romans.
  • 40:35 - 40:39
    Some Magi from the East.
  • 40:39 - 40:40
    Isn't that amazing?
  • 40:40 - 40:42
It's kind of like Jesus saying,
  • 40:42 - 40:44
    you know there are many lepers;
  • 40:44 - 40:47
    there are many widows.
  • 40:47 - 40:49
Doesn't God have a way of
  • 40:49 - 40:54
    just choosing the insignificant.
  • 40:54 - 40:58
    He chooses those we
    often would least expect.
  • 40:58 - 41:02
Are you still floored by that?
  • 41:02 - 41:07
    God chose me.
  • 41:07 - 41:11
    There's election.
  • 41:11 - 41:14
    In the same way, brethren,
  • 41:14 - 41:18
    most are unaware.
  • 41:18 - 41:23
    Most are unaware of
    the significance of things.
  • 41:23 - 41:25
Do you recognize that that is true
  • 41:25 - 41:28
on this morning that the world labels
  • 41:28 - 41:33
    as Christmas Day?
  • 41:33 - 41:36
    Everybody thinks what's significant?
  • 41:36 - 41:37
    The presents.
  • 41:37 - 41:38
    The family.
  • 41:38 - 41:39
    The tree.
  • 41:39 - 41:42
    The lights.
  • 41:42 - 41:47
How many people are truly connected
  • 41:47 - 41:53
    with what's really
    significant in this world?
  • 41:53 - 41:57
Maybe a little band of foreigners
  • 41:57 - 42:00
    that meet in this place?
  • 42:00 - 42:03
    We're outsiders.
  • 42:03 - 42:07
    Gentiles.
  • 42:07 - 42:10
    Those who are far off.
  • 42:10 - 42:12
    Most are unaware.
  • 42:12 - 42:14
    Think about even the night
  • 42:14 - 42:16
    when Jesus was born.
  • 42:16 - 42:17
    By the way,
  • 42:17 - 42:20
you recognize the time differential here.
  • 42:20 - 42:22
    Christ was born;
  • 42:22 - 42:24
they laid Him in a manger.
  • 42:24 - 42:26
    It really doesn't even say
    that there was a stable.
  • 42:26 - 42:30
The manger may have been under the stars.
  • 42:30 - 42:32
    The shepherds came.
  • 42:32 - 42:35
It was sometime later that the Magi
  • 42:35 - 42:39
    arrived at the house
  • 42:39 - 42:43
where Joseph had taken his family.
  • 42:43 - 42:45
    His family was from there.
  • 42:45 - 42:47
It may have very well been family.
  • 42:47 - 42:50
But that night when Jesus was born,
  • 42:50 - 42:54
do you notice how unaware the world was?
  • 42:54 - 42:56
    You just think about it.
  • 42:56 - 43:00
People just go on with their lives.
  • 43:00 - 43:02
    What was happening?
  • 43:02 - 43:04
    There was a registration.
  • 43:04 - 43:06
Oh, you think that stirred people up?
  • 43:06 - 43:07
    You think that was something
  • 43:07 - 43:08
    they were talking about?
  • 43:08 - 43:10
You think if we got conquered
  • 43:10 - 43:11
    by a foreign power,
  • 43:11 - 43:13
the Romans - Caesar comes in
  • 43:13 - 43:15
and he sets up a registration
  • 43:15 - 43:16
where we have to all go register
  • 43:16 - 43:18
    and pay our taxes.
  • 43:18 - 43:20
    If you're somebody like Joseph
  • 43:20 - 43:22
and you actually have to pack up
  • 43:22 - 43:24
in Nazareth and travel to Bethlehem
  • 43:24 - 43:26
because that's where your family is from.
  • 43:26 - 43:29
    That's what was required.
  • 43:29 - 43:31
You can look at the secular history books.
  • 43:31 - 43:34
    They had various
    registrations in these days.
  • 43:34 - 43:36
And they would make people go
  • 43:36 - 43:37
to where their families were from.
  • 43:37 - 43:39
    And they would go there
  • 43:39 - 43:40
and they would pay these taxes.
  • 43:40 - 43:44
If an outsider like Caesar came in
  • 43:44 - 43:46
    and took over your country,
  • 43:46 - 43:47
    and then taxed you.
  • 43:47 - 43:48
And now made you travel -
  • 43:48 - 43:50
pack up your family and travel,
  • 43:50 - 43:52
    now it's affecting you monetarily,
  • 43:52 - 43:53
not only in the tax you pay,
  • 43:53 - 43:55
but in the fact you can't stay and work
  • 43:55 - 43:58
the farm and work your home.
  • 43:58 - 44:00
You've got to leave your business.
  • 44:00 - 44:01
    Joseph would leave
  • 44:01 - 44:04
if he was a carpenter in those early days
  • 44:04 - 44:06
he would have to leave that trade.
  • 44:06 - 44:07
    So now there's no income.
  • 44:07 - 44:08
    And he has to travel
  • 44:08 - 44:10
    and pay the traveling expenses.
  • 44:10 - 44:12
You know what it was like in the inn?
  • 44:12 - 44:14
    Everybody was complaining.
  • 44:14 - 44:16
    Everybody was talking about
what this was doing to them financially.
  • 44:16 - 44:18
You know how it is in our world?
  • 44:18 - 44:20
    Everybody's talking about
    the new president.
  • 44:20 - 44:22
    They would have been talking
  • 44:22 - 44:28
    about Caesar, taxes, finances.
  • 44:28 - 44:30
What it does to their whole
  • 44:30 - 44:31
    financial outlook.
  • 44:31 - 44:33
That's what people talk about today.
  • 44:33 - 44:35
That's what people are concerned about.
  • 44:35 - 44:37
    That's what they would have
    been concerned about back then.
  • 44:37 - 44:38
    The inn was full.
  • 44:38 - 44:39
    Why was the inn full?
  • 44:39 - 44:41
    Because everybody was
    traveling in those days.
  • 44:41 - 44:43
They were trying to get home.
  • 44:43 - 44:46
Trying to get home for the registration.
  • 44:46 - 44:48
    Caesar's taxing us.
  • 44:48 - 44:49
    It's all an inconvenience.
  • 44:49 - 44:51
    And yet, here's the thing.
  • 44:51 - 44:53
You can imagine them packed in there -
  • 44:53 - 44:53
    tight quarters.
  • 44:53 - 44:55
What are we going to do to eat?
  • 44:55 - 44:57
Here we are. We're all packed in.
  • 44:57 - 44:58
    Everybody's traveling.
  • 44:58 - 45:00
    We've got to find food.
  • 45:00 - 45:01
We've got to find our meals.
  • 45:01 - 45:03
We've got to provide for the family.
  • 45:03 - 45:06
Ah, this tax! How much is the tax?
  • 45:06 - 45:09
    It's too high! It's
    always too high, right?
  • 45:09 - 45:10
    Everybody complains about taxes
  • 45:10 - 45:11
    being too high.
  • 45:11 - 45:12
    They would have complained.
  • 45:12 - 45:14
Do you think they were somehow sanctified
  • 45:14 - 45:15
    back in those days?
  • 45:15 - 45:17
    And they were entirely different?
  • 45:17 - 45:19
And they all were back there
  • 45:19 - 45:22
    in this imaginary manger scene
  • 45:22 - 45:24
    with a placarded on star
  • 45:24 - 45:25
    on the front of it?
  • 45:25 - 45:27
And all had halos over their heads?
  • 45:27 - 45:29
And everybody was out there saying
  • 45:29 - 45:31
    oh, this is the greatest
    thing in the world?
  • 45:31 - 45:32
    No, that's not what happened.
  • 45:32 - 45:38
What you had was some unobtrusive,
  • 45:38 - 45:48
    insignificant couple came in there.
  • 45:48 - 45:51
    This young girl's back there.
  • 45:51 - 45:52
It doesn't even say in a stable.
  • 45:52 - 45:53
    Maybe she was.
  • 45:53 - 45:54
    I mean, if you're Joseph,
  • 45:54 - 45:57
    you would have tried
    to find a protected area
  • 45:57 - 45:58
    since there was no room.
  • 45:58 - 46:02
    She's giving birth.
  • 46:02 - 46:04
    Just insignificant.
  • 46:04 - 46:05
The crowds are in the inn.
  • 46:05 - 46:07
    Nobody's out there.
  • 46:07 - 46:08
    Nobody cares.
  • 46:08 - 46:14
In fact, until the shepherds got there,
  • 46:14 - 46:17
    it doesn't even say
    there were animals there.
  • 46:17 - 46:18
A manger is what animals eat out of,
  • 46:18 - 46:20
but we don't even know that.
  • 46:20 - 46:21
    But it's an inn,
  • 46:21 - 46:22
    people were traveling,
  • 46:22 - 46:23
you can be sure there were...
  • 46:23 - 46:26
The carts; it was probably relatively
  • 46:26 - 46:27
    packed back there.
  • 46:27 - 46:29
And you may have had people back there.
  • 46:29 - 46:31
If you're Joseph, you're going to try
  • 46:31 - 46:34
to get her in as protected and quiet
  • 46:34 - 46:35
    a back corner.
  • 46:35 - 46:36
    Can you imagine, ladies?
  • 46:36 - 46:39
    You're required to travel
  • 46:39 - 46:41
    at nine months pregnancy?
  • 46:41 - 46:44
And you're at an inn and there's no room?
  • 46:44 - 46:46
Back on the straw with you,
  • 46:46 - 46:48
one of the most amazing things
  • 46:48 - 46:53
is happening in all of human history.
  • 46:53 - 46:56
And the world is just disconnected.
  • 46:56 - 46:58
    The momentus thing imaginable
  • 46:58 - 47:00
    is happening back there.
  • 47:00 - 47:01
    Maybe it's a stable. Wherever.
  • 47:01 - 47:03
    So quiet.
  • 47:03 - 47:04
    So ordinary.
  • 47:04 - 47:06
    No fanfare.
  • 47:06 - 47:08
    Everyone caught up in
    the events of the day.
  • 47:08 - 47:10
    No one took notice.
  • 47:10 - 47:12
Nobody's giving any concern to this.
  • 47:12 - 47:13
    No account.
  • 47:13 - 47:15
Some girl back there on the straw -
  • 47:15 - 47:16
    she's having a baby.
  • 47:16 - 47:18
They lay it in probably some rough,
  • 47:18 - 47:21
    wooden animal trough.
  • 47:21 - 47:23
When the shepherds came to town,
  • 47:23 - 47:26
that's what they were looking for.
  • 47:26 - 47:31
Find a baby in the trough.
  • 47:31 - 47:33
    Salvation.
  • 47:33 - 47:34
    Do you recognize?
  • 47:34 - 47:37
    Salvation has come.
  • 47:37 - 47:39
The One Who has been long awaited.
  • 47:39 - 47:42
    All human history is
    pointing to this child.
  • 47:42 - 47:44
    And He's come.
  • 47:44 - 47:47
    And nobody knows it!
  • 47:47 - 47:49
The shepherds wouldn't have known it.
  • 47:49 - 47:51
    No fanfare.
  • 47:51 - 47:53
    Miracle of the greatest magnitude
  • 47:53 - 47:54
    is taking place.
  • 47:54 - 47:57
God and man joined together in this child.
  • 47:57 - 47:59
    The most unique Person ever.
  • 47:59 - 48:00
I wanted to sing that song:
  • 48:00 - 48:03
    "Hail! The Incarnate Deity!"
  • 48:03 - 48:06
But who's there to hail Him?
  • 48:06 - 48:09
    It's just quiet.
  • 48:09 - 48:10
    Everybody in the inn -
  • 48:10 - 48:14
taxes and everything filling their minds.
  • 48:14 - 48:16
    Who's there to hail Him?
  • 48:16 - 48:18
    I'll tell you who.
  • 48:18 - 48:24
    Some lowly shepherds.
  • 48:24 - 48:28
And then days, may have even been weeks,
  • 48:28 - 48:31
    just some time before Joseph
  • 48:31 - 48:38
    fled to Egypt with his family;
  • 48:38 - 48:39
    it was before Herod sent
  • 48:39 - 48:41
and had all those children killed
  • 48:41 - 48:45
    in Bethlehem.
  • 48:45 - 48:47
    Some foreigners.
  • 48:47 - 48:51
    You see how God works?
  • 48:51 - 48:54
    It wasn't the Jewish elite.
  • 48:54 - 48:56
Brethren, think of all the people
  • 48:56 - 49:01
    of power and money
  • 49:01 - 49:04
and high rank in this world
  • 49:04 - 49:08
    that God has passed over
  • 49:08 - 49:12
    that you might know
  • 49:12 - 49:16
the significance of all these things.
  • 49:16 - 49:20
He's given you eyes to see.
  • 49:20 - 49:22
Why didn't everybody else follow the star?
  • 49:22 - 49:23
    Maybe they couldn't see it.
  • 49:23 - 49:25
Maybe they did; they just didn't know
  • 49:25 - 49:28
    the significance of it.
  • 49:28 - 49:29
    But you know what?
  • 49:29 - 49:32
    That star guided the Magi.
  • 49:32 - 49:33
    It led them.
  • 49:33 - 49:36
No indication it led anybody else.
  • 49:36 - 49:38
    God's electing love.
  • 49:38 - 49:43
He just draws these people to His Son.
  • 49:43 - 49:49
    The world like some great, flowing river;
  • 49:49 - 49:51
    the course of this world.
  • 49:51 - 49:53
    That's what we were -
  • 49:53 - 49:55
following the course of this world.
  • 49:55 - 49:57
    Following the prince of
    the power of the air.
  • 49:57 - 50:01
By and large, that's what this season is.
  • 50:01 - 50:03
It's just a mass of humanity
  • 50:03 - 50:04
    in this river;
  • 50:04 - 50:06
    it's just being swept along.
  • 50:06 - 50:12
    Everybody's just flowing with it.
  • 50:12 - 50:16
Unaware of what really is significant.
  • 50:16 - 50:20
Just like they were 2,000 years ago.
  • 50:20 - 50:22
    Football games and Christmas trees
  • 50:22 - 50:25
and lights and all of it.
  • 50:25 - 50:26
    I'll tell you this:
  • 50:26 - 50:28
There really was a star shining
  • 50:28 - 50:31
back in the sky in that day.
  • 50:31 - 50:36
It was a guide at that time to Christ.
  • 50:36 - 50:38
    Today, we have the star.
  • 50:38 - 50:38
    We have the light.
  • 50:38 - 50:40
    It's the Gospel light.
  • 50:40 - 50:42
    It beckons men.
  • 50:42 - 50:44
    But isn't it interesting,
  • 50:44 - 50:48
it's so much like it was then.
  • 50:48 - 50:51
You get these people far off.
  • 50:51 - 50:57
That's how they're described in Ephesians.
  • 50:57 - 51:01
    Those who are far off.
  • 51:01 - 51:05
    We come near.
  • 51:05 - 51:11
    We draw near.
  • 51:11 - 51:13
    Those who are far off
    have been brought near
  • 51:13 - 51:17
    by the blood of Christ.
  • 51:17 - 51:20
    Same thing.
  • 51:20 - 51:21
    Isn't it amazing?
  • 51:21 - 51:26
God gives some people eyes to see.
  • 51:26 - 51:28
    There's some in here.
  • 51:28 - 51:31
You just go out the doors.
  • 51:31 - 51:34
    You'll just be swept away.
  • 51:34 - 51:38
Just swept away with all of it.
  • 51:38 - 51:42
You really don't have eyes to see.
  • 51:42 - 51:43
But if you have eyes to see,
  • 51:43 - 51:44
if you have ears to hear -
  • 51:44 - 51:46
    even if God is just
    giving them to you
  • 51:46 - 51:47
    right now,
  • 51:47 - 51:49
    you need to recognize this:
  • 51:49 - 51:50
    These are all facts.
  • 51:50 - 51:51
    This is history.
  • 51:51 - 51:54
God the Son broke into time
  • 51:54 - 51:56
    2,000 years ago,
  • 51:56 - 51:58
and what He did was He came
  • 51:58 - 52:00
and He did not stay a baby.
  • 52:00 - 52:01
    He grew up.
  • 52:01 - 52:03
    And when He grew up,
  • 52:03 - 52:05
there was a day the Spirit of God
  • 52:05 - 52:06
    descended on Him.
  • 52:06 - 52:08
He was baptized in those waters of Jordan.
  • 52:08 - 52:10
    That Spirit came, filled Him.
  • 52:10 - 52:12
There was a voice from Heaven,
  • 52:12 - 52:14
    from the Majesty on High:
  • 52:14 - 52:16
    "This is My beloved Son."
  • 52:16 - 52:18
And He went forth, and He faced the devil.
  • 52:18 - 52:19
    And He conquered.
  • 52:19 - 52:21
    And He went forth.
  • 52:21 - 52:22
    And He did miracles.
  • 52:22 - 52:23
    And He showed the people
  • 52:23 - 52:25
    He could raise the dead.
  • 52:25 - 52:26
    He showed the people
  • 52:26 - 52:28
    He could heal our diseases.
  • 52:28 - 52:29
    And He showed people
  • 52:29 - 52:31
He was minded to do it.
  • 52:31 - 52:34
"If You will, You can make me clean."
  • 52:34 - 52:35
    And He said, "I will."
  • 52:35 - 52:37
And if you have eyes to see
  • 52:37 - 52:39
    and ears to hear,
  • 52:39 - 52:40
    we've been given a Messiah
  • 52:40 - 52:43
Who is willing that we should be saved.
  • 52:43 - 52:45
    And reaches out His hand
  • 52:45 - 52:46
    and beckons sinners,
  • 52:46 - 52:48
"Come unto Me, all you that labor
  • 52:48 - 52:49
    and are heavy laden."
  • 52:49 - 52:51
    This is historical fact.
  • 52:51 - 52:52
    This is not fiction.
  • 52:52 - 52:54
And I'll guarantee, it lines up perfectly
  • 52:54 - 52:57
with the historical fact of your sin
  • 52:57 - 52:58
    and your guilt
  • 52:58 - 53:00
and the reality that you and I know
  • 53:00 - 53:03
    you must die.
  • 53:03 - 53:05
And He came to suffer in our place.
  • 53:05 - 53:06
And He came to taste death
  • 53:06 - 53:08
    on behalf of all men.
  • 53:08 - 53:09
    That's what Scripture says.
  • 53:09 - 53:11
    This is real.
  • 53:11 - 53:12
This is not like the Grinch.
  • 53:12 - 53:14
This is not like Santa Claus.
  • 53:14 - 53:15
This is not all this garbage.
  • 53:15 - 53:18
    This isn't some stable
  • 53:18 - 53:22
with a placarded star on the front of it.
  • 53:22 - 53:23
    We're talking about reality.
  • 53:23 - 53:25
We're talking about a star in the sky
  • 53:25 - 53:29
that actually led men to the Christ.
  • 53:29 - 53:30
    And they fell down
  • 53:30 - 53:32
    and they worshiped Him.
  • 53:32 - 53:34
And that's what He calls us to do.
  • 53:34 - 53:36
    Come unto Me.
  • 53:36 - 53:39
    And bow down to Him.
  • 53:39 - 53:40
    That's what they did.
  • 53:40 - 53:42
    Oh, those Magi, in glory
  • 53:42 - 53:43
when so many of the Jews -
  • 53:43 - 53:44
    and Jesus said it -
  • 53:44 - 53:46
so many are going to come
  • 53:46 - 53:47
    from East - they came from the East;
  • 53:47 - 53:48
    and from the West.
  • 53:48 - 53:50
And they're going to sit down
  • 53:50 - 53:51
    with Abraham and with Isaac
  • 53:51 - 53:52
    and with Jacob
  • 53:52 - 53:53
    in the Kingdom.
  • 53:53 - 53:54
    But so many,
  • 53:54 - 53:56
    so many that were privileged,
  • 53:56 - 53:58
and so many that had rank,
  • 53:58 - 54:00
and so many that had light,
  • 54:00 - 54:05
and so many are not going to be there.
  • 54:05 - 54:07
    And they just assume.
  • 54:07 - 54:09
    They just assume.
  • 54:09 - 54:11
But in faith, if we go to Christ,
  • 54:11 - 54:13
and we fall down before Him
  • 54:13 - 54:14
    and we worship -
  • 54:14 - 54:17
oh, those Magi, there was great joy.
  • 54:17 - 54:19
    If you're a sinner
  • 54:19 - 54:21
and you come to recognize that a Savior
  • 54:21 - 54:23
has been sent Who became sin for us
  • 54:23 - 54:26
    that we might become the
    righteousness of God in Him;
  • 54:26 - 54:28
    He came and He conquered
  • 54:28 - 54:29
    and He faced death,
  • 54:29 - 54:33
and He faced the consequences of sin
  • 54:33 - 54:34
    on that cross.
  • 54:34 - 54:36
He faced the wrath of God.
  • 54:36 - 54:38
    He faced a broken law.
  • 54:38 - 54:41
And He conquered that we might be set free
  • 54:41 - 54:43
and that we might have life.
  • 54:43 - 54:45
Oh, they jumped with exceeding joy.
  • 54:45 - 54:46
    I'll tell you this,
  • 54:46 - 54:49
if you actually look at that star
  • 54:49 - 54:50
on top of a Christmas tree,
  • 54:50 - 54:54
or taped onto the manger scene,
  • 54:54 - 54:56
    and you really recognize
  • 54:56 - 54:59
at least the significance of the reality
  • 54:59 - 55:00
    behind that,
  • 55:00 - 55:03
you would jump out of your shoes.
  • 55:03 - 55:05
    When they saw that star
  • 55:05 - 55:07
and it was leading them to Bethlehem -
  • 55:07 - 55:08
    see, they'd heard
  • 55:08 - 55:11
    the prophecies were being fulfilled.
  • 55:11 - 55:14
A virgin (Isaiah 7) coming to pass.
  • 55:14 - 55:17
Micah 5: One who is from old,
  • 55:17 - 55:18
    even from everlasting;
  • 55:18 - 55:20
He is going to be born
  • 55:20 - 55:24
    in Bethlehem Ephrathah.
  • 55:24 - 55:25
These things are coming to pass.
  • 55:25 - 55:28
    They're exceedingly joyful.
  • 55:28 - 55:31
    Can you imagine?
  • 55:31 - 55:33
    The Christ.
  • 55:33 - 55:36
And though we cannot see Him
  • 55:36 - 55:38
    as they could see Him
    with the physical eye,
  • 55:38 - 55:40
yet we can hear His words.
  • 55:40 - 55:42
    And they beckon to us.
  • 55:42 - 55:44
They call us like the star of old
  • 55:44 - 55:45
    called those men.
  • 55:45 - 55:48
    Come. Come.
  • 55:48 - 55:50
    That star just guided -
  • 55:50 - 55:52
    come, come.
  • 55:52 - 55:54
And who had eyes to see?
  • 55:54 - 55:57
    None but the Magi.
  • 55:57 - 55:58
    But they came.
  • 55:58 - 56:00
    It didn't matter that
    they were foreigners.
  • 56:00 - 56:01
    They came.
  • 56:01 - 56:03
    You say, weren't they magicians?
  • 56:03 - 56:04
    Isn't that a cult?
  • 56:04 - 56:06
Whatever you want to make of it -
  • 56:06 - 56:08
    they came!
  • 56:08 - 56:09
    Come!
  • 56:09 - 56:12
    And you will find Him
  • 56:12 - 56:16
    the Savior to the uttermost.
  • 56:16 - 56:19
    A star.
  • 56:19 - 56:21
    If you really recognize,
  • 56:21 - 56:23
    it's just a star.
  • 56:23 - 56:28
No, it's a star that just proclaims
  • 56:28 - 56:34
thunderously: Man need not be damned
  • 56:34 - 56:39
    any longer for his sins.
  • 56:39 - 56:44
    That is good news.
  • 56:44 - 56:46
You don't want to lose that truth
  • 56:46 - 56:49
in this season or any other season.
  • 56:49 - 56:50
    So much deception,
  • 56:50 - 56:54
    but that is not deception.
  • 56:54 - 56:58
That is the truth. That is the fact.
  • 56:58 - 57:01
And it is a fact that this same baby,
  • 57:01 - 57:02
    when He grew up,
  • 57:02 - 57:05
    He went to the cross.
  • 57:05 - 57:07
    That's a fact.
  • 57:07 - 57:09
    He died on that cross.
  • 57:09 - 57:10
    It's a fact.
  • 57:10 - 57:12
    You may say it's incredible.
  • 57:12 - 57:14
    It's unbelievable.
  • 57:14 - 57:17
    How can it happen
  • 57:17 - 57:18
that He'd die and three days later,
  • 57:18 - 57:21
    He'd raise from the dead?
  • 57:21 - 57:23
    I'll tell you this:
  • 57:23 - 57:24
    It is supernatural.
  • 57:24 - 57:26
    It is amazing.
  • 57:26 - 57:27
    It is miraculous.
  • 57:27 - 57:29
If He didn't come out of that grave,
  • 57:29 - 57:31
we are yet in our sins.
  • 57:31 - 57:32
He did come out of the grave.
  • 57:32 - 57:35
And you don't want to stick
  • 57:35 - 57:39
as Christmas perpetually brings us back
  • 57:39 - 57:40
    to the manger;
  • 57:40 - 57:42
    brings us back to the Incarnation;
  • 57:42 - 57:44
it brings us back to the baby.
  • 57:44 - 57:46
    I'll tell you this:
  • 57:46 - 57:48
one of the deceptions in this world
  • 57:48 - 57:49
    is Christ as an infant,
  • 57:49 - 57:51
and they love to perpetually keep Him
  • 57:51 - 57:54
    as a harmless, little infant.
  • 57:54 - 57:56
    But He is not that.
  • 57:56 - 57:58
You need to see the rest of the story.
  • 57:58 - 58:00
Because when He came out of that grave,
  • 58:00 - 58:02
    He didn't linger around
    here for too long.
  • 58:02 - 58:03
    Forty days.
  • 58:03 - 58:05
Enough time to let it be known
  • 58:05 - 58:06
to His followers that He actually
  • 58:06 - 58:07
    was risen from the dead.
  • 58:07 - 58:09
And they needed to know that
  • 58:09 - 58:11
    because they were going
    to be His mouthpieces.
  • 58:11 - 58:12
They were going to be His witnesses.
  • 58:12 - 58:14
They were going to go forth
    and tell what happened.
  • 58:14 - 58:15
    And after forty days,
  • 58:15 - 58:18
He went up and He sits crowned.
  • 58:18 - 58:19
    And He is King.
  • 58:19 - 58:23
And He is going to judge all of mankind.
  • 58:23 - 58:25
    We must all stand before
  • 58:25 - 58:26
    the judgment seat of Christ.
  • 58:26 - 58:29
    The day is at hand.
  • 58:29 - 58:32
Do not think of Him as
    a little baby anymore.
  • 58:32 - 58:33
    He is not.
  • 58:33 - 58:34
    Little babies are harmless.
  • 58:34 - 58:36
This is not One Who is harmless.
  • 58:36 - 58:38
    This is the God-man.
  • 58:38 - 58:39
    He is crowned.
  • 58:39 - 58:41
    He is enthroned.
  • 58:41 - 58:42
    He is Lord of Lords.
  • 58:42 - 58:44
And you must answer to Him.
  • 58:44 - 58:46
    Right now, He beckons you
  • 58:46 - 58:47
    to come to Him
  • 58:47 - 58:48
and He'll save you if you do.
  • 58:48 - 58:50
And He is no lightweight Savior.
  • 58:50 - 58:52
He is powerful to the uttermost.
  • 58:52 - 58:55
    He is strong to save.
  • 58:55 - 58:56
    But I'll tell you this,
  • 58:56 - 58:57
if you ignore Him and will not
  • 58:57 - 58:59
fall down and worship Him like the Magi,
  • 58:59 - 59:01
    He is strong to condemn.
  • 59:01 - 59:02
And He is strong to judge.
  • 59:02 - 59:05
    And He will.
  • 59:05 - 59:08
    He will.
  • 59:08 - 59:12
    He is coming.
  • 59:12 - 59:16
    He is coming.
  • 59:16 - 59:19
    Father,
  • 59:19 - 59:22
    even so,
  • 59:22 - 59:30
    Lord Jesus, come.
  • 59:30 - 59:32
    Amen.
