Slimmers haven't a clue about the slim | Marina Maggi | TEDxKirovka
-
0:09 - 0:10Good evening, Chelyabinsk.
-
0:10 - 0:12My name is Marina Maggi.
-
0:12 - 0:14Today my topic is:
-
0:14 - 0:17Slimmers haven't a clue about the slim.
-
0:18 - 0:22I have dedicated
the greater part of my life -
0:22 - 0:24to recovery from acute food addiction.
-
0:24 - 0:26In February 2013,
my weight was already 92 kg. -
0:26 - 0:28Three years ago,
I looked something like this. -
0:29 - 0:31Not the easiest time in my life.
-
0:31 - 0:34I began each day promising myself
-
0:34 - 0:37that today would be
the day I changed my life. -
0:37 - 0:41But by lunchtime, the person who'd made
that promise that morning had vanished. -
0:41 - 0:43By supper no trace
of determination remained. -
0:43 - 0:45I sank into failure,
-
0:45 - 0:47punished myself with a sense of guilt,
-
0:47 - 0:49conclusions about myself ...
-
0:49 - 0:51This went on for
about 10 years of my life ... -
0:51 - 0:53every day.
-
0:53 - 0:54Can you imagine?
-
0:55 - 0:59I thought, "What's wrong with me?
Why isn't it working?" -
1:00 - 1:02There really was
something wrong with me. -
1:03 - 1:05The fact was that all this time
I was a "slimmer", -
1:06 - 1:07an absolutely typical slimmer
-
1:07 - 1:12with an absolutely typical slimmer's type
of thinking and level of consciousness. -
1:12 - 1:15Even when I succeeded
in losing weight through my efforts, -
1:15 - 1:17I always just remained a "slimmer".
-
1:17 - 1:19Today my topic is called:
-
1:19 - 1:22"Slimmers haven't a clue about the slim."
-
1:22 - 1:23And I would like to add:
-
1:23 - 1:25"... that's why you didn't lose weight."
-
1:26 - 1:28So, let's get started.
-
1:28 - 1:31With a career of more than
16 years as a coach, -
1:31 - 1:33the last four years
working closely with slimmers, -
1:33 - 1:36I find a very strong similarity
among them. -
1:36 - 1:38And, where there's similarity,
systemacity is to be found. -
1:38 - 1:43I divide slimmers into three categories,
depending on the level of excess weight. -
1:43 - 1:47The first: the indulgent.
They're 3-5 kg overweight. -
1:47 - 1:51The second: the suffering.
They're 10-15 kg and above overweight. -
1:51 - 1:54The third: sectarians.
They are not overweight at all. -
1:54 - 1:56Before I continue, I want to say,
-
1:56 - 1:59that all coincidences with actual people
are pure coincidence. -
1:59 - 2:04To be clear, I do not mean it about you
if you don't think it applies to you. -
2:04 - 2:06So, "the indulgent".
-
2:06 - 2:10The indulgent, these are girls
with excess weight of 3-5 kg. -
2:10 - 2:13Let's just say they have
no serious weight problem, -
2:13 - 2:17but they already sense
uncomfortable changes at the microlevel. -
2:17 - 2:20Jeans don't sit properly in places,
the swimsuit doesn't do up. -
2:20 - 2:24At the microlevel, they're already uneasy,
but are not yet doing anything about it. -
2:25 - 2:28They are not ready to take real action.
-
2:28 - 2:31The indulgent like to talk a lot
about losing weight, -
2:31 - 2:35love to put it into heads all around
that they need to lose weight. -
2:37 - 2:38Sounds familiar?
-
2:39 - 2:42I think men will understand me now,
-
2:42 - 2:45if they have "indulgent" women.
-
2:45 - 2:46Some are frankly given to hysterics,
-
2:47 - 2:49others behave more delicately,
-
2:49 - 2:52tearfully grimacing,
portraying painful emotion. -
2:52 - 2:56In a word, those who whine a lot,
and, ultimately, do nothing. -
2:57 - 2:59I'll tell you about the games they play
-
2:59 - 3:04by which they manipulate us
and deceive themselves. -
3:05 - 3:09The indulgent do not feel pain
from the excess weight itself. -
3:09 - 3:12They feel guilty
because they see the problem -
3:12 - 3:14and do not do anything about it.
-
3:14 - 3:16In order to somehow justify themselves,
-
3:16 - 3:20they, at first, go on about it a lot,
because it gives them a sense of action, -
3:20 - 3:22or an illusion of action
towards a solution. -
3:22 - 3:26We often do this regardless of whether
there's a weight problem or not. -
3:26 - 3:30And the second: those who indulge
and take on the role of a martyr, -
3:30 - 3:32they seem to suffer.
-
3:32 - 3:34Why do they suffer?
-
3:34 - 3:37Because martyrs in our society
are always justified, always good. -
3:37 - 3:40With us, this is even found
on a legislative level. -
3:40 - 3:44Repentance as a mitigating circumstance
in determining guilt. -
3:44 - 3:48I just happen to have a legal education,
at least it came in handy somewhere. -
3:48 - 3:50So, the indulgent.
-
3:50 - 3:53On the one hand,
they submittingly admit they do, -
3:53 - 3:54on the other, they're OK.
-
3:54 - 3:57They assuage themselves
with: "It's no problem, -
3:57 - 3:59one can continue to indulge
and not lose weight." -
3:59 - 4:02This is a visceral,
manipulative game they play. -
4:02 - 4:05With this, they really irritate us,
because we all have to listen to it. -
4:06 - 4:08The suffering are the second category.
-
4:08 - 4:11The suffering are of the indulgent.
-
4:12 - 4:14The principal difference from the first
-
4:14 - 4:18is that it is a full blown problem
with inescapable extra kilos. -
4:18 - 4:22The suffering are girls
who will no longer be whining. -
4:22 - 4:26They will not say that they have
put on weight and need to lose weight, -
4:26 - 4:29because they know
that it will result in the response -
4:29 - 4:33"Yes, you need to lose weight,"
or silence confirming their own view. -
4:33 - 4:37They already, most likely, have problems
with self-esteem and confidence, -
4:37 - 4:38they do not like to go shopping.
-
4:38 - 4:42Most likely, one of them has already
lost a guy citing outright the problem. -
4:43 - 4:45They do not like to be photographed.
-
4:48 - 4:53The suffering experience pain
directly from the excess weight. -
4:53 - 4:57If the pain of the indulgent
is a sense of guilt from inaction, -
4:57 - 5:01then the pain of the suffering
is in the excess weight itself. -
5:01 - 5:04The suffering also fall
into this category of slimmers. -
5:05 - 5:06The third category.
-
5:06 - 5:10The indulgent or the suffering
may well become familiar with effort, -
5:10 - 5:14and with the help of effort
they manage to lose those extra kilos. -
5:14 - 5:15They become slimmer,
-
5:15 - 5:19but go on to the next category:
sectarian slimmers. -
5:19 - 5:22Sectarian slimmers are slim people.
-
5:22 - 5:24Physiologically they have
no weight problem. -
5:24 - 5:27The problem is that they still
continue with their efforts. -
5:28 - 5:30They continue their efforts,
they're fixed on them. -
5:30 - 5:34They're fixed on food, what they eat:
when, at what time and how much? -
5:34 - 5:38They're fixed on diet, nutrient values,
diet compatibility, exercise: -
5:38 - 5:41when, at what time,
before or after exercise? -
5:41 - 5:44They are not well balanced,
they are pendulums. -
5:45 - 5:47They tend to periodically put on weight
-
5:47 - 5:50in order to feel alive
and then start to lose weight again. -
5:51 - 5:53Sectarians: why do I call them sectarians?
-
5:54 - 5:58Because sectarians tend to create
a religion around their body. -
5:58 - 6:01They are people who believe in effort,
-
6:01 - 6:05who believe that the body
is to be subjected to just such hard work. -
6:05 - 6:09This work is superhuman expenditure
yielding a result. -
6:09 - 6:11Faith unites them in their effort.
-
6:11 - 6:13I study physiology,
-
6:13 - 6:16the theory of functional systems
of Pyotr Kuzmich Anokhin. -
6:16 - 6:18And I want to talk about
effort and willpower. -
6:18 - 6:20There are two concepts:
willpower and effort. -
6:20 - 6:24Two different concepts, though
many put an equals sign between them. -
6:24 - 6:25[Willpower ≠ effort]
-
6:25 - 6:29Effort is not physiological, and today
I'll tell you what it's fraught with. -
6:29 - 6:32Exercising on the energy of willpower
is not dangerous in itself. -
6:32 - 6:34First, you know
that you have the willpower -
6:35 - 6:37as well as strength in your biceps.
-
6:37 - 6:40You know that without any outward display.
-
6:40 - 6:42You can apply willpower
towards a possibility -
6:42 - 6:45since one might say
-
6:45 - 6:49that given the availability,
there is some potential. -
6:49 - 6:51When movement is willpower driven,
-
6:51 - 6:54you do not need recovery, deep rest.
-
6:54 - 6:57Willpower does not create
a fear of future steps, -
6:57 - 6:59of future accomplishments.
-
6:59 - 7:00Effort is the opposite.
-
7:00 - 7:05Effort: the etymology of the word
implies a doubling of force, put simply. -
7:05 - 7:08You apply twice the force,
you overstrain yourself. -
7:08 - 7:12Half of that force is spent
suppressing internal resistance -
7:12 - 7:15which is all out of line
with your natural physiology. -
7:15 - 7:16Only with the other half
-
7:16 - 7:19do you seem to be progressing
towards a possibility. -
7:19 - 7:22All physiology is based on
the principles of balance. -
7:22 - 7:26If your system deviates from the norm,
your system wants to restabilize itself: -
7:26 - 7:31to stabilize itself by balancing out
deviations to the degree necessary. -
7:32 - 7:35In other words, for the deviations
resulting from your effort - -
7:35 - 7:36and you deviate
-
7:37 - 7:41because there is a discharge
of energy and a recoil from it - -
7:41 - 7:44your system provides a balance,
to wit a positive feeling. -
7:44 - 7:47So when you put effort into your body,
-
7:47 - 7:49you expect a reward.
-
7:49 - 7:51You add to what you demand of your body,
-
7:52 - 7:56but the body is physiological
and can give you nothing but the norm, -
7:56 - 7:59because the body or organism
is like the Sun or the weather, -
7:59 - 8:01it is impossible to meet this demand,
-
8:01 - 8:04it does not play with us
in these demand games. -
8:04 - 8:05But we know how to get round this.
-
8:05 - 8:08We need recompensation
in some way for our efforts. -
8:08 - 8:13And what recompensation
provides a positive feeling for us? -
8:13 - 8:16It's hearing flattery
and compliments about our bodies. -
8:16 - 8:21Vanity was not simply acknowledged
as one of the most basic mortal sins: -
8:22 - 8:24its test is passed by few.
-
8:26 - 8:29Sectarians are people
who believe in effort, -
8:29 - 8:33and in order to balance
deviation with positive feeling -
8:33 - 8:35they need to hear the voice of believers.
-
8:35 - 8:37Their bodies are a totem,
-
8:37 - 8:39a temple of worship, an altar of worship.
-
8:40 - 8:43The indulgent and the suffering,
their believers come every day -
8:43 - 8:44to the temple of Instagram
-
8:44 - 8:46and put candles in the form of "likes".
-
8:47 - 8:50The sectarians themselves are deeply
rooted in faith in their own bodies, -
8:50 - 8:52consider themselves to be special.
-
8:52 - 8:54Believe me, I know trainers,
-
8:54 - 8:57who see that they are really worshipped.
-
8:57 - 8:58That's not religion?
-
8:58 - 9:01But all would be nothing,
but for another law of physiology -
9:01 - 9:03about adaptation
to an already existing deviation, -
9:04 - 9:06about adaptation to external stimulus,
-
9:06 - 9:10according to which any deviation
later becomes normal. -
9:10 - 9:13The system adapts and ceases
to respond to the stimulus. -
9:14 - 9:15What does this mean for us:
-
9:15 - 9:19it means that, in order for the system
to react again to the next stimulus, -
9:19 - 9:22be aroused by the following stimulus,
-
9:22 - 9:26the dose must be constantly raised,
or sectarians cease to feel worship. -
9:26 - 9:30This means that they need
the voices of new believers. -
9:30 - 9:33And the indulgent and the suffering,
-
9:33 - 9:37they also restabilize with respect to
the perception of the external stimulus, -
9:37 - 9:40and they will put a new candle
in the form of a "like" just in case, -
9:40 - 9:43if a new sectarian action
-
9:43 - 9:46demonstrates a skill
beyond the previous one. -
9:46 - 9:51We drive ourselves into a system in which
we constantly amplify deviations, -
9:51 - 9:53deviating even more from the norm.
-
9:54 - 9:56So, we have three categories:
-
9:57 - 9:59the indulgent,
-
9:59 - 10:00the suffering
-
10:00 - 10:01and the sectarians.
-
10:02 - 10:05So, I've now told you about
all three categories of slimmers. -
10:05 - 10:07Why are sectarians treated as slimmers?
-
10:07 - 10:10Because despite the fact
that it seems that physiologically -
10:10 - 10:12they do not have a weight problem,
-
10:12 - 10:15they nevertheless,
in their mindset, remain slimmers. -
10:16 - 10:19They eat much the same way ...
-
10:19 - 10:25In the picture, coaches who do not know
how to impress their believing followers. -
10:25 - 10:27Here there is already overamplification.
-
10:27 - 10:30Sectarians use ideas in the same way.
-
10:30 - 10:31They preach effort,
-
10:31 - 10:35monitor, forbid,
place great expectations on bodies, -
10:35 - 10:37manipulate the rate of weight loss.
-
10:37 - 10:39They often have breakdowns in their lives,
-
10:39 - 10:43after which they have a sense of reversal,
guilt, punish themselves, -
10:43 - 10:45draw conclusions about themselves.
-
10:45 - 10:47The picture is identical:
in terms of their mentality, -
10:47 - 10:50they are no different from
the indulgent and the suffering. -
10:51 - 10:53Only, the sectarians
have two further problems: -
10:53 - 10:55fear of loss of results
-
10:55 - 10:58and fear of loss of surrogate pleasure
from derived gains of vanity. -
10:58 - 11:01Observing the practice of slimmers
for very many years, -
11:01 - 11:03being myself of the category,
-
11:04 - 11:05I noticed,
-
11:06 - 11:09slimmers forget how to be slim.
-
11:10 - 11:13And they begin to act out
the image of the slender, -
11:13 - 11:16follow their models,
create models, the image of the slim. -
11:16 - 11:18Whom do they see before them?
-
11:18 - 11:20An image of the sectarian slimmer
-
11:20 - 11:22with overplayed ideas
on healthy living and nutrition. -
11:22 - 11:25Right, after all, someone who creates
a religion around her body -
11:26 - 11:27is always going to be rather imperious.
-
11:27 - 11:31They need new followers, new believers,
new candles in the form of "likes". -
11:31 - 11:34They take banners, go outside,
-
11:34 - 11:36and try to convert
everyone to their faith. -
11:37 - 11:38And they are good at it.
-
11:38 - 11:41Slimmers do react to these signals.
-
11:42 - 11:46But, I remind you, I consider all three
categories to be those of slimmers. -
11:46 - 11:49And who are such
"healthy, slender people"? -
11:49 - 11:53The fundamental difference between
a healthy, slender person and a slimmer -
11:53 - 11:56is that healthy, slender people
do not lose weight. -
11:56 - 11:59First, they don't lose weight
in their minds, -
11:59 - 12:01don't lose weight in their thoughts.
-
12:01 - 12:02So they succeed.
-
12:02 - 12:05And if you get close to
a healthy, slim person, -
12:05 - 12:07do you know what you find?
-
12:07 - 12:09Nothing.
-
12:10 - 12:12You will discover nothing.
-
12:13 - 12:14They do not think about food,
-
12:14 - 12:17do not think more about eating
than about using the toilet, -
12:17 - 12:19don't make a religion of their bodies,
-
12:19 - 12:22photos of figures stripped for gym
from all angles are also unlikely. -
12:22 - 12:24Addressed with hot compliments,
-
12:24 - 12:27such people will most likely
react with embarrassment, -
12:27 - 12:31genuinely not understanding why there's
such excitement about their body. -
12:31 - 12:32And it's all just so.
-
12:32 - 12:36The excitement forms in the minds of those
for whom to have such a body -
12:36 - 12:40means work, effort,
unearthly power of abstinence. -
12:41 - 12:43Slimmers, becoming thinner through effort,
-
12:43 - 12:46crave for compensation
for the lost calorie input. -
12:46 - 12:50These people write books about
the difficult path of the Samurai -
12:50 - 12:55and film documentaries about themselves
craving reward for their effort. -
12:55 - 12:58For a healthy, slim person, such a body
-
12:58 - 13:00is completely natural,
something given at birth. -
13:01 - 13:06They do not do anything special
to maintain their bodies. -
13:06 - 13:10Healthy, slender people
will not impose aggressive motivation -
13:10 - 13:11with posters about slimming,
-
13:11 - 13:13because there is no gain from vanity.
-
13:13 - 13:16They don't get carried away with effort.
-
13:17 - 13:20Healthy, slender people
won't call you a fat-ass -
13:20 - 13:24because they are not
angry about fat people. -
13:24 - 13:26Fat people don't annoy them.
-
13:26 - 13:28They've no cause for anger with them.
-
13:28 - 13:31Anger dwells in those
whose lives centre on effort. -
13:31 - 13:32It is their own so special game.
-
13:32 - 13:34The more they hate fat
and the fuller body, -
13:34 - 13:38the easier it is for them not to give in
and go that way themselves. -
13:38 - 13:41Healthy, slender people are,
for the most part, calm, -
13:41 - 13:45at least not irritated by fat people.
-
13:45 - 13:47There is one problem
with healthy, slender people. -
13:48 - 13:52They do not pay
any attention to themselves. -
13:53 - 13:56They, for the most part,
have no special characteristics. -
13:57 - 13:59And I am here today,
my talk devoted to this fact, -
14:00 - 14:03to shift your focus of attention
from those who go with banners -
14:04 - 14:07to those who most often remain unnoticed.
-
14:07 - 14:10Because you should orientate
yourselves towards them, -
14:11 - 14:13no matter how strange it may sound.
-
14:13 - 14:17Do not expect healthy, slender people
to sound off about their inconspicuity. -
14:17 - 14:19It would be very strange.
Nothing you'll hear. -
14:19 - 14:22Healthy, slender people are inconspicuous.
-
14:22 - 14:24And your task, your job,
-
14:24 - 14:29is to pay attention to such people
if you are worried about excess weight. -
14:29 - 14:32Pay attention to them
and start watching them. -
14:33 - 14:35Who are they? How do they live?
-
14:35 - 14:38What do they think about?
How do they relate to food? -
14:39 - 14:42My sister became such a teacher for me.
-
14:42 - 14:46I lived together with her for 30 years,
and I didn't notice that she was healthy. -
14:46 - 14:48I looked to obsessed coaches
-
14:48 - 14:50who do not let go of motivational slogans,
-
14:51 - 14:53but I realized
who was really my motivation, -
14:53 - 14:55when I realized what result I wanted.
-
14:55 - 14:57I wanted to be just as crazy,
-
14:58 - 15:01or I wanted to be healthy, calm and slim?
-
15:01 - 15:04When I realized this,
I did not tell my sister about it. -
15:04 - 15:06I just started to watch her.
-
15:07 - 15:09And you know, it changed everything.
-
15:09 - 15:12I understood why I had not
lost weight all that time. -
15:13 - 15:16I had generally gone
the entirely wrong way about it. -
15:16 - 15:19You see, slim sectarians,
after losing weight, -
15:19 - 15:21became even more fixed
on the topic of food. -
15:21 - 15:25In their heads, there was
ever more confusion about food. -
15:26 - 15:28With my sister this was not the case.
-
15:29 - 15:30Not at all.
-
15:30 - 15:32She did not think about food.
-
15:33 - 15:35And it really shifted my thinking,
-
15:35 - 15:38because I realized
the direction I had to go in. -
15:38 - 15:40My direction had to be
-
15:40 - 15:45to rid my head of nonsense
in my approach to slimming. -
15:45 - 15:48Above all, no more nonsense.
-
15:48 - 15:50This was the path I took,
-
15:50 - 15:53but, on the other hand,
it also became for me a strong test, -
15:53 - 15:55one of the strongest tests,
-
15:55 - 16:00because I began to not understand
how not to think about the white bear. -
16:00 - 16:03How not to think about food,
when you already think about it? -
16:04 - 16:07It really was a very
difficult task, believe me. -
16:08 - 16:10But it was she who changed my idea,
-
16:10 - 16:12that's why I'm currently
working with slimmers -
16:12 - 16:15and helping them to renormalize
away from food addiction. -
16:16 - 16:20Slimmers cannot imagine
how a healthy, slender person thinks. -
16:20 - 16:24And your task is really to start watching
-
16:24 - 16:29those who for the most part remain
unnoticed, balanced and calm. -
16:29 - 16:31Start to observe the inconspicuous,
-
16:31 - 16:35start watching those
who are even-keeled towards food, -
16:35 - 16:36unworried.
-
16:37 - 16:39I'm now starting to conclude,
-
16:39 - 16:44and in closing I would like to address
each of those categories -
16:44 - 16:46about which I spoke today.
-
16:46 - 16:49Indulgent: stop spoiling yourself.
-
16:49 - 16:52Playing with being overweight
is a very dangerous game, -
16:53 - 16:56and recovery is
a very time-consuming, long process. -
16:56 - 16:59Believe me, I speak as a person
who is still recovering. -
16:59 - 17:01Noticing changes at the microlevel?
-
17:01 - 17:02Take action.
-
17:02 - 17:04Sign up at the gym, cut down portions.
-
17:04 - 17:08Act, don't whine, or you'll inevitably
end up in the sufferer category. -
17:08 - 17:13Sufferers, you can become subject
to the hullabaloo of the sectarians, -
17:13 - 17:16and if you fall in with effort,
then for sure you will end up among them. -
17:17 - 17:19You'll develop ever more
fixed ideas on food, -
17:19 - 17:22and you will become
ever more confused about what to eat. -
17:22 - 17:25You will realize
that this was a false way, -
17:25 - 17:27that you didn't find there
what you sought. -
17:27 - 17:29You are still not
well balanced, not healthy. -
17:29 - 17:33You've not recovered, you've just moved
into another category of illness. -
17:33 - 17:36Think about whether you need
to make this detour? -
17:37 - 17:41After all, at its height, it's the same,
just removed from its normal location. -
17:42 - 17:45Sectarians, forgive me
for such a comparison, -
17:45 - 17:48I know that among you
there are many of my friends. -
17:48 - 17:50I hope they'll not expose
my critical remarks. -
17:50 - 17:52I'm a fitness coach and understand
-
17:52 - 17:56that, in a sense, I spit into the well
from which I myself drink. -
17:56 - 17:59But I just want this well to be cleaner.
-
17:59 - 18:02I just want it to be less turbid.
-
18:02 - 18:05Sectarians, you already
have the main thing - -
18:05 - 18:10a slender body that is beautiful,
that motivates and inspires. -
18:10 - 18:14You are already chosen as a benchmark
for those who indulge and suffer. -
18:14 - 18:16You have power and influence.
-
18:16 - 18:21So become a true example of the health
and integrity of a living cell. -
18:22 - 18:25Healthy and slender people,
my last appeal goes to you. -
18:25 - 18:28Most likely, you do not even know
that you are healthy. -
18:28 - 18:32I personally know many healthy people
who caught the weight loss bug -
18:32 - 18:34because those around them began to slim
-
18:34 - 18:38and they decided that it was not normal
to not think about eating so much. -
18:38 - 18:39I have good news for you.
-
18:39 - 18:41You are perfectly fine.
-
18:41 - 18:42You are healthy.
-
18:42 - 18:44Remain an example to us all,
-
18:44 - 18:45well balanced, calm.
-
18:46 - 18:49We will quietly watch you and learn.
-
18:50 - 18:51Thank you.
-
18:51 - 18:53(Applause)
