2014-10-27 Francophone Educators' Retreat

  • 0:59 - 1:03
    Sister Dao Nghiem,
    are you comfortable?
  • 1:03 - 1:05
    - Very comfortable, Thây.
  • 1:06 - 1:10
    And you, sister Jina?
    - Me too, Thây.
  • 1:10 - 1:12
    Can we start?
  • 1:13 - 1:15
    Very good.
  • 1:15 - 1:18
    Welcome dear friends,
  • 1:20 - 1:23
    welcome dear colleagues
  • 1:26 - 1:35
    welcome to this Francophone retreat
    for teachers and educators.
  • 1:37 - 1:39
Me too, I am a teacher.
  • 1:40 - 1:42
    And I love my job!
  • 1:43 - 1:47
And I know very well that
    you love your job too.
  • 1:48 - 1:52
    You want to form
    young men and women...
  • 1:55 - 1:59
    to be healthy, happy,
    capable of being happy
  • 2:00 - 2:05
    and capable of making
    those around them happy.
  • 2:07 - 2:11
    Our mission is not just
    to transmit knowledge,
  • 2:12 - 2:16
but to form men, to construct
    a worthy, beautiful,
  • 2:19 - 2:20
    human race,
  • 2:20 - 2:25
    in order to take care
    of our precious planet.
  • 2:27 - 2:29
    I am very fortunate
  • 2:30 - 2:34
    because the people
    - especially the young people -
  • 2:34 - 2:38
    who have come here,
    have the same ideal.
  • 2:40 - 2:45
    They want to learn
    in order to transform themselves,
  • 2:46 - 2:51
in order to live happily and
    help others live happily too.
  • 2:52 - 2:57
So every time I walk into
    my classroom, there is happiness.
  • 2:58 - 2:59
    Every time!
  • 3:02 - 3:09
There is some sort of mutual understanding
    between teacher and student.
  • 3:11 - 3:12
    There is also...
  • 3:14 - 3:17
    a sort of brotherhood.
  • 3:25 - 3:32
which makes the work of teaching
    and studying much easier.
  • 3:34 - 3:36
    I always inform myself about...
  • 3:42 - 3:44
    the life of my students.
  • 3:46 - 3:51
    I tell them my difficulties,
my hopes and things like that.
  • 3:52 - 3:57
    So communication
    is always possible.
  • 3:59 - 4:03
    We know that the children,
    the students of today
  • 4:04 - 4:06
have a lot of suffering in them.
  • 4:08 - 4:11
This is because their parents suffer.
  • 4:12 - 4:17
    Their parents cannot
    communicate with each other.
  • 4:20 - 4:25
And it is not easy to communicate
    between parents and child.
  • 4:26 - 4:31
So there is some sort of
    loneliness, a kind of vacuum,
  • 4:32 - 4:35
a kind of emptiness in the child.
  • 4:35 - 4:42
And the child tries to fill up
this emptiness in him with videogames
  • 4:42 - 4:43
    and things like that.
  • 4:43 - 4:45
You know this all too well.
  • 4:46 - 4:51
So there is an enormous amount
    of suffering in young people.
  • 4:53 - 4:59
That makes the work of teaching
    a lot more difficult.
  • 5:02 - 5:06
    And then we ourselves,
    we have difficulties too.
  • 5:08 - 5:10
    We try our very best
  • 5:13 - 5:22
    but the environment, our family
and the colleagues we work with
  • 5:23 - 5:26
have a lot of difficulties in them.
  • 5:27 - 5:28
    So, it is hard.
  • 5:30 - 5:35
    And if teachers, colleagues
    are not happy
  • 5:36 - 5:39
how can we make the children happy?
  • 5:40 - 5:42
    This is a major issue!
  • 5:43 - 5:48
And we do not have enough
    patience, enough understanding,
  • 5:52 - 5:55
    enough freshness and compassion
  • 5:56 - 5:59
to be able to confront all of that.
  • 6:01 - 6:02
    So there is...
  • 6:06 - 6:12
a certain spiritual dimension we need
  • 6:14 - 6:16
    to help us to transform
  • 6:20 - 6:24
and to begin to help people
    around us to transform,
  • 6:25 - 6:30
    beginning with our
    family members and our partner.
  • 6:32 - 6:34
    And then...
  • 6:35 - 6:39
if we succeed in this practice,
  • 6:40 - 6:48
    we become more pleasant,
    more smiling and compassionate.
  • 6:49 - 6:55
So we will be able to help
our colleagues to do the same.
  • 6:57 - 7:01
    And we will bring
    this practice into our class.
  • 7:03 - 7:08
So the first step is to
    come back,
  • 7:10 - 7:12
    to come back to yourself.
  • 7:15 - 7:16
    The way out!
  • 7:17 - 7:19
We are looking for a way out.
  • 7:19 - 7:22
But the way out begins with the way in.
  • 7:28 - 7:31
    Can you draw something,
    brother Pháp Linh?
  • 7:33 - 7:34
    There it is!
  • 7:36 - 7:39
    It is the coming back
    to yourself
  • 7:40 - 7:43
in order to be able to
    take care of yourself,
  • 7:44 - 7:49
in order to be able to handle
    the difficulties you have.
  • 7:51 - 7:53
    And here we have
    the practice methods.
  • 7:56 - 7:59
And we can practice together joyfully.
  • 8:03 - 8:10
    Through mindful breathing, we can
bring our mind back to our body
  • 8:13 - 8:15
and take care of our body first.
  • 8:16 - 8:21
    There is tension,
there is pain in our body.
  • 8:23 - 8:29
    And with this practice
you can come back to your body
  • 8:30 - 8:36
    and recognize the tension and
suffering which is present in the body
  • 8:37 - 8:42
and breathe in such a way
that we can let go of this suffering.
  • 8:46 - 8:50
    And one hour of practice
    can already change a lot.
  • 8:53 - 8:57
An exercise proposed by the Buddha:
  • 9:00 - 9:03
"Breathing in, I am aware of my body."
  • 9:06 - 9:09
I have come back to my body
and my body is a wonder,
  • 9:12 - 9:16
    but it does not have
    enough peace right now.
  • 9:18 - 9:20
And if there is no peace in the body
  • 9:21 - 9:24
    it will be more difficult
to obtain peace in the mind
  • 9:25 - 9:28
Body and mind are always together.
  • 9:28 - 9:31
So we have to begin with the body.
  • 9:31 - 9:37
    In the sitting position, walking
    standing or lying down,
  • 9:38 - 9:41
    we can very well practice
    to relax the body.
  • 9:42 - 9:44
    That is the main thing.
  • 9:46 - 9:49
    Sitting on the bus,
  • 9:52 - 9:56
    or in the car,
    you can do it too.
  • 9:59 - 10:03
    While preparing breakfast,
    you can do it too.
  • 10:06 - 10:09
    While washing the dishes,
    you can do it too.
  • 10:10 - 10:13
So we have a lot of time to do this.
  • 10:13 - 10:17
Relaxing the body is very important.
  • 10:18 - 10:21
    And there are exercises
  • 10:24 - 10:26
    that help us recognize
  • 10:28 - 10:32
    the wonders of life,
    the beauty of nature
  • 10:33 - 10:36
    that are available
    in the present moment.
  • 10:38 - 10:40
    It is easy.
  • 10:42 - 10:44
    When you breathe in
  • 10:45 - 10:52
and if you bring your attention
    completely to your in breath
  • 10:55 - 10:58
then you can already stop all thinking.
  • 11:01 - 11:06
We think a lot, but our thoughts
    are not productive.
  • 11:10 - 11:14
    We get more and more
    confused while thinking.
  • 11:16 - 11:19
    I think, therefore
    I am not really there.
  • 11:21 - 11:24
    I think, therefore
I am lost in my thinking.
  • 11:27 - 11:28
    So...
  • 11:29 - 11:33
    if you bring your attention
    only to your in breath
  • 11:34 - 11:38
    - even if the in breath lasts
only two or three seconds -
  • 11:38 - 11:40
    you stop thinking,
  • 11:41 - 11:47
and you are free from the past,
the future and free from your projects.
  • 11:49 - 11:52
And your in breath can be pleasant.
  • 11:54 - 11:59
For a practitioner an in breath
    can be very pleasant.
  • 12:02 - 12:03
    You are alive.
  • 12:04 - 12:07
You are taking an in breath.
  • 12:07 - 12:08
    It is a miracle!
  • 12:09 - 12:14
He or she who is already dead
    cannot take an in breath.
  • 12:18 - 12:21
    I breathe in,
    therefore I am alive.
  • 12:21 - 12:27
And being alive is a wonder,
the greatest wonder of the world!
  • 12:29 - 12:34
    So it gives you pleasure
when you take an in breath.
  • 12:36 - 12:37
    And...
  • 12:39 - 12:45
when you are taking this in breath
you bring your mind back to your body,
  • 12:47 - 12:49
    because in every day life
  • 12:52 - 12:53
    the body is often there
  • 12:54 - 12:56
    while the mind is elsewhere,
  • 12:58 - 13:04
caught in the past, in the future
in your projects or in your anger.
  • 13:05 - 13:08
So body and mind are not together.
  • 13:10 - 13:16
And when the situation presents itself
like that, you are not really alive.
  • 13:17 - 13:20
The mind has to be with the body
  • 13:21 - 13:26
in order for you to be there
and to live this moment deeply,
  • 13:29 - 13:31
    every moment of your life.
  • 13:35 - 13:43
And when body and mind are together
you are completely alive and present
  • 13:45 - 13:50
    and you will recognize all
the wonders of life that are there:
  • 13:53 - 13:57
the sun, the trees, the birds.
  • 13:59 - 14:03
The Kingdom of God is available
    right here and right now.
  • 14:06 - 14:11
It is the mere and simple recognition
of the beauty of the wonders of life.
  • 14:14 - 14:17
And you can also become aware that
  • 14:17 - 14:19
    you are very fortunate,
  • 14:20 - 14:21
    more than others.
  • 14:23 - 14:28
You have the chance to live
happily in the here and now.
  • 14:31 - 14:35
If you have the time you can...
  • 14:40 - 14:47
write down on a piece of paper, all
    the conditions of happiness that
  • 14:49 - 14:52
you already have and not have
to look for in the future.
  • 14:54 - 14:57
I can assure you: one page
    will not be enough.
  • 14:57 - 14:59
Two pages will not be enough.
  • 14:59 - 15:01
    Nor three or four pages!
  • 15:02 - 15:07
You are so fortunate. You have
    so many conditions of happiness.
  • 15:08 - 15:11
And happiness is possible here and now.
  • 15:11 - 15:14
And that is the teaching of the Buddha.
  • 15:16 - 15:19
The French have a song about this:
  • 15:19 - 15:21
"What are we waiting for to be happy?"
  • 15:24 - 15:29
So there is an exercise that
    helps us recognize this,
  • 15:30 - 15:34
    the wonders of life,
    the Kingdom of God,
  • 15:34 - 15:38
    the conditions of happiness
    that are available.
  • 15:38 - 15:42
And you can generate a feeling of joy,
  • 15:42 - 15:47
    a feeling of happiness,
no matter where, no matter when.
  • 15:50 - 15:53
    A real practitioner of mindfulness
  • 15:54 - 15:56
    is able to...
  • 15:59 - 16:07
    generate a feeling of joy
    and happiness no matter when.
  • 16:09 - 16:11
It is the art of happiness.
  • 16:11 - 16:12
    It is simple.
  • 16:12 - 16:13
    It is easy.
  • 16:14 - 16:16
    Anyone can do it.
  • 16:17 - 16:20
And then there are two exercises.
  • 16:22 - 16:27
When a painful feeling begins to rise up,
  • 16:29 - 16:35
when a painful emotion begins to rise up,
  • 16:36 - 16:44
you can breathe in such a way that
you can generate the energy of mindfulness
  • 16:45 - 16:51
    in order to recognize
    this feeling, this emotion.
  • 16:52 - 16:54
    and embrace it tenderly.
  • 16:55 - 17:00
    And you bring relief
after a couple of minutes of practice.
  • 17:01 - 17:03
    It is very important.
  • 17:04 - 17:07
    We have to listen to...
  • 17:10 - 17:12
    our own suffering...
  • 17:14 - 17:18
in our body, in our feelings and emotions.
  • 17:20 - 17:23
The other person also has this.
  • 17:26 - 17:28
    He has suffering in him.
  • 17:30 - 17:36
    So he talks, he acts
in such a way that makes us suffer,
  • 17:37 - 17:42
He does not do it because
he has the intention to make us suffer,
  • 17:43 - 17:48
    but because he cannot
    handle this suffering in him.
  • 17:49 - 17:54
    And us, practitioners, we know
    how to handle suffering.
  • 17:55 - 17:58
    Handling suffering is an art!
  • 18:00 - 18:07
We can talk about the art of happiness
and we can talk about the art of suffering.
  • 18:08 - 18:10
We have to learn how to suffer.
  • 18:11 - 18:20
He who knows how to suffer,
suffers much less than the other people.
  • 18:23 - 18:24
    Believe me.
  • 18:27 - 18:34
The person who knows how to suffer
suffers much less than other people.
  • 18:36 - 18:37
    It is a fact.
  • 18:40 - 18:46
And if you are capable of
    seeing this suffering in him
  • 18:48 - 18:50
    you no longer suffer.
  • 18:51 - 18:54
Poor guy, poor friend, poor colleague!
  • 18:54 - 18:56
He has so much suffering in him.
  • 18:57 - 19:00
    He does not know how
    to handle this suffering.
  • 19:00 - 19:05
    He does that and suffers
    and makes other people suffer.
  • 19:06 - 19:10
So when you react like that,
there is compassion in your eyes.
  • 19:12 - 19:15
    And when you look
    at people with compassion
  • 19:15 - 19:16
    you do not suffer.
  • 19:16 - 19:19
Compassion is an antidote to anger.
  • 19:22 - 19:27
And it is very easy to generate
    the energy of compassion,
  • 19:28 - 19:33
    very easy to recognize
the enormous suffering in him or her.
  • 19:35 - 19:39
    And you have compassion
    with him, with her.
  • 19:39 - 19:44
    And you can always smile
    gently and compassionately.
  • 19:45 - 19:46
    She will be surprised:
  • 19:49 - 19:51
    "How do you do that?
  • 19:54 - 20:01
    Other people would react
with anger in a situation like that.
  • 20:02 - 20:08
    But you, you are relaxed,
    you smile, you have compassion."
  • 20:10 - 20:13
And like this we can help other people.
  • 20:13 - 20:14
    So...
  • 20:15 - 20:18
making a comeback is the first step.
  • 20:20 - 20:24
And after that, you can continue to help
  • 20:24 - 20:27
    your partner and
    the members of your family.
  • 20:29 - 20:37
Because the other person has witnessed
    this transformation in you
  • 20:39 - 20:41
    and because he believes you
  • 20:42 - 20:48
he can succeed just like you
    if he acts the same
  • 20:51 - 20:57
    and the reconciliation, the restoration
    of communication will be possible,
  • 21:00 - 21:10
    because loving speech and
    compassionate listening always help
  • 21:14 - 21:22
    to restore communication
    and bring about reconciliation.
  • 21:24 - 21:31
"Dear friend, I know you have
suffered a lot in the years passed.
  • 21:34 - 21:38
I have not been able to help you.
  • 21:40 - 21:45
I reacted in such a way that I made
    the situation more complicated.
  • 21:49 - 21:54
Dear friend, it is not my intention
    to make you suffer.
  • 21:56 - 22:03
I did it because I did not see and
understand the huge suffering in you.
  • 22:04 - 22:06
You have to help me, my friend.
  • 22:06 - 22:10
    You have to tell me
everything that is in your heart:
  • 22:12 - 22:14
    your difficulties, your suffering.
  • 22:17 - 22:23
I am convinced that I will not react
the way I did in the past anymore
  • 22:23 - 22:26
if I only knew your suffering.
  • 22:27 - 22:32
And you have to help me, my friend,
you have to tell me what is on your heart."
  • 22:34 - 22:35
    That is loving speech!
  • 22:36 - 22:42
And that is the key the can open
    the door to someone's heart.
  • 22:44 - 22:45
    It is very effective!
  • 22:46 - 22:53
Even after five years of difficulties
he will tell you what is on his heart.
  • 22:55 - 22:58
    And now you can practice
    like Avalokiteshvara:
  • 22:59 - 23:02
    listening with compassion,
    just listening.
  • 23:06 - 23:08
    Compassionate listening...
  • 23:12 - 23:17
    serves one single purpose:
helping the other person empty his heart
  • 23:18 - 23:20
    so he will suffer less.
  • 23:22 - 23:25
    So, even if he says
    things that are incorrect,
  • 23:27 - 23:29
    you can not interrupt him.
  • 23:30 - 23:32
You have to let him talk,
  • 23:33 - 23:34
    talk and talk.
  • 23:36 - 23:42
Maybe later you will have the time
    to offer some information
  • 23:47 - 23:50
that helps him to correct his perception.
  • 23:50 - 23:52
    But not now!
  • 23:53 - 23:55
    Very effective!
  • 23:57 - 24:03
    Restoring communication and
    bringing about reconciliation.
  • 24:05 - 24:06
    And...
  • 24:07 - 24:13
    with the collaboration between
teacher, his partner and his family
  • 24:15 - 24:20
    we can make another...step:
  • 24:21 - 24:25
    We can do something about
    our work environment
  • 24:27 - 24:32
including our colleagues and our students.
  • 24:35 - 24:39
    We know that the majority
    of our colleaugues
  • 24:39 - 24:41
    has suffering in him.
  • 24:45 - 24:50
    If we have understanding
    and compassion inside
  • 24:52 - 24:54
    we already suffer much less
  • 24:55 - 24:59
    when those things,
    when those people explode.
  • 25:05 - 25:12
So we have to dream about
    building a Sangha, a community
  • 25:14 - 25:21
    among your colleagues,
among the personnel of the institution.
  • 25:22 - 25:25
    There have to be
    two, three or four people
  • 25:26 - 25:29
    with whom you can
    communicate better, right?
  • 25:31 - 25:36
So you have to talk with them first
    about the state of things.
  • 25:38 - 25:43
    And those people have seen
    your transformation and healing.
  • 25:45 - 25:50
    And you are fresh,
    compassionate and smiling.
  • 25:53 - 25:55
So you can talk with them.
  • 25:56 - 25:58
You have to build a Sangha.
  • 26:03 - 26:10
You have to get together more often
to be able to continue the practice,
  • 26:12 - 26:19
not only on your own or as a family
    but as a community.
  • 26:21 - 26:24
    Building a Sangha is something...
  • 26:28 - 26:30
    absolutely necessary!
  • 26:38 - 26:42
    You can very well do
    walking meditation together.
  • 26:44 - 26:46
    You can drink tea together.
  • 26:47 - 26:51
You can do a session of
    total relaxation together.
  • 26:53 - 27:01
And you can create a small community
    consisting of happy teachers.
  • 27:03 - 27:06
Happy teachers will change the world!
  • 27:08 - 27:12
    And with this little Sangha
    you will be able change
  • 27:14 - 27:18
    the whole community
    of the institution.
  • 27:20 - 27:23
You can write a letter, saying:
  • 27:23 - 27:25
"We are a group of people.
  • 27:27 - 27:32
We have done this and that
and accomplished a lot of change
  • 27:33 - 27:36
in our lives, in our work
    and in our class.
  • 27:38 - 27:44
We think that if you could join us,
    that would be wonderful
  • 27:46 - 27:51
    And your other colleagues
    will start to taste
  • 27:51 - 27:54
    this sort of peace,
    brotherhood and relaxation.
  • 27:57 - 28:00
We cannot go on like this.
  • 28:01 - 28:04
    If teachers are unhappy,
  • 28:06 - 28:12
if they do not have harmony
    and peace among each other,
  • 28:13 - 28:15
how will we help young people
  • 28:15 - 28:19
    to suffer less and
    to succeed in their work?"
  • 28:21 - 28:27
    So building a Sangha is
    something absolutely necessary.
  • 28:29 - 28:33
    And every teacher
has to be a Sangha builder.
  • 28:35 - 28:43
Did you know that the first thing
the Buddha thought after his enlightenment
  • 28:47 - 28:49
    was building a Sangha?
  • 28:50 - 28:52
He knew very well that without a Sangha
  • 28:52 - 28:56
    he could not succeed
in the career of a Buddha.
  • 29:01 - 29:12
The teacher also has a noble,
    beautiful and respectable job.
  • 29:14 - 29:19
    So without a Sangha
    we cannot do much.
  • 29:21 - 29:26
    Therefore building a Sangha
    is something absolutely necessary.
  • 29:28 - 29:35
So dear friends, we are having a retreat,
    which is a wonderful thing.
  • 29:37 - 29:42
And we have the time and the opportunity
to practice all of that together
  • 29:42 - 29:48
I wish you a good and happy retreat!
  • 29:49 - 29:50
    Thank you.
