Are you Safe from God? - Tim Conway (43mins)

  • 0:15 - 0:17
    We boldly approach...
  • 0:17 - 0:19
Father, You promised the Holy Spirit
  • 0:19 - 0:21
    to them that ask.
  • 0:21 - 0:24
We know that the Spirit has come
  • 0:24 - 0:26
into this world to glorify Christ.
  • 0:26 - 0:27
    That's what we want.
  • 0:27 - 0:31
Lord, give us the Spirit, we pray.
  • 0:31 - 0:33
Give Him. As You've said for us to pray.
  • 0:33 - 0:36
    We ask.
  • 0:36 - 0:38
And Lord, we pray that we might have the Spirit
  • 0:38 - 0:39
that we would bring forth greater
  • 0:39 - 0:41
glory to Christ in the year ahead.
  • 0:41 - 0:43
    Whatever it is.
  • 0:43 - 0:45
Whether it's in mission, whether it's in evangelism,
  • 0:45 - 0:46
whether it's in any type of outreach,
  • 0:46 - 0:47
    whether it's in benevolence,
  • 0:47 - 0:50
whether it's in the love right here among ourselves,
  • 0:50 - 0:53
whether it's in our worship, whether it's in our singing,
  • 0:53 - 0:55
whatever it is, we pray that the Spirit of God
  • 0:55 - 0:57
would be unleashed upon the east side of
  • 0:57 - 1:01
San Antonio, that Christ might have all the glory.
  • 1:01 - 1:06
That these old refuges of demons out in these streets,
  • 1:06 - 1:09
that all these old places, broken down walls,
  • 1:09 - 1:11
that we may be the repairer of the breach,
  • 1:11 - 1:14
restorers of streets to be dwelt among.
  • 1:14 - 1:17
Lord, we pray that Christ would be honored,
  • 1:17 - 1:19
    that He would be magnified.
  • 1:19 - 1:22
If Christ would not be honored, then tear this church apart.
  • 1:22 - 1:25
Cast it out to the winds.
  • 1:25 - 1:28
But Lord, if You would be so pleased to cause
  • 1:28 - 1:31
that candlestick to burn bright here for one more year,
  • 1:31 - 1:34
Lord, that it would emanate with the beauties of Christ,
  • 1:34 - 1:37
with the fragrance of Christ, with the light,
  • 1:37 - 1:40
    the beaming light and fire,
  • 1:40 - 1:43
    may it shine forth, Lord.
  • 1:43 - 1:46
Father, You have been so good to us.
  • 1:46 - 1:49
For Christ's sake, You have been good to us.
  • 1:49 - 1:51
    We know it.
  • 1:51 - 1:55
We would be lying, we would be blind if we said otherwise.
  • 1:55 - 1:57
Lord, You have been good to us.
  • 1:57 - 2:01
Please Lord, show Your goodness to us today as well.
  • 2:01 - 2:02
In Christ's name we pray, Amen.
  • 2:02 - 2:07
Ok, quickly, on with our text.
  • 2:07 - 2:08
    Romans 10.
  • 2:08 - 2:11
I want to read five verses to you this morning.
  • 2:11 - 2:20
    Romans 10:9-13
  • 2:20 - 2:23
    Romans 10:9
  • 2:23 - 2:27
"If you confess with your mouth,
  • 2:27 - 2:30
    that Jesus is Lord."
  • 2:30 - 2:33
    Now remember, Christ says this:
  • 2:33 - 2:35
What comes out of the mouth is
  • 2:35 - 2:39
an indication of what is in the heart.
  • 2:39 - 2:41
Now that's not to say that people
  • 2:41 - 2:44
can't just say the words, "Jesus is Lord."
  • 2:44 - 2:48
    That's not what confession is.
  • 2:48 - 2:51
Confession is saying, "Jesus is Lord,"
  • 2:51 - 2:54
maybe even more so by your actions sometimes.
  • 2:54 - 2:56
    Remember what Scripture says,
  • 2:56 - 2:59
"by their works," (this is found in Titus)
  • 2:59 - 3:02
"by their works they deny Him."
  • 3:02 - 3:04
You can say one thing and by your works
  • 3:04 - 3:06
    deny what you say.
  • 3:06 - 3:10
So just confessing Jesus as Lord doesn't save you.
  • 3:10 - 3:15
It's that belief from the heart that wells up
  • 3:15 - 3:19
in a confession through words, through life.
  • 3:19 - 3:21
It's when you're in the family,
  • 3:21 - 3:25
and they are telling you to close your mouth,
  • 3:25 - 3:26
we don't want to hear that.
  • 3:26 - 3:29
But you're going to confess Christ as Lord.
  • 3:29 - 3:32
It's in the workplace, where they say, "we don't want any of that."
  • 3:32 - 3:35
"Away with your Christ. Away with your Christianity."
  • 3:35 - 3:37
"Away with your religion. We don't want it."
  • 3:37 - 3:40
But you confess it there when it's hard.
  • 3:40 - 3:41
Some of you've heard Paul Washer say
  • 3:41 - 3:44
it's when those Roman legions came down the street
  • 3:44 - 3:47
and they said, ok, offer up your little tax,
  • 3:47 - 3:50
offer up your little worship to Ceasar.
  • 3:50 - 3:53
And the Christians would say, "Jesus is Lord."
  • 3:53 - 3:55
    Not Ceasar, Jesus.
  • 3:55 - 3:57
    And it would cost them.
  • 3:57 - 3:58
    And that's the idea.
  • 3:58 - 3:59
    It's confessing Him.
  • 3:59 - 4:00
    That's what Christ says,
  • 4:00 - 4:03
"If you confess Me before men,
  • 4:03 - 4:06
I will confess you before My Father."
  • 4:06 - 4:08
    That's the idea right there.
  • 4:08 - 4:12
    Confessing Christ.
  • 4:12 - 4:16
And you know worked into the very fabric of this
  • 4:16 - 4:17
is they will not be put to shame.
  • 4:17 - 4:20
    You see, that's the temptation.
  • 4:20 - 4:21
That's what it says there in verse 11,
  • 4:21 - 4:23
"They'll not be put to shame."
  • 4:23 - 4:24
    Because that's the temptation.
  • 4:24 - 4:26
When you're before the family, the lost family,
  • 4:26 - 4:29
the world, the workplace, out there in the school,
  • 4:29 - 4:30
out there in the other places,
  • 4:30 - 4:34
    that's the temptation.
  • 4:34 - 4:37
To keep your mouth shut, and to be ashamed.
  • 4:37 - 4:42
But if you confess Him as Lord,
  • 4:42 - 4:47
believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead,
  • 4:47 - 4:49
    you will be saved.
  • 4:49 - 4:52
Make no doubt about it, you will be saved.
  • 4:52 - 4:56
Hey, I'm not saying you just flippantly spatter off a little words,
  • 4:56 - 4:57
    and you say very flippantly,
  • 4:57 - 4:59
"Well, I believe Jesus Christ was true, historic fact."
  • 4:59 - 5:01
That's not what I'm talking about.
  • 5:01 - 5:04
I'm saying if you believe truthfully in your heart,
  • 5:04 - 5:07
a faith that is willing to bank all on Christ,
  • 5:07 - 5:09
all your trust is there, I'm telling you this:
  • 5:09 - 5:11
    you will be saved.
  • 5:11 - 5:13
Make no qualms about that - no argument there.
  • 5:13 - 5:17
Scripture verifies it. You will be.
  • 5:17 - 5:20
It's not an exception. You will be.
  • 5:20 - 5:22
It's not maybe, you might be.
  • 5:22 - 5:23
    There's a certainty here.
  • 5:23 - 5:26
For with the heart one believes.
  • 5:26 - 5:28
    Not just with the head.
  • 5:28 - 5:29
You guys have to understand this.
  • 5:29 - 5:33
Anybody can rattle off historical facts.
  • 5:33 - 5:36
Now yes, our faith is based on historical facts.
  • 5:36 - 5:40
But you can say those facts and not really believe them.
  • 5:40 - 5:43
It's the person that's willing to cast all.
  • 5:43 - 5:45
All your money. All your life.
  • 5:45 - 5:48
All your time. All your family. All your children.
  • 5:48 - 5:51
Your spouse. Everything. All your material possessions.
  • 5:51 - 5:52
    It's there.
  • 5:52 - 5:55
Lord, You are Lord. It's all Yours.
  • 5:55 - 5:57
I've been bought with a price.
  • 5:57 - 6:03
That, and that alone, is the faith, the belief that justifies.
  • 6:03 - 6:06
And with the mouth one confesses and is saved.
  • 6:06 - 6:08
For the Scripture says everyone who believes in Him
  • 6:08 - 6:11
will not be put to shame.
  • 6:11 - 6:14
For there's no distinction between Jew and Greek.
  • 6:14 - 6:16
The same Lord is Lord of all,
  • 6:16 - 6:20
bestowing His riches on all who call on Him.
  • 6:20 - 6:28
For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.
  • 6:28 - 6:30
As you scan these five verses,
  • 6:30 - 6:34
it ought to be apparent to you right off.
  • 6:34 - 6:38
This is no discourse about predestination,
  • 6:38 - 6:40
nothing here about the second coming,
  • 6:40 - 6:43
this isn't about church order or gifts of the Spirit,
  • 6:43 - 6:47
    nothing here about the Trinity.
  • 6:47 - 6:49
    You know what?
  • 6:49 - 6:52
If you just search the word "saved"
  • 6:52 - 6:54
    in your New Testaments,
  • 6:54 - 6:57
    you know what you'll find?
  • 6:57 - 7:02
The word is not used anywhere in the Scriptures
  • 7:02 - 7:04
    in a more condensed fashion
  • 7:04 - 7:07
than right here in these five verses.
  • 7:07 - 7:12
There's nowhere in the Scriptures that the word "saved"
  • 7:12 - 7:15
shows up three times in five verses.
  • 7:15 - 7:20
    Except here.
  • 7:20 - 7:21
    You know what?
  • 7:21 - 7:23
Paul's dealing with one simple subject here.
  • 7:23 - 7:25
    You know what it is?
  • 7:25 - 7:29
    Being saved.
  • 7:29 - 7:31
    You can see it. Right?
  • 7:31 - 7:33
You see the word right there at the end of verse 9?
  • 7:33 - 7:36
You see it again at the end of verse 10.
  • 7:36 - 7:40
You see it again at the end of the verse 13.
  • 7:40 - 7:43
Ok, now everybody says, alright, we see it.
  • 7:43 - 7:48
Now let's move on to something more interesting.
  • 7:48 - 7:50
But hold on just a second...
  • 7:50 - 7:51
    let me tell you something,
  • 7:51 - 7:54
    the word "saved" -
  • 7:54 - 7:58
    there are few words associated
  • 7:58 - 8:01
with Christianity more than that word.
  • 8:01 - 8:04
We hear it all the time, right?
  • 8:04 - 8:06
I mean how many of you have not heard that
  • 8:06 - 8:13
    quaint, little expression, "Jesus saves"?
  • 8:13 - 8:15
You've seen it on bumper stickers,
  • 8:15 - 8:17
you've probably seen it on billboards,
  • 8:17 - 8:20
    you've seen it at ballgames.
  • 8:20 - 8:23
You don't see it so much anymore at ballgames.
  • 8:23 - 8:25
You don't see John 3:16 in the end zone anymore.
  • 8:25 - 8:27
    What happened to that?
  • 8:27 - 8:29
I guess people going to football games
  • 8:29 - 8:32
are more pagan now than ever, right?
  • 8:32 - 8:36
The beer drinkers probably threw a few bottles,
  • 8:36 - 8:41
and they realized they weren't welcome there.
  • 8:41 - 8:43
    Let me tell you something,
  • 8:43 - 8:45
people love to talk that way.
  • 8:45 - 8:47
    "Oh, I'm saved!"
  • 8:47 - 8:48
"I got saved when I was three."
  • 8:48 - 8:51
"I was baptized. I got saved."
  • 8:51 - 8:53
People love to throw that term around.
  • 8:53 - 8:55
    Saved, saved, saved.
  • 8:55 - 8:56
    We hear it a lot.
  • 8:56 - 8:58
People walk in here, "Are you saved?"
  • 8:58 - 9:00
    "Oh yeah, I'm saved."
  • 9:00 - 9:03
They're not saved, but they say they are.
  • 9:03 - 9:05
Because they haven't bowed the knee to Christ.
  • 9:05 - 9:08
There's no confession of His Lordship in their life.
  • 9:08 - 9:09
    Not by their works.
  • 9:09 - 9:11
Oh, they might say, "do you believe Jesus is Lord?"
  • 9:11 - 9:14
"Oh yeah, I believe He's Lord."
  • 9:14 - 9:16
Then they walk right out and they're slaves to sin.
  • 9:16 - 9:18
    They're not obeying Him.
  • 9:18 - 9:19
Don't you realize what it says?
  • 9:19 - 9:25
Why call ye Me, 'Lord, Lord,'
  • 9:25 - 9:29
and then you don't do the will of My Father in heaven?
  • 9:29 - 9:31
It's not those who say, "Lord, Lord."
  • 9:31 - 9:33
It's those who do the will of the Father.
  • 9:33 - 9:35
You say you've got to be doing something to get saved?
  • 9:35 - 9:38
I'm saying this, if you're truly saved,
  • 9:38 - 9:40
if you truly have that faith that saves,
  • 9:40 - 9:42
you're going to submit to Christ.
  • 9:42 - 9:44
    Because that's what happens.
  • 9:44 - 9:46
God says under the new covenant,
  • 9:46 - 9:49
I'm going to write My laws on their heart.
  • 9:49 - 9:50
I'm going to break their heart.
  • 9:50 - 9:52
I'm going to take that old stony thing out.
  • 9:52 - 9:54
I'm going to put a heart of flesh in.
  • 9:54 - 9:56
My laws will not be grievous.
  • 9:56 - 9:58
And if you say that you are a Christian,
  • 9:58 - 10:01
1 John 2 says, "but you don't keep His commandments,
  • 10:01 - 10:04
you're a liar. The truth isn't in you."
  • 10:04 - 10:06
Oh, I hope that just rings in our heads.
  • 10:06 - 10:07
    I'm trying to lay down,
  • 10:07 - 10:11
true Christianity is that which submits
  • 10:11 - 10:12
    to the Lordship of Christ.
  • 10:12 - 10:14
    It's that one thing.
  • 10:14 - 10:16
People banter around this idea of being saved
  • 10:16 - 10:18
    all the time, "I'm saved."
  • 10:18 - 10:21
And people come along, "yeah, I've been saved five times."
  • 10:21 - 10:22
    "Six times."
  • 10:22 - 10:24
Well, that's not a salvation that I want!
  • 10:24 - 10:26
If you can lose it, it's no good.
  • 10:26 - 10:28
    That's not being saved.
  • 10:28 - 10:30
    What are you saved from?
  • 10:30 - 10:35
You're certainly not saved if you can lose it.
  • 10:35 - 10:37
So here's what we're dealing with: saved.
  • 10:37 - 10:41
    Greek word: sozo
  • 10:41 - 10:44
Of the 110 times it's found in our New Testaments,
  • 10:44 - 10:47
93 times (that's about 85% of the time)
  • 10:47 - 10:53
it's translated "save" or some form of that (saved).
  • 10:53 - 10:56
Now listen, as I began studying this
  • 10:56 - 10:58
you know a lot of times I don't know where I'm going.
  • 10:58 - 11:01
I sit down and I open up my Bible
  • 11:01 - 11:03
and I start reading the next section of Scripture.
  • 11:03 - 11:05
I don't often know how far I'm going,
  • 11:05 - 11:07
what I'm going to deal with,
  • 11:07 - 11:08
    I just begin reading.
  • 11:08 - 11:10
Sometimes I know ahead of time.
  • 11:10 - 11:12
Sometimes I can see out two or three weeks.
  • 11:12 - 11:14
But this week, I opened up
  • 11:14 - 11:16
and I began reading these five verses
  • 11:16 - 11:18
    over and over and over.
  • 11:18 - 11:21
    And this word "saved."
  • 11:21 - 11:23
And I really began to think about,
  • 11:23 - 11:25
    what does it mean?
  • 11:25 - 11:28
And I'll tell you something that really probably pushed me off
  • 11:28 - 11:33
in the direction that I want to go this morning.
  • 11:33 - 11:38
I have Bible software that allows me to look at other translations.
  • 11:38 - 11:40
    Let me tell you something.
  • 11:40 - 11:45
    There is an English word
  • 11:45 - 11:56
that is usually used to define the word "save."
  • 11:56 - 11:59
    Linguistically, in the English language,
  • 11:59 - 12:05
it's almost spelled the same except one letter is swapped.
  • 12:05 - 12:16
And they're actually swapped for a letter that's very similar.
  • 12:16 - 12:22
You know what, it's the word "safe."
  • 12:22 - 12:28
    William Tyndale, 16th century martyr,
  • 12:28 - 12:31
burned at the stake by the Roman Catholic church.
  • 12:31 - 12:34
    What did he do?
  • 12:34 - 12:36
Must have been some pretty terrible crimes
  • 12:36 - 12:38
to take a man and burn him at the stake.
  • 12:38 - 12:40
What did he do? Rape a bunch of little children?
  • 12:40 - 12:44
    Was he a serial killer?
  • 12:44 - 12:47
    Roman Catholic church
  • 12:47 - 12:50
That's what God saved me out of.
  • 12:50 - 12:53
    Leddy, where are you at?
  • 12:53 - 12:58
You got saved out of that.
  • 12:58 - 13:02
    What did the guy do?
  • 13:02 - 13:09
He translated and published the New Testament Scriptures.
  • 13:09 - 13:11
    Let me tell you something.
  • 13:11 - 13:14
In his translation of the New Testament published in 1525,
  • 13:14 - 13:20
he actually translated Romans 10:10 this way,
  • 13:20 - 13:24
"For the belief of the heart justifieth,
  • 13:24 - 13:30
and to knowledge with the mouth, (that's confession)
  • 13:30 - 13:37
    maketh a man safe."
  • 13:37 - 13:39
Romans 10:13 he translates this way.
  • 13:39 - 13:43
Now listen, Tyndale is largely the source
  • 13:43 - 13:49
from which the translators of all of the English
  • 13:49 - 13:51
    translations come from.
  • 13:51 - 13:55
The King James was taken largely from Tyndale's work.
  • 13:55 - 13:58
And all subsequent translations as well
  • 13:58 - 14:01
    owe much to Tyndale's work.
  • 14:01 - 14:03
Listen to what he does with Romans 10:13,
  • 14:03 - 14:07
"For whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord,
  • 14:07 - 14:10
    shall be safe."
  • 14:10 - 14:13
As I got looking at that,
  • 14:13 - 14:17
    I suddenly began to feel
  • 14:17 - 14:22
this fear rise up in me.
  • 14:22 - 14:24
    Men are not safe.
  • 14:24 - 14:27
When we start talking about "saved,"
  • 14:27 - 14:29
the gut level meaning of saved,
  • 14:29 - 14:33
it carries the idea of making safe.
  • 14:33 - 14:38
If men need to be saved, they are not safe.
  • 14:38 - 14:39
You don't talk about being saved,
  • 14:39 - 14:41
    unless there is peril.
  • 14:41 - 14:45
    Unless there is danger.
  • 14:45 - 14:52
People, the human race, is not safe.
  • 14:52 - 14:54
    Think about that.
  • 14:54 - 14:59
The very concept demands a scary reality.
  • 14:59 - 15:06
It demands that there is something here.
  • 15:06 - 15:08
    There is something around us.
  • 15:08 - 15:12
    There is something out there,
  • 15:12 - 15:15
    that is constantly looming.
  • 15:15 - 15:16
    That is constantly reaching.
  • 15:16 - 15:19
That is constantly coming for man.
  • 15:19 - 15:25
That is endangering him with some type of harm,
  • 15:25 - 15:29
with some sort of death, with some sort of calamity.
  • 15:29 - 15:33
Something is out there. Something is there.
  • 15:33 - 15:36
Now, if somebody says, well, of course,
  • 15:36 - 15:39
    hell's out there.
  • 15:39 - 15:41
    That makes us afraid.
  • 15:41 - 15:45
After all, hell can burn us. Hell can harm us.
  • 15:45 - 15:48
    Hell can trap us.
  • 15:48 - 15:52
Hell - it's thirsty for the souls of wicked men,
  • 15:52 - 15:56
    and that makes us afraid.
  • 15:56 - 16:01
    Because we are such men.
  • 16:01 - 16:03
    But what is it?
  • 16:03 - 16:06
    What is hell?
  • 16:06 - 16:09
Hell is a place. That's all it is.
  • 16:09 - 16:10
    It's just a place.
  • 16:10 - 16:13
Yes, it may be a scary place, but it's nothing more than that.
  • 16:13 - 16:15
And you know what, on top of that?
  • 16:15 - 16:20
It's a place none of you currently are.
  • 16:20 - 16:22
So why do you fear it?
  • 16:22 - 16:27
You say well I fear it because, I might go there one day.
  • 16:27 - 16:29
    And that's right.
  • 16:29 - 16:33
    That's right.
  • 16:33 - 16:38
But listen to me, it's not like hell
  • 16:38 - 16:42
comes and gets us where we are.
  • 16:42 - 16:45
Look folks, hell is not the reason why men are not safe.
  • 16:45 - 16:48
There's something out there is that is far more terrifying
  • 16:48 - 16:51
than hell that men need protection from.
  • 16:51 - 16:53
You know what makes it so unsafe for us to
  • 16:53 - 16:55
    walk about in this world?
  • 16:55 - 16:59
For sinful men to even walk down this sidewalk?
  • 16:59 - 17:01
What is it that makes it so unsafe?
  • 17:01 - 17:04
It certainly isn't hell. It certainly isn't the devil.
  • 17:04 - 17:08
Folks, it's something far, far more dangerous
  • 17:08 - 17:09
    than those things.
  • 17:09 - 17:18
    It's man's worst nightmare.
  • 17:18 - 17:25
What you and I need to be saved from...
  • 17:25 - 17:30
That thing in this world that is not safe...
  • 17:30 - 17:34
    is God Himself.
  • 17:34 - 17:38
You know what? Jesus knew this.
  • 17:38 - 17:40
When He came to the earth and He walked among us,
  • 17:40 - 17:42
    He warned us.
  • 17:42 - 17:43
He said, men, don't be foolish. Open your eyes.
  • 17:43 - 17:46
The thing that you've got to fear is not
  • 17:46 - 17:48
    what you so typically fear.
  • 17:48 - 17:50
    It is something else.
  • 17:50 - 17:52
Men walk about - I'll guarantee you go out on these streets,
  • 17:52 - 17:53
    what do they fear?
  • 17:53 - 17:56
    They fear the police.
  • 17:56 - 17:58
They fear finding out they've got AIDS.
  • 17:58 - 18:00
Yes, they may fear hell, but you say, "do you fear God?"
  • 18:00 - 18:02
    No, they don't fear God.
  • 18:02 - 18:03
Why? Because in their mind He's
  • 18:03 - 18:06
just this big old fat Santa Claus old man up in the sky
  • 18:06 - 18:08
    sitting there smiling at them.
  • 18:08 - 18:10
If they realized what God was, if they could see
  • 18:10 - 18:12
the way He's looking at them right now,
  • 18:12 - 18:15
they would be terrified beyond description.
  • 18:15 - 18:17
And Christ comes to this earth,
  • 18:17 - 18:19
and He says I will warn you.
  • 18:19 - 18:21
    He warned us.
  • 18:21 - 18:25
I will warn you Whom you should fear.
  • 18:25 - 18:29
Luke 12:5, "You should fear Him Who after He has killed,
  • 18:29 - 18:33
has authority to cast into hell. Yes, I tell you..."
  • 18:33 - 18:36
Not fear hell, not fear death, not fear the devil,
  • 18:36 - 18:38
    Christ says fear Him.
  • 18:38 - 18:40
Fear Him Who has that authority.
  • 18:40 - 18:46
In Matthew 10:28, "Fear Him Who can destroy
  • 18:46 - 18:51
both soul and body in hell."
  • 18:51 - 18:57
So many people say, "My god is not like that."
  • 18:57 - 19:00
    "My god wouldn't do that."
  • 19:00 - 19:02
Let me tell you something, your god is not
  • 19:02 - 19:04
    the God of the Scriptures.
  • 19:04 - 19:07
One of the most terrifying texts in the Bible,
  • 19:07 - 19:10
Psalm 50:22, you know what the Lord
  • 19:10 - 19:13
    threatens to do to sinners?
  • 19:13 - 19:17
Our ESV says "tear them apart."
  • 19:17 - 19:20
    All other translations,
  • 19:20 - 19:24
God is threatening to tear sinners to pieces.
  • 19:24 - 19:27
The Lord is the One Who we looked at last week
  • 19:27 - 19:30
in Luke 19, Who says bring My enemies before Me
  • 19:30 - 19:32
    and slaughter them
  • 19:32 - 19:35
    before Me.
  • 19:35 - 19:37
This is the God of Scripture.
  • 19:37 - 19:39
All of you guys turn back in your Bibles right now
  • 19:39 - 19:41
to Romans 5. It's not far away.
  • 19:41 - 19:44
I want you to see this. Romans 5:9
  • 19:44 - 19:48
The Apostle Paul, he's preaching the Gospel.
  • 19:48 - 19:51
In one of the most extended, intricate fashions
  • 19:51 - 19:53
that you can find in the Scriptures.
  • 19:53 - 19:54
    Powerful.
  • 19:54 - 20:01
And in Romans 5:9, you tell me - you guys read that.
  • 20:01 - 20:03
Let your eyes go through that verse right there.
  • 20:03 - 20:06
You tell me what that verse tells us we need to be saved from.
  • 20:06 - 20:10
    The wrath of God.
  • 20:10 - 20:13
Now listen, wrath is not like this detached,
  • 20:13 - 20:15
    separate thing from God.
  • 20:15 - 20:16
    It is God's wrath.
  • 20:16 - 20:18
It is God Himself that has the wrath.
  • 20:18 - 20:21
It's not like wrath is some separated thing,
  • 20:21 - 20:22
    out there down the street,
  • 20:22 - 20:23
    away from Him.
  • 20:23 - 20:25
    It's God's wrath.
  • 20:25 - 20:30
He's saying you've got to be saved from God.
  • 20:30 - 20:36
How easily and flippantly men talk of being saved.
  • 20:36 - 20:40
But they have no idea what it is that they truly
  • 20:40 - 20:42
    need to be saved from.
  • 20:42 - 20:47
My friend, God is not this pushover old man
  • 20:47 - 20:49
    up in the sky somewhere.
  • 20:49 - 20:53
He is the Lord God Almighty.
  • 20:53 - 20:57
The whole earth is full of His glory.
  • 20:57 - 21:00
    He is fearful.
  • 21:00 - 21:03
He is your greatest need of salvation.
  • 21:03 - 21:07
What you need to be saved from is from Him.
  • 21:07 - 21:10
That's what men need to be saved from.
  • 21:10 - 21:12
    Sinners are not safe.
  • 21:12 - 21:14
    Because God is out there.
  • 21:14 - 21:17
    Because God is not safe.
  • 21:17 - 21:19
    Oh how men should fear.
  • 21:19 - 21:22
And I'm telling you, some of you sit in this room right now,
  • 21:22 - 21:24
    you've got false professions.
  • 21:24 - 21:29
They aren't worth the money you've got in your pocket.
  • 21:29 - 21:32
You've never truly submitted to Christ.
  • 21:32 - 21:36
You walk around with this foggy deception
  • 21:36 - 21:38
    about being saved.
  • 21:38 - 21:40
You like to calm your fears
  • 21:40 - 21:42
and tell yourself all is going to be well.
  • 21:42 - 21:44
    This God is out there.
  • 21:44 - 21:46
    And He's coming for you.
  • 21:46 - 21:47
And I'll tell you, all your false profession does
  • 21:47 - 21:52
is add to the wickedness, and add to the wrath,
  • 21:52 - 21:54
and add to what God is going to bring on your head
  • 21:54 - 21:58
very soon if you do not seek refuge in His Son.
  • 21:58 - 22:01
There's only one place of safetly, folks.
  • 22:01 - 22:03
You are not safe where you are outside of Christ.
  • 22:03 - 22:05
You can have the greatest profession in the world,
  • 22:05 - 22:06
but if you are outside of Christ,
  • 22:06 - 22:12
if you're deceived, you better fear.
  • 22:12 - 22:15
Christ Himself the Savior warned you.
  • 22:15 - 22:19
    Fear Him.
  • 22:19 - 22:21
Do you know what? I know how this was.
  • 22:21 - 22:23
I was living in all sorts of sin.
  • 22:23 - 22:26
You go back 20 years, there I am,
  • 22:26 - 22:29
head over heels immersed in the muck
  • 22:29 - 22:30
and the filth of my sin.
  • 22:30 - 22:33
And you know what I thought?
  • 22:33 - 22:36
I thought God was smiling on me.
  • 22:36 - 22:38
    Have you guys been there?
  • 22:38 - 22:40
I don't doubt we've got some lost people
  • 22:40 - 22:41
    in this place right now.
  • 22:41 - 22:43
    That's your perception.
  • 22:43 - 22:46
Wicked men typically think God is pleased with them,
  • 22:46 - 22:49
not really too concerned about their sin.
  • 22:49 - 22:51
Many have this concept in their mind,
  • 22:51 - 22:53
that He just sort of winks at their sin.
  • 22:53 - 22:54
    Kicks it under the rug.
  • 22:54 - 22:56
    Not a big deal.
  • 22:56 - 22:58
Many people imagine God up there in heaven,
  • 22:58 - 23:01
you know kind of weak, wringing his hands,
  • 23:01 - 23:02
"oh, you know I'm doing everything I can
  • 23:02 - 23:04
for those poor sinners down there.
  • 23:04 - 23:05
There's nothing left for me to do,
  • 23:05 - 23:07
it's all left in their hands now.
  • 23:07 - 23:09
Oh, I want them to be saved so bad.
  • 23:09 - 23:11
I just have all these good purposes,
  • 23:11 - 23:13
and I'm smiling at them. I'm crying for them.
  • 23:13 - 23:17
And everything in me, I just wish there was more I could do."
  • 23:17 - 23:19
People have this idea that God is like that.
  • 23:19 - 23:22
I'll tell you what, that's a misguided notion.
  • 23:22 - 23:24
People running around with this idea:
  • 23:24 - 23:26
God never puts anybody in hell.
  • 23:26 - 23:29
Your own sins take you there.
  • 23:29 - 23:35
Oh, you have misread your Bibles if you think that.
  • 23:35 - 23:37
Christ says you better fear Him Who
  • 23:37 - 23:43
has the authority to cast into hell.
  • 23:43 - 23:44
    Bank on it.
  • 23:44 - 23:46
    It will be God.
  • 23:46 - 23:48
If you go to hell in this room,
  • 23:48 - 23:52
it will be God who cast you there.
  • 23:52 - 23:53
    And He wil do it.
  • 23:53 - 23:57
And He will do it for certain.
  • 23:57 - 23:59
    He is not safe.
  • 23:59 - 24:01
If you are walking in your sins,
  • 24:01 - 24:04
    you are not safe.
  • 24:04 - 24:07
    You imagine there's any reluctance?
  • 24:07 - 24:09
There's any weakness with God to cast wicked men
  • 24:09 - 24:11
    into hell this very moment?
  • 24:11 - 24:12
I'll tell you when God rises up,
  • 24:12 - 24:14
    who's going to resist Him?
  • 24:14 - 24:16
Who's going to stand in His way?
  • 24:16 - 24:18
If He put men in hell, I'll tell you what,
  • 24:18 - 24:19
they're going in there right now.
  • 24:19 - 24:21
Multitudes are going in there right now.
  • 24:21 - 24:23
Do you think God's got any reluctance
  • 24:23 - 24:25
    to throw sinners into hell?
  • 24:25 - 24:27
    He does not.
  • 24:27 - 24:33
Hell is filling up even this very moment.
  • 24:33 - 24:34
Just because some guy's off in India
  • 24:34 - 24:36
somewhere or Africa, living in his wickedness,
  • 24:36 - 24:39
beholding what he can of the glory of God
  • 24:39 - 24:41
in the creation, and he refuses it,
  • 24:41 - 24:44
he denies it, he suppresses it.
  • 24:44 - 24:47
I'm telling you what, there's no reluctance with God
  • 24:47 - 24:49
to take somebody like that and cast them into hell.
  • 24:49 - 24:53
They're going in there by the millions.
  • 24:53 - 24:55
    Absolutely.
  • 24:55 - 24:59
    Listen to this, Nahum 1:6,
  • 24:59 - 25:05
"Who can stand before His indignation?
  • 25:05 - 25:09
Who can endure the heat of His anger?
  • 25:09 - 25:13
His wrath is poured out like fire,
  • 25:13 - 25:16
and the rocks are broken into pieces by Him."
  • 25:16 - 25:17
You say I don't like this.
  • 25:17 - 25:20
This is not what I wanted to hear today.
  • 25:20 - 25:23
I'll tell you what. You can get in front of smooth-mouthed,
  • 25:23 - 25:26
slippery fellows that will tickle your ears
  • 25:26 - 25:28
and tell you what you want to hear.
  • 25:28 - 25:29
I know a lot of people aren't saying this,
  • 25:29 - 25:32
but this is what our Scriptures tell us.
  • 25:32 - 25:37
Look, when the whole earth trembles at His voice,
  • 25:37 - 25:40
and rocks break into pieces before Him,
  • 25:40 - 25:44
do you think you will be able to stand before Him?
  • 25:44 - 25:46
    Can you feel it, sinner?
  • 25:46 - 25:50
    You're not safe.
  • 25:50 - 25:53
    Let me ask you this:
  • 25:53 - 25:56
What do you think there is to keep God from
  • 25:56 - 26:01
coming upon you this very hour?
  • 26:01 - 26:04
Do you think there's something standing in the way?
  • 26:04 - 26:06
    Listen, you say justice.
  • 26:06 - 26:08
    Justice.
  • 26:08 - 26:09
    I've heard people say that.
  • 26:09 - 26:14
"All I want when I get there is what I deserve."
  • 26:14 - 26:18
Justice does not stand in the way of God throwing
  • 26:18 - 26:20
    you into hell right now.
  • 26:20 - 26:21
    Scripture.
  • 26:21 - 26:24
Scripture talks about "God so loved."
  • 26:24 - 26:26
    Let me tell you this.
  • 26:26 - 26:28
    Scripture says that everyone
  • 26:28 - 26:32
who is not obeying the Son,
  • 26:32 - 26:35
John 3:36, the wrath of God is upon you already
  • 26:35 - 26:42
and you face, what is it, John 3:16, 17, 18?
  • 26:42 - 26:43
Yes, God so loved the world,
  • 26:43 - 26:45
    but I'll tell you this,
  • 26:45 - 26:47
it says that if you have not believed,
  • 26:47 - 26:50
    God's condemnation is upon you.
  • 26:50 - 26:53
It's amazing how everybody wants to quote verse 16.
  • 26:53 - 26:58
    What about verse 17? 18? 36?
  • 26:58 - 27:00
People don't like to go there.
  • 27:00 - 27:03
    There's wrath, folks.
  • 27:03 - 27:06
There is wrath. There is condemnation.
  • 27:06 - 27:07
    You know what?
  • 27:07 - 27:08
You say, what about the law?
  • 27:08 - 27:10
Let me tell you this. The law says this:
  • 27:10 - 27:13
Everyone who does not keep all things written
  • 27:13 - 27:16
in the book of the law, to do them, is cursed.
  • 27:16 - 27:19
You know what? Don't make any appeal to justice.
  • 27:19 - 27:21
Don't make any appeal to Scripture.
  • 27:21 - 27:22
Don't make any appeal to God's law.
  • 27:22 - 27:25
Because all three are standing against you.
  • 27:25 - 27:28
All three are urging God right now,
  • 27:28 - 27:30
    "Cast them away!"
  • 27:30 - 27:32
They demand your head. They demand your blood.
  • 27:32 - 27:33
    Justice demands it.
  • 27:33 - 27:34
    Scripture demands it.
  • 27:34 - 27:36
    The Law demands it.
  • 27:36 - 27:38
I'm telling you, you don't have a cheering section there with God,
  • 27:38 - 27:42
    egging Him on.
  • 27:42 - 27:43
    As someone has said before,
  • 27:43 - 27:45
when man first sinned, those angels were
  • 27:45 - 27:47
reaching for the hilt of their sword.
  • 27:47 - 27:50
They were looking to execute judgment.
  • 27:50 - 27:52
There's only one thing standing between
  • 27:52 - 27:56
the sinner and hell flames right this second.
  • 27:56 - 27:59
I'll tell you what, last night as I was out
  • 27:59 - 28:03
under that cloud, under the sky,
  • 28:03 - 28:07
I was looking at the horizon all the way around,
  • 28:07 - 28:12
    the vastness of the sky.
  • 28:12 - 28:17
I was imagining all that I could see
  • 28:17 - 28:25
    to be one massive floodgate.
  • 28:25 - 28:29
    A sinner stands underneath that.
  • 28:29 - 28:33
And that thing begins to bulge.
  • 28:33 - 28:36
The wrath of God held back.
  • 28:36 - 28:41
    It bulges and it creaks.
  • 28:41 - 28:43
    It's about to give way.
  • 28:43 - 28:47
All the wrath of God stored up.
  • 28:47 - 28:49
    Listen to me!
  • 28:49 - 28:56
Scripture does not call the sinner a child of wrath for nothing.
  • 28:56 - 28:59
It means there is wrath against you right now.
  • 28:59 - 29:01
    People have this idea,
  • 29:01 - 29:03
"Oh, God is fiercely angry with those people in hell."
  • 29:03 - 29:04
    Let me tell you this:
  • 29:04 - 29:06
There are some of you sitting in this room right now
  • 29:06 - 29:08
that God is more fiercely angry with than some
  • 29:08 - 29:11
    he's already tormenting in hell.
  • 29:11 - 29:13
You say, "Well, why am I still here?"
  • 29:13 - 29:16
Only because your time has not run out yet.
  • 29:16 - 29:18
    Theirs has.
  • 29:18 - 29:22
Some of you have committed much more
  • 29:22 - 29:28
grievous sins against God than some in hell.
  • 29:28 - 29:32
There are Africans, there are Indians in that fire right now
  • 29:32 - 29:34
that have not heard the truth that some of you
  • 29:34 - 29:38
lost folks in this room have heard.
  • 29:38 - 29:41
God's wrath against you is storing up,
  • 29:41 - 29:44
that floodgate is bulging, it is creaking,
  • 29:44 - 29:46
it is ready to come in.
  • 29:46 - 29:49
There's only one thing holding it back right now.
  • 29:49 - 29:56
It's not justice, it's not Scripture, it's not the Law of God.
  • 29:56 - 30:01
It's God's sovereign pleasure to hold it back this moment.
  • 30:01 - 30:03
    That's it.
  • 30:03 - 30:08
    Let me tell you something.
  • 30:08 - 30:15
There are few Scriptures that give us a glimpse.
  • 30:15 - 30:17
One of them is found back in Genesis.
  • 30:17 - 30:18
    Let me tell you something.
  • 30:18 - 30:20
God comes along, He's speaking to Abraham.
  • 30:20 - 30:22
He says Abraham, let Me tell you something,
  • 30:22 - 30:24
I'm going to take your offspring,
  • 30:24 - 30:27
I'm going to take them into Egypt.
  • 30:27 - 30:29
I'm going to leave them there 400 years.
  • 30:29 - 30:31
4 generations, I'm going to leave them there.
  • 30:31 - 30:33
    Why?
  • 30:33 - 30:36
    Why not two generations?
  • 30:36 - 30:39
    You know why?
  • 30:39 - 30:41
    Because when they come out,
  • 30:41 - 30:45
they're going to kill the Amorites.
  • 30:45 - 30:48
When they come out, they are
  • 30:48 - 30:51
going to subdue seven nations in Canaan.
  • 30:51 - 30:55
You know what God says to Abraham?
  • 30:55 - 31:06
The iniquity of the Amorites is not yet full.
  • 31:06 - 31:10
You know what Daniel the prophet said?
  • 31:10 - 31:17
He speaks about transgressors not yet
  • 31:17 - 31:21
    reaching their limit.
  • 31:21 - 31:23
    Paul to the Thessalonians
  • 31:23 - 31:26
    talks about the Jews
  • 31:26 - 31:30
filling up the measure of their sin.
  • 31:30 - 31:34
    Let me tell you something,
  • 31:34 - 31:46
    Sinners only sin so far.
  • 31:46 - 31:54
You cannot hide beneath a false profession.
  • 31:54 - 31:58
That floodgate is going to bulge so far.
  • 31:58 - 32:00
That measure is going to come up.
  • 32:00 - 32:03
    Your time is numbered.
  • 32:03 - 32:04
    You say, "Oh, I'm healthy."
  • 32:04 - 32:06
People have this idea, don't they?
  • 32:06 - 32:09
Oh, you know, the sun's shining...
  • 32:09 - 32:12
I got sick - God healed me.
  • 32:12 - 32:14
I was in this car wreck - God spared me.
  • 32:14 - 32:16
And they think because they've seen these
  • 32:16 - 32:18
little glimmers of God's mercy to preserve them
  • 32:18 - 32:21
from that pit of fire already, they suppose,
  • 32:21 - 32:23
    that must mean God's wrath
  • 32:23 - 32:24
does not hang over my head.
  • 32:24 - 32:26
That must mean everything is ok.
  • 32:26 - 32:30
I've made my peace with Him upstairs.
  • 32:30 - 32:33
    Don't buy into that deception.
  • 32:33 - 32:41
That floodgate is ready to unleash on your heads,
  • 32:41 - 32:45
if you have not a place of safety.
  • 32:45 - 32:48
    Man is not safe.
  • 32:48 - 32:49
    Let me tell you something,
  • 32:49 - 32:52
there's a time when those Israelites,
  • 32:52 - 32:54
they're out there and they began to complain,
  • 32:54 - 32:56
    and they began to grumble,
  • 32:56 - 33:02
and it's like spontaneous combustion took place.
  • 33:02 - 33:04
If you've never read about it, folks, it happened.
  • 33:04 - 33:08
Numbers 11:1 - you read about it sometime.
  • 33:08 - 33:08
    I'll tell you what happened.
  • 33:08 - 33:09
There was sin in the camp.
  • 33:09 - 33:12
    God dwelling in that camp.
  • 33:12 - 33:16
And it's like this sin - when people have sin
  • 33:16 - 33:21
that is seething and breeding in the heart,
  • 33:21 - 33:23
you know what the natural course of things is?
  • 33:23 - 33:28
It's for God to break out in fury and fire and wrath.
  • 33:28 - 33:31
Spontaneous combustion began to consume people
  • 33:31 - 33:36
in the outer vestiges of that camp.
  • 33:36 - 33:39
Oh, we feel so secure. Our feet our planted.
  • 33:39 - 33:40
    Let me tell you something,
  • 33:40 - 33:41
you may feel like your feet are planted
  • 33:41 - 33:43
    on the ground right now.
  • 33:43 - 33:45
You may feel like you're pretty healthy right now.
  • 33:45 - 33:48
But I'm telling you, if you're outside of Christ,
  • 33:48 - 33:56
you are on a very rocky foundation.
  • 33:56 - 33:59
    That great big massive as-far-as-the-sky
  • 33:59 - 34:03
the limits of it who can measure?
  • 34:03 - 34:05
    The wrath of God.
  • 34:05 - 34:08
    Who can measure the wrath
  • 34:08 - 34:11
    against a lifetime of sin?
  • 34:11 - 34:16
When God's wrath against one sin of Adam and Eve
  • 34:16 - 34:20
cost them paradise, cost them their life.
  • 34:20 - 34:22
    One sin.
  • 34:22 - 34:23
    Who can imagine the wrath?
  • 34:23 - 34:26
When Scripture calls the lost "children of wrath,"
  • 34:26 - 34:29
you've got to understand, thunderclouds are black,
  • 34:29 - 34:32
it is ready to rain torrents of wrath.
  • 34:32 - 34:38
There is only that one thing that holds it back.
  • 34:38 - 34:54
    God only forebears so long.
  • 34:54 - 34:57
    Let me tell you...
  • 34:57 - 35:01
I was at my step-dad's side.
  • 35:01 - 35:04
    He refused Christ.
  • 35:04 - 35:08
He went to church when he found out he had terminal cancer.
  • 35:08 - 35:10
But anytime I talked to him about Christ,
  • 35:10 - 35:11
he didn't want to hear it.
  • 35:11 - 35:12
Anytime I talked to him about sin,
  • 35:12 - 35:14
he didn't want to hear it.
  • 35:14 - 35:17
He rejected Christ to his dying day.
  • 35:17 - 35:19
I was at his bedside as I watched him
  • 35:19 - 35:24
    pass off into eternity.
  • 35:24 - 35:29
I'll tell you this, it's not even possible
  • 35:29 - 35:36
for us to conceive the colossal wave of the floods
  • 35:36 - 35:38
of the fierceness and wrath of God
  • 35:38 - 35:42
that rushed upon him with inconceivable fury
  • 35:42 - 35:47
and omnipotent power that moment he passed off.
  • 35:47 - 35:52
We don't see it happen, so we can become blinded to it.
  • 35:52 - 35:55
    We become senseless to it.
  • 35:55 - 36:02
    We can fall asleep.
  • 36:02 - 36:06
    Children of wrath.
  • 36:06 - 36:09
I found this ridiculous quote on the Internet yesterday.
  • 36:09 - 36:11
    Somebody makes the claim,
  • 36:11 - 36:14
"God does not send anyone to hell - they send themselves."
  • 36:14 - 36:16
    One very well known televangelist,
  • 36:16 - 36:18
you'd all know his name if I said it.
  • 36:18 - 36:19
He says this, this is his quote:
  • 36:19 - 36:21
"God doesn't send anyone to hell.
  • 36:21 - 36:23
Anyone who goes to hell will be there
  • 36:23 - 36:26
    because of decisions they've made.
  • 36:26 - 36:29
I'm not going to deny that people end up in hell
  • 36:29 - 36:30
    because of decisions they've made."
  • 36:30 - 36:32
But he comes to this conclusion:
  • 36:32 - 36:35
    "you send yourself there."
  • 36:35 - 36:37
    Oh, don't be deceived.
  • 36:37 - 36:40
    God casts men there.
  • 36:40 - 36:43
    I'll tell you this.
  • 36:43 - 36:46
When a child of Adam, a son of Adam, a daughter of Adam,
  • 36:46 - 36:48
they walk around out in this world,
  • 36:48 - 36:49
    tainted with sin,
  • 36:49 - 36:51
    they are not safe.
  • 36:51 - 36:52
    They may feel it.
  • 36:52 - 36:55
They may feel young. They may feel healthy.
  • 36:55 - 36:58
They may feel good. They may feel happy.
  • 36:58 - 37:02
    But they are not safe.
  • 37:02 - 37:06
The very ground they walk on
  • 37:06 - 37:09
    is made of such material,
  • 37:09 - 37:10
it is ready to cave in.
  • 37:10 - 37:12
    Let me tell you something,
  • 37:12 - 37:14
can you imagine if you guys were right now
  • 37:14 - 37:21
walking on this decaying, rotting fabric
  • 37:21 - 37:24
    out over some great chasm?
  • 37:24 - 37:25
    And you're walking upon it.
  • 37:25 - 37:28
And every time you sin, bang,
  • 37:28 - 37:30
there's another weight on top of you.
  • 37:30 - 37:32
And you sin again, bang, there's another weight.
  • 37:32 - 37:35
And it's pressing you, pressing you,
  • 37:35 - 37:37
    down through that rotten fabric.
  • 37:37 - 37:40
There is the mouth gaping wide open for hell.
  • 37:40 - 37:42
And every time you sin, God presses,
  • 37:42 - 37:45
    that weight is coming down.
  • 37:45 - 37:50
That great big door of God's floodgate of wrath,
  • 37:50 - 37:52
    bulging, ready to come forth.
  • 37:52 - 37:53
    And you tempt it.
  • 37:53 - 37:56
The very hand that holds it back -
  • 37:56 - 37:58
you kick against it, you kick against it.
  • 37:58 - 38:01
With every sin, you hate God, hate His people,
  • 38:01 - 38:02
    hate His Word.
  • 38:02 - 38:04
You say, that's not me - I don't hate it.
  • 38:04 - 38:06
    You're talking awful graphic.
  • 38:06 - 38:07
    I'm telling you this,
  • 38:07 - 38:09
if you have not bowed the knee to Jesus Christ,
  • 38:09 - 38:13
you can maybe have some concept of God in your mind.
  • 38:13 - 38:15
You can have some deception you're going to heaven.
  • 38:15 - 38:18
    But you're not.
  • 38:18 - 38:20
It's not those who call Him, "Lord, Lord."
  • 38:20 - 38:23
It's those who do the will of the Father in heaven.
  • 38:23 - 38:25
    You kick against His Lordship.
  • 38:25 - 38:28
    Listen.
  • 38:28 - 38:33
Why it is so important there in Romans 10:9?
  • 38:33 - 38:34
That Christ came out of the grave.
  • 38:34 - 38:35
Let me tell you why it's important.
  • 38:35 - 38:38
In this epistle to the Romans,
  • 38:38 - 38:40
the one thing that Paul wants us to see
  • 38:40 - 38:42
about the resurrection from the dead
  • 38:42 - 38:44
back in Romans 1:4 is this:
  • 38:44 - 38:46
Christ coming out of the grave proved Him
  • 38:46 - 38:50
to be the Son of God in power.
  • 38:50 - 38:53
    When Christ declared Himself to be the Son;
  • 38:53 - 38:54
When He said, "God is my Father."
  • 38:54 - 38:56
    What did they do?
  • 38:56 - 38:57
    They picked up stones.
  • 38:57 - 38:58
    I'll tell you why,
  • 38:58 - 39:00
because that title "Son of God" means deity.
  • 39:00 - 39:02
It means He's equal with God.
  • 39:02 - 39:04
    I'll tell you this,
  • 39:04 - 39:07
that great floodgate that is just bending
  • 39:07 - 39:12
under the weight of the wrath toward sinners,
  • 39:12 - 39:15
you realize what it means when it says,
  • 39:15 - 39:18
"He Who knew no sin became sin."
  • 39:18 - 39:23
That's not safe to become sin.
  • 39:23 - 39:29
He willingly walked out underneath that floodgate.
  • 39:29 - 39:34
He said, "Father, I'll stand in the place of My people."
  • 39:34 - 39:36
    And bang!
  • 39:36 - 39:37
    That floodgate came open.
  • 39:37 - 39:43
Every bit of the wrath rolled across Him.
  • 39:43 - 39:46
    He drank it.
  • 39:46 - 39:48
    It crushed Him.
  • 39:48 - 39:49
It wasn't a day in the park.
  • 39:49 - 39:52
It crushed Him. Every bit of it.
  • 39:52 - 39:55
    He drank it dry.
  • 39:55 - 39:58
Him coming up out of that grave
  • 39:58 - 40:02
proved Him to be the Son of God with power.
  • 40:02 - 40:03
    That's what you need.
  • 40:03 - 40:05
That's the only place of safety.
  • 40:05 - 40:06
This isn't a mere man we're talking about.
  • 40:06 - 40:08
He's Lord. But He's more than Lord.
  • 40:08 - 40:09
He is the Son of God.
  • 40:09 - 40:13
"My Lord and my God," is what Thomas proclaimed.
  • 40:13 - 40:14
    That's what you need.
  • 40:14 - 40:16
That's your only place of safety.
  • 40:16 - 40:19
    There is no other place.
  • 40:19 - 40:23
    And I'll tell you this,
  • 40:23 - 40:27
everyone who calls on the name of the Lord,
  • 40:27 - 40:32
as old Tyndale said, will be safe.
  • 40:32 - 40:33
Oh, we've got to find a place of safety.
  • 40:33 - 40:35
This is why in the Old Testament,
  • 40:35 - 40:37
they came up under the priesthood
  • 40:37 - 40:38
and they're establishing the Mosaic covenant,
  • 40:38 - 40:41
they had these cities of refuge.
  • 40:41 - 40:43
What were they a picture of?
  • 40:43 - 40:44
    Christ.
  • 40:44 - 40:45
    You need refuge.
  • 40:45 - 40:46
    You're not safe.
  • 40:46 - 40:47
    You're out on the plain.
  • 40:47 - 40:48
Flee! The wrath of God is coming!
  • 40:48 - 40:51
You're out there in Sodom and Gomorrah.
  • 40:51 - 40:53
You're in the City of Destruction.
  • 40:53 - 40:57
You've got to flee. You've got to run.
  • 40:57 - 41:00
You say, "but does that include me?"
  • 41:00 - 41:02
    Everyone who calls.
  • 41:02 - 41:03
It includes you if you call.
  • 41:03 - 41:05
You say, "you don't know my sin."
  • 41:05 - 41:08
    Everyone who calls.
  • 41:08 - 41:10
Christ says, "Him that comes to Me,
  • 41:10 - 41:14
I will in no way cast out."
  • 41:14 - 41:15
    Look.
  • 41:15 - 41:20
    We're in a day,
  • 41:20 - 41:23
    God has moved some,
  • 41:23 - 41:24
    you've got your Jonathan Diaz,
  • 41:24 - 41:27
    pulled into the Kingdom.
  • 41:27 - 41:29
    Lauren Griffin, pulled in.
  • 41:29 - 41:33
    Stacy Bell, pulled in.
  • 41:33 - 41:36
Why would you stay where it's not safe
  • 41:36 - 41:38
    when others are coming in?
  • 41:38 - 41:42
    Why stay there?
  • 41:42 - 41:43
    Repent.
  • 41:43 - 41:44
    And turn from it all.
  • 41:44 - 41:45
    Let it all go.
  • 41:45 - 41:47
    Bow the knee to Christ.
  • 41:47 - 41:50
    Come to Him.
  • 41:50 - 41:53
I mean, He has proved Himself worthy.
  • 41:53 - 41:57
He has proved Himself to be the Son of God.
  • 41:57 - 41:59
    And I'll tell you this,
  • 41:59 - 42:01
you come to Him, and do you know what verse 12 says?
  • 42:01 - 42:03
He'll bestow on you all the riches...
  • 42:03 - 42:05
you know how I've described this,
  • 42:05 - 42:07
and you go out to the very horizons
  • 42:07 - 42:08
    all the way around.
  • 42:08 - 42:09
You see this great big floodgate.
  • 42:09 - 42:12
It's just bulging under the wrath of God.
  • 42:12 - 42:15
I'll tell you, you come to Christ,
  • 42:15 - 42:16
and now all of a sudden,
  • 42:16 - 42:19
    you've got a floodgate - it's bulging.
  • 42:19 - 42:22
It's bulging with the riches of Christ,
  • 42:22 - 42:24
with the inheritance, with the love of God,
  • 42:24 - 42:28
and in Christ it's ready to burst upon your head.
  • 42:28 - 42:33
    All for good.
  • 42:33 - 42:36
    Folks, you're not safe.
  • 42:36 - 42:38
Or you've got a false profession and you know it.
  • 42:38 - 42:42
You know the thing is not solid.
  • 42:42 - 42:45
    Call. Call fervently. Call earnestly.
  • 42:45 - 42:47
    Call now.
  • 42:47 - 42:51
Call upon Him until your salvation is certain.
  • 42:51 - 42:54
    Call till you find Christ.
  • 42:54 - 42:58
    Call.
  • 42:58 - 43:00
    Sinner, you are not safe.
  • 43:00 - 43:01
    Amen.
