MRUniversity - The opening slide
-
0:02 - 0:04This is our opening slide
for all of the lectures. -
0:04 - 0:05So what does it mean?
-
0:07 - 0:08It's called Incheon Bridge,
-
0:08 - 0:11and it's located
in South Korea, near Seoul. -
0:11 - 0:14This bridge was finished in 2009,
-
0:14 - 0:17and now it connects
the airport serving Seoul -
0:17 - 0:19to what's called Songdo Business District,
-
0:19 - 0:22which was built on reclaimed land.
-
0:22 - 0:25The private contract owner
behind the bridge was Samsung. -
0:27 - 0:29One reason we chose this particular image
-
0:29 - 0:32is simply that South Korea
has itself been successful -
0:32 - 0:34in terms of economic development.
-
0:35 - 0:39When it comes to development,
Alex and I are very much optimists. -
0:39 - 0:41But look more carefully at this picture,
-
0:41 - 0:44which was taken before
the bridge was finished. -
0:44 - 0:46You can see the bridge is incomplete.
-
0:46 - 0:51We view economic development
as something which is always in process. -
0:51 - 0:56Most importantly, this image reflects
an underlying philosophy of education, -
0:56 - 1:00namely that we should always be trying
to bridge gaps in our knowledge.
