Biblical Counsel to Walk in Sexual Purity - Jesse Barrington
-
0:01 - 0:03As you counsel people on
the topic of sexual purity, -
0:03 - 0:05what advice do you find yourself giving
-
0:05 - 0:07time and time again to help believers
-
0:07 - 0:09walk in purity?
-
0:09 - 0:11Jesse: One of the areas I begin with
-
0:11 - 0:13in talking about sexual purity
-
0:13 - 0:16is in the area of understanding
-
0:16 - 0:20the depth of the gospel
-
0:20 - 0:22and the blood of Christ to forgive
-
0:22 - 0:25even in the area of sexual impurity.
-
0:25 - 0:27So often, I see so many people
-
0:27 - 0:30who struggle in this area
-
0:30 - 0:31and are convinced -
-
0:31 - 0:33I cannot come back to God;
-
0:33 - 0:35I can't come back to Christ
-
0:35 - 0:38because I've done this this many times.
-
0:38 - 0:42And often, I'll bring them to
David's psalm of confession. -
0:42 - 0:44In verse 1, David says,
-
0:44 - 0:47"Have mercy on me, O God,
-
0:47 - 0:50according to Your steadfast love."
-
0:50 - 0:52And I'll just sit there
with people sometimes -
0:52 - 0:55and go over that again and again.
-
0:55 - 0:58You have to believe that
God is able to forgive, -
0:58 - 1:01but you have to believe
that He's willing to forgive. -
1:01 - 1:03And we have to remember the basis
-
1:03 - 1:04of His forgiveness.
-
1:04 - 1:07It is not our performance.
-
1:07 - 1:09So when a brother or a sister struggle
-
1:09 - 1:11in the area of sexual purity,
-
1:11 - 1:15so often I see them
trying to earn their way -
1:15 - 1:18back into a right standing with God.
-
1:18 - 1:21Whether it's: I've got to be
more committed next time. -
1:21 - 1:24Or, my repentance needs
to be more perfect. -
1:24 - 1:27And I remind them you have to understand
-
1:27 - 1:31the basis of God's mercy is His love.
-
1:31 - 1:35And the basis of God's
love is not performance. -
1:35 - 1:37And I'm not saying God's indifferent
-
1:37 - 1:38to our repentance
-
1:38 - 1:42or continuing in sin
that grace may abound. -
1:42 - 1:44But I see men and women
-
1:44 - 1:47that have genuine marks of conversion
-
1:47 - 1:49struggle in this area.
-
1:49 - 1:51And when they do sin,
-
1:51 - 1:55we'll spend sometimes days or weeks
-
1:55 - 2:00laying around, if you will,
in the guilt of the sin. -
2:00 - 2:02There needs to be an urgency
-
2:02 - 2:04of coming back to God
-
2:04 - 2:07believing that in Christ,
if they confess their sins, -
2:07 - 2:09He's faithful and just to forgive them
-
2:09 - 2:12and cleanse them from all unrighteousness.
-
2:12 - 2:16In regards to proactively here -
-
2:16 - 2:18I think there's a proactive
and a reactive sense -
2:18 - 2:21of how we guard against sexual impurity.
-
2:21 - 2:25I think of the verse "Flee youthful lust."
-
2:25 - 2:27So, I'll say to the men sometimes,
-
2:27 - 2:29"Hey, flee youthful lusts.
-
2:29 - 2:32There's one way you can
guard against sexual impurity. -
2:32 - 2:34And they'll say,
"Amen. Flee youthful lust." -
2:34 - 2:37But I'll say, "What's
the rest of the verse?" -
2:37 - 2:39In fact, we were in a men's meeting once
-
2:39 - 2:41on the topic of sexual purity,
-
2:41 - 2:44and I stood up and I said,
"Flee youthful lusts." -
2:44 - 2:45And they all said, "Amen!"
-
2:45 - 2:49And I say, "Men, what's the
second half of the verse?" -
2:49 - 2:50Pursue.
-
2:50 - 2:52In other words, there is a putting off.
-
2:52 - 2:54There is a guarding of the heart
-
2:54 - 2:55where we do flee.
-
2:55 - 2:58We obey Proverbs 7.
-
2:58 - 2:59We don't go on the corner.
-
2:59 - 3:02We don't tempt ourselves to be tempted.
-
3:02 - 3:03We guard those things.
-
3:03 - 3:04We run from those things.
-
3:04 - 3:06But there's the other side of the battle
-
3:06 - 3:08against sexual impurity,
-
3:08 - 3:10which is the pursuing.
-
3:10 - 3:14It is looking. It is the
putting on of Christ. -
3:14 - 3:17Inevitably, James, what I find
-
3:17 - 3:19in these areas when people have given in
-
3:19 - 3:20to sexual temptation,
-
3:20 - 3:23is that they've stopped nurturing
-
3:23 - 3:24and nourishing their soul;
-
3:24 - 3:26the guarding of their heart;
-
3:26 - 3:28the reading of the Word;
the meditation of the Word. -
3:28 - 3:30As the old saying goes,
-
3:30 - 3:35the Word keeps you from sin,
and sin keeps you from the Word. -
3:35 - 3:38And the majority of time I find is
-
3:38 - 3:40they're trying to practice
-
3:40 - 3:41the guarding of things,
-
3:41 - 3:44but they're not fulfilling the pursuing
-
3:44 - 3:46of righteousness, love, and Christ.
-
3:46 - 3:49And if your heart is not satisfied
-
3:49 - 3:52in treasuring and savoring Jesus Christ,
-
3:52 - 3:55it will look somewhere else to worship.
-
3:55 - 3:58So it's not just
putting off; it's putting on. -
3:58 - 4:00Question: When someone comes to you,
-
4:00 - 4:01how do you discern,
-
4:01 - 4:03is this a true Christian who's struggling
-
4:03 - 4:05or is this someone who is lost?
-
4:05 - 4:08Or how necessary is it
to even discern that? -
4:08 - 4:11Jesse: I look where their struggle is
-
4:11 - 4:13regarding their sin.
-
4:13 - 4:16In other words, is it a godly sorrow?
-
4:16 - 4:18Remember Paul in Corinthians speaks about
-
4:18 - 4:21a worldly sorrow versus a godly sorrow.
-
4:21 - 4:23The worldly sorrow -
-
4:23 - 4:25you can take an atheist who's caught
-
4:25 - 4:27with pornography.
-
4:27 - 4:29There's embarrassment. There's shame.
-
4:29 - 4:30There's guilt.
-
4:30 - 4:32What is my wife going to say?
What are my kids going to say? -
4:32 - 4:34What are my co-workers going to think?
-
4:34 - 4:37Well, that's not godly sorrow.
-
4:37 - 4:38Now the genuine Christian
-
4:38 - 4:40will think those same thoughts,
-
4:40 - 4:43but they will have a Godward sorrow
-
4:43 - 4:45regarding their sin.
-
4:45 - 4:47And so I'm looking at where is
-
4:47 - 4:50the sorrow for sin?
-
4:50 - 4:52Is it merely for the embarrassment
-
4:52 - 4:54of what they've just done?
-
4:54 - 4:56Or is it a Godward -
-
4:56 - 4:59"Against You and You only
have I sinned, O God, -
4:59 - 5:01and done what is evil in Your sight."
-
5:01 - 5:04And so I think regeneration produces
-
5:04 - 5:07a love for God, a reverence for God,
-
5:07 - 5:10an affection for God and His glory.
-
5:10 - 5:13And so when we sin, we are sorrowful
-
5:13 - 5:15not only for what we have done
-
5:15 - 5:16and how we'll look before others,
-
5:16 - 5:19but we're sorrowful for
what we've done to God; -
5:19 - 5:20the robbing of His glory,
-
5:20 - 5:22and against Him have we sinned.
-
5:22 - 5:23So that's an indicator.
-
5:23 - 5:28Where the trajectory of
their sin and their sorrow? -
