Biblical Counsel to Walk in Sexual Purity - Jesse Barrington

  • 0:01 - 0:03
    As you counsel people on
    the topic of sexual purity,
  • 0:03 - 0:05
what advice do you find yourself giving
  • 0:05 - 0:07
time and time again to help believers
  • 0:07 - 0:09
    walk in purity?
  • 0:09 - 0:11
Jesse: One of the areas I begin with
  • 0:11 - 0:13
    in talking about sexual purity
  • 0:13 - 0:16
is in the area of understanding
  • 0:16 - 0:20
    the depth of the gospel
  • 0:20 - 0:22
and the blood of Christ to forgive
  • 0:22 - 0:25
even in the area of sexual impurity.
  • 0:25 - 0:27
So often, I see so many people
  • 0:27 - 0:30
    who struggle in this area
  • 0:30 - 0:31
    and are convinced -
  • 0:31 - 0:33
    I cannot come back to God;
  • 0:33 - 0:35
I can't come back to Christ
  • 0:35 - 0:38
because I've done this this many times.
  • 0:38 - 0:42
And often, I'll bring them to
    David's psalm of confession.
  • 0:42 - 0:44
    In verse 1, David says,
  • 0:44 - 0:47
"Have mercy on me, O God,
  • 0:47 - 0:50
    according to Your steadfast love."
  • 0:50 - 0:52
    And I'll just sit there
    with people sometimes
  • 0:52 - 0:55
and go over that again and again.
  • 0:55 - 0:58
    You have to believe that
    God is able to forgive,
  • 0:58 - 1:01
    but you have to believe
    that He's willing to forgive.
  • 1:01 - 1:03
And we have to remember the basis
  • 1:03 - 1:04
    of His forgiveness.
  • 1:04 - 1:07
    It is not our performance.
  • 1:07 - 1:09
So when a brother or a sister struggle
  • 1:09 - 1:11
in the area of sexual purity,
  • 1:11 - 1:15
    so often I see them
    trying to earn their way
  • 1:15 - 1:18
back into a right standing with God.
  • 1:18 - 1:21
Whether it's: I've got to be
    more committed next time.
  • 1:21 - 1:24
    Or, my repentance needs
    to be more perfect.
  • 1:24 - 1:27
And I remind them you have to understand
  • 1:27 - 1:31
the basis of God's mercy is His love.
  • 1:31 - 1:35
    And the basis of God's
    love is not performance.
  • 1:35 - 1:37
And I'm not saying God's indifferent
  • 1:37 - 1:38
    to our repentance
  • 1:38 - 1:42
    or continuing in sin
    that grace may abound.
  • 1:42 - 1:44
But I see men and women
  • 1:44 - 1:47
that have genuine marks of conversion
  • 1:47 - 1:49
    struggle in this area.
  • 1:49 - 1:51
    And when they do sin,
  • 1:51 - 1:55
we'll spend sometimes days or weeks
  • 1:55 - 2:00
    laying around, if you will,
in the guilt of the sin.
  • 2:00 - 2:02
There needs to be an urgency
  • 2:02 - 2:04
    of coming back to God
  • 2:04 - 2:07
    believing that in Christ,
    if they confess their sins,
  • 2:07 - 2:09
He's faithful and just to forgive them
  • 2:09 - 2:12
and cleanse them from all unrighteousness.
  • 2:12 - 2:16
In regards to proactively here -
  • 2:16 - 2:18
    I think there's a proactive
    and a reactive sense
  • 2:18 - 2:21
of how we guard against sexual impurity.
  • 2:21 - 2:25
I think of the verse "Flee youthful lust."
  • 2:25 - 2:27
So, I'll say to the men sometimes,
  • 2:27 - 2:29
    "Hey, flee youthful lusts.
  • 2:29 - 2:32
    There's one way you can
    guard against sexual impurity.
  • 2:32 - 2:34
    And they'll say,
    "Amen. Flee youthful lust."
  • 2:34 - 2:37
    But I'll say, "What's
    the rest of the verse?"
  • 2:37 - 2:39
In fact, we were in a men's meeting once
  • 2:39 - 2:41
on the topic of sexual purity,
  • 2:41 - 2:44
and I stood up and I said,
    "Flee youthful lusts."
  • 2:44 - 2:45
    And they all said, "Amen!"
  • 2:45 - 2:49
And I say, "Men, what's the
    second half of the verse?"
  • 2:49 - 2:50
    Pursue.
  • 2:50 - 2:52
In other words, there is a putting off.
  • 2:52 - 2:54
There is a guarding of the heart
  • 2:54 - 2:55
    where we do flee.
  • 2:55 - 2:58
    We obey Proverbs 7.
  • 2:58 - 2:59
We don't go on the corner.
  • 2:59 - 3:02
We don't tempt ourselves to be tempted.
  • 3:02 - 3:03
    We guard those things.
  • 3:03 - 3:04
    We run from those things.
  • 3:04 - 3:06
But there's the other side of the battle
  • 3:06 - 3:08
    against sexual impurity,
  • 3:08 - 3:10
    which is the pursuing.
  • 3:10 - 3:14
It is looking. It is the
    putting on of Christ.
  • 3:14 - 3:17
    Inevitably, James, what I find
  • 3:17 - 3:19
in these areas when people have given in
  • 3:19 - 3:20
    to sexual temptation,
  • 3:20 - 3:23
    is that they've stopped nurturing
  • 3:23 - 3:24
    and nourishing their soul;
  • 3:24 - 3:26
    the guarding of their heart;
  • 3:26 - 3:28
    the reading of the Word;
    the meditation of the Word.
  • 3:28 - 3:30
    As the old saying goes,
  • 3:30 - 3:35
the Word keeps you from sin,
and sin keeps you from the Word.
  • 3:35 - 3:38
And the majority of time I find is
  • 3:38 - 3:40
    they're trying to practice
  • 3:40 - 3:41
    the guarding of things,
  • 3:41 - 3:44
but they're not fulfilling the pursuing
  • 3:44 - 3:46
    of righteousness, love, and Christ.
  • 3:46 - 3:49
And if your heart is not satisfied
  • 3:49 - 3:52
in treasuring and savoring Jesus Christ,
  • 3:52 - 3:55
it will look somewhere else to worship.
  • 3:55 - 3:58
    So it's not just
    putting off; it's putting on.
  • 3:58 - 4:00
Question: When someone comes to you,
  • 4:00 - 4:01
    how do you discern,
  • 4:01 - 4:03
is this a true Christian who's struggling
  • 4:03 - 4:05
or is this someone who is lost?
  • 4:05 - 4:08
    Or how necessary is it
    to even discern that?
  • 4:08 - 4:11
Jesse: I look where their struggle is
  • 4:11 - 4:13
    regarding their sin.
  • 4:13 - 4:16
In other words, is it a godly sorrow?
  • 4:16 - 4:18
Remember Paul in Corinthians speaks about
  • 4:18 - 4:21
a worldly sorrow versus a godly sorrow.
  • 4:21 - 4:23
    The worldly sorrow -
  • 4:23 - 4:25
you can take an atheist who's caught
  • 4:25 - 4:27
    with pornography.
  • 4:27 - 4:29
    There's embarrassment. There's shame.
  • 4:29 - 4:30
    There's guilt.
  • 4:30 - 4:32
What is my wife going to say?
What are my kids going to say?
  • 4:32 - 4:34
What are my co-workers going to think?
  • 4:34 - 4:37
    Well, that's not godly sorrow.
  • 4:37 - 4:38
    Now the genuine Christian
  • 4:38 - 4:40
    will think those same thoughts,
  • 4:40 - 4:43
but they will have a Godward sorrow
  • 4:43 - 4:45
    regarding their sin.
  • 4:45 - 4:47
And so I'm looking at where is
  • 4:47 - 4:50
    the sorrow for sin?
  • 4:50 - 4:52
Is it merely for the embarrassment
  • 4:52 - 4:54
    of what they've just done?
  • 4:54 - 4:56
Or is it a Godward -
  • 4:56 - 4:59
    "Against You and You only
    have I sinned, O God,
  • 4:59 - 5:01
and done what is evil in Your sight."
  • 5:01 - 5:04
And so I think regeneration produces
  • 5:04 - 5:07
a love for God, a reverence for God,
  • 5:07 - 5:10
an affection for God and His glory.
  • 5:10 - 5:13
And so when we sin, we are sorrowful
  • 5:13 - 5:15
not only for what we have done
  • 5:15 - 5:16
and how we'll look before others,
  • 5:16 - 5:19
    but we're sorrowful for
    what we've done to God;
  • 5:19 - 5:20
    the robbing of His glory,
  • 5:20 - 5:22
and against Him have we sinned.
  • 5:22 - 5:23
    So that's an indicator.
  • 5:23 - 5:28
    Where the trajectory of
    their sin and their sorrow?
