Energy 2.1

  • 0:03 - 0:06
    In this lesson, we use
the Brain Dance as a warm-up.
  • 0:06 - 0:08
The Brain Dance is a series of movements
  • 0:08 - 0:11
    based on the developmental patterns
    that babies go through
  • 0:11 - 0:12
in their first year of life.
  • 0:12 - 0:14
    So can you tell me
what's the first thing you do
  • 0:14 - 0:16
    when you're born?
  • 0:16 - 0:18
    - Ava?
    - (Ava) You cry.
  • 0:18 - 0:21
What do you do just before you cry?
  • 0:21 - 0:22
    - You breathe.
    - You breathe.
  • 0:22 - 0:24
    A one-week-old, two-week-old,
  • 0:24 - 0:28
    they startle-- they open
    their bodies like this.
  • 0:28 - 0:30
And when you put them on their tummies--
  • 0:30 - 0:32
    have you ever seen put
a little baby on its tummy?
  • 0:32 - 0:33
    It's called tummy time!
  • 0:33 - 0:34
    Yeah, tummy time.
  • 0:34 - 0:36
    They'll curl into a ball.
  • 0:36 - 0:37
    They'll bring their knees up.
  • 0:37 - 0:40
So babies will move their arms,
    and they'll move their legs.
  • 0:40 - 0:43
    But when they're really little,
like four or five months old,
  • 0:43 - 0:45
    they're not usually crawling yet.
  • 0:45 - 0:47
    - (children) Yeah.
    - Yeah, so they're not crawling yet.
  • 0:47 - 0:50
And then they'll move one side,
and they'll move the other side.
  • 0:50 - 0:52
    This is all while
    they're on their tummies.
  • 0:52 - 0:55
    They can't quite figure out
how to get them going at the same time,
  • 0:55 - 0:57
    but they'll move one side
and they'll move the other side,
  • 0:57 - 1:00
when they're lying on their tummies, yeah?
  • 1:00 - 1:04
And then, all of a sudden,
they start to learn how to use
  • 1:04 - 1:06
their right and left side together.
  • 1:06 - 1:08
    So what we're going
to do when I say, "Go"--
  • 1:08 - 1:09
    you're going to stand up,
  • 1:09 - 1:11
    you're going to find
your own spot in the room,
  • 1:11 - 1:13

    a little Brain Dance warm-up
  • 1:13 - 1:15
of all those little movement patterns.
  • 1:15 - 1:16
    When you get there, freeze.
  • 1:16 - 1:19
    So we're going to alternate
    between smooth movements
  • 1:19 - 1:22
    and sharp movements,
as we do this Brain Dance.
  • 1:24 - 1:26
So we're going to start by breathing.
  • 1:27 - 1:29
