Guitar Quick Tip #13: Use Volume To Clean Up The Dirt (Guitar Lesson QT-013)
-
0:05 - 0:07Hi. Howya doin'? Justin here
-
0:07 - 0:08with another quick tip for you,
-
0:08 - 0:10and today we are talking about
-
0:10 - 0:14using volume to clean up your dirty sound.
-
0:14 - 0:15Now, the volume I'm talking about
-
0:15 - 0:16isn't the actual volume.
-
0:16 - 0:19It's the volume control on your guitar.
-
0:19 - 0:20Now, it's kinda obvious
-
0:20 - 0:22to think that the volume control on the guitar
-
0:22 - 0:24controls the volume, right?
-
0:24 - 0:24It's in the name.
-
0:24 - 0:25It seems pretty obvious, but
-
0:25 - 0:27when you are using distortion,
-
0:27 - 0:29the volume control for the first part
-
0:29 - 0:32doesn't seem to alter much in the volume department,
-
0:32 - 0:35but it does alter stuff in the gain department.
-
0:35 - 0:37So, I'm using here a Suhr Badger 30
-
0:37 - 0:38with a little bit of gain on the amp
-
0:38 - 0:42and an Analog Man King of Tone pedal.
-
0:42 - 0:43and I've got it as a crunchy sound.
-
0:43 - 0:49(plays)
-
0:49 - 0:52It's not real heavy, but, you know, heavy enough.
-
0:52 - 0:53But if i just back that volume off a little bit,
-
0:53 - 0:55to, like, 6.5 or 7
-
0:55 - 1:04(plays)
-
1:04 - 1:05it's a lot cleaner.
-
1:05 - 1:06Like just that little bit.
-
1:06 - 1:14(plays)
-
1:14 - 1:16It's almost the same volume, not quite
-
1:16 - 1:18but almost the same.
-
1:18 - 1:20And it's the kinda thing where if you are playing
-
1:20 - 1:21in a band,
-
1:21 - 1:22particularly if you have a front-of-house engineer,
-
1:22 - 1:24it can be a great trick to be just backing
-
1:24 - 1:27your volume off a little bit for your rhythm guitar
-
1:27 - 1:28and when it comes time to do the solo
-
1:28 - 1:30to crank your volume control up
-
1:30 - 1:31instead of having to run round
-
1:31 - 1:32and jumping on a load of pedals.
-
1:32 - 1:34You know,if you're on your own
-
1:34 - 1:35and you don't have front-of-house there
-
1:35 - 1:37you probably need some sort of booster
-
1:37 - 1:38or to use a different pedal.
-
1:38 - 1:40But it's a really really useful tip
-
1:40 - 1:43and it's not just about the actual volume thing
-
1:43 - 1:45It's really about tone.
-
1:45 - 1:48It's really a lot to do with the tone you are getting.
-
1:48 - 1:49You know, theres a lot of times when
-
1:49 - 1:51if you are playing and it sounds
-
1:51 - 1:52a little bit crunchy,
-
1:52 - 1:54rather than jumping down and changing your pedal
-
1:54 - 1:56or your amp setting, you might want to try
-
1:56 - 1:58backing the volume off a little bit first.
-
1:58 - 2:00You know, a lot of times
-
2:00 - 2:01particularly in rock,
-
2:01 - 2:04people tend to over distort stuff
-
2:04 - 2:06Like ACDC, the guitar sound is
-
2:06 - 2:08not very distorted at all.
-
2:08 - 2:11It's just a really loud amplifier
-
2:11 - 2:14and you get a lot of this kind of natural disortion
-
2:14 - 2:16that happens but if you listen to the sound closely,
-
2:16 - 2:19it's not disorted, it's not gaining
-
2:19 - 2:21like a - I don't know - a Joe Satriani
-
2:21 - 2:23heavy rock sound or whatever.
-
2:23 - 2:24They're completely different.
-
2:24 - 2:27Now, important here - I've talked about
-
2:27 - 2:29before about exploring your gear
-
2:29 - 2:30Different guitars and different amps
-
2:30 - 2:34and different pedals will all function slightly differently.
-
2:34 - 2:37So, like, Gibson guitars have got a quite
-
2:37 - 2:39a different effect when you turn the volume down.
-
2:39 - 2:41They don't seem to drop as much as quickly
-
2:41 - 2:44and then it seems to drop off a little more sudden.
-
2:44 - 2:47And so the Strats kind of work good for this.
-
2:47 - 2:48Different amplifiers will work different
-
2:48 - 2:52and different pedals will have a different effect.
-
2:52 - 2:53depending on what pedals you've got on.
-
2:53 - 2:55So, this is the kind of thing you need to explore
-
2:55 - 2:56on your gear.
-
2:56 - 2:58Like I've said to you, on this Strat
-
2:58 - 2:59it's like 6.5, 7 is where you get
-
2:59 - 3:01that kind of nice break off
-
3:01 - 3:04and its not dirty anymore - it's not as dirty.
-
3:04 - 3:05It's kind of a bit cleaner
-
3:05 - 3:06and kind of crunchy sounding
-
3:06 - 3:08rather than dirty sounding.
-
3:08 - 3:10But it 's different on all the different guitars
-
3:10 - 3:13so it's worth exploring on your instrument
-
3:13 - 3:15and seeing how it effects your sound.
-
3:15 - 3:18I hope that helps you with your tone journey
-
3:18 - 3:20I'll see you for lots more lessons very soon.
-
3:20 - 3:21Take care of yourselves.
-
3:21 - 3:24Bye Bye
