Emma: Please rise.
-
["Letters for Clara" continues playing]
-
Emma: Thank you. You may be seated.
-
Welcome. Thank you all for gathering
-
here to celebrate the joyous union of
-
Finn and Jana.
-
We ask that you be truly present for
-
their ceremony and silence your
-
cellphones as you witness the beginning
-
of their marriage.
-
Alternately, please go ahead and turn them
-
all the way up so that we know who to
-
blame when they go off.
-
Crowd: [laughter]
-
Emma: Finn and Jana, today we
-
celebrate the power of your love and the
-
strength of your bond.
-
Before we begin, take a moment to look
-
around at all of the friendly faces before
-
you and know that we are all here to
-
offer you our love, support, and
-
encouragement as you embark on this
-
journey together.
-
Beau Taplin wrote, "Home is not where
-
you are from, it is where you belong.
-
Some of us travel the whole world to
-
find it. Others, find it in a person.". You
-
found home in one another when you
-
met.
-
As we gather here in the spirit of
-
merriment, let us also recognize the
-
solemnity present in this moment.
-
Marriage is a profound commitment,
-
one worthy of reverence.
-
Robert Fulghum worded this balance of
-
gravity and levity beautifully.
-
"You have known each other from the
-
first glance of acquaintance to this point
-
of commitment. At some point, you
-
decided to marry. From that moment of
-
yes, to this moment of yes, indeed, you
-
have been making promises and agreements
-
in an informal way. All of those
-
conversations that were held in a car, or
-
over a meal, or during long walks – all
-
those conversations that began with, “When
-
we're married”, and continued with “I
-
will." and “you will” and “we will”.
-
Those late night talks that included
-
“someday” and “somehow” and “maybe”
-
- and all those promises that are
-
unspoken matters of the heart. All these
-
common things, and more, are the real
-
process of a wedding.
-
The symbolic vows that you are about to
-
make are a way of saying to one
-
another, “You know all those things we've
-
promised, and hoped, and dreamed -
-
well, I meant it all, every word."
-
Look at one another and remember this
-
moment in time.
-
Before this moment you have been many
-
things to one another – acquaintance,
-
friend, companion, lover, dancing
-
partner, and even teacher, for you have
-
learned much from one another these
-
past few years. Now you shall say a
-
few words that will take you across a
-
threshold of life, and you shall be married"
-
Jana and Finn, I believe you've each
-
written your own vows.
-
Finn, would you like to go first?
-
Finn: Sure, uhm.
-
It's my d&d book.
-
It's got campaign stuff in it right now.
-
One of your favorite poets wrote; "Who
-
can say where the road goes, where the
-
day flows, only time."
-
Crowd: [laughter]
-
Finn: It is so true though. No matter
-
what we do - or how much we wish -
-
time is steady and everflowing.
-
Despite this, you are a constant.
-
When we met my life was chaotic but
-
you kept showing up.
-
I don't remember whole months in the
-
beginning of our relationship but I do
-
remember you.
-
Your smile, and your face, and cheesy
-
crap like; the sunlight in your hair or
-
Ursula curled up on your chest.
-
Crowd: [soft laughter]
-
Finn: I want to be that constant for you
-
too. I don't know where the road goes,
-
or where the day flows but I do know I'll
-
take every step with you.
-
I promise in the unpredictable chaos of
-
life and love and time I will support you.
-
I promise always to make time for couch
-
cuddles and coffee made from scratch
-
and even back rubs.
-
I promise to love you through every twist
-
and turn of our road.
-
From the overgrown rough parts to the
-
well maintained pothole-less parts.
-
As long as I am traveling the road with
-
you, it will be a road worth traveling.
-
Emma: Jana?
-
[sound of book falling]
-
Jana: So Dante once wrote; "In that
-
book that is my memory, On the first
-
page that is the chapter when I first met
-
you, Appear, 'Here begins a new life'.”
-
And this has never been as much as the
-
moment I met you.
-
As we continue deeper into our new
-
life together I promise to love you until
-
I am old and gray - through all time and
-
space - with no spoilers.
-
Crowd: [soft laughter]
-
Jana: I promise to take each day as a
-
new adventure together in love and life
-
with you.
-
Even when that means cat boxes or
-
telling the Bees 'no'.
-
I can't wait to see what our life together
-
brings in the future but I can't imagine
-
taking this path anywhere with anyone
-
else but you.
-
So, vivamus, meus Finneus, amemus.
-
Quando to Gaius, ego Gaia.
-
Crowd: [boisterous laughter]
-
Jana: Not yet.
-
Crowd: [laughter continues]
-
Emma: You two can join hands now.
-
Finn, do you take Jana, as your partner
-
and companion?
-
Do you promise to share their laughter
-
during the good times and wipe their
-
tears during the bad times?
-
Finn: I do.
-
Emma: Jana, do you take Finn as your
-
partner and companion?
-
Do you promise to share his laughter
-
during the good times and wipe his
-
tears during the bad from this day
-
forward?
-
Jana: I do.
-
Emma: Will the ring bearer please come
-
forward?
-
The ring symbolizes the unbroken circle of
-
endless love.
-
It is worn on the third finger because of
-
the ancient Greek belief that a vein from
-
that finger is connected directly to the
-
heart.
-
Thus symbolizing the depth and sincerity
-
of love.
-
May your rings always be the symbol of
-
your unbroken ring of love.
-
Love freely given, has no beginning and no
-
end.
-
Love freely given, has no giver and no
-
receiver.
-
You are each the giver, and each the
-
receiver.
-
May your rings always call to mind the
-
freedom and the power of this love.
-
Please repeat after me:
-
With this ring I commit my love to you for
-
all time.
-
Finn: With this ring I commit my love to
-
you for all time.
-
Jana: With this ring I commit my life to
-
you for all time.
-
Emma: Giving you all that I am and all
-
that I am, and all that I will be.
-
Finn: Giving you all that I am and all
-
that I will be.
-
Jana: Giving you all that I am and all
-
that I will be.
-
Emma: Family and friends - by the power
-
vested in me, by the state of Georgia; I
-
now formally pronounce Finn and Jana to
-
be married.
-
You may seal your vows with a kiss.
-
Crowd: [cheers and claps]
-
Crowd: [continues clapping]
-
Emma: Out of this tangled world these two
-
souls have joined together, bound with the
-
swift, sure, bonds of love.
-
Their destiny shall now be woven of one
-
design.
-
Their perils and their joys shall be
-
shared.
-
As they increase the mutual understanding
-
they and their joys stand victoriously
-
against the storm of circumstances which
-
beats impartially at all our doors.
-
From the rich encouragement of their
-
affection may they complete the unfinished
-
pattern of their true selves.
-
Even as they have chosen each other from
-
the world's multitudes, so let the days
-
and years deepen the joy of that choice
-
and keep it enduringly true.
-
With abiding love and support we send you
-
forth on your journey of life together.
-
Go and live it gladly.
-
["Valentine" by Kina Grannis plays while
-
crowd claps and cheers enthusiastically]
-
Song: It's a special day
-
We should celebrate and appreciate
-
That you and me found something pretty
-
neat
-
And I know some say this day is arbitrary
-
Emma: You're all invited to join us in the
-
ballroom for cocktails and food.
-
Song: But it's a good excuse
-
That I love to use baby I know what to do
-
baby I,
-
I will love you, I'll love you, I'll love you,
-
[song continues]
