Episode #027: Matthew Ritchie discusses his upcoming exhibition "The Morning Line" (2008) in his New York studio, with animated architectural schematics of the installation. "The Morning Line" will be on view October 2, 2008 - January 11, 2009 at the Centro Andaluz de Arte Contemporáneo in Seville, Spain, as part of the 3rd Bienal Internacional de Arte Contemporáneo de Seville.

Matthew Ritchie's artistic mission has been no less ambitious than an attempt to represent the entire universe and the structures of knowledge and belief that we use to understand and visualize it. Ritchie's encyclopedic project (continually expanding and evolving like the universe itself) stems from his imagination, and is cataloged in a conceptual chart replete with allusions drawn from Judeo-Christian religion, occult practices, Gnostic traditions, and scientific elements and principles.

Matthew Ritchie is featured in the Season 3 (2005) episode Structures of the Art:21—Art in the Twenty-First Century television series on PBS.

בזמן האחרון, אני חוקר את הרעיון

של איך להביא ציור לתוך הסביבה,

ובמובן מסוים, כשהתחלתי לעבוד יותר עם אדריכלים, ומוסדות גדולים

התברר לי שבמעורבות האדריכלית היא חלק חשוב בתהליך.

באותו זמן, רציתי לשמר את הרעיון הזה כי הוא מהותי מאוד בעבודה שלי-

הרעיון של טעות, מפגש אקראי.

וכמובן, שני הדברים הם שונים מאוד, כי הארכיטקטורה מתמקדת

ומוודאה שכל דבר יהיה תמיד זהה, בכל פעם - הבניין לא יפול.

הברזים עובדים, החלונות תקינים ... הכל צריך להיות מאוד מסודר.

אז יצירה כמו "קו הבוקר", עוסקת בדינמיקה החזקה בין

כוחות מקריים שייתכן שניתן לשלוט בהם בתוך גלריה, וכוחות מקריים שאין לשלוט בהם כלל,

כמו גשם, רוח, סחף...

וציפיות גדולות של מוסדות גדולים, לקבוצות גדולות של אנשים.

ברגע ששמים דברים בחוץ, אנשים לא מתנהגים כמו שהם מתנהגים בגלריה.

ואז, השאלה היא: האם אפשר להוסיף איזה דבר למפגש האקראי.

אפשר להגדיל את האקראיות של העולם,

וליצור סביבה שבה ניתן לקיים מין הנאה מההאקראיות הזו.

וגם להפוך אותו למשמעותי.

אתה יכול להיות בפינת רחוב, ולזרוק ביצים על אנשים. זה יהיה די אקראי. [צוחק]

אבל אתה רוצה ליצור משהו בעל משמעות גדולה יותר וליצור, מין עומק נוסף.

אבל למעשה להביא זאת אל העולם ולא לבודד זאת בחלל של הגלריה.
