    but as a matter of fact many of people don't experience

    meditation as a positive experience

    and when you start tot read the word of the Buddha

    and you start to see how he explains all the psychology of meditation

    how meditation is supposed to be
  • Not Synced
    experienced by yourself, personally.

    you start to realize the incredible emphasis
  • Not Synced
    the Buddha has on this thing called the positive experience
  • Not Synced
    you'll probably have a look at one of the
  • Not Synced
    suttas later on
  • Not Synced
    but basically one of the suttas which talks about the psychology

    of meditation, when you read it, it starts off with ok
  • Not Synced
    you are a virtuous person
  • Not Synced
    this is the foundation of all meditation,
  • Not Synced
    to practice virtue
  • Not Synced
    one of the things that is unfortunately
  • Not Synced
    forgotten around the world
  • Not Synced
    people talk about mindfulness
  • Not Synced
    and they forget about the virtue aspect
  • Not Synced
    virtue means both being kind and avoid
  • Not Synced
    doing bad things
  • Not Synced
    that is the foundation, so once you have that

    you can start your meditation practice
  • Not Synced
    then from that virtue, the Buddha starts to explain
  • Not Synced
    from virtue you have non-regret, right
  • Not Synced
    non-regret is obviously a positive experience already
  • Not Synced
    from non-regret you get gladness
  • Not Synced
    from gladness you get rapture (piti)
  • Not Synced
    from piti you get calm
  • Not Synced
    calm of the mind and the body
  • Not Synced
    from calm comes even more happiness
  • Not Synced
    gladness, rapture, happiness, calm
  • Not Synced
    and then from that comes what is called samadhi
  • Not Synced
    which is the unification of the mind
  • Not Synced
    when the mind goes into a profound
  • Not Synced
    state of meditation practice
  • Not Synced
    one of the very important facts about this
  • Not Synced
    is that meditation is all about happiness
  • Not Synced
    almost every word the Buddha uses
  • Not Synced
    there on how were supposed to experience
  • Not Synced
    it is one type of happiness after the other
  • Not Synced
    arising through the right practice of meditation
  • Not Synced
    so make sure that when you aren't here
  • Not Synced
    you don't do things which causes
  • Not Synced
    you to feel ill at ease, not relaxed
  • Not Synced
    which created too much pain
  • Not Synced
    and all these kind of things

    because if you do that
  • Not Synced
    there's no way you're going to be able
  • Not Synced
    to access those positive states
  • Not Synced
    that the Buddha is talking about
  • Not Synced
    this is os important
  • Not Synced
    it's sort of seems obvious

    human psychology often blocks you from
  • Not Synced
    seeing that
  • Not Synced
    so for this reason
  • Not Synced
    the very first thing I want to talk about in regards
  • Not Synced
    to meditation practice is what

    t do with the body
  • Not Synced
    the physical body, is really the first thing
  • Not Synced
    what you need to know about how to deal
  • Not Synced
    with the physical body
  • Not Synced
    is for the body to be comfotable

    not to sit with too much pain

    and these kind of things

    and for this reason we have all these great chairs

    at the back
  • Not Synced
    don't feel shy about using the chairs
  • Not Synced
    you're not competing with anyone else
  • Not Synced
    do what you need to do to make
  • Not Synced
    sure your own practice makes progress
  • Not Synced
    this is what it's all about
  • Not Synced
    so there's no competition here
  • Not Synced
    it doesn't matter what everyone else does
  • Not Synced
    forget about everbody else
  • Not Synced
    do what you need to do
  • Not Synced
    and it's wonderful
  • Not Synced
    more and more these days
  • Not Synced
    you go on meditation retreats
  • Not Synced
    you see that chairs are coming out
  • Not Synced
    and it's natural, most of us
  • Not Synced
    have grown up in a society
  • Not Synced
    in a culture where we sit on chairs
  • Not Synced
    all the time
  • Not Synced
    when you've grown up sitting on a chair
  • Not Synced
    all the time
  • Not Synced
    and suddenly you're told to sit
  • Not Synced
    on the floor
  • Not Synced
    it actually can be very difficult
  • Not Synced
    so please don't beshy about
  • Not Synced
    using the chairs
  • Not Synced
    much better to be a little bit more
  • Not Synced
    comfortable, then to be a little but on the pain side
  • Not Synced
    while you're sitting, that is much better
  • Not Synced
    there's so many horror stories
  • Not Synced
    of people I've heard over the years
  • Not Synced
    who don't get this very basic thing
  • Not Synced
    and one of those stories
  • Not Synced
    when I was in Singapore
  • Not Synced
    a few years ago
  • Not Synced
    one of the things as a monk,
  • Not Synced
    you travel a lot
  • Not Synced
    it might seem strange
  • Not Synced
    but you actually travel a lot
  • Not Synced
    because there;s so much demand
  • Not Synced
    for English speaking monks everywhere
  • Not Synced
    English speaking monks are very few and far between
  • Not Synced
    so you get kind of ferried around the world
  • Not Synced
    by plane everywhere
  • Not Synced
    to talk to people
  • Not Synced
    it's very nice
  • Not Synced
    it's a very nice thing to do to
  • Not Synced
    give that kind of service
  • Not Synced
    but it means that sometime you're in Singapore
  • Not Synced
    and when you're in Singapore
  • Not Synced
    of course you meet Buddhist people
  • Not Synced
    just like here
  • Not Synced
    just like everywhere else
  • Not Synced
    and I was staying in the apartment of this man
  • Not Synced
    he was from Kuala Lumpur, originally
  • Not Synced
    but he was working in Singapore
  • Not Synced
    and he was traveling back and forth
  • Not Synced
    and very kindly offered me to stay in his apartment
  • Not Synced
    and then one day while I was there
  • Not Synced
    he comes to me and says
  • Not Synced
    "Bhante, I have a question for you,
  • Not Synced
    have you got a few minutes."
  • Not Synced
    And of course I'm staying in his apartment
  • Not Synced
    so of course I have a few minutes for him
  • Not Synced
    and he says to me that,
  • Not Synced
    "a few years ago I was on this meditation retreat
  • Not Synced
    it was the worst experience
  • Not Synced
    of my entire life
  • Not Synced
    it was terrible, I was in pain all the way
  • Not Synced
    through, I felt so tense and non-relaxed
  • Not Synced
    and so completely ill at ease
  • Not Synced
    for nine days.
  • Not Synced
    Never ever in my entire life
  • Not Synced
    do I want to go on meditation retreat again."
  • Not Synced
    And I said ooh, wait a minute
  • Not Synced
    you're talking it too far
  • Not Synced
    just because you had one bad experience
  • Not Synced
    doesn't mean you should never ever go on meditation retreat again
  • Not Synced
    retreats are different
  • Not Synced
    there are different types of teachers
  • Not Synced
    there are different ways
  • Not Synced
    you can't assume that everything is the same
  • Not Synced
    that everything is so bad
  • Not Synced
    but he insisted that no
  • Not Synced
    he never ever wanted to meditate again
  • Not Synced
    because the experience had been
  • Not Synced
    so terrible
  • Not Synced
    was the worst thing he had ever done in his life
  • Not Synced
    I couldn't really persuade him
  • Not Synced
    so he asked me "what should I do,"
  • Not Synced
    I don't know what he should do
  • Not Synced
    But essentially he was turned off for life
  • Not Synced
    in regards to meditation practice
  • Not Synced
    and that is a very unfortunate thing
  • Not Synced
    because the idea with meditation,
  • Not Synced
    the idea with the spiritual path
  • Not Synced
    is that is something which develops
  • Not Synced
    over time
  • Not Synced
    when you keep practicing
  • Not Synced
    these things, when you keep doing things
  • Not Synced
    especially in the right way
  • Not Synced
    when you understand what morality is
  • Not Synced
    on the Buddhist path
  • Not Synced
    you practice that in the right way
  • Not Synced
    and you combine that with making the
  • Not Synced
    mind peaceful and calm
  • Not Synced
    then these things together are
  • Not Synced
    incredibly powerful
  • Not Synced
    and the longer you do it
  • Not Synced
    there's a gradual transformation of your entire
  • Not Synced
    character, of your entire person
  • Not Synced
    and essentially you are creating
  • Not Synced
    a new personality for yourself
  • Not Synced
    as you go through this
  • Not Synced
    but the effect really is most powerful
  • Not Synced
    when you keep on doing it
  • Not Synced
    month after month
  • Not Synced
    year after year
  • Not Synced
    the results become very powerful
  • Not Synced
    after a while
  • Not Synced
    so please make sure that you do this
  • Not Synced
    in such a way that encourages you
  • Not Synced
    to keep on doing it also in the future
  • Not Synced
    and when you feel encouraged to do it
  • Not Synced
    also in the future
  • Not Synced
    then the long term benefits will be incredibly powerful
  • Not Synced
    and something very beneficial will come out of this
  • Not Synced
    so don't do what this man in Singapore did
  • Not Synced
    he was a bit of an extreme example
  • Not Synced
    bit this is what happens sometime to
  • Not Synced
    people. I know that there are certain times
  • Not Synced
    on meditation retreat where only a very
  • Not Synced
    small fraction of the people
  • Not Synced
    come back to those retreats
  • Not Synced
    precisely because of the amount of pain
  • Not Synced
    and problems and tensions that
  • Not Synced
    people experience as a consequence of that
  • Not Synced
    practice
  • Not Synced
    So this is the first tenet
  • Not Synced
    allow the body to be relaxed
