The Privileges of the Christian - Geoff Thomas

  • 0:01 - 0:05
It's a great honor for me to be here.
  • 0:05 - 0:07
I've heard about this conference from Mark
  • 0:07 - 0:11
for so long and never thought I'd be able
  • 0:11 - 0:16
and privileged to speak to you.
  • 0:16 - 0:19
I'm so pleased to be here.
  • 0:19 - 0:20
I want to speak to you
  • 0:20 - 0:24
from the first letter of Peter chapter 1
  • 0:24 - 0:27
    and verses 8 and 9.
  • 0:27 - 0:29
    1 Peter 1:8-9
  • 0:29 - 0:32
"Jesus Christ, whom having not seen,
  • 0:32 - 0:33
    you love.
  • 0:33 - 0:36
Though now, though you see Him not,
  • 0:36 - 0:41
yet believing, you rejoice with joy
  • 0:41 - 0:44
    inexpressible and full of glory,
  • 0:44 - 0:47
receiving the end of your faith,
  • 0:47 - 0:50
    the salvation of your souls."
  • 0:50 - 0:52
I want to speak to you tonight
  • 0:52 - 0:55
on the privileges of being a Christian.
  • 0:55 - 0:58
    I could speak to you
    about the responsibilities
  • 0:58 - 0:59
    of being a Christian,
  • 0:59 - 1:04
and referring to this same passage.
  • 1:04 - 1:10
    All privileges lead to responsibilities.
  • 1:10 - 1:13
Mom and dad, they know Jesus Christ
  • 1:13 - 1:14
    as their Lord and Savior,
  • 1:14 - 1:18
and they speak warmly to you about Him,
  • 1:18 - 1:21
and they tell you you need Him
  • 1:21 - 1:23
and it would wonderful if you had Him
  • 1:23 - 1:27
as your own personal Lord and Savior.
  • 1:27 - 1:28
    And that's a wonderful privilege.
  • 1:28 - 1:31
    There are millions of boys
and girls in the world -
  • 1:31 - 1:36
they've never heard of Jesus Christ.
  • 1:36 - 1:39
    That privilege though
    brings responsibilities.
  • 1:39 - 1:41
What will you do with this Jesus
  • 1:41 - 1:44
    who is called the Christ?
  • 1:44 - 1:46
Or, you may on Sunday's come to a church,
  • 1:46 - 1:49
and it's not just a very formal occasion,
  • 1:49 - 1:53
    and people dress up,
  • 1:53 - 1:57
chant and behave in predictable ways,
  • 1:57 - 2:00
but the climax of the service,
  • 2:00 - 2:01
after we've sung and prayed to God
  • 2:01 - 2:07
is that God speaks to us through His Word.
  • 2:07 - 2:12
We feel something of conviction and joy
  • 2:12 - 2:15
    in hearing about Jesus Christ.
  • 2:15 - 2:19
Now, that privilege - it's not
    given to lots of people.
  • 2:19 - 2:23
It's given to you, and privileges
    bring responsibilities.
  • 2:23 - 2:28
So, you must not just be
    a hearer of the Word,
  • 2:28 - 2:34
    but you must do what
the preacher tells you to do.
  • 2:34 - 2:37
And so here tonight, we're going to look
  • 2:37 - 2:40
    at the privileges rather
    than the responsibilities,
  • 2:40 - 2:42
because I want to speak to you about grace
  • 2:42 - 2:48
    and not about law.
  • 2:48 - 2:53
You know there are people who think
  • 2:53 - 2:57
    it's really a very hard life -
    the Christian life.
  • 2:57 - 2:58
    You got in your car.
  • 2:58 - 3:00
Your neighbor said, "where are you going?"
  • 3:00 - 3:04
"We're going to Denton in Texas."
  • 3:04 - 3:07
"Oh yes, are you having a vacation?
  • 3:07 - 3:11
    Going to the rodeo?"
  • 3:11 - 3:13
    "It's a conference.
  • 3:13 - 3:16
We're going to hear the Bible preached."
  • 3:16 - 3:18
    And after you drove off,
  • 3:18 - 3:19
he turned to his wife and said,
  • 3:19 - 3:24
"Oh, what a life... what a life."
  • 3:24 - 3:25
"They're going to hear the Bible."
  • 3:25 - 3:29
They think it's a joyless life.
  • 3:29 - 3:31
    And sometimes we do emphasize
  • 3:31 - 3:33
the places we don't go to,
  • 3:33 - 3:35
and the practices we don't approve of,
  • 3:35 - 3:37
and the language we don't use.
  • 3:37 - 3:41
People think they have to give up so much
  • 3:41 - 3:44
if they are to become Christians.
  • 3:44 - 3:47
We Christians never think like that.
  • 3:47 - 3:50
We've given up what we could never keep.
  • 3:50 - 3:54
And we've gained what we will never lose.
  • 3:54 - 3:59
And Peter here in these verses
that I've read in your hearing,
  • 3:59 - 4:04
    Peter tells us about some
    of the great privileges
  • 4:04 - 4:06
    that a Christian has.
  • 4:06 - 4:10
    And the first great privilege
    that a Christian has
  • 4:10 - 4:14
is he has someone to believe in.
  • 4:14 - 4:19
    Verse 8, Though you don't
    see Jesus Christ now -
  • 4:19 - 4:24
now - not today, but one day -
  • 4:24 - 4:27
but now you don't see Him,
  • 4:27 - 4:28
    but you believe in Him.
  • 4:28 - 4:31
    How is that possible when
    I as a boy in school -
  • 4:31 - 4:34
    I was converted in 1954
  • 4:34 - 4:38
in a little Baptist church up the valley.
  • 4:38 - 4:40
    Just an ordinary conversion.
  • 4:40 - 4:44
And I witnessed to my friends,
  • 4:44 - 4:46
and some of them would say,
  • 4:46 - 4:49
    "Well, seeing's believing."
  • 4:49 - 4:53
    As though that just
    destroyed the whole case
  • 4:53 - 4:56
    for Christianity.
  • 4:56 - 5:02
Some of you - you never
    saw your grandmother.
  • 5:02 - 5:04
She died when you were a baby,
  • 5:04 - 5:07
or perhaps before you were born.
  • 5:07 - 5:10
    But your mother tells
    you stories about her,
  • 5:10 - 5:14
    and the love she showed,
  • 5:14 - 5:16
and how she protected your mother
  • 5:16 - 5:18
when your mother was very vulnerable
  • 5:18 - 5:20
at one time in her life.
  • 5:20 - 5:25
    And she talks about the
    fun they had together
  • 5:25 - 5:26
and what a lovely person she was.
  • 5:26 - 5:30
Do you believe in your grandmother?
  • 5:30 - 5:32
    You never saw her.
  • 5:32 - 5:34
But, of course, you do believe in her.
  • 5:34 - 5:36
You believe in her through the testimony
  • 5:36 - 5:39
of someone who did see her
  • 5:39 - 5:42
and whose life was changed by her.
  • 5:42 - 5:45
    And that's how it was
    with these Christians
  • 5:45 - 5:47
in what we call today Turkey,
  • 5:47 - 5:50
but then in Cappadocia, Asia, Bythenia.
  • 5:50 - 5:53
    These places in the
    opening verses he tell us,
  • 5:53 - 5:55
    he's addressing the Christians.
  • 5:55 - 5:57
Jesus Christ never went to Turkey.
  • 5:57 - 5:59
    He went to Africa.
  • 5:59 - 6:01
    He never came to Europe.
  • 6:01 - 6:02
    When He was a baby,
  • 6:02 - 6:04
He went to North Africa, didn't He?
  • 6:04 - 6:05
    To Egypt.
  • 6:05 - 6:09
He was there and protected from Herod.
  • 6:09 - 6:13
But that wonderful evangelism of His
  • 6:13 - 6:15
over three years and then He gathered
  • 6:15 - 6:21
    500 people - His flock.
  • 6:21 - 6:24
And they all went different places
  • 6:24 - 6:28
    speaking of the transforming power
  • 6:28 - 6:31
of His life and His resurrection.
  • 6:31 - 6:33
They shared it with people everywhere.
  • 6:33 - 6:35
    Some came to Turkey,
  • 6:35 - 6:38
    and they said, ah, we've
    got good news for you.
  • 6:38 - 6:39
And we can't say that, can't we?
  • 6:39 - 6:42
    Everybody in America,
  • 6:42 - 6:43
we have good news for you.
  • 6:43 - 6:45
We have a Savior for you.
  • 6:45 - 6:46
We have a Teacher for you.
  • 6:46 - 6:48
    We have a Great Shepherd
  • 6:48 - 6:52
who'll look after you and protect you.
  • 6:52 - 6:55
    I have good news for
    everybody here tonight.
  • 6:55 - 6:59
    Good news about Jesus Christ.
  • 6:59 - 7:05
    And so, they wanted to
    know more about Him.
  • 7:05 - 7:07
They came to believe in Him,
  • 7:07 - 7:10
    and believe big truths,
  • 7:10 - 7:14
    so that these two
    letters that Peter wrote,
  • 7:14 - 7:18
they were full of meaty doctrine
  • 7:18 - 7:20
and a great concept of God
  • 7:20 - 7:23
    and of Jesus Christ.
  • 7:23 - 7:26
Because Peter, you see, was an eyewitness.
  • 7:26 - 7:27
    He was there.
  • 7:27 - 7:29
He was there when Jesus called him
  • 7:29 - 7:30
when he was tending his nets
  • 7:30 - 7:32
    with his brother.
  • 7:32 - 7:34
    He was there on the
    Mount of Transfiguration.
  • 7:34 - 7:37
    He was there in Gethsemane.
  • 7:37 - 7:40
He was there in the Upper Room.
  • 7:40 - 7:43
He went into the tomb and he saw it.
  • 7:43 - 7:45
    It was empty, but the
    grave clothes were there.
  • 7:45 - 7:48
    He was an eyewitness.
  • 7:48 - 7:51
And that is how we are Christians
  • 7:51 - 7:55
    in Denton tonight.
  • 7:55 - 7:58
We are here not that Jesus ever came
  • 7:58 - 8:00
    to America,
  • 8:00 - 8:05
    but because people who
    were His eyewitnesses -
  • 8:05 - 8:07
    Matthew, Mark, Luke, John,
  • 8:07 - 8:10
Peter, Paul, James, Jude, and others -
  • 8:10 - 8:12
    they saw Him.
  • 8:12 - 8:17
And they recorded this extraordinary life.
  • 8:17 - 8:18
    The most wonderful years
  • 8:18 - 8:20
in the history of this planet
  • 8:20 - 8:21
    when Jesus lived -
  • 8:21 - 8:22
    the most wonderful week,
  • 8:22 - 8:24
    the most wonderful days
  • 8:24 - 8:27
at the end of His life.
  • 8:27 - 8:30
No days can compare to them.
  • 8:30 - 8:32
And there's a record of them.
  • 8:32 - 8:36
And we believe because of this.
  • 8:36 - 8:38
    I was saved, I said, in '54,
  • 8:38 - 8:41
and a few other boys in '55,
  • 8:41 - 8:43
and we started a Christian gathering
  • 8:43 - 8:44
    in school.
  • 8:44 - 8:45
    And one of the boys,
  • 8:45 - 8:47
    he was called Neil Kinnock.
  • 8:47 - 8:49
    And Neil Kinnock then became
  • 8:49 - 8:50
    a prominent politician.
  • 8:50 - 8:53
    He led the Labor Party
  • 8:53 - 8:55
in a couple of general elections
  • 8:55 - 8:57
    against Mrs. Thatcher.
  • 8:57 - 9:01
    And he was interviewed.
  • 9:01 - 9:03
    People were interested;
    asked him questions
  • 9:03 - 9:05
about his religion, and he said,
  • 9:05 - 9:09
    "Well, I just admire Christians,
  • 9:09 - 9:12
    but I could never take
  • 9:12 - 9:14
    a leap into the dark."
  • 9:14 - 9:16
    That's what he said.
  • 9:16 - 9:19
And so I wrote to him.
  • 9:19 - 9:21
    "Dear Neil, remember those days
  • 9:21 - 9:22
    when we had Bible studies,
  • 9:22 - 9:23
    and you came along
  • 9:23 - 9:27
    and you were interested?"
  • 9:27 - 9:30
    You know, becoming a Christian
  • 9:30 - 9:32
isn't a leap into the dark.
  • 9:32 - 9:35
It's coming to the Light of the world.
  • 9:35 - 9:37
    It's coming to Jesus Christ.
  • 9:37 - 9:39
    And we learn about Him
  • 9:39 - 9:42
and we want to know more about Him.
  • 9:42 - 9:43
    We ask questions.
  • 9:43 - 9:47
We feed our minds and our understanding,
  • 9:47 - 9:49
    and our affections are stirred,
  • 9:49 - 9:51
and our conscience is troubled too,
  • 9:51 - 9:58
    but all about Him.
  • 9:58 - 10:04
And then we believe in Him.
  • 10:04 - 10:08
    It's a special word here.
  • 10:08 - 10:13
    Not believe about Him,
  • 10:13 - 10:22
    but believing right into Him.
  • 10:22 - 10:24
    You know, there's a great database -
  • 10:24 - 10:26
    you teenagers, you know
    what a database is?
  • 10:26 - 10:32
You all know about IT much
    more than we oldsters.
  • 10:32 - 10:35
There's a database in which every piece
  • 10:35 - 10:41
of the Greek language has been recorded.
  • 10:41 - 10:43
    People like Plato and Aristotle
  • 10:43 - 10:46
    and the philosophers,
  • 10:46 - 10:50
    and then Thucydides the historian,
  • 10:50 - 10:53
and then the great dramatists and poets.
  • 10:53 - 10:55
All of that - every bit of Greek
  • 10:55 - 10:57
    that men have ever found.
  • 10:57 - 10:58
    Classical Greek.
  • 10:58 - 10:59
    It's all on this database.
  • 10:59 - 11:02
And then, common Greek as Greek changed
  • 11:02 - 11:05
over the years and it came
    to the New Testament,
  • 11:05 - 11:07
and the New Testament's on it too.
  • 11:07 - 11:10
And then it's added to all the time.
  • 11:10 - 11:14
    They find pieces of parchment
  • 11:14 - 11:18
    preserved under the Egyptian sun.
  • 11:18 - 11:21
Letters to a wife from a soldier.
  • 11:21 - 11:24
    Bills and contracts.
  • 11:24 - 11:26
    And then they are published,
  • 11:26 - 11:29
and immediately then the people who run
  • 11:29 - 11:32
this website, they add it to it.
  • 11:32 - 11:36
    So, it's an enormous help
    if you are a scholar.
  • 11:36 - 11:39
And so, say you take this phrase now
  • 11:39 - 11:41
    which Peter uses here,
  • 11:41 - 11:42
which is used in the New Testament
  • 11:42 - 11:46
    about believing into someone.
  • 11:46 - 11:48
    So you type it in,
  • 11:48 - 11:50
and then you push a button
  • 11:50 - 11:52
and then it searches very quickly
  • 11:52 - 11:54
    through all this Greek.
  • 11:54 - 11:55
    And then it prints out.
  • 11:55 - 11:57
And you have a piece of paper
  • 11:57 - 11:59
    and you look at it,
  • 11:59 - 12:01
    and to your surprise,
  • 12:01 - 12:03
the only place in all the world
  • 12:03 - 12:06
where this phrase to believe into someone
  • 12:06 - 12:09
is found is the New Testament.
  • 12:09 - 12:11
In other words, it was invented
  • 12:11 - 12:12
    by the Holy Spirit.
  • 12:12 - 12:14
It was invented by the apostles -
  • 12:14 - 12:16
    it's the same thing -
  • 12:16 - 12:19
to explain to us what is the nature
  • 12:19 - 12:27
    of saving faith.
  • 12:27 - 12:28
    It's not believing about Him,
  • 12:28 - 12:32
but it's believing right into Him.
  • 12:32 - 12:35
    Being joined to Him.
  • 12:35 - 12:37
    Jonathan Edwards called saving faith
  • 12:37 - 12:40
    "a connecting grace."
  • 12:40 - 12:43
    It plugs us in.
  • 12:43 - 12:47
It grafts us into Christ and His life,
  • 12:47 - 12:50
    and we become joined
  • 12:50 - 12:52
    unbreakably,
  • 12:52 - 12:57
    eternally to God the Son.
  • 12:57 - 12:59
So that His life is yours,
  • 12:59 - 13:01
    and your life is His.
  • 13:01 - 13:02
    That's what a Christian is.
  • 13:02 - 13:05
You can only explain the heroism
  • 13:05 - 13:08
and courage and the wonderful patience
  • 13:08 - 13:11
of a wife looking after her husband
  • 13:11 - 13:14
    when he gets forgetful
at the end of his days,
  • 13:14 - 13:17
    and she's so wonderfully
    patient and loving,
  • 13:17 - 13:20
    because the strength
    and the patience
  • 13:20 - 13:27
and the joy and the peace
of Jesus Christ is in her.
  • 13:27 - 13:36
What a privilege to be a Christian!
  • 13:36 - 13:39
    Let's compare it to a
    proposal to marriage.
  • 13:39 - 13:42
You know, a young man and woman,
  • 13:42 - 13:43
    or older man and woman,
  • 13:43 - 13:48
they get married too, you know?
  • 13:48 - 13:51
They meet in a conference like this.
  • 13:51 - 13:52
    They talk to one another,
  • 13:52 - 13:57
and then, oh, they talk, and they talk.
  • 13:57 - 13:59
    So the father comes home
  • 13:59 - 14:00
    and he says, "Where's Cindy?"
  • 14:00 - 14:03
    "She's on the phone again."
  • 14:03 - 14:06
Upstairs. There she is talking to
  • 14:06 - 14:09
    this man in her life.
  • 14:09 - 14:10
    And they sit together
  • 14:10 - 14:13
and they eat together and they walk.
  • 14:13 - 14:15
    And she's watching him.
  • 14:15 - 14:16
    She's looking at him.
  • 14:16 - 14:18
    She's evaluating him.
  • 14:18 - 14:19
How is he with his parents?
  • 14:19 - 14:20
How is he with her parents?
  • 14:20 - 14:22
How is he with other women?
  • 14:22 - 14:24
    What are his values?
  • 14:24 - 14:25
    What are his ambitions?
  • 14:25 - 14:28
What does he want to do in life?
  • 14:28 - 14:30
    What's his goal?
  • 14:30 - 14:37
Is he patient and humble and sweet?
  • 14:37 - 14:40
Because when you go into marriage,
  • 14:40 - 14:44
there's no backdoor you can get out of
  • 14:44 - 14:45
    if it doesn't work.
  • 14:45 - 14:47
You don't think like that -
  • 14:47 - 14:52
    a Christian - if he's getting married.
  • 14:52 - 14:55
And finally, on a moonlit night,
  • 14:55 - 14:57
he gets down on a knee
  • 14:57 - 14:58
and he brings her a little box
  • 14:58 - 14:59
    and he proposes.
  • 14:59 - 15:02
"Will you marry me?" he says.
  • 15:02 - 15:04
And when she says, "I do,"
  • 15:04 - 15:06
it's not because of the moonlight
  • 15:06 - 15:09
    or the ring.
  • 15:09 - 15:12
It's because she's grown in appreciation
  • 15:12 - 15:14
    and knowledge and understanding
  • 15:14 - 15:16
    and wisdom and love.
  • 15:16 - 15:21
And she wants to go where he wants to go.
  • 15:21 - 15:22
And then we say this phrase:
  • 15:22 - 15:26
"They were joined together in marriage."
  • 15:26 - 15:27
    Now that's a picture
  • 15:27 - 15:34
of what it is to become a Christian.
  • 15:34 - 15:36
    You come to church
  • 15:36 - 15:38
and you listen to the preacher.
  • 15:38 - 15:39
    You have young people's meetings
  • 15:39 - 15:42
and conferences and there are camps.
  • 15:42 - 15:45
And there are books you read.
  • 15:45 - 15:46
    And you hear about Him.
  • 15:46 - 15:48
And you grow in your understanding
  • 15:48 - 15:50
    of who this extraordinary
  • 15:50 - 15:54
    uninventable Person is.
  • 15:54 - 15:57
And your heart is drawn out to Him.
  • 15:57 - 16:03
When He says, "Come to Me,"
  • 16:03 - 16:07
then you know the One who you're going to.
  • 16:07 - 16:08
    You've learned about Him
  • 16:08 - 16:13
and you know why you need Him.
  • 16:13 - 16:16
When you think that the future
  • 16:16 - 16:20
    is just impossible without Him,
  • 16:20 - 16:24
and you are joined together with Him.
  • 16:24 - 16:26
    You trust in Jesus Christ.
  • 16:26 - 16:28
    Let's talk about trust.
  • 16:28 - 16:32
I think faith is a rather
    strong Latin-based word.
  • 16:32 - 16:35
Rather hard and tough word: faith.
  • 16:35 - 16:38
But trust is a nice Anglo-Saxon word
  • 16:38 - 16:42
    and it's a gentler word, isn't it?
  • 16:42 - 16:45
Trust is something you know -
  • 16:45 - 16:47
you've got it or you haven't got it.
  • 16:47 - 16:49
You can measure that, can't you,
  • 16:49 - 16:51
when you wake up in the night
  • 16:51 - 16:52
    and you turn over
  • 16:52 - 16:54
and you look at the digital alarm clock
  • 16:54 - 16:56
    and it says 3:30,
  • 16:56 - 16:58
you know how accurate those clocks are.
  • 16:58 - 17:00
    You can trust it.
  • 17:00 - 17:04
    They're reliable.
  • 17:04 - 17:06
    A wife trusts her husband.
  • 17:06 - 17:07
    He's not home tonight.
  • 17:07 - 17:08
    It's late for him.
  • 17:08 - 17:10
He's usually home at this time.
  • 17:10 - 17:11
    But you trust him.
  • 17:11 - 17:12
You know he's not fooling around.
  • 17:12 - 17:15
    The children said they'd be
    home by half past nine,
  • 17:15 - 17:16
    and now it's ten.
  • 17:16 - 17:18
    Something's happened.
  • 17:18 - 17:21
    You trust them,
  • 17:21 - 17:24
    because that's the sort
    of children they are.
  • 17:24 - 17:30
That's the sort of husband you have.
  • 17:30 - 17:34
And so too, this is the
    distinctive characteristic
  • 17:34 - 17:35
    of the Christian;
  • 17:35 - 17:38
    the distinctive privilege
    that every Christian has.
  • 17:38 - 17:42
We trust in the Lord Jesus Christ.
  • 17:42 - 17:47
    We do.
  • 17:47 - 17:49
Our lives are not falling apart
  • 17:49 - 17:51
    because we know the One
  • 17:51 - 17:53
who's in charge of our lives.
  • 17:53 - 17:56
    He's got all authority in
    heaven and earth, He says.
  • 17:56 - 18:02
He's in control of our lives.
  • 18:02 - 18:03
    I believe in Him.
  • 18:03 - 18:06
    I've never seen Him,
  • 18:06 - 18:08
but I know who my heart believed.
  • 18:08 - 18:11
    I know this Savior -
  • 18:11 - 18:12
    the Jesus of the Bible.
  • 18:12 - 18:14
The Jesus my mother and father knew,
  • 18:14 - 18:15
    and the preacher knows,
  • 18:15 - 18:18
    and my friends know.
  • 18:18 - 18:19
    I'm safe in His presence.
  • 18:19 - 18:23
    I trust Him.
  • 18:23 - 18:26
Take my life and let it be
    consecrated, Lord, to Thee.
  • 18:26 - 18:29
    That's the voice of trust.
  • 18:29 - 18:31
    That's a Christian.
  • 18:31 - 18:34
    That's salvation.
  • 18:34 - 18:36
    That is eternal life.
  • 18:36 - 18:38
    We trust everything about Jesus.
  • 18:38 - 18:40
    Everything that He's done -
  • 18:40 - 18:42
especially when He died on the cross
  • 18:42 - 18:47
and He cried, "It is finished!"
  • 18:47 - 18:49
    We trust those words.
  • 18:49 - 18:53
We don't have to make a contribution
  • 18:53 - 18:56
    because it will be us,
  • 18:56 - 18:59
and it will be spoiled by us.
  • 18:59 - 19:04
We can't make a sinless contribution
  • 19:04 - 19:07
because we drink iniquity like water.
  • 19:07 - 19:14
So we trust in Him; in what He has done.
  • 19:14 - 19:17
In His achievements, in His righteousness.
  • 19:17 - 19:18
    His perfection.
  • 19:18 - 19:20
    His loveliness. His beauty.
  • 19:20 - 19:22
    And in His atoning death.
  • 19:22 - 19:24
    We trust in these things.
  • 19:24 - 19:28
My friend, Reg Burrows, he's a pastor.
  • 19:28 - 19:29
    He's retired now.
  • 19:29 - 19:31
He was shaking hands at the door
  • 19:31 - 19:33
    with people as they
    left one Sunday morning.
  • 19:33 - 19:35
An old lady came up to him
    and she shook his hand.
  • 19:35 - 19:37
    She said, "Oh, Mr. Burrows,
  • 19:37 - 19:40
I hope I manage to do enough
  • 19:40 - 19:43
    for God to accept me."
  • 19:43 - 19:46
Now, it's very helpful to a minister
  • 19:46 - 19:49
when somebody says something like that,
  • 19:49 - 19:51
    because then we can understand
  • 19:51 - 19:55
just where they are in this journey
  • 19:55 - 19:59
    into a living, saving relationship
  • 19:59 - 20:01
    with Jesus Christ.
  • 20:01 - 20:03
A remark like that tells us
  • 20:03 - 20:06
    that they haven't understood Christianity.
  • 20:06 - 20:08
    They haven't understood the gospel.
  • 20:08 - 20:12
    They haven't understood grace.
  • 20:12 - 20:14
    They are showing their lostness.
  • 20:14 - 20:16
They think God's made a contribution,
  • 20:16 - 20:20
and then we need to make a contribution.
  • 20:20 - 20:24
    Then God will accept us.
  • 20:24 - 20:29
    But, we are saved
  • 20:29 - 20:32
    by the achievement of Someone else;
  • 20:32 - 20:35
    by what that Person did.
  • 20:35 - 20:38
    That's what saves us.
  • 20:38 - 20:41
We never manage to do enough.
  • 20:41 - 20:42
    We never do.
  • 20:42 - 20:45
    Because of ego and pride
  • 20:45 - 20:47
    and self-pity,
  • 20:47 - 20:50
and all the things that spoil our lives
  • 20:50 - 20:51
    in this world.
  • 20:51 - 20:54
    I've never prayed a sinner's prayer.
  • 20:54 - 20:57
I've never done a zealous action.
  • 20:57 - 21:01
I need at the end of every day to say,
  • 21:01 - 21:03
    "Sorry, Lord, about today."
  • 21:03 - 21:06
    "Forgive another day, Lord."
  • 21:06 - 21:10
My best things - I have to say that.
  • 21:10 - 21:13
We are saved by the achievement
  • 21:13 - 21:14
    of Somebody else
  • 21:14 - 21:18
who never had to say "sorry"
at the end of every day.
  • 21:18 - 21:20
    The lovely beauty...
  • 21:20 - 21:23
    holy, harmless, undefiled,
  • 21:23 - 21:24
    separate from sinners,
  • 21:24 - 21:26
    higher than the heavens -
  • 21:26 - 21:29
    this is the extraordinary life
  • 21:29 - 21:31
    of the Man Christ Jesus.
  • 21:31 - 21:34
    The Son of God.
  • 21:34 - 21:39
    Saved by what He did.
  • 21:39 - 21:41
Christmas comes and then we have
  • 21:41 - 21:44
    "The Sound of Music."
  • 21:44 - 21:48
    All those lovely songs.
  • 21:48 - 21:55
    Maria, in the end,
    the stern grieving widower -
  • 21:55 - 21:58
the Captain - he collapses before her
  • 21:58 - 22:02
    and wants to marry her.
  • 22:02 - 22:03
And she can't get over it.
  • 22:03 - 22:05
    She is just amazed.
  • 22:05 - 22:07
She's just a simple peasant girl.
  • 22:07 - 22:12
    Got a good voice.
  • 22:12 - 22:14
    There she is.
  • 22:14 - 22:16
    And so she sings then.
  • 22:16 - 22:18
She's puzzling over why is it
  • 22:18 - 22:20
that God has allowed this fellow
  • 22:20 - 22:23
to fall in love with her.
  • 22:23 - 22:25
    And she sings, and you
    remember what she sings?
  • 22:25 - 22:29
    She sings, "somewhere
    in my youth or childhood,
  • 22:29 - 22:33
I must have done something good."
  • 22:33 - 22:36
That's what she says, doesn't she?
  • 22:36 - 22:38
I helped an old lady over the road.
  • 22:38 - 22:40
I was kind to my parents.
  • 22:40 - 22:42
    I wasn't nasty to animals.
  • 22:42 - 22:44
    I was patient with people.
  • 22:44 - 22:58
God saw all that and so He
    gave me this rich dude.
  • 22:58 - 22:59
    I have three daughters,
  • 22:59 - 23:02
and my youngest - she was born
  • 23:02 - 23:05
with a silver spoon in her mouth.
  • 23:05 - 23:08
So it all works out for her.
  • 23:08 - 23:13
    She passes, goes to university,
  • 23:13 - 23:15
    meets Glenn - a lovely fellow -
  • 23:15 - 23:16
    marries him,
  • 23:16 - 23:18
gets a job as a teacher,
  • 23:18 - 23:20
    has three children.
  • 23:20 - 23:23
She tells me the next thing.
  • 23:23 - 23:26
I say, "How is it that everything seems
  • 23:26 - 23:30
to happen to you like this?"
  • 23:30 - 23:34
    She says, "Somewhere in
    my youth or childhood,
  • 23:34 - 23:37
I must have done something good."
  • 23:37 - 23:41
    She knows it's a heresy.
  • 23:41 - 23:47
And she likes to tease her
old man about it, doesn't she?
  • 23:47 - 23:50
Now the Christian doesn't think like that.
  • 23:50 - 23:52
We don't think like that at all.
  • 23:52 - 23:53
    The Christian says
  • 23:53 - 23:56
    because of everything
    that Jesus Christ did,
  • 23:56 - 23:59
    God has blessed me.
  • 23:59 - 24:02
    Oh, what wonderful blessings!
  • 24:02 - 24:05
    I've got Him. His mercies
    are new every morning!
  • 24:05 - 24:08
    His faithfulness - it's immeasurable.
  • 24:08 - 24:11
You can't see the east or west of it.
  • 24:11 - 24:16
    How kind, how good,
how patient He is with me.
  • 24:16 - 24:18
    He's forgiven all my sins.
  • 24:18 - 24:23
    And so a Christian has
    someone to believe in.
  • 24:23 - 24:30
    We want to believe in
    such a Savior, don't we?
  • 24:30 - 24:32
I am trusting Thee, Lord Jesus,
  • 24:32 - 24:33
    trusting only Thee.
  • 24:33 - 24:36
    Trusting Thee for full salvation,
  • 24:36 - 24:38
    great and free.
  • 24:38 - 24:41
That's the response to this amazing love,
  • 24:41 - 24:47
that Jesus had seen the file on us.
  • 24:47 - 24:49
    He'd seen it. He knew.
  • 24:49 - 24:50
    He knew about everything.
  • 24:50 - 24:52
    The things done in darkness.
  • 24:52 - 24:54
The things that God has veiled
from those who know us best,
  • 24:54 - 24:56
    that we're so ashamed of.
  • 24:56 - 24:58
    He still loved us.
  • 24:58 - 24:59
    He still loved us.
  • 24:59 - 25:06
We're joined to Him by saving faith.
  • 25:06 - 25:09
Well now, who are you going to believe in
  • 25:09 - 25:15
if you say no to my Savior again tonight?
  • 25:15 - 25:18
Who are you going to trust in?
  • 25:18 - 25:21
    It can't be Hollywood,
  • 25:21 - 25:25
    after all the ugly disclosures.
  • 25:25 - 25:27
    The foundations have gone there.
  • 25:27 - 25:30
    That's hollow and ugly.
  • 25:30 - 25:32
    Sportsmen?
  • 25:32 - 25:36
    What figures are there?
  • 25:36 - 25:37
    Philosophers?
  • 25:37 - 25:40
    Writers?
  • 25:40 - 25:46
If you reject my Savior Jesus Christ,
  • 25:46 - 25:48
who have you got to look into
  • 25:48 - 25:52
    when you get married?
  • 25:52 - 25:54
When you get children and they're sick?
  • 25:54 - 25:57
When you've got bills to pay?
  • 25:57 - 25:58
    And you're getting older?
  • 25:58 - 26:03
    And the grandchildren are
    quite demanding too?
  • 26:03 - 26:04
    You're getting nearer death.
  • 26:04 - 26:07
    Who have you got?
  • 26:07 - 26:12
Who do you have if you
    say no to Jesus Christ?
  • 26:12 - 26:14
    Who have you got?
  • 26:14 - 26:17
    Look, there's this wonderful privilege.
  • 26:17 - 26:20
    A Christian has Someone
  • 26:20 - 26:24
to believe right into; to trust.
  • 26:24 - 26:29
He can rely on Him completely.
  • 26:29 - 26:32
    And the second great privilege
    that a Christian has here:
  • 26:32 - 26:34
A Christian has Someone to love.
  • 26:34 - 26:38
Verse 8: "Whom having not seen, you love."
  • 26:38 - 26:40
And it's the same illustration I use again
  • 26:40 - 26:47
    about your grandmother.
  • 26:47 - 26:49
    Mom takes you upstairs
  • 26:49 - 26:50
and she puts you in bed.
  • 26:50 - 26:52
And you say, "Tell me a story, Mom."
  • 26:52 - 26:54
She says, "Oh, it's late tonight."
  • 26:54 - 26:58
    "Tell me about Nana.
    Tell me about Nana."
  • 26:58 - 27:01
    "Oh please... please, Mommy.
  • 27:01 - 27:07
Please tell me about Nana and the cows."
  • 27:07 - 27:09
    "Oh, you've heard that story..."
  • 27:09 - 27:10
    "Tell me, Mommy."
  • 27:10 - 27:12
So, she starts to tell you how
  • 27:12 - 27:14
she went blackberry picking with jars
  • 27:14 - 27:17
in a field and you were picking,
  • 27:17 - 27:18
and the cows got very curious
  • 27:18 - 27:21
    and they all started to
    come nearer and nearer,
  • 27:21 - 27:23
    and then they started
    getting a bit faster.
  • 27:23 - 27:28
    And how your mother got
a bit frightened as they came.
  • 27:28 - 27:30
And she picked her up then -
  • 27:30 - 27:32
    her daughter, your mother -
  • 27:32 - 27:34
    carried her over the stream
  • 27:34 - 27:35
and dropped her over the wall
  • 27:35 - 27:37
    and clambered over the wall.
  • 27:37 - 27:43
    The cows all came.
  • 27:43 - 27:48
And looked at her. Looked at your mother.
  • 27:48 - 27:51
    You love the story.
  • 27:51 - 27:52
And when your mother tells it,
  • 27:52 - 27:57
you know, her eyes are filled with tears
  • 27:57 - 28:00
as she remembers that wonderful person
  • 28:00 - 28:02
    who loved her.
  • 28:02 - 28:05
    And you love her.
  • 28:05 - 28:07
You love her, though you never saw her,
  • 28:07 - 28:10
you love her because your mother
  • 28:10 - 28:13
    whom you just adore -
  • 28:13 - 28:16
    your mother loved her
  • 28:16 - 28:20
    and owed her so much.
  • 28:20 - 28:23
When you read a great biography
  • 28:23 - 28:30
    of Lloyd-Jones or Spurgeon,
  • 28:30 - 28:35
in the end, you love these people.
  • 28:35 - 28:37
    You love them.
  • 28:37 - 28:39
You don't want it to end.
  • 28:39 - 28:41
You start to read a few pages less
  • 28:41 - 28:43
because you don't want it to end.
  • 28:43 - 28:46
    You're so filled with admiration
  • 28:46 - 28:47
    that the world has seen
  • 28:47 - 29:00
so terrific a person as some
    of these people are.
  • 29:00 - 29:04
Peter tells us what he'd seen.
  • 29:04 - 29:06
    He told them.
  • 29:06 - 29:07
We went into the room together.
  • 29:07 - 29:11
It was just James and John and I.
  • 29:11 - 29:14
There were some others there -
  • 29:14 - 29:17
    Jairus and his wife,
  • 29:17 - 29:20
    and there was just
    the little girl and Jesus.
  • 29:20 - 29:22
There were seven of us in the room.
  • 29:22 - 29:24
They're all spellbound and they listen.
  • 29:24 - 29:25
    They know the story,
  • 29:25 - 29:28
but oh, they love to hear it again.
  • 29:28 - 29:29
And He went over to the bed
  • 29:29 - 29:31
and He held her by the hand -
  • 29:31 - 29:33
    her cold, dead hand.
  • 29:33 - 29:35
    And He said to her,
  • 29:35 - 29:39
    "Talitha cumi."
  • 29:39 - 29:42
    I am sorry, that's our language -
  • 29:42 - 29:46
    it's Aramaic.
  • 29:46 - 29:49
I just see it so vividly in my mind.
  • 29:49 - 29:51
My mother said it to me
  • 29:51 - 29:55
when I was a boy by Galilee.
  • 29:55 - 29:58
    My mother would wake
    me up in the afternoon.
  • 29:58 - 30:00
    She normally would just sleep
    throughout all the afternoon.
  • 30:00 - 30:03
    I wouldn't sleep at night.
    Talitha cumi, she'd say.
  • 30:03 - 30:08
    Get up, now, get up.
  • 30:08 - 30:11
And you build up this picture.
  • 30:11 - 30:13
    And it's a wonderful picture.
  • 30:13 - 30:14
And you start to love -
  • 30:14 - 30:16
not only believe in Him -
  • 30:16 - 30:20
    but to love this Man.
  • 30:20 - 30:24
    He's pure gold.
  • 30:24 - 30:26
    He's so approachable.
  • 30:26 - 30:28
    Women absolutely trust Him.
  • 30:28 - 30:29
    They bring their little children
  • 30:29 - 30:31
and they give them to Him
  • 30:31 - 30:33
    for Him to hold,
  • 30:33 - 30:39
and He prays God's blessing on them.
  • 30:39 - 30:42
    And that comes, not because
  • 30:42 - 30:45
    they'd actually seen Jesus -
  • 30:45 - 30:47
    because the Pharisees saw Him,
  • 30:47 - 30:49
and they saw Him raise Lazarus
  • 30:49 - 30:51
    from the dead.
  • 30:51 - 30:54
    That didn't make them
    Christians - seeing Jesus.
  • 30:54 - 30:56
    If Jesus came back today,
  • 30:56 - 30:58
    you might think,
  • 30:58 - 30:59
oh, I'd believe in Him then.
  • 30:59 - 31:01
    No, you wouldn't.
  • 31:01 - 31:07
    There's a real coldness in
    your heart towards Him
  • 31:07 - 31:10
about having Him as your Lord,
  • 31:10 - 31:14
to serve Him for the rest of your days.
  • 31:14 - 31:16
    You always have an excuse.
  • 31:16 - 31:21
    It's always so inconvenient
    just now, isn't it?
  • 31:21 - 31:24
Just never quite the convenient time
  • 31:24 - 31:27
to be trusting in Jesus Christ
  • 31:27 - 31:28
    and repenting of your sin
  • 31:28 - 31:31
    and starting to follow Him.
  • 31:31 - 31:35
You need a work in your heart.
  • 31:35 - 31:37
    Jesus calls it the drawing.
  • 31:37 - 31:40
    The drawing out
  • 31:40 - 31:43
    of the poison of unbelief;
  • 31:43 - 31:45
    the drawing of new affections
  • 31:45 - 31:49
    for Jesus Christ.
  • 31:49 - 31:50
"No one can come to Me,
  • 31:50 - 31:55
except the Father who sent Me draw him."
  • 31:55 - 31:58
    You need to be drawn.
  • 31:58 - 32:02
It's not just the physical sight,
  • 32:02 - 32:05
    but the drawing of love.
  • 32:05 - 32:07
He wraps cords of love around you,
  • 32:07 - 32:09
    in a meeting like this,
  • 32:09 - 32:12
and He starts to pull you to Himself
  • 32:12 - 32:14
    out of your unbelief.
  • 32:14 - 32:16
    He's just tugging you saying,
  • 32:16 - 32:18
    "I'm saying this to you.
  • 32:18 - 32:22
    That's why I sent the
    man from Wales there.
  • 32:22 - 32:24
That's why I brought you here
  • 32:24 - 32:28
    that you might know
    this Jesus for yourself,
  • 32:28 - 32:31
and that you might love Him."
  • 32:31 - 32:32
    And we do love Him.
  • 32:32 - 32:33
    Now when I say that,
  • 32:33 - 32:35
    everybody here's who's a Christian feels:
  • 32:35 - 32:39
Oh, I wish I did love Him more.
  • 32:39 - 32:41
    Oh, it's my chief complaint
  • 32:41 - 32:46
that my love is cold and weak and faint.
  • 32:46 - 32:50
I'm sorry that I don't love Jesus more.
  • 32:50 - 32:52
    Every Christian - the most
    mature Christian here
  • 32:52 - 32:55
    and the youngest Christian
    is saying that just now.
  • 32:55 - 32:58
When I say, we do love Him.
  • 32:58 - 33:02
We say, but I do love Him.
  • 33:02 - 33:04
    I do love Him.
  • 33:04 - 33:08
    I love the Lord.
  • 33:08 - 33:12
Oh, for grace to love Him more.
  • 33:12 - 33:13
    That's what we feel.
  • 33:13 - 33:20
And every one of us is feeling that.
  • 33:20 - 33:24
    Sometimes we feel if we
    had a better preacher
  • 33:24 - 33:26
    we'd love Him more.
  • 33:26 - 33:31
    Well, we always want to
    blame something out there,
  • 33:31 - 33:33
and the trouble is in here, isn't it?
  • 33:33 - 33:36
There was the great preacher Isaiah,
  • 33:36 - 33:38
    and he was preaching -
  • 33:38 - 33:42
what poetry, what passion, what pathos!
  • 33:42 - 33:44
The greatest of all the writing prophets.
  • 33:44 - 33:47
And there he is and he
    was preaching to them
  • 33:47 - 33:49
    and telling them of the
    Messiah who would come.
  • 33:49 - 33:51
"All we like sheep have gone astray.
  • 33:51 - 33:53
We've turned everyone to his own way,
  • 33:53 - 33:55
and the Lord has laid on Him
  • 33:55 - 33:58
the iniquity of us all," he told them.
  • 33:58 - 34:00
    They didn't understand.
  • 34:00 - 34:02
It was to them as if
    he was getting excited
  • 34:02 - 34:07
about a branch of bleached wood
  • 34:07 - 34:10
blown by the wind in the desert.
  • 34:10 - 34:12
A root out of dry ground.
  • 34:12 - 34:15
There was no beauty that they desired him.
  • 34:15 - 34:21
And he says, who has believed our report?
  • 34:21 - 34:23
To whom is the arm of the Lord revealed?
  • 34:23 - 34:29
    And he's talking about
    a touch from heaven.
  • 34:29 - 34:32
You've got to have a touch from heaven.
  • 34:32 - 34:34
It's no good my laying hands on you.
  • 34:34 - 34:38
You don't want a touch from a Welshman.
  • 34:38 - 34:41
But oh, you do need the touch of God.
  • 34:41 - 34:44
    Oh, you must have that.
  • 34:44 - 34:46
And you must be in your praying say,
  • 34:46 - 34:48
    "Lord, touch me."
  • 34:48 - 34:53
"Lord, don't let me go away untouched."
  • 34:53 - 34:56
    A Christian, then, is someone
  • 34:56 - 34:59
who has Someone to believe in,
  • 34:59 - 35:08
    and Someone he loves.
  • 35:08 - 35:10
    My mother was converted
  • 35:10 - 35:13
through the influence of an uncle -
  • 35:13 - 35:15
my grandmother's brother - Uncle Oliver,
  • 35:15 - 35:18
    who was converted
    in the 1904 revival.
  • 35:18 - 35:21
Well, he couldn't go anywhere -
  • 35:21 - 35:22
he'd see a crowd of people,
  • 35:22 - 35:25
    he'd speak to them.
  • 35:25 - 35:29
And he'd carry a text around town.
  • 35:29 - 35:30
    He had children's meetings.
  • 35:30 - 35:32
And he's see my mother then
  • 35:32 - 35:35
    for years afterwards
and he'd just say to her,
  • 35:35 - 35:38
    "Do you love Him, Bess?"
  • 35:38 - 35:40
    "Do you love Him?"
  • 35:40 - 35:42
    Because in the simple way
  • 35:42 - 35:44
sometime during the first World War
  • 35:44 - 35:46
    in 1917 or 1918,
  • 35:46 - 35:50
she'd given her heart to Jesus Christ.
  • 35:50 - 35:53
That had immense influence over me
  • 35:53 - 35:57
    twenty years later.
  • 35:57 - 36:01
She sung hymns to do every chore.
  • 36:01 - 36:04
When she vacuumed and when she washed
  • 36:04 - 36:06
and she cooked and she dusted,
  • 36:06 - 36:07
    she would be singing,
  • 36:07 - 36:10
"How sweet the name of Jesus sounds..."
  • 36:10 - 36:12
    "O, for a thousand tongues..."
  • 36:12 - 36:14
My friend Brian - my best friend -
  • 36:14 - 36:16
he said to me when we were about 15,
  • 36:16 - 36:21
he said to me, "Your mother's
    remarkable, isn't she?"
  • 36:21 - 36:25
    I said, "Yes?"
  • 36:25 - 36:30
He said, "The way she sings hymns..."
  • 36:30 - 36:34
    I thought, oh, his mother
    doesn't sing hymns.
  • 36:34 - 36:41
I thought every mother sung hymns.
  • 36:41 - 36:43
    Do you love Him?
  • 36:43 - 36:44
    Do you love Him?
  • 36:44 - 36:50
That's the great challenge, isn't it?
  • 36:50 - 36:52
    Why do we love Him?
  • 36:52 - 36:56
    Why is it impossible for
    us to stop loving Him?
  • 36:56 - 36:59
    Well, because of His teachings.
  • 36:59 - 37:02
    When it was said His
    disciples came unto Him,
  • 37:02 - 37:04
and He opened His mouth and He taught them
  • 37:04 - 37:07
saying, "Blessed are the poor in spirit,
  • 37:07 - 37:09
theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven.
  • 37:09 - 37:10
    Blessed are they that mourn,
  • 37:10 - 37:12
    for they shall be comforted.
  • 37:12 - 37:15
    Blessed are are the pure
in heart, they shall see God.
  • 37:15 - 37:18
    Blessed are the meek,
    they shall inherit the earth.
  • 37:18 - 37:21
    Blessed are they that hunger
    and thirst after righteousness,
  • 37:21 - 37:25
    for they shall be filled."
  • 37:25 - 37:28
    William Shakespeare never said
    anything as wonderful as that.
  • 37:28 - 37:31
    Charles Dickens? Never.
  • 37:31 - 37:32
    All the great American writers,
  • 37:32 - 37:35
    European writers, Tolstoy -
  • 37:35 - 37:37
    they didn't say anything
  • 37:37 - 37:40
    as wonderful as Jesus.
  • 37:40 - 37:51
Sometimes, you know, we read the Bible
  • 37:51 - 37:53
    and it's wonderful.
  • 37:53 - 37:56
    The Word of God.
  • 37:56 - 38:01
    The words of Jesus -
    wonderful words of life.
  • 38:01 - 38:04
    We have them.
  • 38:04 - 38:07
    We love His teaching.
  • 38:07 - 38:11
    We love His tenderness.
  • 38:11 - 38:14
We love the way He saw the dirty feet,
  • 38:14 - 38:15
and He did something about it.
  • 38:15 - 38:17
He took the basin of water
  • 38:17 - 38:20
    and the towel,
  • 38:20 - 38:24
    and He washed 24 feet.
  • 38:24 - 38:26
He got the donkey dung off them,
  • 38:26 - 38:27
    dried them.
  • 38:27 - 38:31
    They sat around in embarrassment
  • 38:31 - 38:33
    as He humbled Himself.
  • 38:33 - 38:35
    What a Man!
  • 38:35 - 38:37
He had so much on His mind then,
  • 38:37 - 38:38
    and He did that.
  • 38:38 - 38:40
He loved His neighbor as Himself.
  • 38:40 - 38:45
    How wonderful...
  • 38:45 - 38:47
We love Him when they drove nails
  • 38:47 - 38:49
    through His hands and feet.
  • 38:49 - 38:54
    He didn't say, "You wait
    till My Father gets you!"
  • 38:54 - 38:57
    He said, "Father, forgive them.
  • 38:57 - 39:01
They don't know what they're doing."
  • 39:01 - 39:03
    We love Him, don't we?
  • 39:03 - 39:06
We love the Lord Jesus Christ.
  • 39:06 - 39:11
We love the way He died for us.
  • 39:11 - 39:13
You know what happened a week ago today
  • 39:13 - 39:15
    in Carcassonne, in France?
  • 39:15 - 39:17
And we know about it because
  • 39:17 - 39:22
one of my former students, Elizabeth -
  • 39:22 - 39:25
    she's living there now.
  • 39:25 - 39:28
She came to faith in the church
  • 39:28 - 39:34
    my son-in-law pastors in London.
  • 39:34 - 39:35
    She was baptized by him,
  • 39:35 - 39:38
    and she came and studied
    art in Aberystwyth
  • 39:38 - 39:40
    and got first.
  • 39:40 - 39:42
    And she met Hisham,
  • 39:42 - 39:45
    and Hisham is an Arab.
  • 39:45 - 39:48
His father in Tunisia is an Imam.
  • 39:48 - 39:50
And through the testimony of his brother,
  • 39:50 - 39:51
    he came to faith.
  • 39:51 - 39:53
And oh, he made such progress
  • 39:53 - 39:55
    and such growth.
  • 39:55 - 39:58
    And they live in Carcassonne.
  • 39:58 - 40:00
He's the pastor of a church there,
  • 40:00 - 40:06
and she's expecting their sixth child.
  • 40:06 - 40:08
And last Friday, a week ago today,
  • 40:08 - 40:12
    an Islamic terrorist went
    into the supermarket
  • 40:12 - 40:15
    and started killing people.
  • 40:15 - 40:20
    And then he took the
    check-out girl Julie hostage.
  • 40:20 - 40:23
    The police arrived.
  • 40:23 - 40:26
    There was a very brave,
    wonderful policeman,
  • 40:26 - 40:29
    Arnaud Beltrame.
  • 40:29 - 40:37
And he went up unarmed and he said,
  • 40:37 - 40:41
"Let her go and I'll come instead of her."
  • 40:41 - 40:46
    Oh, the terrorist was very
    pleased to get a policeman.
  • 40:46 - 40:51
And she came out and he went in.
  • 40:51 - 40:56
And he cut his throat and shot him dead.
  • 40:56 - 40:58
    And the marines went in
    and there was a gunfight.
  • 40:58 - 41:01
    And the terrorist was killed.
  • 41:01 - 41:04
    A week today.
  • 41:04 - 41:08
    And Julie, this check-out girl,
  • 41:08 - 41:12
    they talked to her
    afterwards and she said,
  • 41:12 - 41:17
"He gave his life for me.
  • 41:17 - 41:27
    He had himself killed
    so that I could live."
  • 41:27 - 41:29
    Now, what does a
    Christian congregation do?
  • 41:29 - 41:32
    Well, they are active.
  • 41:32 - 41:35
    They go around the
    supermarket the next day
  • 41:35 - 41:37
in the area where this terrorist grew up,
  • 41:37 - 41:40
and they gave out a special
    leaflet that he's written -
  • 41:40 - 41:44
a little booklet called "Are We in War?"
  • 41:44 - 41:48
    And last night then,
    they hired the local cinema,
  • 41:48 - 41:53
and the cinema people dropped the movie
  • 41:53 - 41:55
and they showed then the film,
  • 41:55 - 41:56
    "The Case for Christ,"
  • 41:56 - 41:58
the story of Lee Strobel's journey
  • 41:58 - 42:00
    from atheism to living faith.
  • 42:00 - 42:02
And they had a book table out,
  • 42:02 - 42:03
and it was full of French Bibles
  • 42:03 - 42:05
    and tracts and leaflets.
  • 42:05 - 42:06
    Everyone went.
  • 42:06 - 42:10
170 people tried to get into a room
  • 42:10 - 42:19
    with 150 chairs last night.
  • 42:19 - 42:26
They wrote to me this morning about it.
  • 42:26 - 42:32
We love Him because He gave His life.
  • 42:32 - 42:36
He gave His life - a hard life.
  • 42:36 - 42:38
    Not a trashy life.
  • 42:38 - 42:40
    This beautiful, perfect life.
  • 42:40 - 42:43
And He gave it as the Lamb of God
  • 42:43 - 42:45
    without spot and without blemish.
  • 42:45 - 42:48
    He gave it in sacrifice,
  • 42:48 - 42:54
because that is how God is.
  • 42:54 - 42:57
That is the nature of God
  • 42:57 - 42:59
that without the shedding of blood,
  • 42:59 - 43:00
    there's no remission;
  • 43:00 - 43:02
    there's no forgiveness.
  • 43:02 - 43:04
    God demands a lamb.
  • 43:04 - 43:06
    God provides a Lamb.
  • 43:06 - 43:08
    God becomes the Lamb.
  • 43:08 - 43:10
    He finds the Lamb in His own heart;
  • 43:10 - 43:12
    in His own bosom,
  • 43:12 - 43:16
and He gives Him - His own dear Son.
  • 43:16 - 43:21
    He died for me.
  • 43:21 - 43:24
He gave His life that I might live.
  • 43:24 - 43:28
    We love Him.
  • 43:28 - 43:32
    Well, now, if you say
    no to my Savior again,
  • 43:32 - 43:35
who have you got to love?
  • 43:35 - 43:37
    Who do you have?
  • 43:37 - 43:41
    Who is there?
  • 43:41 - 43:43
    A couple of years ago,
  • 43:43 - 43:47
    we finished our lunch.
  • 43:47 - 43:49
    The children went next door
  • 43:49 - 43:51
    where the TV set is
  • 43:51 - 43:55
and where they do this sort of thing.
  • 43:55 - 43:59
We had coffee and shortbread cookies.
  • 43:59 - 44:01
There was a bit of a silence.
  • 44:01 - 44:03
    Glenn then said,
  • 44:03 - 44:07
"If there was some great figure,
  • 44:07 - 44:10
some great leader in the world today
  • 44:10 - 44:12
    you'd like to meet,
  • 44:12 - 44:15
    who would it be?"
  • 44:15 - 44:19
Well, now, that is a conversation stopper.
  • 44:19 - 44:22
And we waited and we thought.
  • 44:22 - 44:26
Britain and our politicians and Europe
  • 44:26 - 44:29
    and Asia, India, China,
  • 44:29 - 44:35
    Africa, the America's.
  • 44:35 - 44:38
Now we can thank God that there are
  • 44:38 - 44:41
    some governors and congressman,
  • 44:41 - 44:45
    vice-presidents -
  • 44:45 - 44:50
    we'd like to meet them.
  • 44:50 - 44:52
We were silent and then my wife said,
  • 44:52 - 44:53
    "Nelson Mandela.
  • 44:53 - 44:56
I'd like to meet Nelson Mandela."
  • 44:56 - 45:02
Yeah, that would be typical of some men.
  • 45:02 - 45:07
    But, my friends, if you're
    going to reject Jesus Christ,
  • 45:07 - 45:09
whose picture are you going to put up?
  • 45:09 - 45:11
    Whose books, whose speeches,
  • 45:11 - 45:14
who will travel to listen to?
  • 45:14 - 45:15
    I've got someone now.
  • 45:15 - 45:18
    I'm going to follow him.
  • 45:18 - 45:20
    Here is Someone.
  • 45:20 - 45:22
And you can believe in Him.
  • 45:22 - 45:23
    You can trust in Him.
  • 45:23 - 45:27
Here is Someone you can love.
  • 45:27 - 45:29
    And thirdly, here is Someone
  • 45:29 - 45:36
who makes us full of joy
  • 45:36 - 45:42
inexpressible and glorious joy, he says.
  • 45:42 - 45:46
    Verse 6.
  • 45:46 - 45:48
Now there are times when we weep
  • 45:48 - 45:51
    because we are Christians.
  • 45:51 - 45:53
    We can break our hearts.
  • 45:53 - 45:57
We can have a grief we don't shrug.
  • 45:57 - 45:59
    Things really hurt us.
  • 45:59 - 46:01
    And we experience pain.
  • 46:01 - 46:05
    I couldn't be a faithful
    servant of Jesus Christ
  • 46:05 - 46:10
    and tell you it's going
to be joy all the while.
  • 46:10 - 46:17
There's a joy that seeks us in our pain.
  • 46:17 - 46:20
    There's a strength from heaven
  • 46:20 - 46:25
that helps us in our losses and crosses.
  • 46:25 - 46:36
    But there's a joy
    about the Christian life.
  • 46:36 - 46:44
    The apostle was caught up
    to the third heaven.
  • 46:44 - 46:50
We're told that the converted eunuch
  • 46:50 - 46:52
    went on his way rejoicing.
  • 46:52 - 46:54
We're told when Philip preached in Samaria
  • 46:54 - 46:55
the place was full of joy.
  • 46:55 - 46:59
He could have said, "full of repentance."
  • 46:59 - 47:02
He could have said the Ethiopian
  • 47:02 - 47:04
    went on his way repenting.
  • 47:04 - 47:09
And that's true - or believing.
    That's of course, true.
  • 47:09 - 47:12
But he says, oh, he was a joyful man
  • 47:12 - 47:14
    after he met Christ;
  • 47:14 - 47:16
    after he confessed Him.
  • 47:16 - 47:19
There was something in his heart
  • 47:19 - 47:20
that had never been there before.
  • 47:20 - 47:22
    There were joy bells ringing
  • 47:22 - 47:24
    in his heart.
  • 47:24 - 47:26
    His chains had fallen off.
  • 47:26 - 47:28
    His heart was free.
  • 47:28 - 47:31
    The prison doors were opened.
  • 47:31 - 47:34
    He had a liberty that
    he'd never known before
  • 47:34 - 47:39
in his life that God gives us.
  • 47:39 - 47:40
    Such joy.
  • 47:40 - 47:47
    It's "joy unspeakable" is
    the old King James phrase.
  • 47:47 - 47:49
    Indescribable.
  • 47:49 - 47:51
    How do you describe emotions?
  • 47:51 - 47:55
How do you describe flavors or scents?
  • 47:55 - 47:57
How difficult it is to use words
  • 47:57 - 47:59
    to go into another medium?
  • 47:59 - 48:01
And so, he says, oh, I wish
  • 48:01 - 48:05
I could describe this joy to you.
  • 48:05 - 48:09
    It's so real!
  • 48:09 - 48:13
It means that my back is bleeding
  • 48:13 - 48:16
and my feet are in stocks.
  • 48:16 - 48:18
    No bed - midnight.
  • 48:18 - 48:20
And yet, my friend and I
  • 48:20 - 48:23
can sing together to the Lord.
  • 48:23 - 48:25
And the whole prison can know
  • 48:25 - 48:28
what joy has come into the prison
  • 48:28 - 48:33
    because two servants of
    Jesus Christ are there.
  • 48:33 - 48:35
And it's in pictures like that
  • 48:35 - 48:39
that we begin to see that joy.
  • 48:39 - 48:43
    The disciples were full of
joy in the Holy Spirit it says.
  • 48:43 - 48:45
That's not saying they were regenerate.
  • 48:45 - 48:49
    It's saying much more than
    that they were regenerate.
  • 48:49 - 48:55
It's saying, ah, Jesus Christ was so real
  • 48:55 - 48:59
    and joy-giving to them.
  • 48:59 - 49:01
    What a privilege it was
  • 49:01 - 49:04
to be a servant of Jesus Christ.
  • 49:04 - 49:06
    What joy!
  • 49:06 - 49:08
    It's indescribable.
  • 49:08 - 49:10
    And it's full of glory.
  • 49:10 - 49:12
In other words, it's not manufactured.
  • 49:12 - 49:14
    It's not change the lights;
  • 49:14 - 49:17
    turn the lights down,
  • 49:17 - 49:19
    and let's sing and repeat,
  • 49:19 - 49:20
    and repeat again, and say,
  • 49:20 - 49:22
    "now, won't you come?"
  • 49:22 - 49:24
    And a long, long appeal
  • 49:24 - 49:26
just to get people out of their seats.
  • 49:26 - 49:27
I mean, if Jesus was here,
  • 49:27 - 49:29
    I'd be telling you all
    to come to the front,
  • 49:29 - 49:32
but the Word is nigh you.
  • 49:32 - 49:34
You've heard the Word. It's nigh you.
  • 49:34 - 49:36
It's in your heart. It's in your mind.
  • 49:36 - 49:38
    The word of faith that
    I've preached to you,
  • 49:38 - 49:40
    it's as close as that.
  • 49:40 - 49:42
    That's how close Jesus is.
  • 49:42 - 49:44
You don't need to come to the front.
  • 49:44 - 49:45
    He's there.
  • 49:45 - 49:49
He's been speaking to you tonight.
  • 49:49 - 49:51
    My Savior.
  • 49:51 - 49:55
Where two or three gather, He's there.
  • 49:55 - 49:57
    He's here.
  • 49:57 - 50:00
What a blessed Guest has joined us
  • 50:00 - 50:05
    in this conference tonight!
  • 50:05 - 50:07
    Joy inexpressible.
  • 50:07 - 50:09
    And it's full of glory.
  • 50:09 - 50:12
In other words, it's not human tricksters
  • 50:12 - 50:14
    and human psychologists
  • 50:14 - 50:19
    and man-manipulators.
  • 50:19 - 50:23
    It's God present.
  • 50:23 - 50:25
    The glory of God.
  • 50:25 - 50:28
The joy of heaven to earth come down.
  • 50:28 - 50:30
    It's that.
  • 50:30 - 50:37
    It's God's reality.
  • 50:37 - 50:41
My friends, we live in an age
  • 50:41 - 50:44
    where people are crying out
  • 50:44 - 50:47
    for happiness, aren't they?
  • 50:47 - 50:50
On Monday morning, there will be
  • 50:50 - 50:52
thousands of people all over America
  • 50:52 - 50:54
going to a doctor and saying,
  • 50:54 - 50:57
"Can you give me a little pill?
  • 50:57 - 51:00
    I'm feeling depressed."
  • 51:00 - 51:01
And there will be young people
  • 51:01 - 51:04
with all their life before them.
  • 51:04 - 51:07
    It's alcohol and it's drugs.
  • 51:07 - 51:08
    Isn't it?
  • 51:08 - 51:11
    That's the reality.
  • 51:11 - 51:14
    And relationships -
  • 51:14 - 51:16
if you say no to my Savior,
  • 51:16 - 51:18
    I'm saying, do you know
  • 51:18 - 51:21
what your future's going to be?
  • 51:21 - 51:23
    The ruin of your friends
  • 51:23 - 51:25
    and brothers and sisters;
  • 51:25 - 51:27
    members of your family.
  • 51:27 - 51:30
The mess they've made of their lives
  • 51:30 - 51:33
    because they've kept Jesus at bay;
  • 51:33 - 51:37
arm's length away, not in them.
  • 51:37 - 51:44
    Not believing in Him.
  • 51:44 - 51:46
This joy is full of glory.
  • 51:46 - 51:49
It's so pure. It's so heavenly.
  • 51:49 - 51:53
    And it doesn't cloy.
  • 51:53 - 52:00
We don't get fed up with it.
  • 52:00 - 52:04
Who are you going to turn to for this joy
  • 52:04 - 52:06
if you reject, again, Jesus Christ?
  • 52:06 - 52:11
Here is Someone - you can trust Him.
  • 52:11 - 52:12
    You can love Him.
  • 52:12 - 52:13
    He gives you joy.
  • 52:13 - 52:16
    And last of all here,
  • 52:16 - 52:18
He helps you achieve your goal in life.
  • 52:18 - 52:22
    There's a goal, there's a purpose in life.
  • 52:22 - 52:23
    There is.
  • 52:23 - 52:24
    You're on this planet.
  • 52:24 - 52:29
You've been given life for a purpose.
  • 52:29 - 52:30
    You're receiving the goal;
  • 52:30 - 52:32
the end of your faith -
  • 52:32 - 52:34
    the salvation of your souls.
  • 52:34 - 52:37
    You've got something
  • 52:37 - 52:38
that will never be taken from you.
  • 52:38 - 52:41
You've got a purpose in life.
  • 52:41 - 52:43
    This is a frustrated generation.
  • 52:43 - 52:45
Your friends in school, you know,
  • 52:45 - 52:47
they don't know what life is all about.
  • 52:47 - 52:51
    That's why they're trying drugs, isn't it?
  • 52:51 - 52:52
They have a goal, they say,
  • 52:52 - 52:56
    I'd like to earn $100,000 a year.
  • 52:56 - 52:58
    And then, they get $100,000
  • 52:58 - 53:00
    and they grumble about taxes,
  • 53:00 - 53:07
    and you can't do much
    with $100,000 these days.
  • 53:07 - 53:10
    It wasn't as sufficient;
  • 53:10 - 53:14
it wasn't a strong enough goal to live for
  • 53:14 - 53:20
    for a greenback dollar.
  • 53:20 - 53:23
And then, they never attain the goals
  • 53:23 - 53:24
    they set for themselves.
  • 53:24 - 53:26
    They're unrealistic.
  • 53:26 - 53:29
And many have no goals at all.
  • 53:29 - 53:31
    But Peter says we receive;
  • 53:31 - 53:34
    we get...
  • 53:34 - 53:37
    We get what we were made for;
  • 53:37 - 53:39
    why God made us;
  • 53:39 - 53:41
    why He redeemed us;
  • 53:41 - 53:43
what our purpose in life is.
  • 53:43 - 53:46
Man's chief end is to glorify God
  • 53:46 - 53:48
    and enjoy Him forever.
  • 53:48 - 53:49
    We never do it perfectly.
  • 53:49 - 53:52
    We would do it perfectly,
  • 53:52 - 53:56
but we achieve more and more satisfaction
  • 53:56 - 53:57
    for the Lord.
  • 53:57 - 53:59
I do it for the Lord.
  • 53:59 - 54:04
    Not for me.
  • 54:04 - 54:06
    The goal.
  • 54:06 - 54:07
We receive the goal of our life -
  • 54:07 - 54:09
    the salvation of our souls.
  • 54:09 - 54:12
That's how it ends, isn't it?
  • 54:12 - 54:15
    You're not just a body.
  • 54:15 - 54:17
You are a soul, aren't you?
  • 54:17 - 54:19
    You are.
  • 54:19 - 54:21
An animal is just a body.
  • 54:21 - 54:24
I put a jug of water down
  • 54:24 - 54:26
    and he'll drink it;
  • 54:26 - 54:28
give him some food and he'll eat it.
  • 54:28 - 54:29
    I'll bring a mate and he'll copulate
  • 54:29 - 54:34
    because he's just an animal.
  • 54:34 - 54:39
    People who aren't aware
    that they are souls
  • 54:39 - 54:44
    resort to the animal
    dimension of their lives,
  • 54:44 - 54:45
    don't they?
  • 54:45 - 54:50
    Eating, drinking, copulating.
  • 54:50 - 54:54
I drive up to Aberystwyth -
    my town of 50 years
  • 54:54 - 54:56
    along the cliff tops
  • 54:56 - 54:58
    in a road from (unintelligible)
  • 54:58 - 54:59
    and there's a view
  • 54:59 - 55:01
that's just particularly moving to me.
  • 55:01 - 55:04
The green grass of a large field
  • 55:04 - 55:06
    goes down to the cliffs,
  • 55:06 - 55:08
and then there's the Irish Sea
  • 55:08 - 55:10
    and the sun is setting,
  • 55:10 - 55:13
and there are some cows in the field.
  • 55:13 - 55:15
    It's a beautiful sight.
  • 55:15 - 55:17
Do I hear one cow saying to the other,
  • 55:17 - 55:20
    "Lovely sunset tonight, Blodwyn."
  • 55:20 - 55:22
No, I don't. And the other cow saying,
  • 55:22 - 55:29
"Yes, it is a great sight,
    isn't it, Gladys?"
  • 55:29 - 55:31
I'd be a vegetarian if cows could
  • 55:31 - 55:35
    speak to one another.
  • 55:35 - 55:36
    But they can't.
  • 55:36 - 55:39
    They just look at the grass;
  • 55:39 - 55:42
    at their instincts. That's all.
  • 55:42 - 55:45
They don't see the glory of God.
  • 55:45 - 55:52
    They don't see it.
  • 55:52 - 55:55
Your soul is ruined by sin,
  • 55:55 - 55:57
and you're not seeing the power
  • 55:57 - 56:01
and glory of God in this world.
  • 56:01 - 56:03
    My Father made it.
  • 56:03 - 56:06
Through Jesus Christ, He made it.
  • 56:06 - 56:08
    Without Him was not anything
    made that was made.
  • 56:08 - 56:09
    This is my Father's world.
  • 56:09 - 56:12
    This is my Savior's world.
  • 56:12 - 56:15
And that's what your goal is -
  • 56:15 - 56:17
to please Him and honor Him,
  • 56:17 - 56:19
and look forward to being with Him,
  • 56:19 - 56:21
and to a new heavens and a new earth,
  • 56:21 - 56:25
    when He will descend
  • 56:25 - 56:27
    this groaning universe,
  • 56:27 - 56:30
and there won't be one rogue molecule
  • 56:30 - 56:33
in all the world that doesn't show
  • 56:33 - 56:35
    the righteousness of Christ.
  • 56:35 - 56:37
A new heavens and a new earth
  • 56:37 - 56:41
    where righteousness dwells.
  • 56:41 - 56:44
    I want to be there.
  • 56:44 - 56:46
    I want to see that.
  • 56:46 - 56:48
    Come with us.
  • 56:48 - 56:49
    It will do you good.
  • 56:49 - 56:51
    Come with us.
  • 56:51 - 56:54
Don't be in unbelief any longer.
  • 56:54 - 56:58
    Don't go on now finding
    another excuse tonight
  • 56:58 - 57:05
    why you're not going
    to trust in Jesus Christ.
  • 57:05 - 57:06
But you're going to come to Him.
  • 57:06 - 57:10
    Now coming to Jesus Christ
  • 57:10 - 57:14
is a movement of your inmost being,
  • 57:14 - 57:15
    your heart, your life,
  • 57:15 - 57:19
as the Holy Spirit takes the Word
  • 57:19 - 57:23
that's been preached to you about His Son,
  • 57:23 - 57:28
    and He makes you ready
  • 57:28 - 57:31
    to saying,
  • 57:31 - 57:35
    "I'm not going on any
    longer in my unbelief."
  • 57:35 - 57:38
"I'm going to turn from it."
  • 57:38 - 57:40
"I'm sorry that it's been so long."
  • 57:40 - 57:44
"I'm sorry that I've had one
    vain excuse after another."
  • 57:44 - 57:47
    "And from now on,
  • 57:47 - 57:49
I'm going to trust in Jesus Christ."
  • 57:49 - 57:51
Now, you've got to say it.
  • 57:51 - 57:54
    There's no formula at all.
  • 57:54 - 57:57
But you've got to start speaking
  • 57:57 - 58:01
to Jesus Christ about you and Him.
  • 58:01 - 58:03
    Just somewhere quiet.
  • 58:03 - 58:09
Now, of course, we pray. Now.
  • 58:09 - 58:12
    But you keep praying
  • 58:12 - 58:16
until you know He's answered you.
  • 58:16 - 58:18
You keep praying until you have
  • 58:18 - 58:22
the inward witness of the Holy Spirit.
  • 58:22 - 58:24
    And you'll know.
  • 58:24 - 58:29
    You'll know by a peace, a trust,
  • 58:29 - 58:34
    a joy, a rest.
  • 58:34 - 58:37
    Because He promises that.
  • 58:37 - 58:39
"Come unto Me all ye that labor
  • 58:39 - 58:40
    and are heavy laden,
  • 58:40 - 58:43
and I will give you rest."
  • 58:43 - 58:47
Oh, I can cope with a
    crowd this size, Jesus says.
  • 58:47 - 58:48
    If all of Denton comes;
  • 58:48 - 58:51
if all Dallas, if all Texas,
  • 58:51 - 58:53
all get into their cars and buses,
  • 58:53 - 58:56
    because Jesus is here.
  • 58:56 - 58:59
    I can cope.
  • 58:59 - 59:03
    All men with their antagonisms,
  • 59:03 - 59:05
    or women with their phobias,
  • 59:05 - 59:08
    or children with their anxieties.
  • 59:08 - 59:12
    You come. You come.
  • 59:12 - 59:15
You give your heart. You give your life.
  • 59:15 - 59:18
    It's just a movement now -
  • 59:18 - 59:19
    private movement.
  • 59:19 - 59:22
You begin to talk to Him
  • 59:22 - 59:23
    about your future.
  • 59:23 - 59:28
And you say it's unbearable without Him.
  • 59:28 - 59:31
    Why you've been away
    so long - you're sorry.
  • 59:31 - 59:35
    And from now on, you're
    going to follow Him.
  • 59:35 - 59:37
    We want you.
  • 59:37 - 59:41
    That's why Jesus Christ has
    brought you here tonight.
  • 59:41 - 59:42
    Do you know that?
  • 59:42 - 59:45
    That's really the reason.
  • 59:45 - 59:48
    That you could have
    these wonderful privileges -
  • 59:48 - 59:50
    Someone to believe in
  • 59:50 - 59:53
and love and give you joy,
  • 59:53 - 59:57
and you have your souls saved.
  • 59:57 - 60:01
And you see the purpose in life.
  • 60:01 - 60:05
    I can't understand how anyone
  • 60:05 - 60:08
    can hear this offer
  • 60:08 - 60:12
of what the Lord will do for you tonight
  • 60:12 - 60:17
    and go away saying "no!"
  • 60:17 - 60:21
    How can you do that?
  • 60:21 - 60:22
    When He's brought you here
  • 60:22 - 60:26
    and He's telling you
    of His wonderful benefits;
  • 60:26 - 60:32
    these wonderful blessings and privileges.
  • 60:32 - 60:33
    You come to Him.
  • 60:33 - 60:35
You come to Him just as you are
  • 60:35 - 60:37
to just what He is now:
  • 60:37 - 60:41
    this welcoming, loving Savior.
  • 60:41 - 60:43
    "He that comes to Me,
  • 60:43 - 60:46
in no way will I cast them out."
  • 60:46 - 60:47
    However bad it's been;
  • 60:47 - 60:49
    however hypocritical.
  • 60:49 - 60:51
    You may be thinking,
  • 60:51 - 60:54
oh, if the people sitting next to me
  • 60:54 - 60:56
    knew what sort of man,
  • 60:56 - 60:58
what sort of woman I was,
  • 60:58 - 61:00
    they'd move away in shock.
  • 61:00 - 61:04
    You come. You particularly come
  • 61:04 - 61:11
to this Savior just as you are.
  • 61:11 - 61:14
    Let's pray.
  • 61:14 - 61:17
Lord, You have brought us here
  • 61:17 - 61:20
    to meet with Jesus Christ.
  • 61:20 - 61:22
    How privileged we are!
  • 61:22 - 61:26
    There are people meeting
    the prison warden tonight.
  • 61:26 - 61:28
There are people seeing a doctor
  • 61:28 - 61:30
    and a surgeon tonight.
  • 61:30 - 61:34
    There are people meeting crooks.
  • 61:34 - 61:38
    There are people who are
    going to hurt them tonight.
  • 61:38 - 61:40
    There are men who are
    going to abuse them.
  • 61:40 - 61:43
But we've met with the lovely,
  • 61:43 - 61:46
loving, sweet and holy Jesus Christ.
  • 61:46 - 61:50
Oh, thank You for being here, dear Savior.
  • 61:50 - 61:52
    Thank You for Your kindness
  • 61:52 - 61:56
and patience with us for so long.
  • 61:56 - 61:58
Now, we come just as we are,
  • 61:58 - 62:01
    without one plea.
  • 62:01 - 62:04
    Without any excuse.
  • 62:04 - 62:05
    Please take us.
  • 62:05 - 62:07
    Please receive us.
  • 62:07 - 62:09
    Please, from now on,
  • 62:09 - 62:14
help us to live with Thee and for Thee.
  • 62:14 - 62:17
We ask it for Your greater glory
  • 62:17 - 62:19
    and our eternal good.
  • 62:19 - 62:23
    Amen.
  • 62:23 - 62:27
Now we'll sing our last hymn.
