Trash talk: what we can learn from dumpster diving | Matthew Smith | TEDxGVSU
Description:

This literal "trash talk" will analyze the current state of food waste in America through the scope of a dumpster diver. It includes an inspirational story of how Matthew Smith started dumpster diving and all positive changes that have transpired from it. The talk will also reveal the disturbing retail practices that go on behind stores and the barriers that prevent people from rescuing and donating food. Along with the nuances of dumpster diving, expect to learn the tricks that stores employ to get consumers to over-purchase and waste and how to avoid them, reducing your personal food waste.

Matt Smith is a pre-nursing student at Grand Valley State University. He graduated from Grandville High School in 2016, where he excelled in academics and athletics. Taking his passion of distance running too far, he struggled with serious health problems that subsequently led him pursue dumpster diving and food waste activism. His efforts have saved almost $40,000 worth of food and other products, which is nearly all donated to food pantries, low-income residences and nursing homes, helping to feed and educate hundreds in the Grand Rapids area. Any revenue generated from his dumpster diving sales is donated to the Samuel Omogo Foundation.
