Blues Lead Guitar: Linking Blues Scales Patterns. Lesson #8of20 (Guitar Lesson BL-018)

  • 0:05 - 0:07
    Hello, Justin here.
  • 0:07 - 0:09
I hope your lick playing is going well.
  • 0:09 - 0:11
    Now, one of the things
a lot of people struggle with is
  • 0:11 - 0:15
once they've got some licks down on position one
and they can play some licks,
  • 0:15 - 0:17
    that's all cool,
    they learn position two.
  • 0:17 - 0:19
They get some licks in position two,
    they can use them too.
  • 0:19 - 0:21
One of the things people find a little bit sticky
  • 0:21 - 0:24
    is getting from position one
    to position two.
  • 0:24 - 0:26
So what I'm going to do is
to show you a couple of tricks,
  • 0:26 - 0:28
and I'm going to do it as licks
  • 0:28 - 0:32
that you can use to help to get yourself
from position one up to position two.
  • 0:32 - 0:36
I'll play them for you wider on first,
so you know what's going on.
  • 0:36 - 0:39
The very first one starts really,
to tell the truth, in position five
  • 0:39 - 0:43
    which we haven't covered yet,
but we are only using two notes from it anyway,
  • 0:43 - 0:45
so I'm sure you can handle that much.
  • 0:45 - 0:50
And, what we use is a third finger slide
each time where there's a tone step up,
  • 0:50 - 0:52
you'll see this in a sec,
  • 0:52 - 0:57
and it gets us all the way from having
a first finger in the 3rd fret,
  • 0:57 - 0:59
to having a first finger in the 10th fret.
  • 0:59 - 1:00
Quite a lot of movement in this lick,
  • 1:00 - 1:05
so it's going all the way
from position five to position three.
  • 1:05 - 1:05
    Big movement!
  • 1:05 - 1:07
OK, so the lick sounds like this:
  • 1:07 - 1:16
    . . .
  • 1:16 - 1:18
    It's quite a big move.
  • 1:18 - 1:26
    . . .
  • 1:26 - 1:29
    And lick number two is:
  • 1:29 - 1:32
    . . .
  • 1:32 - 1:35
Pretty simple one that one, it's only got two notes,
but it's a really useful shift.
  • 1:35 - 1:38
    . . .
  • 1:38 - 1:41
    Lick number three uses
    a direct position shift
  • 1:41 - 1:42
    which would be this:
  • 1:42 - 1:49
    . . .
  • 1:49 - 1:51
    That kind of thing,
    it's just to directly shifting.
  • 1:51 - 1:54
We've got to talk about how to use that
in quite a few different ways.
  • 1:54 - 1:57
And also number four we've got,
  • 1:57 - 2:00
which is a really cool kind of
    Stevie Ray style lick,
  • 2:00 - 2:03
where we use a little slide up
from position one to position two,
  • 2:03 - 2:05
then straight back to position one,
    so we get this
  • 2:05 - 2:12
    . . .
  • 2:12 - 2:15
There's quite a few variations you can use
on that one as well. Very cool lick.
  • 2:15 - 2:20
    And lick number five lastly,
is using this little two note trick to go:
  • 2:20 - 2:25
    . . .
  • 2:25 - 2:30
Really nice way of getting that.
That one's taking us from position one / two
  • 2:30 - 2:33
all of the way up to position four.
So that's a good one as well.
  • 2:33 - 2:35
So, what we need to do now is
to go to the close up,
  • 2:35 - 2:39
make sure that you can follow
and get the right fingers. Here we go!
  • 2:39 - 2:44
OK, so this one's not that close up,
because we are traveling a lot of ground here.
  • 2:44 - 2:48
So, we're starting here with the 3rd finger
at the 5th fret, of the 6th sting.
  • 2:48 - 2:52
So, we play that note first (plays)
  • 2:52 - 2:56
Then we are on the 1st finger,
3rd fret of the 5th string,
  • 2:56 - 3:01
    followed by the 3rd finger
in the 5th fret of the 5th string,
  • 3:01 - 3:06
and then that finger is going to slide up two frets
to get to the 7th fret.
  • 3:06 - 3:08
So that first little bit is this:
  • 3:08 - 3:12
    . . .
  • 3:12 - 3:13
    Again:
  • 3:13 - 3:18
    . . .
  • 3:18 - 3:21
I'm not picking this last note,
that's just slid up from the 5th fret.
  • 3:21 - 3:27
Then, to continue, we're going to go:
    5-7, 5-7, slide.
  • 3:27 - 3:30
    Just a straight up walk
in the middle part of position one pentatonic
  • 3:30 - 3:32
    and then the third finger
is going to slide up two frets,
  • 3:32 - 3:34
this is exactly the same as we did before.
  • 3:34 - 3:39
    . . .
  • 3:39 - 3:42
And now we have again exactly the same pattern,
  • 3:42 - 3:45
    but starting here
with the 1st finger at the 8th fret.
  • 3:45 - 3:46
    So, it's going 1-3, 1-3, slide.
  • 3:46 - 3:51
    . . .
  • 3:51 - 3:53
    OK, the whole thing now:
  • 3:53 - 4:05
    . . .
  • 4:05 - 4:06
    And a little bit faster:
  • 4:06 - 4:12
    . . .
  • 4:12 - 4:14
    OK, lick number two.
  • 4:14 - 4:16
This is quite an interesting one as well.
  • 4:16 - 4:19
Now, this one is only two notes long,
    so it's pretty simple.
  • 4:19 - 4:21
It's a very common blues trick,
  • 4:21 - 4:24
and what we are doing here
is we're starting with our first finger
  • 4:24 - 4:27
in 5ht fret of the thinnest string,
  • 4:27 - 4:30
and going to the same note, our third finger,
    I'll play that one first
  • 4:30 - 4:32
    . . .
  • 4:32 - 4:36
Third finger is reaching out to the
8th fret of the 2nd string
  • 4:36 - 4:38
    and very quickly sliding up
    to the 10th fret.
  • 4:38 - 4:40
    . . .
  • 4:40 - 4:41
Which is actually the same note.
  • 4:41 - 4:44
    . . .
  • 4:44 - 4:45
But we're using it to slide up,
  • 4:45 - 4:49
so we can get a good vibrato
and change position at the same time.
  • 4:49 - 4:52
    . . .
  • 4:52 - 4:55
Now, of course we can't get a very good vibrato
    there on the thinnest string,
  • 4:55 - 4:57
because it's a bit too close
to the edge of the neck, so:
  • 4:57 - 4:59
    . . .
  • 4:59 - 5:02
Really, really common blues lick that,
    and a good trick.
  • 5:02 - 5:04
    . . .
  • 5:04 - 5:05
So if you're playing in position one:
  • 5:05 - 5:08
    . . .
  • 5:08 - 5:12
Just use that to shift you up to position two.
    Excellent little trick.
  • 5:12 - 5:14
    OK, into number three.
  • 5:14 - 5:16
Now, number three is a direct shift,
  • 5:16 - 5:20
so we're not to use any slide
or any tricks like that to get up,
  • 5:20 - 5:22
we're just jumping up between the positions.
  • 5:22 - 5:26
Now, you can either practice here
using 4th finger and 1st finger from position one
  • 5:26 - 5:28
    . . .
  • 5:28 - 5:32
and then jumping up with the 3rd finger
up to the 10th fret of the thinnest string:
  • 5:32 - 5:42
    . . .
  • 5:42 - 5:44
Or, you can use 3-1 here,
    in position one:
  • 5:44 - 5:53
    . . .
  • 5:53 - 5:58
OK, now we've got cool lick number four,
the Stevie Ray Vaughn style lick,
  • 5:58 - 6:00
one of my favorite licks, I must say,
    I really like this one.
  • 6:00 - 6:05
We are starting in position one with the 3rd finger
on the 7th fret of the 3rd sting,
  • 6:05 - 6:08
we slide that up two frets,
    to the 9th fret:
  • 6:08 - 6:10
    . . .
  • 6:10 - 6:14
and now we're going to use here
the 2nd finger on the 8th fret of the 2nd string
  • 6:14 - 6:16
    . . .
  • 6:16 - 6:20
back to our note on the 9th fret
with the 3rd finger and slide it back two
  • 6:20 - 6:22
    . . .
  • 6:22 - 6:26
and we're going to finish it off
    with 1st finger, 5th fret, 3rd string
  • 6:26 - 6:29
    . . .
  • 6:29 - 6:33
that's just putting the 3rd finger over there
to the 7th fret of the 4th string.
  • 6:33 - 6:34
    So, the whole lick is:
  • 6:34 - 6:47
    . . .
  • 6:47 - 6:48
    And of course it repeats
as many times as you like,
  • 6:48 - 6:51
it's a nice little eight note lick.
  • 6:51 - 6:52
So, it also goes a bit faster,
  • 6:52 - 6:57
    . . .
  • 6:57 - 7:00
    You can also screw
with the timing a little bit on this
  • 7:00 - 7:03
and start to get the slide a little quicker
with little bit longer on the note G.
  • 7:03 - 7:07
    . . .
  • 7:07 - 7:09
OK, and lastly we've got lick number five.
  • 7:09 - 7:12
Now lick number five goes up
a little bit further than before,
  • 7:12 - 7:16
so we might have to get to Jedi
to just shift his way over a little bit,
  • 7:16 - 7:19
so I'll need to get right up here.
Can you see me in there?
  • 7:19 - 7:20
    Good, mate.
  • 7:20 - 7:24
OK, so we are starting here,
we're going to use our 2nd and 3rd fingers.
  • 7:24 - 7:27
It's quite important to use those fingers
  • 7:27 - 7:30
for reasons that I don't want to explain
    too much right now,
  • 7:30 - 7:34
but we're gonna start 2nd finger in the 8th fret,
3rd finger in the 9th fret
  • 7:34 - 7:36
    . . .
  • 7:36 - 7:40
and then we move that shape up two frets,
so we are on 10 and 11:
  • 7:40 - 7:41
    . . .
  • 7:41 - 7:45
    Up another three frets,
so we are on 13 and 14:
  • 7:45 - 7:46
    . . .
  • 7:46 - 7:50
and then we should leave our 2nd finger down
and go to the 1st and 2nd finger
  • 7:50 - 7:52
    . . .
  • 7:52 - 7:54
and you can put a curl on the 13th
    if you want to.
  • 7:54 - 7:59
You're holding the 12th still with your 1st finger
and putting a little curl with your 2nd finger
  • 7:59 - 8:00
    . . .
  • 8:00 - 8:01
    Sounds pretty cool, so:
  • 8:01 - 8:05
    . . .
  • 8:05 - 8:09
Usually played with quite a lot of strums
    on each one,
  • 8:09 - 8:12
It's really good one if you want to kind of
pick as fast as you can, and go:
  • 8:12 - 8:18
    . . .
  • 8:18 - 8:21
Gets quite funky like that. A bit of distortion,
and that lick sounds really wicked.
  • 8:21 - 8:23
But it's also just a nice way to shift
  • 8:23 - 8:29
    . . .
  • 8:29 - 8:32
You really play it with any rythm that you like.
  • 8:32 - 8:34
I hope you've had a bit of fun
    getting those licks down,
  • 8:34 - 8:37
that help you shift from one position to the next.
  • 8:37 - 8:41
Now your task is to be able to play a little solo
    with the backing track,
  • 8:41 - 8:42
hang about in position one for a while,
  • 8:42 - 8:45
use one of the licks to transfer yourself
    out into position two,
  • 8:45 - 8:49
then hang about in position two,
using your licks all the way.
  • 8:49 - 8:52
Don't just think of scale tones,
think of : position one, a few licks
  • 8:52 - 8:55
    use a lick to transcend
    between position one and two
  • 8:55 - 8:59
    (joking) or into Budha godness
    if you transcend too far.
  • 8:59 - 9:00
    Did I just said that!?
  • 9:00 - 9:03
    and into position two (laughs)
  • 9:04 - 9:06
And once you're in position two,
  • 9:06 - 9:09
you also want to play about
using the licks in position two.
  • 9:09 - 9:12
So, you are kind of using licks all the time,
as opposed to just scale tones.
  • 9:12 - 9:14
    That's really, really important.
  • 9:14 - 9:16
So, have a little bit of play about with that.
  • 9:16 - 9:19
    Also really important, of course,
is to experiment at this stage.
  • 9:19 - 9:22
    Try and take the ideas
    that I've shown you there
  • 9:22 - 9:25
and see if you can apply them
to other positions of the scales,
  • 9:25 - 9:28
especially if we get going once
we've done all of the positions,
  • 9:28 - 9:30
    you'll probably find that
that lick we've used in position one,
  • 9:30 - 9:32
    here the shifting one,
  • 9:32 - 9:35
you could use that to get from other positions
    to other positions
  • 9:35 - 9:40
Or, just as a little hint that you should definitely
check out yourself later, just not now.
  • 9:41 - 9:42
OK, I hope that it made sense.
  • 9:42 - 9:44
Play about, experiment with those things.
  • 9:44 - 9:47
Hope that helps you to get your solos
  • 9:47 - 9:50
between position one and position two
    nice and smooth,
  • 9:50 - 9:52
and I'll see you for another lesson real soon.
