Intersection: A Dream Come True

  • Not Synced
    [Music] Intersection.
    Where technology and disability meet.
  • Not Synced
    Because of his cerebral palsy
  • Not Synced
Christopher has to rely on this expensive
  • Not Synced
    clunky environmental control device if
  • Not Synced
he wants to be more independent.
  • Not Synced
For him an iPad was a dream.
  • Not Synced
Thanks to Tecla Shield and a VoiceOver
  • Not Synced
hack, Christopher can now access iOS 6,
  • Not Synced
except for gestures which are a big part
  • Not Synced
    of iOS.
  • Not Synced
Apple added Switch Control to iOS 7,
  • Not Synced
    and Mac.
  • Not Synced
So, today I'm going to get Alex
  • Not Synced
to tell you about how I use
  • Not Synced
    Switch Control in iOS 7.
  • Not Synced
    Take it away Alex!
  • Not Synced
    [Alex gives a raspberry sound]
  • Not Synced
    [Alex laughs] Alex!
  • Not Synced
Yes. Okay. Okay. I'm not going to spend
  • Not Synced
too much time showing you how to set up
  • Not Synced
Switch Control and what all the settings
  • Not Synced
do. There are great videos out there like
  • Not Synced
this one from Luis Perez that explain
  • Not Synced
this in great detail. The link is in the
  • Not Synced
description below. I want to talk about
  • Not Synced
how I use Switch Control to do almost
  • Not Synced
any gesture you can imagine without
  • Not Synced
actually doing it. You can use more than
  • Not Synced
one switch, however, I find that it is
  • Not Synced
simpler to just use one. Providing the
  • Not Synced
setting is turned on, you can double tap
  • Not Synced
with the switch to bring up a menu. This
  • Not Synced
is what makes the Switch Control feature
  • Not Synced
so great. From here, you can access the
  • Not Synced
home button, the gestures menu, the device
  • Not Synced
menu, where you can access things like
  • Not Synced
    multitasking, notification center, control
  • Not Synced
center, etc. You can also get to the
  • Not Synced
settings menu, which allows the switch
  • Not Synced
user to customize settings. The settings
  • Not Synced
menu also has a button for turning on
  • Not Synced
Point Mode. Point Mode is a very handy
  • Not Synced
feature. It allows the switch user to
  • Not Synced
access apps that are not set up for
  • Not Synced
VoiceOver. Switch Control is built on
  • Not Synced
the VoiceOver platform, which is how it
  • Not Synced
knows how to scan buttons. So, if an app
  • Not Synced
is not configured for VoiceOver, Point
  • Not Synced
Mode makes it accessible. Switch Control
  • Not Synced
is very clever. It knows when you open
  • Not Synced
an app with no buttons it can recognize.
  • Not Synced
To automatically switch to Point Mode.
  • Not Synced
Here you can see me playing The Room, a
  • Not Synced
game that would have been impossible
  • Not Synced
for me to access on iOS 6 because it has
  • Not Synced
no buttons to scan. Point Mode makes this
  • Not Synced
possible. The room also takes advantage
  • Not Synced
of all the cool gestures that Switch
  • Not Synced
Control comes with. First, there are
  • Not Synced
basic pans to move around the scenes.
  • Not Synced
Then, there are double taps for focusing
  • Not Synced
    on an object.
  • Not Synced
Then, there are hold and drags to drag
  • Not Synced
an object, such as a key.
  • Not Synced
Finally, there is an awesome gesture
  • Not Synced
allows me to turn that key.
  • Not Synced
When the camera app opens Point Mode is
  • Not Synced
    not automatically switched on because
  • Not Synced
there are buttons that Switch Control
  • Not Synced
recognizes. So, this is when the user
  • Not Synced
has to engage Point Mode manually.
  • Not Synced
Point Mode is used in the camera app for
  • Not Synced
    focusing on an object.
  • Not Synced
This is a personal preference, but I also
  • Not Synced
like to use Point Mode in Safari. I find
  • Not Synced
that when Switch Control was trying to
  • Not Synced
scan a web page, it is a bit confusing
  • Not Synced
to know what it is going to scan next,
  • Not Synced
because there are so many buttons on a
  • Not Synced
web page. Point Mode makes it quicker for
  • Not Synced
    me.
  • Not Synced
Switch Control can support many different
  • Not Synced
    Bluetooth switches, including the Apple
  • Not Synced
Wireless Keyboard. I use Tecla Shield DOS
  • Not Synced
set to White Mode. One thing to note
  • Not Synced
about using this is that the Tecla Shield
  • Not Synced
DOS sends the signal to iOS when the
  • Not Synced
switch user releases the switch. This
  • Not Synced
took me a while to get used to, because
  • Not Synced
all other switch hardware including the
  • Not Synced
first generation Tecla Shield sends a
  • Not Synced
signal as soon as the switch is pressed.
  • Not Synced
    Thanks for that Alex.
  • Not Synced
I hope you enjoyed this video and found it
  • Not Synced
    helpful.
  • Not Synced
I'll see you again next time.
  • Not Synced
    This is Christopher and Alex
  • Not Synced
    from Down Under.
