Tim Conway Preaching on the Love of Christ at a Wedding

  • 0:10 - 0:13
Before we get these two married,
  • 0:13 - 0:18
they asked me to say a word to you first.
  • 0:18 - 0:23
So what I would like to do is
  • 0:23 - 0:28
first, read to you from the Word of God.
  • 0:28 - 0:32
Now I have to caution you,
  • 0:32 - 0:38
I have done some weddings just recently
  • 0:38 - 0:41
where just simply reading this verse that
  • 0:41 - 0:42
I'm going to read to you,
  • 0:42 - 0:44
    from God's Word,
  • 0:44 - 0:48
    caused people to be angry.
  • 0:48 - 0:50
You say, oh, what does it have to do with
  • 0:50 - 0:54
    that it makes people angry?
  • 0:54 - 0:58
It has to do with a woman's reponsibility to her husband
  • 0:58 - 1:02
and the husband's responsibility to his wife.
  • 1:02 - 1:03
    That's all it is.
  • 1:03 - 1:10
It's a text from the Bible that is very suitable for
  • 1:10 - 1:14
just such an occasion as this.
  • 1:14 - 1:18
    What could it possibly say
  • 1:18 - 1:20
that would cause people to get so riled up
  • 1:20 - 1:25
and so offended and so bent out of shape at weddings.
  • 1:25 - 1:33
What could we read from the Word of God?
  • 1:33 - 1:39
I'm going to read from Ephesians 5:22 and following.
  • 1:39 - 1:43
    And I caution you already,
  • 1:43 - 1:44
    this is God's Word.
  • 1:44 - 1:49
What I tell you is on the authority of God Almighty Himself.
  • 1:49 - 1:51
    I'm not making this up.
  • 1:51 - 1:54
I want you to know that.
  • 1:54 - 2:02
"Wives, submit to your own husbands,
  • 2:02 - 2:05
    as to the Lord.
  • 2:05 - 2:09
For the husband is the head of the wife,
  • 2:09 - 2:13
even as Christ is the head of the church,
  • 2:13 - 2:21
His body, and is Himself its Savior.
  • 2:21 - 2:36
Now, as the church submits to Christ,
  • 2:36 - 2:39
so also wives should submit in everything
  • 2:39 - 2:43
    to their husbands.
  • 2:43 - 2:49
    Husbands, love your wives
  • 2:49 - 2:52
    as Christ loved the church
  • 2:52 - 2:54
and gave Himself up for her
  • 2:54 - 2:56
    that He might sanctify her,
  • 2:56 - 2:59
having cleansed her by the washing of water
  • 2:59 - 3:01
    with the Word.
  • 3:01 - 3:04
So that He might present the church to Himself
  • 3:04 - 3:07
in splendor, without spot or wrinkle
  • 3:07 - 3:11
or any such thing that she might be holy
  • 3:11 - 3:17
    and without blemish."
  • 3:17 - 3:21
Now yes, women, if you're married,
  • 3:21 - 3:25
by the authority of God, you are called
  • 3:25 - 3:27
    to submit to your husband.
  • 3:27 - 3:29
You are called to submit to your husband even
  • 3:29 - 3:35
as the church has been called to submit to Christ Himself.
  • 3:35 - 3:38
Now let's look on the other side of this thing.
  • 3:38 - 3:42
Husbands are to love as Christ loved the church.
  • 3:42 - 3:45
In other words, if we're looking for a pattern
  • 3:45 - 3:46
on how to treat our wives,
  • 3:46 - 3:48
how to live with our wives,
  • 3:48 - 3:50
how to dwell with our wives,
  • 3:50 - 3:52
    how to love our wives,
  • 3:52 - 3:54
what God wants us to know is
  • 3:54 - 3:56
    Christ Himself is the pattern.
  • 3:56 - 3:58
    He is the standard.
  • 3:58 - 4:06
His love for a spouse is the mark.
  • 4:06 - 4:08
There's no greater expression of love
  • 4:08 - 4:14
than the way Christ loves His bride, the church.
  • 4:14 - 4:17
Now men, we should stand in awe of that.
  • 4:17 - 4:20
    Here's the standard.
  • 4:20 - 4:22
Now let me tell you this,
  • 4:22 - 4:25
the apostle tells us in one place
  • 4:25 - 4:29
that the love of Christ surpasses knowledge.
  • 4:29 - 4:32
Ok, I have some knowledge. You have some knowledge.
  • 4:32 - 4:34
But the apostle says that the love that Christ has
  • 4:34 - 4:37
for His church, it surpasses knowledge.
  • 4:37 - 4:41
So, if I were going to try to explain that love to you
  • 4:41 - 4:45
in perfection today, the apostle is telling me I can't do it.
  • 4:45 - 4:50
Because it goes beyond my knowledge.
  • 4:50 - 4:52
So what I'm about to try to do
  • 4:52 - 4:54
    is literally impossible.
  • 4:54 - 4:56
In the fullness of it, it's impossible.
  • 4:56 - 4:59
For me to try to describe to you what that love is
  • 4:59 - 5:01
that Christ has for His church,
  • 5:01 - 5:04
that love that is now a pattern
  • 5:04 - 5:07
for this man as he marries this woman
  • 5:07 - 5:10
and for every other man here that's married.
  • 5:10 - 5:13
To try to describe that is simply,
  • 5:13 - 5:15
by the testimony of the Word of God itself,
  • 5:15 - 5:17
    is an impossibility.
  • 5:17 - 5:21
But I just want to try to give you a glimpse.
  • 5:21 - 5:26
By way of trying to help you realize something
  • 5:26 - 5:30
about the love that Christ has for His church.
  • 5:30 - 5:32
    Now church isn't a building.
  • 5:32 - 5:33
Some people look at this and they say,
  • 5:33 - 5:34
    "Well, this is the church."
  • 5:34 - 5:36
    That's not the church.
  • 5:36 - 5:39
    The church is God's people.
  • 5:39 - 5:42
The church are those that He purchased with his blood,
  • 5:42 - 5:46
that He gave Himself up for.
  • 5:46 - 5:48
And here, I want to try to describe this love to you
  • 5:48 - 5:53
    just a little bit.
  • 5:53 - 5:55
Let me give you an example.
  • 5:55 - 5:59
Let's suppose all of a sudden,
  • 5:59 - 6:02
all of us see at this wedding...
  • 6:02 - 6:04
We look over here, and the wedding's over,
  • 6:04 - 6:08
we all come over to where the reception's
  • 6:08 - 6:10
    going to be held.
  • 6:10 - 6:14
And suddenly we see a man standing over there.
  • 6:14 - 6:19
He is the most handsome man that you have
  • 6:19 - 6:23
ever laid eyes on in your life.
  • 6:23 - 6:25
Now, here, I'm trying to describe to you Christ's love.
  • 6:25 - 6:30
The first thing I want to tell you about it is it's unselfish.
  • 6:30 - 6:32
Let me tell you something about this.
  • 6:32 - 6:35
Let's suppose we see a man over here in the reception,
  • 6:35 - 6:39
I mean this guy is handsome.
  • 6:39 - 6:45
To you ladies, he's this drop dead gorgeous guy.
  • 6:45 - 6:46
    We see him over there.
  • 6:46 - 6:48
I mean, you have never seen a guy
  • 6:48 - 6:51
    that looks this handsome. Ever.
  • 6:51 - 6:52
He may the most handsome guy on the
  • 6:52 - 6:55
    face of the earth.
  • 6:55 - 6:57
And you see him and you begin to talk to him,
  • 6:57 - 7:00
and he tells you that he's here with his fiance.
  • 7:00 - 7:02
But he's not with her right now.
  • 7:02 - 7:05
Where is she? Maybe she's inside, she's doing something.
  • 7:05 - 7:10
The ladies' room? You don't see her.
  • 7:10 - 7:12
    And what are you imagining?
  • 7:12 - 7:17
You're imagining, no doubt, a beautiful woman
  • 7:17 - 7:18
is going to walk out of this place,
  • 7:18 - 7:21
a woman whose beauty is going to be
  • 7:21 - 7:26
    comparable to his.
  • 7:26 - 7:29
But all of a sudden, what happens?
  • 7:29 - 7:37
This bent, broken, diseased, ugly woman
  • 7:37 - 7:41
with sores all over her, I mean just hideous.
  • 7:41 - 7:43
She comes out and his face lights up
  • 7:43 - 7:46
and he looks at her and you can see it in his eyes.
  • 7:46 - 7:50
    He loves her.
  • 7:50 - 7:54
And you look and you can barely hold down your food
  • 7:54 - 8:01
she is so grotesque and disgusting to even lay your eyes on.
  • 8:01 - 8:05
Folks, I am trying to come somewhat close
  • 8:05 - 8:10
to the love that Christ has for His church.
  • 8:10 - 8:12
    Listen, His love is unselfish.
  • 8:12 - 8:15
In other words, He does not take a bride
  • 8:15 - 8:18
for anything that He sees in her.
  • 8:18 - 8:21
Folks, I am describing to you what a sinner looks like.
  • 8:21 - 8:25
The fact is that those Christ sets His love on
  • 8:25 - 8:29
    are diseased inside.
  • 8:29 - 8:32
There is filth, and there is sin,
  • 8:32 - 8:37
and there is decay, and there is death.
  • 8:37 - 8:43
Christ, when He sets His love on His church,
  • 8:43 - 8:46
He doesn't set His love there for what He can get.
  • 8:46 - 8:49
And let me tell you, that is a love that is not like our love.
  • 8:49 - 8:54
Because even the most righteous man
  • 8:54 - 8:58
sets his love on a woman and marries a woman
  • 8:58 - 9:03
for something that he sees in her.
  • 9:03 - 9:07
    But with Christ,
  • 9:07 - 9:10
    He has an unselfish love.
  • 9:10 - 9:15
Christ has chosen to come to this earth
  • 9:15 - 9:18
    and to save sinners.
  • 9:18 - 9:20
    That is His church.
  • 9:20 - 9:23
    Saved sinners.
  • 9:23 - 9:27
    What love is this?
  • 9:27 - 9:30
It is a love that doesn't have an equal.
  • 9:30 - 9:38
It is love that surpasses knowledge.
  • 9:38 - 9:43
Look, He does not set His love on people
  • 9:43 - 9:49
because of beauty He sees in them.
  • 9:49 - 9:52
In setting His love upon people,
  • 9:52 - 9:54
He has determined by that love
  • 9:54 - 9:57
    to make them beautiful.
  • 9:57 - 9:59
To make what is ugly beautiful.
  • 9:59 - 10:02
Is that not what we read?
  • 10:02 - 10:08
    He takes an ugly bride.
  • 10:08 - 10:14
I'm not saying that about Priscilla.
  • 10:14 - 10:20
What I am saying, is that's what's true of the love of Christ.
  • 10:20 - 10:27
What I'm saying is, it's easier - far, far, far easier,
  • 10:27 - 10:31
    for Andre to love Priscilla,
  • 10:31 - 10:35
than for Christ to love me.
  • 10:35 - 10:40
And what He saw in me, when He saved me.
  • 10:40 - 10:45
And when Christ takes an ugly bride, like me,
  • 10:45 - 10:48
it's in order to beautify that bride.
  • 10:48 - 10:51
Because He says it's in order to cleanse her
  • 10:51 - 10:54
by the washing of water with the Word
  • 10:54 - 10:57
so that He might present the church to Himself
  • 10:57 - 11:02
in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing,
  • 11:02 - 11:07
that she might be holy and without blemish.
  • 11:07 - 11:16
Christ loves to impart His loveliness to the object of His love.
  • 11:16 - 11:21
Look, to be loved by anybody is a joy, right?
  • 11:21 - 11:23
I mean in this world, in this life,
  • 11:23 - 11:26
one of the most precious things we have
  • 11:26 - 11:28
is to be loved by somebody.
  • 11:28 - 11:31
When you find people who are loved by nobody,
  • 11:31 - 11:33
    they're miserable people.
  • 11:33 - 11:36
To be loved by anybody is a precious thing.
  • 11:36 - 11:41
But the fact that infinite God would love sinners,
  • 11:41 - 11:46
that God the Son would choose to lay His affections -
  • 11:46 - 11:50
and look, if I told you that Christ came along and
  • 11:50 - 11:54
pitied wretched sinners, we could say,
  • 11:54 - 11:56
    "Well, we understand that."
  • 11:56 - 11:58
But if I told you that He showed mercy to sinners,
  • 11:58 - 12:02
    well, that's another thing.
  • 12:02 - 12:06
But when I tell you that Christ Himself came
  • 12:06 - 12:12
to delight in, to actually set His most, His deepest,
  • 12:12 - 12:21
His profoundest affection and love on those who are wretched...
  • 12:21 - 12:24
    Folks, if you're here today,
  • 12:24 - 12:26
and you don't know this love
  • 12:26 - 12:36
I feel sorry that you don't know this love.
  • 12:36 - 12:37
    Truly sorry.
  • 12:37 - 12:44
If you could but imagine the sweetness of that love.
  • 12:44 - 12:49
And I just want to say one thing in ending here,
  • 12:49 - 12:50
how much did He love her?
  • 12:50 - 12:52
Yes, it was unselfish love, but let me show you
  • 12:52 - 12:55
to what extents he went to love her.
  • 12:55 - 12:59
I don't doubt that Andre hasn't made sacrifices for Priscilla already.
  • 12:59 - 13:02
And God will call him to make many others,
  • 13:02 - 13:04
but what is it that Christ sacrificed?
  • 13:04 - 13:07
If we can say another thing about His love for His church,
  • 13:07 - 13:10
    it's sacrificial.
  • 13:10 - 13:11
    What did He do?
  • 13:11 - 13:15
    He gave Himself up.
  • 13:15 - 13:20
Folks, if you've ever thought of the love
  • 13:20 - 13:25
Christ has for His church as cheap
  • 13:25 - 13:29
or if it's a light thing, you need to consider this:
  • 13:29 - 13:38
When it says He gave Himself...
  • 13:38 - 13:48
it means that in order to purchase His bride,
  • 13:48 - 13:53
    He had to walk through
  • 13:53 - 13:59
    the most unimaginable horrors.
  • 13:59 - 14:03
The night before Jesus Christ went to the cross,
  • 14:03 - 14:10
He recoiled in horror so much so
  • 14:10 - 14:13
that He sweat great drops of blood.
  • 14:13 - 14:17
He said, "Father, if it's possible, take this cup away from Me.
  • 14:17 - 14:20
If there's any way else to purchase this bride."
  • 14:20 - 14:23
And His Father said there is no other way.
  • 14:23 - 14:26
There is no other way to purchase that bride.
  • 14:26 - 14:28
There is no other way to show the extent
  • 14:28 - 14:31
of the love that I have for My people
  • 14:31 - 14:33
but to endure what You must endure.
  • 14:33 - 14:35
    And what did He endure?
  • 14:35 - 14:36
    He gave Himself up.
  • 14:36 - 14:40
He gave Himself to the very wrath of God.
  • 14:40 - 14:43
He gave Himself to suffer what sin demanded.
  • 14:43 - 14:45
And He paid it to the fullest.
  • 14:45 - 14:48
He drank that cup of wrath empty.
  • 14:48 - 14:51
    Folks, that is love.
  • 14:51 - 14:55
    Sacrifice, unselfish.
  • 14:55 - 14:57
    Why?
  • 14:57 - 15:02
To purchase that bride and to purify her.
  • 15:02 - 15:05
    To make her like Him.
  • 15:05 - 15:09
And to take her where He is.
  • 15:09 - 15:13
He came from glory to get His bride.
  • 15:13 - 15:15
Whom did He come to seek?
  • 15:15 - 15:18
He came to seek and save sinners.
  • 15:18 - 15:20
And to take them to Himself.
  • 15:20 - 15:23
And take them back to glory with Him.
  • 15:23 - 15:24
    That is love.
  • 15:24 - 15:29
And there is no other love like it in this world.
  • 15:29 - 15:31
    What a standard!
  • 15:31 - 15:36
    What a standard!
  • 15:36 - 15:40
We just stand in awe of it.
  • 15:40 - 15:43
    We just stand in awe.
  • 15:43 - 15:51
And God gave us human marriage as a little picture
  • 15:51 - 15:57
of that great relationship that He, the King,
  • 15:57 - 16:04
the Great Husband, has for His bride, the church.
  • 16:04 - 16:07
Folks, that is Gospel. That is good news.
  • 16:07 - 16:09
    That is glorious!
  • 16:09 - 16:12
That is the best message for sinners
  • 16:12 - 16:17
on the face of this earth.
  • 16:17 - 16:22
And in it we see the picture of marriage.
  • 16:22 - 16:25
Which is where we want these two to be very quickly.
