    It is a head of state,

    but at the same time, it's a head of the church.

    "The Francis Effect" is an art piece

    that wants to talk about the Catholic church,

    specifically the Vatican as a political entity.

    The Vatican is a recognized state

    that was conceived out of an idea--

    in this case, a religious idea.

    So, what if we have all the places in the
    world

    in which people gathered together out of an
    idea

    and not out of a piece of land that belonged
    to your ancestors.

    That's the Pangea.

    The Pope has been very outspoken

    about treating immigrants differently.

    And he came up with the globalization of indifference,

    as a concept, that I really liked.

    I feel, like many other people,

    that this is a problem that has to be solved
    on a global scale,

    with international institutions.

    Immigrants do not need charity; they need
    papers.

    that you need

    for people who don't believe in art--

    people who don't believe in the power of ideas.

    At the same, it is a way to mobilize people

    to think the impossible, you know?

    Like, what if somebody actually decides to
    say,

    "Yes, I'll give all the immigrants in the
    world,"
  • 5:29 - 5:32
    "who are undocumented or refugees,"
  • 5:32 - 5:34
    "their papers."

    So they can be seen other than illegal or
    a negative way.

    Even if they don't sign, that they think about
    it, you know?

    And then put the little seed in their head.

    That's for me what art is.
