0:11 - 0:14Well, not many people know
that I'm 16 years old. -
0:15 - 0:17Many of you might have been 16 once.
-
0:17 - 0:18(Laughter)
-
0:18 - 0:22You know, this is the age when
you're haunted by all kinds of problems. -
0:22 - 0:25And one of those... Let's picture my day.
-
0:25 - 0:28You see, I cannot wake up by myself.
-
0:29 - 0:30It's a usual morning.
-
0:30 - 0:33My father wakes me up and says, "Osman,
good morning! What will you be?" -
0:33 - 0:36That's fine, okay. I'm off to the kitchen.
-
0:36 - 0:39My dad gives me an omelet and asks,
"Osman, what will you be?" -
0:39 - 0:43He sees me off to school and shouts,
"Study well. What will you be?" -
0:43 - 0:47You know, this question
has bothered me for a while already. -
0:47 - 0:50In fact, it's been like this
for several years. -
0:50 - 0:55My father seems to have achieved his goal.
I finally began to consider his question. -
0:56 - 0:58It happened some years ago.
-
0:58 - 1:01Like every teenager I decided,
what do I need parents for? -
1:01 - 1:02Why ask them for advice?
-
1:02 - 1:06Why would I need a family and adults?
I went to my friend instead. -
1:06 - 1:09I was in 9th grade back then.
-
1:09 - 1:12So, I came up to Kolya.
Kolya was an 11th-grader. -
1:13 - 1:15I go, "Kolya, you're so smart, so mature.
-
1:15 - 1:18Maybe you could help me?
I've got this problem." -
1:18 - 1:21He looked gravely down at me.
-
1:21 - 1:24"Yes, Osman, I'm smart. I can help you.
-
1:24 - 1:31You're going to need wits, hard work,
diligence, love, and alcohol." -
1:32 - 1:33What? Why?
-
1:33 - 1:37I was of course expecting the alcohol,
but my father is here, -
1:37 - 1:39so I'd better drop this topic.
-
1:39 - 1:40(Laughter)
-
1:40 - 1:43I hope you understand.
-
1:43 - 1:47(Applause)
-
1:47 - 1:52Then I was left with a challenge
of how to solve this problem by myself. -
1:52 - 1:56And the obvious solution for me was
to try and predict the future. -
1:57 - 2:03I think five years from now,
economists are going to be the bomb. -
2:03 - 2:05I'll be rich; everyone
will want to be an economist. -
2:05 - 2:08Everybody will need economists.
Economists will rule the world. -
2:08 - 2:11But how could I really know?
-
2:11 - 2:14The world is changing so fast
that I know nothing about tomorrow. -
2:14 - 2:17For instance, at the age of six,
I couldn't imagine -
2:17 - 2:21that people would be able
to play video games -
2:21 - 2:22and earn money from it.
-
2:22 - 2:25And what do we have now?
eSports, YouTube are getting bigger -
2:25 - 2:27and people earn
a whole lot of money from it. -
2:27 - 2:32Even kids go to computer clubs thinking,
"Let's play and make some money." -
2:32 - 2:33That's how the world's changed.
-
2:33 - 2:37Then I thought of a second,
tentative approach - however you see it. -
2:37 - 2:40So I think, I have just one year
left to study. -
2:40 - 2:42My dad will certainly come to me
by the end of my 11th grade -
2:42 - 2:46and say, "Osman, here is
a one-room flat for you to live in. -
2:46 - 2:49We'll provide you with pickles,
some canned food; you'll be just fine." -
2:49 - 2:54Excellent! So what? This is great.
I won't need to sweat. -
2:54 - 2:57But that's not who I am, I wouldn't want
to be a burden to my parents. -
2:57 - 2:59I think you wouldn't either.
-
2:59 - 3:01So for me, this is not an option.
-
3:01 - 3:05Then there is the third way:
-
3:05 - 3:07to do what I like doing.
-
3:07 - 3:11In fact, this was my motto
from the 1st to the 6th grade. -
3:11 - 3:13(Laughter)
-
3:13 - 3:15Do you want to know how it worked?
-
3:15 - 3:19I'm in 1st grade, thinking,
"Aha! Basketball, basketball. -
3:19 - 3:22I should take up basketball. I like it."
-
3:22 - 3:25I threw the ball once, threw it again.
A year went by, I quit. -
3:25 - 3:28Look, Osman, you're as short
as you've always been. -
3:28 - 3:30Why do you need it for?
I don't like it at all. -
3:30 - 3:31Screw basketball.
-
3:31 - 3:34I decided to try music.
-
3:34 - 3:38I'll play something on the guitar.
Life of every party and all, as they say. -
3:38 - 3:43So I played for a year, then another year.
Well, almost for three - and I quit. -
3:43 - 3:45Why do I need it for?
I lost my motivation then. -
3:45 - 3:48Then I took up some other sport,
swimming, I believe. -
3:48 - 3:51And again, quit it after a year.
-
3:51 - 3:54This is exactly the flaw
in that method, for me. -
3:54 - 3:57If I keep quitting everything I take up,
-
3:57 - 4:01everything I like now,
then it won't serve me in the future. -
4:01 - 4:03Every one of you has probably faced it.
-
4:03 - 4:06I don't know about you,
but I don't have one passion in life -
4:06 - 4:08to stick with for good.
-
4:08 - 4:12Then I decided that I needed
to get to the core of the problem. -
4:12 - 4:16And how do you do that?
By going back to your childhood. -
4:16 - 4:20Let's look at this little cube -
I hope everyone can see it. -
4:20 - 4:22Let's call it "Osman."
-
4:23 - 4:25It's so nice and beautiful,
and it was born in 2000. -
4:28 - 4:29What happens to it?
-
4:29 - 4:31Let's see, how was it again?
-
4:31 - 4:34He became one year old, then two, three.
-
4:34 - 4:37And what happened? He saw a TV.
-
4:38 - 4:41He's sitting on a carpet,
like this, watching TV. -
4:41 - 4:43Wow, that's it!
-
4:43 - 4:46He is watching the movie
"Toy Story" and realizes, -
4:46 - 4:48"This is my hero,
Buzz Lightyear! That's it! -
4:48 - 4:51I want to be like Buzz Lightyear,
I'll become Buzz Lightyear." -
4:51 - 4:57And at that moment, the little cube
of his life, the "Osman-cube," turns. -
4:57 - 5:02Some ten minutes pass, he's watching
the cartoon "Well, Just You Wait!" -
5:02 - 5:05He looks at the Wolf, at the Hare.
"I'm going to protect hares." -
5:05 - 5:07The cube turns once again.
-
5:07 - 5:10Then he watches another movie,
the cube turns again. -
5:10 - 5:12Another movie, and the cube turns again.
-
5:12 - 5:16It goes on like that until first grade,
when he's six years old. -
5:16 - 5:21The Osman cube goes to school
and hears his friend Petya say, -
5:21 - 5:23"Osman, basketball is cool!
-
5:23 - 5:25They get lots of money.
-
5:25 - 5:27Basketball players do.
Go into basketball." -
5:27 - 5:30I think, "Well, fine" -
and I turn the cube. -
5:30 - 5:35Then in ten minutes, at another break,
it hears another friend. -
5:35 - 5:39"No, basketball is not at all cool,
they earn less than soccer players. -
5:39 - 5:41Go for soccer," and the cube
turned once again. -
5:41 - 5:45Then his parents signed him up
for music school, and the cube turned. -
5:45 - 5:50It turns and turns and turns...
until he is in 11th grade. -
5:50 - 5:54The cube is already messed up.
I don't even know how to solve it. -
5:54 - 5:58And you know what scares me?
I'm in 10th grade now, -
5:58 - 6:01and I imagine what will happen in a year.
-
6:01 - 6:04I'm at my prom. Everybody's happy
and all, I am wearing a suit... -
6:04 - 6:10And the moment comes when I hear,
"Osman, go! Go and earn some money!" -
6:10 - 6:11(Laughter)
-
6:11 - 6:13Well, you're laughing now, but...
-
6:14 - 6:18(Applause)
-
6:18 - 6:23But what prevents a CEO in some
technology company from saying, -
6:23 - 6:25"Well, programmer, go, go.
Your job is extinct. -
6:25 - 6:27Robots do it now. Go!"
-
6:27 - 6:29It can happen. And in that,
we are the same. -
6:29 - 6:33Each of us is at a point, say point A,
-
6:33 - 6:35and is afraid that at a certain point, B,
-
6:35 - 6:38their profession
will no longer be relevant. -
6:38 - 6:41I'm only 16, I've got time to experiment.
-
6:41 - 6:43(Laughter)
-
6:43 - 6:50(Applause) (Cheers)
-
6:50 - 6:54That's when I thought, "Osman,
you need to come up with a genius idea. -
6:54 - 6:57Something so cool that you
and everybody else would like it." -
6:58 - 7:01And that's when I got to thinking.
-
7:02 - 7:04Suppose, in a year or two, or maybe four,
-
7:04 - 7:07I'll get a degree in Economics.
-
7:07 - 7:11Do you see this side in front of you?
That will be my education in Economics. -
7:11 - 7:13My summa cum laude,
or maybe just cum laude, I don't know. -
7:13 - 7:18And if, having graduated,
I will keep working for several years -
7:18 - 7:21as an economist, I'll be turning
this one side all the time. -
7:21 - 7:24I'll keep turning and turning it
until my retirement. -
7:24 - 7:27That's it. And what will I do next?
-
7:27 - 7:32I'm forgetting about this other part
of my cube that once played basketball, -
7:32 - 7:34the guitar, went swimming and so forth.
-
7:34 - 7:36And a relevant topic now...
-
7:36 - 7:40I can give you a good example
of a relevant topic at this moment. -
7:40 - 7:44There were these two guys some years ago,
I don't remember exactly. -
7:45 - 7:49They worked in, say, economics.
Economics was one of their sides. -
7:49 - 7:53Their other side was into neurobiology,
they were interested in it. -
7:53 - 7:56And another, third side,
was interested in, say, psychology. -
7:56 - 7:59And those guys combined
the three sides of their cubes -
7:59 - 8:01and created a new science, neuroeconomics,
-
8:01 - 8:04which is now developing quite fast.
-
8:05 - 8:08New professions and new jobs appear.
-
8:09 - 8:13People value neuroeconomists,
they are in demand, they are needed. -
8:13 - 8:17And by that I wanted to show you
that instead of looking for something, -
8:17 - 8:19choosing a profession,
you can create your own, -
8:19 - 8:22where you'll use every side of your cube
-
8:22 - 8:24with maximum efficiency.
-
8:25 - 8:27You will live up to your full potential.
-
8:27 - 8:30And by creating your own profession,
you will no longer need to choose. -
8:31 - 8:32Thank you.
-
8:32 - 8:34(Applause)
