Few People Make it to Heaven - Tim Conway

  • 0:05 - 0:17
Well, I want to ask you guys a question.
  • 0:17 - 0:23
    Now think with me here.
  • 0:23 - 0:27
If Jesus walked in here tonight,
  • 0:27 - 0:30
    He did walk this earth.
  • 0:30 - 0:35
    God became flesh.
  • 0:35 - 0:41
He walked this earth as a man.
  • 0:41 - 0:43
Many saw Him. Many talked with Him.
  • 0:43 - 0:47
    Let's suppose the Lord Jesus
  • 0:47 - 0:51
came back to the earth bodily.
  • 0:51 - 0:56
Just as He was 2000 years ago,
  • 0:56 - 0:58
and He walked into this place tonight.
  • 0:58 - 1:01
And instead of me up here,
  • 1:01 - 1:05
    He came up.
  • 1:05 - 1:09
And you had the opportunity to ask Him
  • 1:09 - 1:14
any questions you wanted to ask Him at all.
  • 1:14 - 1:16
    What would you ask Him?
  • 1:16 - 1:17
    Anybody have any idea
  • 1:17 - 1:19
    what they might ask Him?
  • 1:19 - 1:21
I mean, if He came up here,
  • 1:21 - 1:24
and He was at your disposal
  • 1:24 - 1:25
    to answer questions...
  • 1:25 - 1:28
    Now, you have to think.
  • 1:28 - 1:31
    This is the God-man.
  • 1:31 - 1:34
He has the right answer for any question
  • 1:34 - 1:37
    that you might ask Him.
  • 1:37 - 1:42
    What would you ask Him?
  • 1:42 - 1:45
I'll tell you, I would have some questions
  • 1:45 - 1:48
    I'd want to ask Him.
  • 1:48 - 1:50
It was that way with His disciples
  • 1:50 - 1:52
    when He walked this earth.
  • 1:52 - 1:53
    There were times that they did ask Him;
  • 1:53 - 1:55
there were times that they wanted to ask Him,
  • 1:55 - 1:57
but they were afraid to ask Him.
  • 1:57 - 1:58
And He knew they were afraid,
  • 1:58 - 2:02
and He would ask them what they wanted to ask Him.
  • 2:02 - 2:06
But, anything come to your minds?
  • 2:06 - 2:08
Anything at all come to your mind
  • 2:08 - 2:10
that if Jesus Christ was here right now
  • 2:10 - 2:12
that you would want to ask Him.
  • 2:12 - 2:14
    What would you ask Him?
  • 2:14 - 2:15
    (from the room)
  • 2:15 - 2:17
Why is it so hard to get out of the flesh?
  • 2:17 - 2:19
So hard to go from flesh to the Spirit?
  • 2:19 - 2:21
Tim: Why is it so hard to go
  • 2:21 - 2:24
from the flesh to the Spirit?
  • 2:24 - 2:26
    Why is it hard?
  • 2:26 - 2:27
    (from the room)
  • 2:27 - 2:29
I mean, I know it's supposed to be hard,
  • 2:29 - 2:31
but some days it just seems really hard.
  • 2:31 - 2:35
    Tim: Sin is entrenched deep.
  • 2:35 - 2:37
    It's not only hard.
  • 2:37 - 2:41
It's impossible aside from the power of God.
  • 2:41 - 2:43
In fact, it takes a miracle of
  • 2:43 - 2:48
    creational power to free man
  • 2:48 - 2:50
    from the power of sin.
  • 2:50 - 2:52
    It's so strong.
  • 2:52 - 2:54
    Anybody have another question
  • 2:54 - 2:58
    that they'd ask?
  • 2:58 - 3:07
    How about this one?
  • 3:07 - 3:09
Lord, how many of the people here
  • 3:09 - 3:13
    are truly saved?
  • 3:13 - 3:21
Lord, are there going to be many saved?
  • 3:21 - 3:22
    Do you know what?
  • 3:22 - 3:24
We don't have to guess at the answer
  • 3:24 - 3:25
    to that question.
  • 3:25 - 3:28
    Do you know why?
  • 3:28 - 3:30
Because His disciples in Luke 13
  • 3:30 - 3:32
    asked Him that exact question.
  • 3:32 - 3:36
Lord, are there many going to be saved?
  • 3:36 - 3:40
    Now you remember this:
  • 3:40 - 3:45
This is God in the flesh.
  • 3:45 - 3:47
This is the One who knows
  • 3:47 - 3:50
    all the right answers.
  • 3:50 - 3:51
This is the One that even knows
  • 3:51 - 3:54
the questions that ought to be asked.
  • 3:54 - 3:57
    His disciples asked Him,
  • 3:57 - 4:00
"Lord, are there many going to be saved?"
  • 4:00 - 4:04
And do you know what He said?
  • 4:04 - 4:07
It was so common with our Lord
  • 4:07 - 4:12
to take a question and make it
  • 4:12 - 4:16
    real personal to people.
  • 4:16 - 4:18
He didn't just say yes or no.
  • 4:18 - 4:29
He said guys, this question pertains to you.
  • 4:29 - 4:30
    You've asked the question,
  • 4:30 - 4:34
    "Will many be saved?"
  • 4:34 - 4:38
    What in the world?
  • 4:38 - 4:42
What do you think the answer is to that question?
  • 4:42 - 4:46
    I can tell you this.
  • 4:46 - 4:50
    That from time to time,
  • 4:50 - 4:51
the church I was at before
  • 4:51 - 4:53
    the one I'm at now,
  • 4:53 - 4:55
and then where I am right now,
  • 4:55 - 4:59
I've talked to a lot of people on the streets
  • 4:59 - 5:03
and I've talked to a lot of people at their front doors
  • 5:03 - 5:07
    in some door-to-door evangelism.
  • 5:07 - 5:10
    I've been in nursing homes
  • 5:10 - 5:16
    and in prisons.
  • 5:16 - 5:20
And do you know what most people believe?
  • 5:20 - 5:22
Most people are on their way to heaven.
  • 5:22 - 5:25
Most people are going to glory.
  • 5:25 - 5:28
    I can remember Matt
  • 5:28 - 5:31
    (Matt preached last night)
  • 5:31 - 5:33
Matt and I went to a little housing complex
  • 5:33 - 5:35
right there by where we live
  • 5:35 - 5:37
and I remember one young lady,
  • 5:37 - 5:39
    we asked her,
  • 5:39 - 5:42
    are you going to heaven?
  • 5:42 - 5:43
    And she said,
  • 5:43 - 5:51
Well, I'm on the church choir.
  • 5:51 - 5:54
In other words, what was her answer
  • 5:54 - 5:56
    by saying that?
  • 5:56 - 5:58
    Yes. I'm going there.
  • 5:58 - 5:59
    And you know what?
  • 5:59 - 6:03
You go down through this complex
  • 6:03 - 6:05
and you go from door to door to door,
  • 6:05 - 6:09
and you spend years and decades even
  • 6:09 - 6:11
talking to people about their souls
  • 6:11 - 6:12
    and guess what you find?
  • 6:12 - 6:14
    Everybody's going to heaven.
  • 6:14 - 6:16
Everybody's got that taken care of.
  • 6:16 - 6:19
Do you know why they've got it taken care of?
  • 6:19 - 6:20
Because just like many of you here
  • 6:20 - 6:22
    they said that little prayer.
  • 6:22 - 6:25
    You know, that was me.
  • 6:25 - 6:28
Growing up I remember I'd find a little tract
  • 6:28 - 6:29
and it had this sinner's prayer on the back,
  • 6:29 - 6:31
and I'd say that sinner's prayer,
  • 6:31 - 6:32
and I thought, you know the Bible says
  • 6:32 - 6:35
something about believing in Jesus Christ
  • 6:35 - 6:36
and I believe that He was true
  • 6:36 - 6:39
so I must be on my way.
  • 6:39 - 6:42
And you know what the vast majority
  • 6:42 - 6:47
of people around us believe just that.
  • 6:47 - 6:48
You can look at the percentage of people
  • 6:48 - 6:50
that believe they're on their way to heaven.
  • 6:50 - 6:53
Here were the disciples, and they came to the
  • 6:53 - 6:56
    Man, the God-man, who knows
  • 6:56 - 6:58
    the answer to that question.
  • 6:58 - 7:00
They said, "Lord, are there many
  • 7:00 - 7:01
    going to be saved?"
  • 7:01 - 7:03
And He threw it right in their lap.
  • 7:03 - 7:08
    And He said, "You..."
  • 7:08 - 7:11
    You. This pertains to you.
  • 7:11 - 7:13
He says I'm going to tell you
  • 7:13 - 7:16
you better strive to enter in.
  • 7:16 - 7:17
Because there are going to be many
  • 7:17 - 7:20
that are going to seek to get in there
  • 7:20 - 7:22
and they're not going to be able to.
  • 7:22 - 7:25
Many are not going to be able to get in.
  • 7:25 - 7:26
    That's in Luke 13.
  • 7:26 - 7:27
    Back in Matthwew 7,
  • 7:27 - 7:31
    Jesus said it this way:
  • 7:31 - 7:37
"Few there be that find it."
  • 7:37 - 7:39
    You know what?
  • 7:39 - 7:42
Twenty years ago when I first came to Christ,
  • 7:42 - 7:45
    that was an astounding verse.
  • 7:45 - 7:47
    Even though I was saved,
  • 7:47 - 7:50
that scared me, that shocked me.
  • 7:50 - 7:55
Jesus Christ in Matthew 7:14 says
  • 7:55 - 8:03
"Few there be that find it."
  • 8:03 - 8:05
    Listen.
  • 8:05 - 8:09
Not only are few going to find it,
  • 8:09 - 8:12
    but He says that many
  • 8:12 - 8:15
    that want to get in,
  • 8:15 - 8:19
    won't be able.
  • 8:19 - 8:24
    Does that terrify anybody?
  • 8:24 - 8:27
    It ought to.
  • 8:27 - 8:31
It ought to in a day and an age
  • 8:31 - 8:33
    when everybody just believes
  • 8:33 - 8:36
getting to heaven is an easy thing.
  • 8:36 - 8:40
The fact is, Jesus said it's a hard thing.
  • 8:40 - 8:44
This may sound shocking to some of you.
  • 8:44 - 8:46
You may not have heard this before.
  • 8:46 - 8:47
    You know why?
  • 8:47 - 8:49
    Because it's very likely that
  • 8:49 - 8:52
many of you are exposed to the idea today
  • 8:52 - 8:55
that one, being saved is easy,
  • 8:55 - 8:59
two, God just hovers around out there
  • 8:59 - 9:02
right over your head wanting to do you good,
  • 9:02 - 9:03
    wanting to make you rich,
  • 9:03 - 9:05
    wanting to give you health,
  • 9:05 - 9:07
    wanting to give you everything
  • 9:07 - 9:09
    that your heart desires.
  • 9:09 - 9:13
Basically, that's the religion of today.
  • 9:13 - 9:15
You come to God and He's just going to
  • 9:15 - 9:17
    make you happy.
  • 9:17 - 9:19
He's going to give you everything you want.
  • 9:19 - 9:21
He's going to make life prosperous for you.
  • 9:21 - 9:23
He's going to make sure you get a good job,
  • 9:23 - 9:27
beautiful spouse, that you're not going to be sick.
  • 9:27 - 9:28
    That's basically what's taught today.
  • 9:28 - 9:31
Come to God and you'll be able to speak in tongues
  • 9:31 - 9:34
and rattle off and do all sorts of crazy things,
  • 9:34 - 9:36
and you'll be able to run around
  • 9:36 - 9:37
and it will just be one big
  • 9:37 - 9:39
    exciting, fun thing.
  • 9:39 - 9:41
And you'll probably get rich in the midst of it
  • 9:41 - 9:43
    if you've got enough faith.
  • 9:43 - 9:45
    That's basically what's said today.
  • 9:45 - 9:48
    And here's Jesus,
  • 9:48 - 9:51
the One who had the answers.
  • 9:51 - 9:57
And He says, "Few there be that find it."
  • 9:57 - 9:58
And if you've got a Bible,,
  • 9:58 - 10:00
    I see a lot of you don't,
  • 10:00 - 10:02
if you've got a Bible, you can look there.
  • 10:02 - 10:09
Not only does He say in Matthew 7:13-14,
  • 10:09 - 10:10
    He not only says that
  • 10:10 - 10:13
"Few there be that find it,"
  • 10:13 - 10:21
He says the way to get there is hard.
  • 10:21 - 10:25
    That doesn't sound like what's
  • 10:25 - 10:30
    being taught today, does it?
  • 10:30 - 10:32
    I mean, come on,
  • 10:32 - 10:34
you guys be honest with me.
  • 10:34 - 10:36
    Is this something you hear?
  • 10:36 - 10:38
What I'm telling you right now.
  • 10:38 - 10:39
That few there be that find it,
  • 10:39 - 10:41
and that getting there is hard,
  • 10:41 - 10:42
and many are going to seek to get in there
  • 10:42 - 10:43
and they're not going to be able.
  • 10:43 - 10:45
Is that new to any of you?
  • 10:45 - 10:51
Or is that just, oh yeah, we hear that all the time?
  • 10:51 - 10:54
    What do you think?
  • 10:54 - 10:58
Well, let me throw this in your lap.
  • 10:58 - 11:01
If few there be that find it,
  • 11:01 - 11:04
and many that think they're going there
  • 11:04 - 11:05
and are trying to go there,
  • 11:05 - 11:08
don't in the end get in,
  • 11:08 - 11:09
    and only few find it,
  • 11:09 - 11:17
    and the way is hard,
  • 11:17 - 11:21
    then is it not likely...
  • 11:21 - 11:24
By default, if few there be that find it,
  • 11:24 - 11:25
    then what?
  • 11:25 - 11:28
    What's the opposite?
  • 11:28 - 11:31
    Many don't find it.
  • 11:31 - 11:33
And if you don't find life,
  • 11:33 - 11:34
    what do you find?
  • 11:34 - 11:36
    Death.
  • 11:36 - 11:39
    It says destruction.
  • 11:39 - 11:42
    So if many find destruction,
  • 11:42 - 11:47
    and few find life,
  • 11:47 - 11:50
is it not likely that among this group
  • 11:50 - 11:52
that I talk to right now,
  • 11:52 - 11:54
is there not a great possibility
  • 11:54 - 11:55
that many of you are going to
  • 11:55 - 11:57
    find destruction?
  • 11:57 - 11:59
And only few of you are going to find life?
  • 11:59 - 12:01
    Is that not consistent with
  • 12:01 - 12:03
    what Jesus is teaching there?
  • 12:03 - 12:05
    Is that not concerning?
  • 12:05 - 12:07
    Does the word "destruction" just
  • 12:07 - 12:10
go over your head and through your ears
  • 12:10 - 12:15
and off your back as just a light matter?
  • 12:15 - 12:20
Let me describe destruction for you.
  • 12:20 - 12:22
You know Jesus gave us the
  • 12:22 - 12:25
    most vivid descriptions.
  • 12:25 - 12:29
    He called it outer darkness,
  • 12:29 - 12:31
    a place of torment,
  • 12:31 - 12:33
    a place of weeping,
  • 12:33 - 12:35
    gnashing of teeth,
  • 12:35 - 12:37
    a place of fiery furnace,
  • 12:37 - 12:40
a place where there smoke of the torment
  • 12:40 - 12:42
of the people that are there
  • 12:42 - 12:44
    go up forever and forever.
  • 12:44 - 12:47
It speaks about the fury and the wrath
  • 12:47 - 12:51
    of God the Almighty.
  • 12:51 - 12:56
You know why there's weeping there?
  • 12:56 - 13:01
Do you know why some of you will weep there?
  • 13:01 - 13:03
Some of you that hear my voice,
  • 13:03 - 13:06
will indeed, I have no doubt,
  • 13:06 - 13:11
    weep in that place,
  • 13:11 - 13:14
    for a variety of reasons,
  • 13:14 - 13:15
but one of them is this:
  • 13:15 - 13:19
Listen: You know the devil fell.
  • 13:19 - 13:23
    The devil was an angel.
  • 13:23 - 13:28
The devil and a third of the angels of heaven
  • 13:28 - 13:29
    fell into sin.
  • 13:29 - 13:31
    And do you realize this?
  • 13:31 - 13:35
When they fell, that was it.
  • 13:35 - 13:39
    Their judgment was final.
  • 13:39 - 13:44
Do you realize you were not the first to sin?
  • 13:44 - 13:50
The devils, the demons, they sinned first.
  • 13:50 - 13:52
God never sent them a Savior.
  • 13:52 - 13:55
God never sent them a way of escape.
  • 13:55 - 13:58
God never sent them a remedy for their sin.
  • 13:58 - 13:59
    God never offered them hope,
  • 13:59 - 14:01
    never offered them heaven,
  • 14:01 - 14:04
never offered them good, grace, mercy.
  • 14:04 - 14:06
    They were damned.
  • 14:06 - 14:08
In fact, we're told that the lake of fire
  • 14:08 - 14:13
    was created exactly for them.
  • 14:13 - 14:15
Do you know one of the reasons that
  • 14:15 - 14:19
some of you will weep in destruction
  • 14:19 - 14:25
    the way you will weep?
  • 14:25 - 14:29
Can you imagine if as a demon,
  • 14:29 - 14:32
you find yourself in the lake of fire?
  • 14:32 - 14:35
The fiery furnace where there is fire
  • 14:35 - 14:40
and brimstone and torment for your sin.
  • 14:40 - 14:43
Can you imagine if you were them
  • 14:43 - 14:47
    and you find yourself there?
  • 14:47 - 14:53
There will be sorrow on their part.
  • 14:53 - 14:55
There will be torment, there will be pain.
  • 14:55 - 14:57
There will be anguish, there will be sighs,
  • 14:57 - 14:59
    and groans and wails.
  • 14:59 - 15:05
But can you imagine if you find yourself there?
  • 15:05 - 15:08
After God sent His Son into this world
  • 15:08 - 15:11
    to save sinners?
  • 15:11 - 15:14
Can you imagine if you find yourself
  • 15:14 - 15:16
in the lake of fire when
  • 15:16 - 15:19
there was a way offered you out?
  • 15:19 - 15:21
When a Savior came into the world
  • 15:21 - 15:23
    who came specifically
  • 15:23 - 15:25
    to seek and save sinners?
  • 15:25 - 15:27
When mankind was given a remedy
  • 15:27 - 15:28
    for his sin?
  • 15:28 - 15:31
    And not only that?
  • 15:31 - 15:34
But you remember back to that time
  • 15:34 - 15:37
in June of 2010 when people came
  • 15:37 - 15:39
from this church on the east side of
  • 15:39 - 15:41
    San Antonio and they came
  • 15:41 - 15:44
and they told you about Christ
  • 15:44 - 15:46
and they showed you the way out,
  • 15:46 - 15:48
and they told you the Gospel,
  • 15:48 - 15:50
and they said that if you would flee to Christ
  • 15:50 - 15:53
you could find salvation from your sin.
  • 15:53 - 15:56
    Can you imagine what weeping?
  • 15:56 - 15:59
It says weeping and gnashing of teeth.
  • 15:59 - 16:01
Do you know what gnashing of teeth is?
  • 16:01 - 16:03
    Can you imagine?
  • 16:03 - 16:06
    I had it.
  • 16:06 - 16:11
I had it. It was set right there before me.
  • 16:11 - 16:15
And I said, Nope. I want my sin.
  • 16:15 - 16:17
I don't want Christ. I want my sin.
  • 16:17 - 16:19
I'm still young. I want sex.
  • 16:19 - 16:21
I want the fun. I want the party.
  • 16:21 - 16:24
I want what this world has to offer.
  • 16:24 - 16:26
    And I don't want Christ.
  • 16:26 - 16:28
I'm going to go drink deep of this world
  • 16:28 - 16:32
and maybe sometime else, I'll take care of that.
  • 16:32 - 16:34
And all the time, God was saying,
  • 16:34 - 16:36
That was the day of salvation!
  • 16:36 - 16:39
This day is the day of salvation,
  • 16:39 - 16:41
    and you passed it by.
  • 16:41 - 16:42
    And now you're damned,
  • 16:42 - 16:44
and you're in that lake of fire,
  • 16:44 - 16:45
    and you had it.
  • 16:45 - 16:48
    It was right there!
  • 16:48 - 16:50
    It's like Christ said,
  • 16:50 - 16:55
    He offers you drink.
  • 16:55 - 16:58
And He says, if you will,
  • 16:58 - 17:00
He says, drink the water of life.
  • 17:00 - 17:01
    Drink freely.
  • 17:01 - 17:03
    Come take it.
  • 17:03 - 17:06
    If you will, whosoever will.
  • 17:06 - 17:09
    Come and drink.
  • 17:09 - 17:12
And you will grind your teeth
  • 17:12 - 17:15
    at the thought,
  • 17:15 - 17:19
    "What a fool I was!"
  • 17:19 - 17:21
    And you will weep,
  • 17:21 - 17:24
not only because you were a fool,
  • 17:24 - 17:25
    you will weep because
  • 17:25 - 17:30
eternity will be placarded over everything.
  • 17:30 - 17:33
Your torment isn't for a moment.
  • 17:33 - 17:35
You know what it's like when we get sick.
  • 17:35 - 17:38
You know what it's like when we get injured.
  • 17:38 - 17:39
    There's always this hope,
  • 17:39 - 17:41
God created our bodies to heal.
  • 17:41 - 17:43
Well, I won't be sick for long.
  • 17:43 - 17:45
I won't have to suffer for long,
  • 17:45 - 17:47
even if I'm experiencing this pain,
  • 17:47 - 17:48
    the pain goes away.
  • 17:48 - 17:50
You get cut, you get the break, you get the scratch,
  • 17:50 - 17:58
you get injured, the sprain, it heals.
  • 17:58 - 18:03
But in hell, there is no healing.
  • 18:03 - 18:07
    It's forever and forever
  • 18:07 - 18:13
    and forever and forever...
  • 18:13 - 18:19
Few there be that find it.
  • 18:19 - 18:22
    So here's what Jesus said,
  • 18:22 - 18:27
He said ok here's what this is like,
  • 18:27 - 18:29
    it's like two gates.
  • 18:29 - 18:33
    You can understand a gate.
  • 18:33 - 18:36
    There are gates in fences.
  • 18:36 - 18:39
Sometimes you find gates in a wall.
  • 18:39 - 18:40
    A gate.
  • 18:40 - 18:43
A gate is simply a sort of door, right?
  • 18:43 - 18:46
And Jesus says this is how it is.
  • 18:46 - 18:52
    You have a narrow gate,
  • 18:52 - 18:55
and you have a very wide gate.
  • 18:55 - 18:56
    Two gates.
  • 18:56 - 19:03
And both of the gates are places that we enter.
  • 19:03 - 19:05
A gate is for entering, right?
  • 19:05 - 19:07
    People walk through gates.
  • 19:07 - 19:09
    That's what they're there for.
  • 19:09 - 19:13
And Jesus says that on both sides of these gates,
  • 19:13 - 19:15
    there's a path.
  • 19:15 - 19:18
    There's a way.
  • 19:18 - 19:19
    You have the narrow gate,
  • 19:19 - 19:21
    and beyond the narrow gate
  • 19:21 - 19:23
    is a narrow way.
  • 19:23 - 19:25
    And it's difficult.
  • 19:25 - 19:30
Over here, you have a wide gate,
  • 19:30 - 19:34
followed by a very broad path.
  • 19:34 - 19:39
    And Jesus says it's easy.
  • 19:39 - 19:41
And you know what He says?
  • 19:41 - 19:47
Few go in the narrow one.
  • 19:47 - 19:53
The vast multitudes go in over here.
  • 19:53 - 19:57
You say, but I go to church.
  • 19:57 - 20:03
You know, the people on the broad way,
  • 20:03 - 20:07
we find just a few verses down
  • 20:07 - 20:10
    in Matthew 7
  • 20:10 - 20:13
    these people went to church.
  • 20:13 - 20:17
In verse 21, there are people that say,
  • 20:17 - 20:20
    "Lord, Lord..."
  • 20:20 - 20:21
They're people that use His name.
  • 20:21 - 20:23
    They're people that sang songs
  • 20:23 - 20:26
    just like were sung tonight.
  • 20:26 - 20:28
They had the name Lord on their lips.
  • 20:28 - 20:29
And if you look at verse 22,
  • 20:29 - 20:32
    they were doing things:
  • 20:32 - 20:34
    prophesying and casting out demons,
  • 20:34 - 20:37
    doing many mighty works.
  • 20:37 - 20:40
See, they were in the church crowd.
  • 20:40 - 20:41
    See, that's no protection.
  • 20:41 - 20:44
Jesus doesn't say going to church
  • 20:44 - 20:47
    is the way.
  • 20:47 - 20:49
    So you have the narrow;
  • 20:49 - 20:50
    you have the broad.
  • 20:50 - 20:51
    Guess what?
  • 20:51 - 20:55
The crowds are going in over here.
  • 20:55 - 20:58
Few there be that go in this way.
  • 20:58 - 21:00
    And you know what?
  • 21:00 - 21:01
Not only is there a gate.
  • 21:01 - 21:03
Not only is there a path beyond it.
  • 21:03 - 21:05
    But there's an end.
  • 21:05 - 21:08
    There's a big gate, a large way,
  • 21:08 - 21:10
    at the end, destruction.
  • 21:10 - 21:13
Narrow gate, followed by a narrow path,
  • 21:13 - 21:18
    at the end, eternal life.
  • 21:18 - 21:22
Few there be that find it.
  • 21:22 - 21:25
    Does that concern anybody here
  • 21:25 - 21:30
that you may be headed to destruction?
  • 21:30 - 21:32
    How can you know?
  • 21:32 - 21:35
How can you know if you're on that narrow way?
  • 21:35 - 21:36
    Let me tell you this:
  • 21:36 - 21:39
Few there be that find it.
  • 21:39 - 21:40
    You know what that means?
  • 21:40 - 21:43
That means those on their way to heaven
  • 21:43 - 21:46
    are in the minority.
  • 21:46 - 21:48
And you know what that means?
  • 21:48 - 21:51
That's means one thing's for certain,
  • 21:51 - 21:54
that those that are on their way to heaven,
  • 21:54 - 21:59
    they've left the crowd.
  • 21:59 - 22:01
You see, I know some of you.
  • 22:01 - 22:04
You go to church, you have parents that go to church.
  • 22:04 - 22:08
    you're here at the camp.
  • 22:08 - 22:10
You say well that must mean something.
  • 22:10 - 22:12
The vast multitudes of San Antonio
  • 22:12 - 22:17
they're not in church tonight but I am.
  • 22:17 - 22:19
    But like I said,
  • 22:19 - 22:22
Jesus shows us a little further,
  • 22:22 - 22:23
many of the people on this broad way
  • 22:23 - 22:25
over here, they're people that go to church.
  • 22:25 - 22:27
They're people that say, "Lord, Lord."
  • 22:27 - 22:32
They're people doing many mighty works.
  • 22:32 - 22:35
    I know some of you.
  • 22:35 - 22:39
You've got a little bit of religion.
  • 22:39 - 22:43
But you, aside from that little religion,
  • 22:43 - 22:45
you are just like the world.
  • 22:45 - 22:48
You are just like the multitudes.
  • 22:48 - 22:51
    You're just like the crowd.
  • 22:51 - 22:58
    Because the truth is,
  • 22:58 - 23:01
you play the same video games
  • 23:01 - 23:05
    that the world plays.
  • 23:05 - 23:06
And you go to the same movies
  • 23:06 - 23:09
    that the world goes to.
  • 23:09 - 23:12
You laugh at the same things
  • 23:12 - 23:15
    that the world laughs at.
  • 23:15 - 23:17
    Watch the same t.v. shows
  • 23:17 - 23:19
    that the world watches.
  • 23:19 - 23:23
You love the fashions of the world.
  • 23:23 - 23:27
The idols of the world, the rock stars,
  • 23:27 - 23:30
the movie stars, the sports stars.
  • 23:30 - 23:33
    They're your idols as well.
  • 23:33 - 23:34
    The cars the world loves,
  • 23:34 - 23:36
    the motorcycles the world loves,
  • 23:36 - 23:39
the fashions they love, the magazines they love.
  • 23:39 - 23:41
    You love the same.
  • 23:41 - 23:43
    You may have some conservative
  • 23:43 - 23:45
parents that don't let you stay up as late
  • 23:45 - 23:46
    or don't let you watch,
  • 23:46 - 23:48
but you know in your heart
  • 23:48 - 23:49
    you desire those same things.
  • 23:49 - 23:50
    You want them.
  • 23:50 - 23:54
The truth is, you're just like the crowd.
  • 23:54 - 23:58
Folks, the crowd is on the way to destruction.
  • 23:58 - 23:59
    And it's easy.
  • 23:59 - 24:02
    You see, it's easy because
  • 24:02 - 24:03
    you can be religious.
  • 24:03 - 24:04
    You can play religion.
  • 24:04 - 24:07
You can say, hey, I said the sinner's prayer.
  • 24:07 - 24:09
    I did the little deal.
  • 24:09 - 24:11
    And it's real easy.
  • 24:11 - 24:13
Because you can just go along with the crowd,
  • 24:13 - 24:15
you can go along with the world,
  • 24:15 - 24:17
you can go along with the flow.
  • 24:17 - 24:19
    And Jesus says there's destruction
  • 24:19 - 24:20
    at the end of it.
  • 24:20 - 24:23
You know what He says in Matthew 7:23?
  • 24:23 - 24:27
    He says, "Depart from Me,
  • 24:27 - 24:31
    you workers of lawlessness."
  • 24:31 - 24:33
You see, the real issue is,
  • 24:33 - 24:35
though you have a little bit of religion,
  • 24:35 - 24:38
you're just as lawless as the world.
  • 24:38 - 24:41
    You love sin.
  • 24:41 - 24:47
You love what Jesus came into the world
  • 24:47 - 24:50
    to save us from.
  • 24:50 - 24:53
Few there be that find it.
  • 24:53 - 24:58
    That should startle you guys.
  • 24:58 - 25:04
    Look, our lives are...
  • 25:04 - 25:08
    the sands of time.
  • 25:08 - 25:12
You guys have seen an hourglass.
  • 25:12 - 25:16
    And the sand falls.
  • 25:16 - 25:19
And there's only so much sand in there, right?
  • 25:19 - 25:23
    You've seen an hourglass?
  • 25:23 - 25:25
    There's only so much sand.
  • 25:25 - 25:28
    That's your life.
  • 25:28 - 25:30
Your life only has so much sand.
  • 25:30 - 25:33
    The time alotted to you
  • 25:33 - 25:34
    is falling right now.
  • 25:34 - 25:36
    It's very limited.
  • 25:36 - 25:39
    And when it runs out,
  • 25:39 - 25:49
how many in this place are going to find destruction?
  • 25:49 - 25:52
It's one thing if you lived your life the prostitute,
  • 25:52 - 25:54
you lived your life the heroin addict,
  • 25:54 - 25:56
you lived your life out there
  • 25:56 - 25:59
and you knew you just totally botched it.
  • 25:59 - 26:01
In the end, you expected to go to hell.
  • 26:01 - 26:04
You know that you lived bad.
  • 26:04 - 26:06
But can you imagine the shock
  • 26:06 - 26:09
    on judgment day?
  • 26:09 - 26:12
    Can you imagine the weeping?
  • 26:12 - 26:15
    The weeping.
  • 26:15 - 26:17
    To hear those words?
  • 26:17 - 26:23
    You're thinking,
  • 26:23 - 26:27
    "Lord, won't you receive me?
  • 26:27 - 26:29
    I did the church thing."
  • 26:29 - 26:34
And He says, "I never knew you."
  • 26:34 - 26:40
Why is the way to heaven so hard?
  • 26:40 - 26:42
Have you guys ever been told
  • 26:42 - 26:47
that the way to heaven is hard?
  • 26:47 - 26:50
    Why is it so hard?
  • 26:50 - 26:57
Basically, it's hard for this reason.
  • 26:57 - 27:00
    Look, guys.
  • 27:00 - 27:06
The whole world is willing to say a little prayer.
  • 27:06 - 27:09
What does a sinner's prayer sound like?
  • 27:09 - 27:10
How many of you have said
  • 27:10 - 27:13
    the sinner's prayer?
  • 27:13 - 27:16
What does the sinner's prayer sound like?
  • 27:16 - 27:21
    What do you pray?
  • 27:21 - 27:25
"Jesus, please come into my heart."
  • 27:25 - 27:27
You know one of the dangerous things
  • 27:27 - 27:30
    about that prayer?
  • 27:30 - 27:34
You don't find it anywhere in the Word of God.
  • 27:34 - 27:37
    Nowhere.
  • 27:37 - 27:39
    That's not how Jesus said
  • 27:39 - 27:43
    heaven is attained.
  • 27:43 - 27:45
But you know what we've got?
  • 27:45 - 27:47
We've got a world full of people
  • 27:47 - 27:51
that are happy and ready to say,
  • 27:51 - 27:53
    "Jesus, I'm a sinner.
  • 27:53 - 27:57
    Please come into my heart."
  • 27:57 - 28:00
And then you go enjoy all the idols,
  • 28:00 - 28:04
    all the sin,
  • 28:04 - 28:07
love the same garbage on t.v.
  • 28:07 - 28:09
    that the rest of the world loves;
  • 28:09 - 28:13
dress like them, look like them,
  • 28:13 - 28:15
pursue all the things that the world wants.
  • 28:15 - 28:17
Everybody wants to be able to
  • 28:17 - 28:19
say the little prayer as fire insurance
  • 28:19 - 28:21
    to get out of hell
  • 28:21 - 28:29
and then go live it up and have their sin.
  • 28:29 - 28:31
    Everybody loves to say
  • 28:31 - 28:34
    the little sinner's prayer
  • 28:34 - 28:35
    and then go sleep with
  • 28:35 - 28:37
    their girlfriend or their boyfriend.
  • 28:37 - 28:38
And think well, I've got this taken care of.
  • 28:38 - 28:40
I know this may not be exactly right,
  • 28:40 - 28:42
and I know God may not approve of this,
  • 28:42 - 28:45
    but I said the prayer.
  • 28:45 - 28:50
Listen, does that sound easy or hard?
  • 28:50 - 28:52
Does it sound easy or hard
  • 28:52 - 28:55
to go say a little prayer
  • 28:55 - 28:56
and then just live it up
  • 28:56 - 28:58
    and enjoy all your sin?
  • 28:58 - 29:00
    That sounds real easy.
  • 29:00 - 29:07
You know what, that sounds real similar
  • 29:07 - 29:10
to a broad way that's easy,
  • 29:10 - 29:15
    but the end is destruction.
  • 29:15 - 29:17
    Destruction.
  • 29:17 - 29:23
Versus, over here you've got life.
  • 29:23 - 29:24
    Life.
  • 29:24 - 29:26
    But the way is narrow.
  • 29:26 - 29:27
    You know what that means?
  • 29:27 - 29:34
That means that if you're going that way,
  • 29:34 - 29:36
most people are going to think
  • 29:36 - 29:37
    you're a fanatic.
  • 29:37 - 29:40
    I remember 20 years ago,
  • 29:40 - 29:42
    I came to the Lord.
  • 29:42 - 29:43
You know what, when I was
  • 29:43 - 29:45
    growing up in high school,
  • 29:45 - 29:50
most of my buddies were wild men.
  • 29:50 - 29:52
    We didn't think about church.
  • 29:52 - 29:54
    We didn't think about Christ.
  • 29:54 - 29:56
We didn't even know what John 3:16 was.
  • 29:56 - 29:57
We were watching football one time,
  • 29:57 - 30:01
and there was this John 3:16 in the end zone.
  • 30:01 - 30:03
    What is that?
  • 30:03 - 30:06
One of the guys said something,
  • 30:06 - 30:08
Oh I read that, it's from the Bible,
  • 30:08 - 30:09
    and what does it say?
  • 30:09 - 30:11
    He said something - I don't think
  • 30:11 - 30:13
it was anywhere close to being right.
  • 30:13 - 30:15
But we were all mystified by it.
  • 30:15 - 30:16
    We didn't know.
  • 30:16 - 30:20
We were just a bunch of wild pagan guys.
  • 30:20 - 30:24
But in my class, there were a couple guys
  • 30:24 - 30:26
    that were religious.
  • 30:26 - 30:27
    Two of them.
  • 30:27 - 30:29
In all my class, I think there were only
  • 30:29 - 30:30
    two religious guys.
  • 30:30 - 30:35
One was Catholic, one was protestant.
  • 30:35 - 30:37
    Well, you know what?
  • 30:37 - 30:40
    When God saved me,
  • 30:40 - 30:44
I joined a church softball league,
  • 30:44 - 30:46
and we were going to go out into the outfield
  • 30:46 - 30:47
and take batting practice out there
  • 30:47 - 30:50
because the other team had the infield.
  • 30:50 - 30:52
And on that team was this guy
  • 30:52 - 30:54
I went to high school with,
  • 30:54 - 30:56
and as I walked by him,
  • 30:56 - 30:59
he said, "I have heard you have
  • 30:59 - 31:03
    become a 'Jesus freak.'"
  • 31:03 - 31:05
And I turned around and I looked at him,
  • 31:05 - 31:06
and I thought of all people
  • 31:06 - 31:08
that I went to high school with
  • 31:08 - 31:11
that I would have least expected that from
  • 31:11 - 31:11
    it was this guy.
  • 31:11 - 31:15
Because I thought you were religious!
  • 31:15 - 31:17
    And I said to him,
  • 31:17 - 31:21
"Curt, how else can you be
  • 31:21 - 31:24
    when you find Christ?"
  • 31:24 - 31:27
And what I realized for the first time,
  • 31:27 - 31:31
    Curt was religious.
  • 31:31 - 31:34
But he was on the broad way.
  • 31:34 - 31:36
    He didn't know a thing.
  • 31:36 - 31:38
    You know what?
  • 31:38 - 31:39
    When you're in the minority,
  • 31:39 - 31:41
people think you're in a cult,
  • 31:41 - 31:43
    people think you're a radical,
  • 31:43 - 31:45
    they think you're a fanatic,
  • 31:45 - 31:47
they think you've lost your mind.
  • 31:47 - 31:51
Why? Because, if you're among the few,
  • 31:51 - 31:53
if only a very few find it,
  • 31:53 - 31:55
but the many are over here
  • 31:55 - 31:56
    guess what?
  • 31:56 - 31:58
    You don't look like them!
  • 31:58 - 32:00
    You're different from them.
  • 32:00 - 32:02
Because you went through a different gate,
  • 32:02 - 32:04
    you're on a different way,
  • 32:04 - 32:06
and you're headed to a different end.
  • 32:06 - 32:09
    And it isn't the same.
  • 32:09 - 32:11
    You're on a hard way.
  • 32:11 - 32:14
And that way is not like their way.
  • 32:14 - 32:16
So they're cruising through life easy,
  • 32:16 - 32:17
and they see you over here,
  • 32:17 - 32:19
    you're on this hard way.
  • 32:19 - 32:20
    You're struggling.
  • 32:20 - 32:22
    You're struggling to fight sin.
  • 32:22 - 32:23
    You're struggling with the
  • 32:23 - 32:25
    temptations of the world.
  • 32:25 - 32:26
    The onslaughts of the devil,
  • 32:26 - 32:28
    seeking to follow Christ.
  • 32:28 - 32:31
And He takes you through some hard places.
  • 32:31 - 32:32
    And there you are,
  • 32:32 - 32:33
    and they're just cruising along,
  • 32:33 - 32:35
and they look at you, and they think,
  • 32:35 - 32:38
    you are too rigid.
  • 32:38 - 32:42
    You're not right.
  • 32:42 - 32:44
I mean, just stop with that.
  • 32:44 - 32:48
My step-dad came in in total frustration,
  • 32:48 - 32:50
    when God saved me,
  • 32:50 - 32:54
he was trying to set me up to date
  • 32:54 - 32:59
some young lady from Michigan State.
  • 32:59 - 33:02
    And I wouldn't call her.
  • 33:02 - 33:03
    He gave her my number.
  • 33:03 - 33:05
She was leaving messages on the
  • 33:05 - 33:06
    answering machine
  • 33:06 - 33:08
    and I refused to call.
  • 33:08 - 33:11
And he came in to my bedroom
  • 33:11 - 33:13
    in total frustration,
  • 33:13 - 33:14
    and he said,
  • 33:14 - 33:19
"Religion is ok, but you've taken it too far."
  • 33:19 - 33:22
But see that is what the people
  • 33:22 - 33:24
    on the broad way think.
  • 33:24 - 33:27
    You Christians are radicals.
  • 33:27 - 33:28
    And I'll tell you this,
  • 33:28 - 33:31
you get on that narrow way,
  • 33:31 - 33:33
and the world's going to look at you that way.
  • 33:33 - 33:35
They're going to say you're too tight,
  • 33:35 - 33:37
you're too rigid, you're too narrow.
  • 33:37 - 33:42
    You're a freak.
  • 33:42 - 33:44
I don't know how many times
  • 33:44 - 33:47
people have called our church a cult.
  • 33:47 - 33:48
    Why?
  • 33:48 - 33:51
Because we're not like most churches.
  • 33:51 - 33:52
    Why?
  • 33:52 - 33:54
    Because most churches are saying
  • 33:54 - 33:56
    say the sinner's prayer
  • 33:56 - 34:00
and God's going to make you healthy and wealthy.
  • 34:00 - 34:01
And then they run around the pulpit
  • 34:01 - 34:04
    speaking in tongues.
  • 34:04 - 34:08
    Let me tell you,
  • 34:08 - 34:12
the Bible says through much tribulation
  • 34:12 - 34:15
we will inherit the Kingdom of Heaven.
  • 34:15 - 34:18
That's why that path is difficult.
  • 34:18 - 34:21
Listen, Jesus comes to you tonight,
  • 34:21 - 34:24
and He says, I offer you heaven.
  • 34:24 - 34:26
And I offer it to you freely.
  • 34:26 - 34:28
and though that way be hard,
  • 34:28 - 34:29
that doesn't mean that you have to
  • 34:29 - 34:31
come pay Me a whole bunch.
  • 34:31 - 34:34
He doesn't say that it's something
  • 34:34 - 34:36
that you have to purchase at great
  • 34:36 - 34:38
    expense to you.
  • 34:38 - 34:43
He purchased it at great expense to Him.
  • 34:43 - 34:48
But lest you be deceived here tonight,
  • 34:48 - 34:48
    He says,
  • 34:48 - 34:53
Come to Me and I will give you life freely.
  • 34:53 - 34:57
But His call is always this:
  • 34:57 - 34:59
    Follow Me.
  • 34:59 - 35:01
    That path is very narrow
  • 35:01 - 35:04
because Jesus is leading the way on it.
  • 35:04 - 35:06
And He takes us down a road
  • 35:06 - 35:09
that you and I would typically not choose
  • 35:09 - 35:11
if we had it in our power to choose.
  • 35:11 - 35:12
    But you know what?
  • 35:12 - 35:15
He takes us down that path
  • 35:15 - 35:19
    in love, compassion...
  • 35:19 - 35:22
And He takes us down a path
  • 35:22 - 35:26
where He comes in, and He will
  • 35:26 - 35:31
cut your idols away from you.
  • 35:31 - 35:37
And He will cut pride away from you.
  • 35:37 - 35:40
You know what's difficult about that path?
  • 35:40 - 35:45
It's a path of humility and humbling.
  • 35:45 - 35:48
The people on this - they can have their pride.
  • 35:48 - 35:50
    You know what pride is?
  • 35:50 - 35:52
    It's self-love.
  • 35:52 - 35:54
    You just love yourself.
  • 35:54 - 35:55
    You know why most people
  • 35:55 - 35:57
don't get on the narrow way?
  • 35:57 - 35:59
It really comes down to that.
  • 35:59 - 36:00
    Self-idolatry.
  • 36:00 - 36:02
You see, people on the broad way,
  • 36:02 - 36:04
    they can have their self,
  • 36:04 - 36:07
their selfish desires, their selfish ways.
  • 36:07 - 36:11
They can have it "my way."
  • 36:11 - 36:17
I can get to heaven and I can go my way.
  • 36:17 - 36:20
But all you have to do is look at the Scriptures.
  • 36:20 - 36:22
When Jesus came into this world,
  • 36:22 - 36:24
    everybody He called,
  • 36:24 - 36:26
He points to them and He says,
  • 36:26 - 36:30
    "Follow Me."
  • 36:30 - 36:35
    And if we follow Jesus,
  • 36:35 - 36:37
    as we're walking behind Him,
  • 36:37 - 36:39
    He says over His shoulder,
  • 36:39 - 36:43
    "Learn of Me."
  • 36:43 - 36:47
"I am meek and lowly in spirit."
  • 36:47 - 36:50
And He will break our pride.
  • 36:50 - 36:52
    He will break our self-trust.
  • 36:52 - 36:58
He will purge us and cleanse us of idols.
  • 36:58 - 37:00
    You know what He says?
  • 37:00 - 37:03
"Unless you forsake all that you have,
  • 37:03 - 37:05
    you cannot be My disciple."
  • 37:05 - 37:08
    That sound easy or hard?
  • 37:08 - 37:12
    Luke 14:33
  • 37:12 - 37:16
"Unless you forsake all that you have,
  • 37:16 - 37:18
    you cannot be My disciple."
  • 37:18 - 37:21
    That does sound hard.
  • 37:21 - 37:22
    Jesus says,
  • 37:22 - 37:27
I will save you, but I did not come to bargain.
  • 37:27 - 37:29
    I will be precious.
  • 37:29 - 37:31
    I will be all.
  • 37:31 - 37:34
I will be the object of your affections.
  • 37:34 - 37:36
I will be the object of your worship.
  • 37:36 - 37:38
I will be the object of your devotion.
  • 37:38 - 37:42
I will be Lord in your life.
  • 37:42 - 37:45
    I offer you salvation.
  • 37:45 - 37:47
But He offers it to you on His terms.
  • 37:47 - 37:49
You know what's easy about the broad way?
  • 37:49 - 37:51
    No terms! They're your terms.
  • 37:51 - 37:54
You pretty much set the terms.
  • 37:54 - 37:56
    People on the broad way,
  • 37:56 - 37:58
they pretty much say, hey, we're going to heaven,
  • 37:58 - 38:01
we said the prayer, and the terms are,
  • 38:01 - 38:03
Oh, God is just so loving,
  • 38:03 - 38:05
He couldn't possibly throw me into hell anyways.
  • 38:05 - 38:07
    My terms.
  • 38:07 - 38:08
    I can have whatever sin...
  • 38:08 - 38:09
    And you know what?
  • 38:09 - 38:11
    People on the broad way,
  • 38:11 - 38:14
you know how Jesus describes them in Matthew 7:23
  • 38:14 - 38:15
    and He says,
  • 38:15 - 38:17
    "Depart from Me..."
  • 38:17 - 38:21
you workers of iniquity or you workers of lawlesness.
  • 38:21 - 38:23
You know what people on the broad way do?
  • 38:23 - 38:26
They commit all this lawlessness, all this iniquity,
  • 38:26 - 38:28
they do all the things God hates.
  • 38:28 - 38:30
But they imagine God in heaven
  • 38:30 - 38:32
    just smiling at them.
  • 38:32 - 38:33
    It's real easy.
  • 38:33 - 38:35
    They just recreate God.
  • 38:35 - 38:36
    Oh, God understands...
  • 38:36 - 38:38
yeah, I'm sleeping with my girlfriend
  • 38:38 - 38:41
but God understands - we love each other.
  • 38:41 - 38:43
I know I went to that movie,
  • 38:43 - 38:47
that R-rated filth that He probably doesn't approve of,
  • 38:47 - 38:49
but come on, I mean He obviously
  • 38:49 - 38:51
understands that we need to laugh sometimes.
  • 38:51 - 38:54
So, it's easy. You just explain all your sin away.
  • 38:54 - 38:57
You know, yeah, it's probably not the best thing,
  • 38:57 - 39:02
but God is just pleased with me, He smiles on it.
  • 39:02 - 39:08
In the end, you find out.
  • 39:08 - 39:12
In the end, you come expecting heaven.
  • 39:12 - 39:14
Can you imagine what it will be
  • 39:14 - 39:20
to hear Jesus say to you, "Depart."
  • 39:20 - 39:23
    That'll be it.
  • 39:23 - 39:27
    There will be no plea.
  • 39:27 - 39:30
    There is no higher court.
  • 39:30 - 39:32
    You cannot appeal.
  • 39:32 - 39:35
    He is the authority.
  • 39:35 - 39:39
    He is the Judge.
  • 39:39 - 39:43
When you stand before the judgment seat of Christ,
  • 39:43 - 39:50
His verdict is full and final and complete.
  • 39:50 - 39:52
    Permanent.
  • 39:52 - 39:54
    And when He says, "Depart."
  • 39:54 - 40:01
    You will depart.
  • 40:01 - 40:04
    Listen.
  • 40:04 - 40:14
Jesus Christ came into this world
  • 40:14 - 40:18
to offer a way to life.
  • 40:18 - 40:21
You see, I'm not up here tonight
  • 40:21 - 40:23
    telling you there's no way.
  • 40:23 - 40:28
I'm just telling you the way is narrow.
  • 40:28 - 40:29
    That is a glorious reality.
  • 40:29 - 40:32
That is one that ought to make you shout for joy.
  • 40:32 - 40:33
    There is a way!
  • 40:33 - 40:36
    You're not like the demons.
  • 40:36 - 40:38
    God has provided a way.
  • 40:38 - 40:39
    You know what?
  • 40:39 - 40:43
Listen, if you want to go to heaven,
  • 40:43 - 40:45
does it matter that the way is narrow or broad
  • 40:45 - 40:47
    that gets there?
  • 40:47 - 40:49
The fact is, if there's a way there,
  • 40:49 - 40:50
    there's a way there.
  • 40:50 - 40:53
And what I find in the Scriptures is
  • 40:53 - 40:55
it's broad enough for you to fit on.
  • 40:55 - 40:57
    No, not with your sin,
  • 40:57 - 40:59
    your baggage, garbage, idolatry...
  • 40:59 - 41:02
you've got to repent to get on that way,
  • 41:02 - 41:04
and you've got to follow Christ that way.
  • 41:04 - 41:06
And He's going to take you through hard ground.
  • 41:06 - 41:07
    But so be it!
  • 41:07 - 41:08
    There's a way!
  • 41:08 - 41:11
And in the end, there's life!
  • 41:11 - 41:13
And let me tell you about life.
  • 41:13 - 41:16
Destruction may sound read bad and it is.
  • 41:16 - 41:17
In fact, it's so bad, Jesus says
  • 41:17 - 41:19
if you've got to cut off hands,
  • 41:19 - 41:21
gouge out eyes, cut off feet
  • 41:21 - 41:22
    not to go there.
  • 41:22 - 41:24
    And He's talking about idols,
  • 41:24 - 41:25
    He's talking about sin.
  • 41:25 - 41:27
If you've got to do radical amputation
  • 41:27 - 41:30
to get to heaven, He says you better do it.
  • 41:30 - 41:33
He says it is better to radically amputate
  • 41:33 - 41:35
those things in your life that you want to
  • 41:35 - 41:40
hold on to, cut them off and get to heaven.
  • 41:40 - 41:43
Rather than to keep them and perish in hell.
  • 41:43 - 41:45
Jesus said it is a fearful place.
  • 41:45 - 41:47
It is a place you don't want to go.
  • 41:47 - 41:53
It is a place, listen, if you go there, you go there.
  • 41:53 - 41:55
And it's done and it's final.
  • 41:55 - 41:57
But He comes and He says,
  • 41:57 - 42:00
at the end of this is life.
  • 42:00 - 42:02
And He says that He promises to give
  • 42:02 - 42:04
    men life more abundantly.
  • 42:04 - 42:06
In fact, there's several places in the New Testament
  • 42:06 - 42:08
    where He calls it paradise.
  • 42:08 - 42:10
And we see this picture in Matthew 13
  • 42:10 - 42:12
    of those that go there
  • 42:12 - 42:15
shining like the sun in the kingdom
  • 42:15 - 42:17
    of their Father.
  • 42:17 - 42:22
We find that there are pleasures
  • 42:22 - 42:25
    forevermore at His right hand.
  • 42:25 - 42:30
We find there that Christ Himself
  • 42:30 - 42:33
in all of His glory is the object of
  • 42:33 - 42:36
the love and the affection of those
  • 42:36 - 42:37
    that are there.
  • 42:37 - 42:42
Listen, I have to think that one of the reasons
  • 42:42 - 42:55
that there is such weeping in hell,
  • 42:55 - 42:59
it's not only for the hell they get,
  • 42:59 - 43:06
but it's for what they could have had.
  • 43:06 - 43:11
    I imagine that Jesus Christ
  • 43:11 - 43:15
will be the most fearful object imaginable
  • 43:15 - 43:20
to those who are being cast away.
  • 43:20 - 43:22
    Think with me.
  • 43:22 - 43:23
Can you imagine if it's you
  • 43:23 - 43:26
that comes there on that day?
  • 43:26 - 43:29
    And Jesus says, "Depart."
  • 43:29 - 43:31
But you see there were other people,
  • 43:31 - 43:35
other people just like you with the same sins.
  • 43:35 - 43:40
And Jesus is smiling at them.
  • 43:40 - 43:46
And even as fearful and terrible as He is to you,
  • 43:46 - 43:48
    you'll recognize immediately
  • 43:48 - 43:50
    there is such glory,
  • 43:50 - 43:54
    there is such beauty,
  • 43:54 - 44:01
you'll realize these people found the riches of all riches.
  • 44:01 - 44:05
They found that which is bringing them
  • 44:05 - 44:09
a joy; they have glory that is everlasting.
  • 44:09 - 44:11
    An eternal weight of glory.
  • 44:11 - 44:14
You will see what you could have had.
  • 44:14 - 44:17
    It was offered to you.
  • 44:17 - 44:20
    And the thing is,
  • 44:20 - 44:22
    if you're told to depart,
  • 44:22 - 44:24
you'll not be able to say,
  • 44:24 - 44:27
mom, dad, it was your fault.
  • 44:27 - 44:30
My friend that sat next to me,
  • 44:30 - 44:34
distracted me, we walked out that night
  • 44:34 - 44:37
    and immediately...
  • 44:37 - 44:39
    you know what?
  • 44:39 - 44:44
    Every sinner that rejects Christ
  • 44:44 - 44:50
and finds destruction in the end...
  • 44:50 - 44:52
one of the reasons to weep is
  • 44:52 - 44:56
because you will know it was all your fault.
  • 44:56 - 45:01
You'll only have yourself to blame.
  • 45:01 - 45:03
    What misery.
  • 45:03 - 45:11
You were the cause of your own spiritual suicide.
  • 45:11 - 45:15
    You did it to yourself.
  • 45:15 - 45:22
When life was offered to you,
  • 45:22 - 45:29
you willingly and freely chose to reject it.
  • 45:29 - 45:34
    What weeping, what bitter sorrow.
  • 45:34 - 45:39
Jesus Christ went to that cross
  • 45:39 - 45:42
and He suffered the very wrath.
  • 45:42 - 45:45
    He suffered that destruction
  • 45:45 - 45:47
    to open a way.
  • 45:47 - 45:48
    Yes, it's narrow.
  • 45:48 - 45:51
    But like I said before,
  • 45:51 - 45:54
    so what?
  • 45:54 - 46:02
If it will get you to heaven, who cares?
  • 46:02 - 46:05
He suffered the wrath of God,
  • 46:05 - 46:08
    that you might have life
  • 46:08 - 46:11
    and have it more abundantly.
  • 46:11 - 46:14
Today is the day of salvation.
  • 46:14 - 46:15
    Don't put it off.
  • 46:15 - 46:19
You don't know if you have tomorrow.
  • 46:19 - 46:21
    And I have seen it.
  • 46:21 - 46:24
God is in the business of,
  • 46:24 - 46:28
oftentimes, letting people hear the truth,
  • 46:28 - 46:30
    hear the message of life,
  • 46:30 - 46:34
right before He cuts them off.
  • 46:34 - 46:35
    Lots of people...
  • 46:35 - 46:41
That step-dad I told you about...
  • 46:41 - 46:43
God brought him and sat him
  • 46:43 - 46:46
    under the Gospel,
  • 46:46 - 46:50
    he had a heart attack.
  • 46:50 - 46:52
    Then he had a stroke.
  • 46:52 - 46:53
    Then he had cancer.
  • 46:53 - 46:55
    Then he was dead.
  • 46:55 - 47:01
And he rejected all the way to the end.
  • 47:01 - 47:04
I have preached a number of times
  • 47:04 - 47:07
    to people -
  • 47:07 - 47:15
within two weeks, a month, they were dead.
  • 47:15 - 47:18
The Lord is very merciful to let you hear
  • 47:18 - 47:21
a word of truth and a message of life.
  • 47:21 - 47:25
Jesus Christ says to you right now,
  • 47:25 - 47:32
    "Follow Me."
  • 47:32 - 47:34
You say how do I do that?
  • 47:34 - 47:36
    I can't see Him.
  • 47:36 - 47:37
    You call unto Him.
  • 47:37 - 47:38
    You cry out to Him.
  • 47:38 - 47:40
You say that sounds like a sinner's prayer.
  • 47:40 - 47:41
    No, I'm not talking about
  • 47:41 - 47:43
any little formula that you do.
  • 47:43 - 47:46
I'm talking about if you're sitting there today
  • 47:46 - 47:49
and you realize that you're not a good person.
  • 47:49 - 47:51
He came to seek and save.
  • 47:51 - 47:57
You know why this narrow way is hard?
  • 47:57 - 48:00
Because people that go in there
  • 48:00 - 48:03
    realize they deserve hell,
  • 48:03 - 48:05
    they realize they're bad people,
  • 48:05 - 48:07
and they realize they've got a ton of sin
  • 48:07 - 48:09
    that reaches up to heaven
  • 48:09 - 48:11
    and screams against them.
  • 48:11 - 48:12
And they go in that way
  • 48:12 - 48:14
no matter how hard it is
  • 48:14 - 48:16
because that is the way where Christ is
  • 48:16 - 48:18
    and they need Him
  • 48:18 - 48:20
and they see in Him a suitable Savior.
  • 48:20 - 48:22
You know why that way is so easy?
  • 48:22 - 48:24
Because the people that are on it,
  • 48:24 - 48:25
    if you ask them,
  • 48:25 - 48:26
    are you good people?
  • 48:26 - 48:28
Yeah, we're all just a bunch of good old boys.
  • 48:28 - 48:31
    We're good people.
  • 48:31 - 48:33
Of course, Christ is going to accept us
  • 48:33 - 48:34
    in the end.
  • 48:34 - 48:35
    They're good people.
  • 48:35 - 48:36
But let me tell you this,
  • 48:36 - 48:38
the Spirit of God came into this world
  • 48:38 - 48:43
to convince and convict men of sin.
  • 48:43 - 48:47
And convince you that your righteousness is rags.
  • 48:47 - 48:50
It is filthy in God's sight.
  • 48:50 - 48:51
You have nothing to offer Him,
  • 48:51 - 48:53
no matter how good you've been,
  • 48:53 - 48:58
it's been so plagued and so corrupted by sin
  • 48:58 - 49:02
that God cannot look at it, cannot stand it,
  • 49:02 - 49:05
    God cannot accept it.
  • 49:05 - 49:06
    And you deserve hell.
  • 49:06 - 49:08
    You deserve it.
  • 49:08 - 49:09
    Listen.
  • 49:09 - 49:11
One thing nobody's going to argue
  • 49:11 - 49:13
that goes and ends up in destruction in the end.
  • 49:13 - 49:15
    Nobody is going to argue
  • 49:15 - 49:17
the fact that they deserve to be there.
  • 49:17 - 49:19
But I'll tell you before they get there,
  • 49:19 - 49:20
    before judgment day,
  • 49:20 - 49:22
    that way is so easy
  • 49:22 - 49:27
because people think, "I don't deserve hell."
  • 49:27 - 49:29
    "I'm a pretty good person."
  • 49:29 - 49:33
Think with me about the answer.
  • 49:33 - 49:34
    We asked this girl,
  • 49:34 - 49:36
    "are you going to heaven?"
  • 49:36 - 49:41
"Well, I sing for the church choir."
  • 49:41 - 49:45
That's not what we asked you.
  • 49:45 - 49:49
But you see, people on that road...
  • 49:49 - 49:52
Of course, if I sing in the church choir,
  • 49:52 - 49:56
    I'm a good person.
  • 49:56 - 49:58
    It's just easy.
  • 49:58 - 50:01
It's just like a flowing river.
  • 50:01 - 50:04
    You just flop in there
  • 50:04 - 50:07
and you go with the flow.
  • 50:07 - 50:09
    This way's hard
  • 50:09 - 50:12
because you're going against the stream all the time.
  • 50:12 - 50:13
    You're going up river.
  • 50:13 - 50:15
    You're going against the world,
  • 50:15 - 50:17
you're going against everybody around you,
  • 50:17 - 50:18
    people in your family,
  • 50:18 - 50:21
    people that were your friends...
  • 50:21 - 50:23
they suddenly don't want to be your friends anymore.
  • 50:23 - 50:24
    Why?
  • 50:24 - 50:26
Because you love what they hate,
  • 50:26 - 50:28
    you hate what they love.
  • 50:28 - 50:30
And they don't want to run with you anymore.
  • 50:30 - 50:32
    That's what happened to me.
  • 50:32 - 50:33
You ask most of these guys out here
  • 50:33 - 50:34
    that have been converted.
  • 50:34 - 50:36
    That happened to them.
  • 50:36 - 50:38
You don't run with the same crowd anymore.
  • 50:38 - 50:44
But if you're sitting here today
  • 50:44 - 50:49
    and you have a sense,
  • 50:49 - 50:51
what this guy's saying is right.
  • 50:51 - 50:52
    I do deserve hell.
  • 50:52 - 50:55
    I know it.
  • 50:55 - 50:57
I've done enough things in my life
  • 50:57 - 51:03
to warrant hell a hundred times over.
  • 51:03 - 51:07
You realize that unless you find a Savior,
  • 51:07 - 51:10
    that's exactly where you're headed.
  • 51:10 - 51:11
You see, there is a picture
  • 51:11 - 51:14
in the Scriptures of a man,
  • 51:14 - 51:16
he wouldn't even look to heaven.
  • 51:16 - 51:19
And he beat on his breast.
  • 51:19 - 51:25
He said, "God, be merciful to me, a sinner."
  • 51:25 - 51:28
Jesus said that man went home justified.
  • 51:28 - 51:30
    You know what that means?
  • 51:30 - 51:31
It means that he went home
  • 51:31 - 51:33
    declared righteous.
  • 51:33 - 51:35
    He went home saved.
  • 51:35 - 51:41
He went home on the narrow way.
  • 51:41 - 51:43
But you get in there not by saying
  • 51:43 - 51:45
    I'm a pretty good person,
  • 51:45 - 51:48
I say my little sinner's prayer.
  • 51:48 - 51:49
    Nope.
  • 51:49 - 51:53
If that's all that's happened to you, you're on this way.
  • 51:53 - 51:54
And I'll tell you, get off.
  • 51:54 - 51:56
Because you're in the flow, you're in the current,
  • 51:56 - 51:57
you're going to perish in the end.
  • 51:57 - 51:59
You say, well, I've never heard that before.
  • 51:59 - 52:01
It doesn't matter if you've heard that before.
  • 52:01 - 52:03
This is what the Scripture says.
  • 52:03 - 52:04
You need to search it for yourself.
  • 52:04 - 52:06
You need to read Luke 13.
  • 52:06 - 52:07
    Read Luke 14.
  • 52:07 - 52:09
    Read Matthew 7.
  • 52:09 - 52:12
This is what Christ is saying in the Word of God.
  • 52:12 - 52:14
    Read Luke 19.
  • 52:14 - 52:17
    This is what He's saying.
  • 52:17 - 52:19
The Bible says you're going to have
  • 52:19 - 52:20
all sorts of people that are going to
  • 52:20 - 52:22
    come and tickle your ears.
  • 52:22 - 52:24
The world is full of ear ticklers
  • 52:24 - 52:28
that are going to tell you the way to heaven is easy.
  • 52:28 - 52:29
But if they tell you that,
  • 52:29 - 52:31
    then be certain,
  • 52:31 - 52:32
    what they're really doing is
  • 52:32 - 52:35
they're trying to put you on the broad way.
  • 52:35 - 52:38
    They're just lying to you.
  • 52:38 - 52:41
    They're deceiving you.
  • 52:41 - 52:43
    And they're destroying you.
  • 52:43 - 52:49
And it sounds good; it sounds easy.
  • 52:49 - 52:54
But in the end, there will be hell to pay.
  • 52:54 - 52:58
    I bid you, come.
  • 52:58 - 52:59
    Come with me.
  • 52:59 - 53:05
Twenty years ago, Jesus bid me come.
  • 53:05 - 53:07
    And I knew it.
  • 53:07 - 53:10
I was going to be destroyed.
  • 53:10 - 53:12
I deserved hell. I knew it.
  • 53:12 - 53:17
My sin was so wicked and so vile.
  • 53:17 - 53:19
    I knew I wasn't good.
  • 53:19 - 53:22
    And I heard His voice.
  • 53:22 - 53:23
    It said, "Come."
  • 53:23 - 53:26
    And I'll tell you this,
  • 53:26 - 53:29
    has it proved hard?
  • 53:29 - 53:30
    Yep. Harder than I ever
  • 53:30 - 53:33
could have imagined in the beginning.
  • 53:33 - 53:35
    But I'll tell you this,
  • 53:35 - 53:37
    though there's few on it,
  • 53:37 - 53:38
    there are few on it.
  • 53:38 - 53:40
And so I've found others that are on it!
  • 53:40 - 53:41
    And they're like me.
  • 53:41 - 53:44
And you say, well, what, the few of you
  • 53:44 - 53:45
    you get to go along
  • 53:45 - 53:47
all miserable together on that hard road.
  • 53:47 - 53:49
No, that's not how it is.
  • 53:49 - 53:51
    As hard as it is,
  • 53:51 - 53:55
    Jesus said, "Follow Me."
  • 53:55 - 53:57
You see, we're following in His footsteps.
  • 53:57 - 53:58
This is the path He took.
  • 53:58 - 54:00
And He promised to be with us.
  • 54:00 - 54:02
    And He gives us joy.
  • 54:02 - 54:03
And though life here is hard,
  • 54:03 - 54:08
it's full of joy, it's full of hope,
  • 54:08 - 54:15
it's full of many glorious realities.
  • 54:15 - 54:18
    And in the end,
  • 54:18 - 54:21
    we get Christ.
  • 54:21 - 54:22
And we get to be like Him,
  • 54:22 - 54:24
    and we get paradise,
  • 54:24 - 54:25
    and we get joy,
  • 54:25 - 54:26
    and we get to shine
  • 54:26 - 54:29
    like the sun at noontime,
  • 54:29 - 54:32
in the Kingdom of our Father.
  • 54:32 - 54:36
We get such glories called in the Bible
  • 54:36 - 54:38
    an eternal weight of glory.
  • 54:38 - 54:42
We get the riches of Christ.
  • 54:42 - 54:45
We are heirs to the most glorious
  • 54:45 - 54:47
    fortune ever.
  • 54:47 - 54:50
And I'm not talking in a worldly sense.
  • 54:50 - 54:53
And I'm not the one calling this place paradise.
  • 54:53 - 54:55
    Jesus called it that.
  • 54:55 - 54:58
And if anybody knows the right assessment of things,
  • 54:58 - 54:59
    like I said before,
  • 54:59 - 55:01
if anybody can answer the questions,
  • 55:01 - 55:05
    He can.
  • 55:05 - 55:07
    Listen.
  • 55:07 - 55:12
If you find that this resonates with you.
  • 55:12 - 55:14
You're saying yes, this is what I need.
  • 55:14 - 55:17
Don't go out of this place tonight
  • 55:17 - 55:19
    and go shake it off
  • 55:19 - 55:21
and go be foolish with your friends.
  • 55:21 - 55:23
I mean get serious with the Lord.
  • 55:23 - 55:25
    Do business with the Lord.
  • 55:25 - 55:27
    You go find someplace,
  • 55:27 - 55:28
and you cry out to Him.
  • 55:28 - 55:30
Do it right where you sit right now.
  • 55:30 - 55:32
Plead with Him, "God save me!
  • 55:32 - 55:34
I see myself to be like that.
  • 55:34 - 55:36
I don't care how hard the way is.
  • 55:36 - 55:38
    I need to be saved."
  • 55:38 - 55:39
    And I'll tell you,
  • 55:39 - 55:41
    as hard as it is,
  • 55:41 - 55:44
    Jesus is tender.
  • 55:44 - 55:46
    And He's compassionate.
  • 55:46 - 55:49
And it's only hard because as He
  • 55:49 - 55:52
strips us of our sin, it hurts.
  • 55:52 - 55:56
And as He smashes our pride, it's painful.
  • 55:56 - 56:01
    And as He molds us,
  • 56:01 - 56:04
and causes us to take on more and more
  • 56:04 - 56:07
of the image of His glory,
  • 56:07 - 56:10
    He has to shatter us,
  • 56:10 - 56:11
    and break us,
  • 56:11 - 56:13
    and crush us,
  • 56:13 - 56:15
    and it hurts.
  • 56:15 - 56:17
    It hurts.
  • 56:17 - 56:18
    But it's good.
  • 56:18 - 56:21
He wounds us that He might heal us.
  • 56:21 - 56:23
    But it's good.
  • 56:23 - 56:24
Because what He really wants to do
  • 56:24 - 56:28
    is work righteousness in us.
  • 56:28 - 56:33
He wants to present us blameless
  • 56:33 - 56:36
and spotless as a bride for Himself
  • 56:36 - 56:39
    in that day.
  • 56:39 - 56:44
At the end of that narrow way is glory.
  • 56:44 - 56:46
    And you know what?
  • 56:46 - 56:51
The hard way - it's only for a little while.
  • 56:51 - 56:54
And then the glory beyond it is forever.
  • 56:54 - 56:57
The easy way - that, too, is only for a little while.
  • 56:57 - 57:01
It's only easy for a little while.
  • 57:01 - 57:05
In the end, it gets real hard.
  • 57:05 - 57:10
    Destruction.
  • 57:10 - 57:18
And I'll just leave you with this thought:
  • 57:18 - 57:26
The Bible says that God is not partial.
  • 57:26 - 57:32
That's an important word to leave you with.
  • 57:32 - 57:33
    You know why?
  • 57:33 - 57:39
    Because you are partial.
  • 57:39 - 57:43
    Let me explain.
  • 57:43 - 57:45
You think much more highly of yourself
  • 57:45 - 57:49
    typically than you ought.
  • 57:49 - 57:51
Most of us can easily find fault
  • 57:51 - 57:53
    with others,
  • 57:53 - 57:55
but when the same fault's in ourselves,
  • 57:55 - 57:58
we don't see it near as well, right?
  • 57:58 - 58:00
    You know why that is?
  • 58:00 - 58:02
    We're partial.
  • 58:02 - 58:07
    We're partial to ourselves.
  • 58:07 - 58:08
    Let me tell you something,
  • 58:08 - 58:11
    God is not partial.
  • 58:11 - 58:15
You would never throw you into hell.
  • 58:15 - 58:18
And by the way, that word "throw."
  • 58:18 - 58:21
    It's in the Bible.
  • 58:21 - 58:27
    God throws people into hell.
  • 58:27 - 58:30
You say, I would never throw me into hell.
  • 58:30 - 58:34
    That's because you're partial.
  • 58:34 - 58:38
If you find yourself on judgment day
  • 58:38 - 58:41
    outside of Christ,
  • 58:41 - 58:44
no matter how much you love you,
  • 58:44 - 58:47
God will throw you into that lake of fire.
  • 58:47 - 58:54
    He is not partial.
  • 58:54 - 58:59
But you don't need to be there on that day
  • 58:59 - 59:03
    without Christ.
  • 59:03 - 59:07
He bids you this very day,
  • 59:07 - 59:09
    Come unto Me,
  • 59:09 - 59:12
you that labor and are heavy laden
  • 59:12 - 59:15
    under your sin.
  • 59:15 - 59:17
    Come unto Me.
  • 59:17 - 59:20
And I will give you rest.
  • 59:20 - 59:21
Is the way hard that leads to life?
  • 59:21 - 59:23
    Yes.
  • 59:23 - 59:26
    But it's a restful way.
  • 59:26 - 59:32
Those two may seem at odds with each other,
  • 59:32 - 59:33
    but they're not.
  • 59:33 - 59:37
You can be in a hard place
  • 59:37 - 59:40
    and be at rest.
  • 59:40 - 59:43
    You know why?
  • 59:43 - 59:45
Because you can be fighting with sin,
  • 59:45 - 59:49
    and fighting with the devil,
  • 59:49 - 59:54
and still feel the guilt of all my sin
  • 59:54 - 59:59
lifted off and laid on Christ.
  • 59:59 - 60:01
    You can still battle
  • 60:01 - 60:05
and feel the freedom of my sin,
  • 60:05 - 60:09
not in part but the whole
  • 60:09 - 60:11
    is nailed to that cross
  • 60:11 - 60:13
and I bear it no more.
  • 60:13 - 60:16
    Praise the Lord,
  • 60:16 - 60:22
    Praise the Lord.
  • 60:22 - 60:23
    May God help you.
