Is birth control Biblical? - Tim Conway

  • 0:11 - 0:12
    Ok, No. 4, Allen
  • 0:12 - 0:14
    "Is birth control Biblical?
  • 0:14 - 0:17
    I mean, if we should
    trust God in all things,
  • 0:17 - 0:19
isn't it kind of wrong to say,
  • 0:19 - 0:21
'Hey, God, I don't want you to bless us
  • 0:21 - 0:23
    with a kid, so we're
    going to use birth control.'
  • 0:23 - 0:27
    I'm very confused about
which way to go with this.
  • 0:27 - 0:31
    My wife and I."
  • 0:31 - 0:36
You guys want my take on it?
  • 0:36 - 0:41
    Here it is.
  • 0:41 - 0:45
    This is an important
    hermeneutical principal.
  • 0:45 - 0:48
    If you're not familiar
    with what hermeneutics is,
  • 0:48 - 0:51
    basically it's the study
    of Biblical interpretation.
  • 0:51 - 0:54
You want to know about proper
  • 0:54 - 0:55
    Biblical interpretation?
  • 0:55 - 0:56
    And this is my take.
  • 0:56 - 0:58
Especially as a pastor at the church.
  • 0:58 - 1:00
    When the Bible is dogmatic
  • 1:00 - 1:02
about something and gives clear examples
  • 1:02 - 1:03
    and clear commandments
  • 1:03 - 1:04
    and clear principles,
  • 1:04 - 1:06
    I am going to be clear;
  • 1:06 - 1:07
as clear as I can be,
  • 1:07 - 1:09
    as clear as God
    gives me grace to be.
  • 1:09 - 1:11
    And when it's dogmatic,
    I'm going to be dogmatic.
  • 1:11 - 1:13
When things seem to be obscure,
  • 1:13 - 1:15
when things are not so clearly dealt with,
  • 1:15 - 1:17
then I am not going to be as dogmatic.
  • 1:17 - 1:19
I am going to back away.
  • 1:19 - 1:21
    I may give some opinions;
  • 1:21 - 1:23
I will point out some principles
  • 1:23 - 1:25
    to be considered
  • 1:25 - 1:27
where God's Word gives plain commandments,
  • 1:27 - 1:29
I am going to insist upon it.
  • 1:29 - 1:31
    But where it is vague,
  • 1:31 - 1:34
I am not going to be overly dogmatic.
  • 1:34 - 1:37
    And so, folks,
  • 1:37 - 1:42
is there a Bible verse in all the Bible
  • 1:42 - 1:46
that speaks clearly about birth control.
  • 1:46 - 1:47
    There is not.
  • 1:47 - 1:49
    Now, some people will
    argue and say there is.
  • 1:49 - 1:54
Let me tell you the verse that
    they typically argue from.
  • 1:54 - 1:58
"Judah took a wife for Er, his firstborn,
  • 1:58 - 2:00
    and her name was Tamar.
  • 2:00 - 2:02
But Er, Judah's firstborn, was wicked
  • 2:02 - 2:03
in the sight of the Lord,
  • 2:03 - 2:06
and the Lord put Him to death.
  • 2:06 - 2:09
    Then Judah said to Onan,
  • 2:09 - 2:11
    (Onan was Er's brother)
  • 2:11 - 2:13
    Go into your brother's wife
  • 2:13 - 2:17
    and perform the duty
    of a brother-in-law to her
  • 2:17 - 2:20
and raise up offspring for your brother.
  • 2:20 - 2:22
But Onan knew that the offspring
  • 2:22 - 2:24
    would not be his,
  • 2:24 - 2:27
    so whenever he went
    in to his brother's wife,
  • 2:27 - 2:30
he would waste the semen on the ground,
  • 2:30 - 2:32
    so as not to give
    offspring to his brother.
  • 2:32 - 2:35
    And what he did was
wicked in the sight of the Lord
  • 2:35 - 2:38
and the Lord put him to death."
  • 2:38 - 2:40
So people look at that and they say,
  • 2:40 - 2:42
    See?
  • 2:42 - 2:43
That's a form of birth control
  • 2:43 - 2:46
and God put him to death.
  • 2:46 - 2:48
    But look,
  • 2:48 - 2:55
    God doesn't say that the
sin of Onan was birth control.
  • 2:55 - 2:58
There was a law in Israel.
  • 2:58 - 2:59
Listen to what the law said:
  • 2:59 - 3:01
    Deuteronomy 25:5
  • 3:01 - 3:02
    "If brothers dwell together
  • 3:02 - 3:03
    and one of them dies
  • 3:03 - 3:05
    and has no son,
  • 3:05 - 3:06
the wife of the dead man
  • 3:06 - 3:08
shall not be married outside the family
  • 3:08 - 3:09
    to a stranger.
  • 3:09 - 3:12
Her husband's brother shall go in to her
  • 3:12 - 3:13
and take her as his wife
  • 3:13 - 3:16
    and perform the duty
    of a husband's brother
  • 3:16 - 3:18
to her, and the first son whom she bears
  • 3:18 - 3:21
    will succeed to the
    name of his dead brother
  • 3:21 - 3:25
    that his name may
not be blotted out of Israel."
  • 3:25 - 3:28
    Folks, as far as birth
    control is concerned,
  • 3:28 - 3:31
the Bible nowhere seems to forbid it,
  • 3:31 - 3:33
neither does it endorse it, by the way.
  • 3:33 - 3:36
But that text right there is not saying
  • 3:36 - 3:38
    that Onan committed birth control
  • 3:38 - 3:40
    and God killed him.
  • 3:40 - 3:42
The problem was that Onan knew
  • 3:42 - 3:46
    that the firstborn child
    would not be his own.
  • 3:46 - 3:48
    It would be his brothers.
  • 3:48 - 3:50
That's why he didn't want to do it.
  • 3:50 - 3:52
God killed him because he wickedly refused
  • 3:52 - 3:57
to do what was a law in Israel to be done.
  • 3:57 - 4:01
    What a brother should
    have done to another brother.
  • 4:01 - 4:05
But here, I want to tell you
    what the Bible does say.
  • 4:05 - 4:09
    The Bible says that you
    are not to commit murder.
  • 4:09 - 4:10
    Listen to me.
  • 4:10 - 4:12
If any member of our church
  • 4:12 - 4:14
uses a form of birth control
  • 4:14 - 4:17
    that is abortive in nature
  • 4:17 - 4:18
and I were to find that out,
  • 4:18 - 4:21
    and they were not to
    repent of that immediately,
  • 4:21 - 4:24
    they would be disciplined
    out of the church promptly.
  • 4:24 - 4:26
    If you are using any
    sort of birth control,
  • 4:26 - 4:28
whether it's the pill or anything else,
  • 4:28 - 4:31
and I suggest you do the research.
  • 4:31 - 4:33
If you're going to use birth control,
  • 4:33 - 4:35
    you have the obligation
    to live righteously
  • 4:35 - 4:37
    before the Lord.
  • 4:37 - 4:39
And if you're using any type that possibly
  • 4:39 - 4:41
    is abortive in nature,
  • 4:41 - 4:42
    and what I mean is,
  • 4:42 - 4:44
    there's a fertilized egg
that is being put to death,
  • 4:44 - 4:47
    you are committing murder.
  • 4:47 - 4:50
    And be certain of it.
  • 4:50 - 4:53
    That is forbidden.
  • 4:53 - 4:55
And I can be dogmatic about that.
  • 4:55 - 4:58
You are not to use abortive techniques
  • 4:58 - 5:00
    in birth control.
  • 5:00 - 5:06
That is totally ruled out of Scripture.
  • 5:06 - 5:10
What else can I tell you dogmatically?
  • 5:10 - 5:12
    I can tell you this.
  • 5:12 - 5:14
Children are a heritage from the Lord.
  • 5:14 - 5:16
The fruit of the womb is a reward.
  • 5:16 - 5:17
Like arrows in the hand of a warrior
  • 5:17 - 5:19
are the children of one's youth.
  • 5:19 - 5:22
    Blessed is the man who
    fills his quiver with them.
  • 5:22 - 5:24
He shall not be put to shame
  • 5:24 - 5:26
    when he speaks with
    his enemies in the gate.
  • 5:26 - 5:28
    I'll tell you this,
  • 5:28 - 5:30
having lots of children is a blessing.
  • 5:30 - 5:35
And I can tell you that dogmatically.
  • 5:35 - 5:38
You know what else I can tell you?
  • 5:38 - 5:42
God opens the womb and closes the womb.
  • 5:42 - 5:44
And the Bible tells us that.
  • 5:44 - 5:46
    And you that think,
  • 5:46 - 5:49
you're just going to control this thing,
  • 5:49 - 5:51
and you're going to go on birth control
  • 5:51 - 5:52
    at this time,
  • 5:52 - 5:54
    and then you're going
    to get off of it,
  • 5:54 - 5:55
    and then you're going
    to have your family.
  • 5:55 - 5:57
    Let me tell you.
  • 5:57 - 5:58
    God opens the womb.
  • 5:58 - 6:03
    And just because you're
    trying to structure that,
  • 6:03 - 6:07
don't think that it lies in
your power to make that happen.
  • 6:07 - 6:10
    There's no guarantees
you're going to have a baby
  • 6:10 - 6:12
when you want to have a baby.
  • 6:12 - 6:13
    And, by the way,
  • 6:13 - 6:15
    there's no guarantee
    that the birth control
  • 6:15 - 6:17
that you use may not be the reason
  • 6:17 - 6:20
    you don't have children.
  • 6:20 - 6:25
Because birth control can mess ladies up.
  • 6:25 - 6:27
But that's something that you guys
  • 6:27 - 6:32
would want to research as well.
  • 6:32 - 6:34
    Some other things I can
    tell you dogmatically.
  • 6:34 - 6:36
God says, Be fruitful and multiply
  • 6:36 - 6:38
and fill the waters in the seas,
  • 6:38 - 6:40
and let the birds multiply on the earth.
  • 6:40 - 6:43
    Be fruitful and multiply.
  • 6:43 - 6:47
Is that a forbidding of birth control?
  • 6:47 - 6:49
    Not necessarily.
  • 6:49 - 6:51
    No more than it's a
    forbidding of singleness.
  • 6:51 - 6:52
    Right?
  • 6:52 - 6:54
    Be fruitful and multiply...
  • 6:54 - 6:55
you might look at it and say,
  • 6:55 - 6:57
well then, we should be married,
  • 6:57 - 6:59
    because you can't
    be fruitful and multiply,
  • 6:59 - 7:01
at least not in God's appointed means
  • 7:01 - 7:03
    unless I'm married.
  • 7:03 - 7:05
And yet, we know singleness is
  • 7:05 - 7:06
    advocated in Scripture.
  • 7:06 - 7:10
    So that isn't necessary a
    dogmatic command either.
  • 7:10 - 7:13
    But here's a text to
    consider on the other side.
  • 7:13 - 7:15
    1 Timothy 5:8
  • 7:15 - 7:16
    "If anyone does not
    provide for his relatives,
  • 7:16 - 7:19
    especially for the
    members of his household,
  • 7:19 - 7:20
    he has denied the faith
  • 7:20 - 7:22
and is worse than an unbeliever."
  • 7:22 - 7:24
    Is there wisdom in
    dictating and determining
  • 7:24 - 7:26
    and planning how many
    kids you're going to have?
  • 7:26 - 7:28
And trying to do it in a way that
  • 7:28 - 7:30
    you can support your family?
  • 7:30 - 7:31
    Obviously.
  • 7:31 - 7:34
    Supporting the family is
    a very important thing.
  • 7:34 - 7:37
And so, that is another consideration.
  • 7:37 - 7:39
    Bottom line,
  • 7:39 - 7:42
and this is how I'm going to end this one,
  • 7:42 - 7:45
    Romans 14:23
  • 7:45 - 7:48
"Whatsoever is not of faith is sin."
  • 7:48 - 7:51
    Let me tell you this.
  • 7:51 - 7:53
Every one of you has a responsibility
  • 7:53 - 7:55
to walk before God in faith.
  • 7:55 - 7:59
And that means that you are living a life
  • 7:59 - 8:02
    the way you believe God
would have you to do it.
  • 8:02 - 8:05
    Not the way your friend
thinks you ought to do it.
  • 8:05 - 8:08
Not the way your wife's girlfriend
thinks you ought to do it.
  • 8:08 - 8:11
Not the way mom and dad
think you need to do it.
  • 8:11 - 8:12
    Bottom line is,
  • 8:12 - 8:16
    you all have a responsibility
to walk before God in faith.
  • 8:16 - 8:19
    And that means believing
    that the path you're taking
  • 8:19 - 8:23
is the one that is most pleasing to Him.
  • 8:23 - 8:26
And if you are not convinced
  • 8:26 - 8:31
that any form of birth control
  • 8:31 - 8:33
is something that would please God,
  • 8:33 - 8:37
    then you're in sin if
    you're walking that path,
  • 8:37 - 8:41
when you don't think you ought to be.
  • 8:41 - 8:46
Folks, you need to have a clear conscience
  • 8:46 - 8:47
    before the Lord
  • 8:47 - 8:50
    in anything you allow.
