  1. If you’re working as a computer scientist, no
  2. matter whether it’s in computational biology,
  3. finance, logistics or even the secret service
  4. chances are that you will come across very
  5. tough problems that can only solved by a
  6. computer. Or so you might think because
  7. here’s the bad news. There are literally
  8. thousands of problems out there for which
  9. you might think that it’s simple for a
  10. computer to solve them, but actually it’s
  11. very hard, if downright impossible.
  12. This course introduces you to theoretical
  13. computer science. The area of computer
  14. science that deals with very hard problems.
  15. And I think that even if you plan to become
  16. a very practical computer scientist, it’s
  17. vital that you know about those theoretical
  18. concepts, plus we will also encounter
  19. some really fascinating and mind boggling
  20. results from theoretical computer science,
  21. such as deceptively simple problems that
  22. no computer will ever be able to solve.
  23. So I’m happy to invite you to take this journey
  24. into the science of challenging problems.
