Qian Julie Wang: Beautiful Country

Qian Julie Wang: Beautiful Country

“Beautiful country” is the direct English translation for “Mei Guo,” the Chinese word for America. But, as a child immigrating to New York City, Qian Julie Wang learned that America is not always or only a beautiful country. It is also a place where classmates and teachers shunned her for her limited English; where her parents worked in sweatshops, despite being professors in China; where her mother became sick, but feared the cost and scrutiny of treatment. At CHF, Wang and Greta Johnsen (Nerdette Podcast) discuss the author’s incandescent memoir Beautiful Country about the trials and triumphs of growing up as an undocumented immigrant in America.
