Poetry and PD

  • 0:02 - 0:06
My name is Maria Birdseye and I was
  • 0:06 - 0:09
diagnosed with Parkinson’s four years ago
  • 0:10 - 0:12
And I’ve been reading a lot about
  • 0:12 - 0:14
    what you can do to
  • 0:15 - 0:18
delay the progress of the disease hopefully.
  • 0:19 - 0:22
So I do a lot of exercise and
  • 0:22 - 0:28
one of the symptoms that can progress
  • 0:28 - 0:31
is that your voice gets softer
  • 0:31 - 0:34
and it’s very hard to hear you yet
  • 0:34 - 0:38
I wanted to participate in and find out if
  • 0:38 - 0:42
there was a way to strengthen my vocal cords
  • 0:42 - 0:46
now and very definitely that’s the case.
  • 0:47 - 0:50
But it’s hard to make yourself be loud
  • 0:50 - 0:54
if you’re not a loud person and
  • 0:54 - 0:57
reading a poem is something that
  • 0:57 - 1:01
I’m comfortable with and so that’s
  • 1:01 - 1:05
probably why I chose to do that today.
  • 1:06 - 1:09
    I’m a retired school teacher,
  • 1:09 - 1:12
taught middle school for thirty years
  • 1:12 - 1:19
and am very happily retired though
  • 1:19 - 1:21
Parkinson’s was not in my plans.
  • 1:21 - 1:22
    But there it is.
  • 1:25 - 1:28
This poem was read to me in a yoga class
  • 1:28 - 1:33
and it struck a chord with me because
  • 1:35 - 1:40
the poet is trying to get you to challenge
  • 1:40 - 1:44
your situation in life. It makes you think
  • 1:44 - 1:50
it changes your perspective and its one
  • 1:50 - 1:53
of the best things that a poem can do.
  • 1:56 - 1:59
The written word, whether it’s a poem or
  • 2:00 - 2:04
a play or a book or a short story,
  • 2:06 - 2:10
it captures another person’s life for you
  • 2:10 - 2:15
to share and in that respect I think
  • 2:15 - 2:17
    literature is wonderful.
  • 2:18 - 2:23
But when you think about it, anybody who
  • 2:25 - 2:28
is willing to share how they feel
  • 2:28 - 2:33
enriches us. It can’t be easy always
  • 2:33 - 2:35
    to share private thoughts.
