Secrets of The Psychics (Part 3 of 6)
-
0:00 - 0:05(narrator) If he does his job well
they want to be fooled. -
0:05 - 0:11(tutor) Uh, Sharla, could
you pass that back? Wendy? -
0:11 - 0:13(narrator) From the astrology test
each student was given a -
0:13 - 0:17detailed horoscope.
-
0:17 - 0:18(tutor) Robin, could you
pass that over. -
0:18 - 0:20(narrator) They were told it was
drawn up by a professional -
0:20 - 0:22based on information they
had supplied about when -
0:22 - 0:31and where they were born.
-
0:31 - 0:33Actually, these horoscopes
were not quite what they -
0:33 - 0:36appeared to be.
-
0:36 - 0:38I'd like you to share something
with me if you'd be so kind, -
0:38 - 0:39just with a show
of hands... -
0:39 - 0:42(narrator) I asked the students to grade
them for accuracy on a scale of one to five; -
0:42 - 0:45five being the most accurate.
-
0:45 - 0:46Uh, how many gave it
a one? -
0:46 - 0:57Let's see a show of hands.
Two, three, four and five. -
0:57 - 0:57Okay.
-
0:57 - 1:01So we scored pretty highly
with this, then. -
1:01 - 1:02Let's do a little experiment.
-
1:02 - 1:04You've got your horoscopes right
in front of you. -
1:04 - 1:06Take them in your hand like this
and hand them -
1:06 - 1:09over your shoulder to the person
behind you, -
1:09 - 1:10okay everybody?
-
1:10 - 1:12And the guy at the end down
there you'll have to come up -
1:12 - 1:13to the front because these
people in -
1:13 - 1:15the front don't have one
now. -
1:15 - 1:17Okay?
-
1:17 - 1:18Everybody change them
around? -
1:18 - 1:19Everybody's got one.
-
1:19 - 1:24Open up somebody else's
horoscope and read it carefully, please. -
1:32 - 1:32(offscreen voice) This is the same thing.
-
1:32 - 1:33Oh, it does!
-
1:33 - 1:35This is the same as mine says!
-
1:35 - 1:37What a surprise.
-
1:37 - 1:44(narrator) They had all received the same
horoscope. -
1:44 - 1:47The personality descriptions
were generally true of everyone, -
1:47 - 1:52like recently you have had to recover from a disappointment.
-
1:52 - 1:56Some of them seem specific
because they were so personal. -
1:56 - 2:00Your sexual adjustment has
presented some problems for
you. -
2:00 - 2:05And there were others that
anyone might hope would be true. -
2:05 - 2:08You have a great deal
of unused capacity. -
2:08 - 2:12People like to believe
certain things are true, -
2:12 - 2:15and they like to fall for
very specific, absolutely, -
2:15 - 2:19enormously accurate horoscopes,
right? -
2:19 - 2:21Of course they are.
-
2:21 - 2:23Did you have a question?
Yes, I have a question. -
2:23 - 2:28(offscreen voice) So why do people persist
in ascribing to these systems? -
2:28 - 2:30That's the big question,
of course, -
2:30 - 2:34and psychologically that is
the most interesting question. -
2:34 - 2:36I think that people are
trying to get some control -
2:36 - 2:37over their lives.
-
2:37 - 2:39By knowing more about
themselves of course they -
2:39 - 2:42get control over their lives,
but that's what we're doing, -
2:42 - 2:46all of us, each and every day of
our lives, whether it's financial, -
2:46 - 2:49whether it's emotional, whether it's a love interest,
-
2:49 - 2:50whether it's health,
-
2:50 - 2:52we're trying to get control of
our lives, -
2:52 - 2:56we're looking for power and
astrology offers you apparently -
2:56 - 2:58a very old and a very easy
formula -
2:58 - 3:01whereby you can do that sort of
thing. -
3:01 - 3:06What you've presented me
today is evidence that -
3:06 - 3:08this can be misused or
abused, -
3:08 - 3:10but you have not convinced me
that there is nothing to this. -
3:10 - 3:12Oh no, no, I didn't
intend to do that. -
3:12 - 3:15Okay, and I feel that your
exercise today was kind of -
3:15 - 3:18cynical and one-sided and
somehow it is wise to be -
3:18 - 3:21unbelieving of this sort of
thing. -
3:21 - 3:22Well, I can't prove it doesn't
work. -
3:22 - 3:23I can never prove it doesn't
work. -
3:23 - 3:25And I've seen a lot of times
where intellectuals have had, -
3:25 - 3:28have wanted to disprove mystical
things because since it -
3:28 - 3:29didn't fit into their framework
-
3:29 - 3:32of beliefs ...
they wouldn't allow it. -
3:32 - 3:35But I can't prove to you
that Santa Claus doesn't exist. -
3:35 - 3:37I really can't.
-
3:37 - 3:39I can't disprove anything.
-
3:39 - 3:40I can't prove a negative,
but I can show you that -
3:40 - 3:44it's not very likely to be
true. -
3:44 - 3:47That's the best I can do.
-
3:52 - 3:56(narrator) Needless to say, my
message isn't always popular. -
3:56 - 4:01My friend Ray Hyman is a
psychologist and he has an idea
why. -
4:01 - 4:03We seem to be taken, as
we're taking something -
4:03 - 4:05away and not giving
something in return, -
4:05 - 4:07and these people want something,
they're looking -
4:07 - 4:09for something and I think
we have to understand what -
4:09 - 4:12is it they're searching
for and what they're seeking. -
4:12 - 4:15(narrator) Ray has an insider's
perspective on these questions. -
4:15 - 4:18He once worked as a
professional palm reader. -
4:18 - 4:21On a recent visit to Florida he
allowed me to -
4:21 - 4:26observe while he
gave readings to two volunteers. -
4:26 - 4:28Now, I want to look at a
few other things before we -
4:28 - 4:29go very far.
-
4:29 - 4:31I looked at your thumb,
it's the most important. -
4:31 - 4:33Ray started reading palms
to help put himself -
4:33 - 4:34through college.
-
4:34 - 4:36There's a little narrowing
of the second joint here. -
4:36 - 4:40That, that's tact,
that's just tactfulness. -
4:40 - 4:43At the time he was convinced
there was nothing to it. -
4:43 - 4:45Ah, this is the
spiritual mental. -
4:45 - 4:47I had no belief that it
would work, but to be -
4:47 - 4:50convincing I did read the
books and I did study the -
4:50 - 4:55lines and told it as it's
supposed to be told and to -
4:55 - 4:58my surprise it worked, and then
it became a very -
4:58 - 5:01rapid believing in palm reading.
-
5:01 - 5:03There's a break in your
lifeline; -
5:03 - 5:04this is your lifeline right
here, -
5:04 - 5:08so you've had some physical problems and you still may
have some problems here, -
5:08 - 5:10some medical problems
of some sort. -
5:10 - 5:13He was right about that;
that I have had some -
5:13 - 5:15health problems.
-
5:15 - 5:17Is there anything
there about my mother? -
5:17 - 5:21About your mother - um,
the one thing that, -
5:21 - 5:24the thing that's clear is
that, uh, right from the -
5:24 - 5:27beginning, uh, you didn't
want to be dominated by her. -
5:27 - 5:29You wanted to make up your
own mind about what your -
5:29 - 5:31life was going to
be like and so on. -
5:31 - 5:34I have been very headstrong when
it comes to my mother, -
5:34 - 5:37and she has kind of tried to
dominate me sometimes and I've -
5:37 - 5:39rebelled against it.
-
5:39 - 5:41At the same time you
wanted to be, -
5:41 - 5:43you wanted to be on your own
terms and stuff like that. -
5:43 - 5:46He was pretty right on
the money with a lot of things. -
5:46 - 5:49Maybe he's got some part
to himself that others are -
5:49 - 5:52not in touch with and
he knows these things. -
5:52 - 5:53....concerned about the
relationship between your -
5:53 - 5:54mother and yourself.
-
5:54 - 5:58(narrator) As a palm reader Ray was
quite successful, -
5:58 - 6:00then a college friend bet him
that he would do just as -
6:00 - 6:03well if he told his
subjects the opposite of -
6:03 - 6:05what he read in their palms.
-
6:05 - 6:08He decided to give it a try.
-
6:08 - 6:12And I did this on my first client and she didn't say a
word; -
6:12 - 6:14she had no reaction at all which
is very spooky to me -
6:14 - 6:16because I'm used to feedback.
-
6:16 - 6:20I thought it was because I
bombed, but it turned out -
6:20 - 6:23because she was so stunned
I was so accurate. -
6:23 - 6:26And this was really a
shock to me because I had -
6:26 - 6:28done everything wrong,
so I did the next client -
6:28 - 6:29wrong and then I realized
it doesn't make a -
6:29 - 6:33difference what you tell
them it's more what you -
6:33 - 6:38convince them how good you
are and what you get them to believe. -
6:38 - 6:40(narrator) As a professional psychologist,
-
6:40 - 6:43Ray is very much aware of the
role that careful observation -
6:43 - 6:45can play in a reading.
-
6:45 - 6:47You're living in a strange
world. -
6:47 - 6:51You'd be better if you're living
maybe 50, -
6:51 - 6:5340 years ago in some ways.
-
6:53 - 6:56I've always said that, I
should've been born a long
time ago. -
6:56 - 7:00This present world is, is,
presents problems for you -
7:00 - 7:02and you're not
too happy with it. -
7:02 - 7:03You'd be much better...
-
7:03 - 7:05From the way she was
dressed and so on, I could -
7:05 - 7:08say that she'd rather be living
in an earlier time than today; -
7:08 - 7:10in fact she was dressed for an
earlier time anyway. -
7:10 - 7:12There's a change.
-
7:12 - 7:13There's been uh, there for
a while looked like you -
7:13 - 7:17had two jobs or two
careers, I'm not sure, -
7:17 - 7:19and, uh, very recently you have
switched. -
7:19 - 7:22In fact there's been a major
career change. -
7:22 - 7:25I've been in the same career for
six years. -
7:25 - 7:28Next year I'm thinking about
changing careers, -
7:28 - 7:31but I haven't done it yet so he
could just be a -
7:31 - 7:34little off on his timing.
-
7:34 - 7:37If you set people up right
you can tell them most anything. -
7:37 - 7:38If they've really got a
creative and intelligent -
7:38 - 7:40mind they can make sense out
of naught. -
7:40 - 7:42How crazy it seems to be, they
can find a way of, -
7:42 - 7:48of reinterpreting it so it
really fits them like a glove. -
7:48 - 7:50This person wants
me to succeed. -
7:50 - 7:53I should work out
some accommodation. -
7:55 - 7:57Well you certainly
don't need someone to -
7:57 - 7:59deliberately fool you to
have what seems to be a -
7:59 - 8:00psychic experience.
-
8:00 - 8:03Your mind can create one all
by itself. -
8:03 - 8:05Let's say you don't like
to fly and you're worried -
8:05 - 8:07about a trip you're going to
take then suddenly -
8:07 - 8:08during the flight the
plane suddenly, whoa, -
8:08 - 8:12drops a few thousand feet
because of a downdraft. -
8:12 - 8:14You might very well choose
to think that you had some -
8:14 - 8:17kind of psychic intuition
about this, -
8:17 - 8:19but what you forget is that
you've had that same queasy -
8:19 - 8:22feeling every time you've gotten
on an airplane and if it -
8:22 - 8:25doesn't fulfill itself,
you forget about it. -
8:25 - 8:27You see, the brain is
constantly searching for -
8:27 - 8:28relationships.
-
8:28 - 8:31It's trying to work out
cause and effect so we can -
8:31 - 8:33know what to expect
in our lives. -
8:33 - 8:34That's natural.
-
8:34 - 8:36The brain is very good at this
but it does make mistakes, -
8:36 - 8:39and one way to explain these
mistakes is by some kind -
8:39 - 8:43of psychic explanation.
-
8:47 - 8:51My investigations have
taken me to dozens of countries, -
8:51 - 8:52but until recently one of the
most -
8:52 - 8:57interesting wasn't open to
scrutiny. -
8:59 - 9:01It's long been rumored that
Russia harbors -
9:01 - 9:06psychic talent like nowhere
else in the world. -
9:06 - 9:09The country has an
ancient, -
9:09 - 9:11mystical tradition, and the
government has encouraged -
9:11 - 9:13psychic research.
-
9:13 - 9:15To Moscow?
That's right. -
9:15 - 9:16Any luggage to
check in, sir? -
9:16 - 9:19Two pieces.
-
9:21 - 9:24Now that the country is
open to visitors, I wanted -
9:24 - 9:28to check things out for
myself. -
9:30 - 9:37I've seen the films that
came out during the Cold War. -
9:37 - 9:40Juno was a famous healer
who had Brezhnev as a client. -
9:49 - 9:51Karl Nikolaiev could
apparently turn on lights -
9:51 - 9:55with the force of his will.
