A path to higher education and employment for refugees

  • Not Synced
Saida Aden Said: I still have
this horrific image in my mind.
  • Not Synced
I could see people falling down,
  • Not Synced
    gunshots.
  • Not Synced
    I was so terrified.
  • Not Synced
Really, I was crying a lot.
  • Not Synced
Someone who knew my father and my mom
  • Not Synced
grabbed my hand, and he said,
    "Let's go. Let's go. Let's go."
  • Not Synced
And I was, like, "Where's my mom?
    My mom? My mom?"
  • Not Synced
    Noria Dambrine Dusabireme:
During nights we would hear shots,
  • Not Synced
    we would hear guns.
  • Not Synced
    Elections were supposed to happen.
  • Not Synced
We had young people going in the street.
  • Not Synced
    They were having strikes,
  • Not Synced
and most of them, people died.
  • Not Synced
    SAS: We boarded a vehicle.
  • Not Synced
    It was overloaded.
  • Not Synced
People were running for their lives.
  • Not Synced
That is how I fled from Somalia.
  • Not Synced
    My mom missed me.
  • Not Synced
Nobody told her where I went.
  • Not Synced
    NDD: The fact that
we did not go to school,
  • Not Synced
we couldn't go to the market,
    we were just stuck home
  • Not Synced
made me realize that if I got an option
    to go for something better,
  • Not Synced
I could just go for it
    and have a better future.
  • Not Synced
    (Music)
  • Not Synced
    Ignazio Matteini: Globally,
    displaced people in the world
  • Not Synced
    have been increasing.
  • Not Synced
Now there are almost 60 million
    people displaced in the world.
  • Not Synced
    And unfortunately it doesn't stop.
  • Not Synced
    Chrystina Russell: I think
    the humanitarian community
  • Not Synced
    is starting to realize
    from research and reality
  • Not Synced
    that we're talking about
    a much more permanent problem.
  • Not Synced
    Baylie Damtie Yeshita: These students,
    they need a tertiary education,
  • Not Synced
a degree that they can use.
  • Not Synced
If the students are living now in Rwanda,
  • Not Synced
    if they get relocated,
still they can continue their study.
  • Not Synced
    Still, their degree is useful,
    wherever they are.
  • Not Synced
    CR: Our audacious project
    was to really test
  • Not Synced
    Southern New Hampshire University's
    global education movement's
  • Not Synced
    ability to scale,
  • Not Synced
    to bring bachelor's degrees
    and pathways to employment
  • Not Synced
to refugees and those who would otherwise
not have access to higher education.
  • Not Synced
    SAS: It was almost impossible,
    as a refugee person,
  • Not Synced
    to further my education
  • Not Synced
    and to make my career.
  • Not Synced
My name is Saida Aden Said,
  • Not Synced
    and I am from Somalia.
  • Not Synced
I was nine years old when I came to Kakuma
  • Not Synced
and I started going to school at 17.
  • Not Synced
Now I am doing my bachelor degree
  • Not Synced
    with SNHU.
  • Not Synced
NDD: My name is Noria Dambrine Dusabireme.
  • Not Synced
I'm doing my bachelor of arts
    in communications
  • Not Synced
    with a concentration in business.
  • Not Synced
    CR: We are serving students
    across five different countries:
  • Not Synced
    Lebanon, Kenya, Malawi,
    Rwanda and South Africa.
  • Not Synced
Really proud to have 800 AA grads
    to over 400 bachelor's graduates,
  • Not Synced
    and nearly a thousand students
    enrolled right now.
  • Not Synced
    So the magic of this
  • Not Synced
    is that we're addressing
    refugee lives as they exist.
  • Not Synced
    There are no classes.
  • Not Synced
    There are no lectures.
  • Not Synced
    There are no due dates.
  • Not Synced
    There are no final exams.
  • Not Synced
    This degree is competency-based
    and not time-bound.
  • Not Synced
You choose when you start your project.
  • Not Synced
    You choose how you're
    going to approach it.
  • Not Synced
NDD: When you open the platform,
that's where you can see the goals.
  • Not Synced
Under each goal, we can find projects.
  • Not Synced
    When you open a project,
    you get the competencies
  • Not Synced
    that you have to master,
  • Not Synced
    directions,
  • Not Synced
    an overview of the project.
  • Not Synced
CR: The secret sauce of SNHU
  • Not Synced
    is combining that
    competency-based online learning
  • Not Synced
    with an in-person learning
    that we do with partners
  • Not Synced
to provide all the wrap-around supports.
  • Not Synced
    That includes academic coaching.
  • Not Synced
    It means psychosocial support,
  • Not Synced
    medical support,
  • Not Synced
and it's also the back end
    employment support
  • Not Synced
    that's really resulting
    in the 95 percent graduation,
  • Not Synced
    the 88 percent employment.
  • Not Synced
NDD: I'm a social media management intern.
  • Not Synced
    It's related to the communications
    degree I'm doing.
  • Not Synced
    I've learned so many things
out of the project and in the real world.
  • Not Synced
    CR: The structured internship
    is really an opportunity
  • Not Synced
for students to practice their skills,
  • Not Synced
    for us to create connections
    between that internship
  • Not Synced
    and a later job opportunity.
  • Not Synced
    (Music)
  • Not Synced
This is a model that really
    stops putting time
  • Not Synced
    and university policies
    and procedures at the center
  • Not Synced
    and instead puts the student
    at the center.
  • Not Synced
    IM: The SNHU model
  • Not Synced
is a big way to shake the tree.
  • Not Synced
    Huge.
  • Not Synced
It's a huge shake to the traditional way
    of having tertiary education here.
  • Not Synced
    BDY: It can transform
    the lives of students
  • Not Synced
    from these vulnerable
    and refugee communities.
  • Not Synced
NDD: If I get the degree,
  • Not Synced
I can just come back and work
    everywhere that I want.
  • Not Synced
I can go for a masters
    confidently in English,
  • Not Synced
    which is something that I
would not have dreamt of before,
  • Not Synced
    and I have the confidence
    and the skills required
  • Not Synced
    to actually go out
    and just tackle the workplace
  • Not Synced
    without having to fear
    that I can't make it.
  • Not Synced
    SAS: I always wanted
    to work with the community.
  • Not Synced
I want to establish a nonprofit.
  • Not Synced
    We advocate for women education.
  • Not Synced
    I want to be someone
  • Not Synced
    who is, like, ambassador
  • Not Synced
    and encouraging them to learn
  • Not Synced
and tell them it is never too late.
  • Not Synced
    It's a dream.
