Intermediate Rhythm Guitar 1 (Guitar Lesson IM-115) How to play IF Stage 1
-
0:11 - 0:13Hi, how are you doing?
Justin here. -
0:13 - 0:17Welcome to IM-115,
which is a first look at rhythm guitar -
0:17 - 0:20as part of this intermediate foundation series.
-
0:20 - 0:22Now, what we're gonna be looking at today
-
0:22 - 0:25is an introduction to 16th note strumming.
-
0:25 - 0:27As part of the beginner's course
-
0:27 - 0:29we mainly looked at 8th note
strumming patterns. -
0:29 - 0:34Now, 8th note strumming patterns
have kind of 8 avaliable strums in a bar. -
0:34 - 0:36So, you don't have to strum
all of them of course. -
0:36 - 0:39You could choose which ones you played
out of those 8. -
0:39 - 0:41But there were kind of 8 options,
if you like. -
0:41 - 0:44We always strummed down
on the beat, -
0:44 - 0:45which was the 1, 2, 3 and 4,
-
0:45 - 0:49and we had in between each one of those
an up strum. -
0:49 - 0:50So we kinda had
-
0:50 - 0:551 and 2 and 3 and 4 and
-
0:55 - 0:56They were all options.
-
0:56 - 0:57And we could choose
-
0:57 - 1:001, 2, 3, and, 4
-
1:00 - 1:03or 1, and, 2, and, 3, and, 4
-
1:03 - 1:04Whatever, it didn't matter.
-
1:04 - 1:06That was how our hand was moving.
-
1:06 - 1:07We just had
-
1:07 - 1:111, and, 2, and, 3, and, 4, and
-
1:11 - 1:14And it suits a lot of styles,
that 8th note strumming -
1:14 - 1:15and it sounds really good
-
1:15 - 1:16that's an important part
of playing guitar. -
1:16 - 1:18It's not like an beginnery kind of thing,
you know. -
1:18 - 1:21It's an essential skill that every one uses.
-
1:21 - 1:26But there's another slightly more
interesting type of strumming -
1:26 - 1:27which is a 16th note strumming.
-
1:27 - 1:31Now, the first interesting thing
about 16th note strumming -
1:31 - 1:32that you can look at
-
1:32 - 1:34and it's nice introduction to it
-
1:34 - 1:38is instead of playing 8th notes
with a down and an up -
1:38 - 1:41you strum them all as down.
-
1:41 - 1:43So instead of having,
if we have here a beat -
1:43 - 1:471, and, 2, and, 3, and, 4, and
-
1:47 - 1:51down, up, down, up, down, up, down
-
1:51 - 1:52we go
-
1:52 - 1:571, and, 2, and, 3, and, 4, and
-
1:57 - 2:01down, down, down, down,
down, down, down, down -
2:01 - 2:03So it's essentially the same rhythm.
-
2:03 - 2:05We're still just looking at 8th notes
-
2:05 - 2:071, and, 2, and, 3, and, 4, and
-
2:07 - 2:08But instead of going
-
2:08 - 2:10down, up, down, up,
down, up, down, up -
2:10 - 2:11we go
-
2:11 - 2:13down, down, down, down,
down, down, down, down -
2:13 - 2:16And it's got a slightly different
kind of feeling too -
2:16 - 2:18as soon as you start using
all downstrokes. -
2:18 - 2:20Always think you kind of pushing it forward
-
2:20 - 2:23or it allowes you to seat on the beats
slightly differently. -
2:23 - 2:26And you can feel a little more energetic,
you know. -
2:26 - 2:29So, if I just do it again now
-
2:29 - 2:30and if you just listen
-
2:30 - 2:31so here is the first one
-
2:31 - 2:39. . .
-
2:39 - 2:40here is all downs
-
2:40 - 2:48. . .
-
2:48 - 2:49Still strumming the same
-
2:49 - 2:50still
-
2:50 - 2:52sorry, still tapping the foot the same
-
2:52 - 2:55. . .
-
2:55 - 3:00still only taping the foot
on the 1, 2, 3 and 4 -
3:00 - 3:041, and, 2, and 3, and, 4, and
-
3:04 - 3:06It's really important that you've got
that foot tapping -
3:06 - 3:08still just on the 1, 2, 3 and 4
-
3:08 - 3:10Now of course some of you
probably already realized, -
3:10 - 3:13that if I'm doing all of those downstrokes
-
3:13 - 3:15then there's an up strumming
between every one of those. -
3:15 - 3:17I'm just not playing it
at the moment. -
3:17 - 3:19So eventually what you end up with
-
3:19 - 3:21instead of having a beat
-
3:21 - 3:23like 1, 2, 3 and 4 being divided by 2
-
3:23 - 3:24with a down and an up
-
3:24 - 3:26we end up being able to divide it by 4.
-
3:26 - 3:30So down, up, down, up.
-
3:30 - 3:351, e, and, a, 2, e, and, a
3, e, and, a, 4, e, and, a -
3:35 - 3:38there is our 'ands' (plays)
-
3:38 - 3:411, and, 2, and, 3,
-
3:41 - 3:42that's all downstrokes
-
3:42 - 3:44then we're adding the ups as well
-
3:44 - 3:491, e, and, a, 2, e, and, a,
3, e, and, a, 4, e, and, a -
3:49 - 3:51Now we've got a new counting system for this.
-
3:51 - 3:55We still keep the 1 and the 'and',
or the number and the 'and', -
3:55 - 3:59but we also add now an 'e',
and an 'a' for the upstrokes. -
3:59 - 4:01So the count that we end up having is
-
4:01 - 4:071, e, and, a, 2, e, and, a,
3, e, and, a, 4, e, and, a -
4:07 - 4:09That's a very good thing to practice.
-
4:09 - 4:12It might seem funny to be doing that,
-
4:12 - 4:14but is a good thing to actually
just practice speaking and saying -
4:14 - 4:181, e, and, a, 2, e, and, a,
3, e, and, a, 4, e, and, a -
4:18 - 4:20It will help you later,
-
4:20 - 4:22when the patterns start to get
a bit more complex. -
4:22 - 4:24If you can vocalise it,
it does make it easier. -
4:24 - 4:25So that's a first little thing to practice.
-
4:25 - 4:27Is practice just saying:
-
4:27 - 4:291, e, and, a, 2, e, and, a,
3, e, and, a, 4, e, and, a -
4:29 - 4:31Get it so rolls of the tongue
-
4:31 - 4:33and you'll feel comfortable with it.
-
4:33 - 4:35Now, what's really important here is that
-
4:35 - 4:38and it's a mistake that a lot of people make
when they start doing 16th note strumming -
4:38 - 4:40is that they've built up a connection
-
4:40 - 4:43between a down strum and a foot tap
-
4:43 - 4:45which when you're doing
8th note strumming is great, -
4:45 - 4:47that's a really important thing to be doing,
-
4:47 - 4:50but when you start going moving
into 16th note strumming -
4:50 - 4:54you need to be remembered
that you're just tapping your foot on the beat -
4:54 - 4:56on the 1, 2, 3 and 4
not on the down strum -
4:56 - 4:57Because this
-
4:57 - 5:01Remember when I were doing a down strum
on the 'and' as well? -
5:01 - 5:03So, we end up here with
-
5:03 - 5:05I'm going to call over exaggerate
the foot tap now -
5:05 - 5:06and I'm going to knock my head about
-
5:06 - 5:09I know it's gonna look a bit silly
but hopefully you'll get the idea. -
5:09 - 5:10So, what you want to be doing now
-
5:10 - 5:11just really slowly
-
5:11 - 5:13is making sure that
you tap your foot on the beat -
5:13 - 5:15an you've got the 4 strums
-
5:15 - 5:17so down, up, down, up
in each beat. -
5:17 - 5:18So you have here
-
5:18 - 5:261, e, and, a, 2, e, and, a,
3, e, and, a, 4, e, and, a -
5:26 - 5:29Just make sure that you tap your foot
-
5:29 - 5:32on the number
-
5:32 - 5:381, e, and, a, 2, e, and, a,
3, e, and, a, 4, e, and, a -
5:38 - 5:42. . .
-
5:42 - 5:45Really give it a good solid tap
with your foot. -
5:45 - 5:48That really makes sure
that you're feeling where that beat is. -
5:48 - 5:50Now something that can help you
doing that as well -
5:50 - 5:51if you're struggling with the foot thing:
-
5:51 - 5:53leave the foot for a little while
-
5:53 - 5:54and just try and accent the beat.
-
5:54 - 5:58So make the one that is on
1, 2, 3 or 4 louder with your strum -
5:58 - 6:01and the other
or make the other ones quieter -
6:01 - 6:02it's often a good little trick to think of it,
-
6:02 - 6:03or both:
-
6:03 - 6:05make your accent louder
on the 1, 2, 3 and 4 -
6:05 - 6:08and make the other ones
quite softly strummed, you know. -
6:08 - 6:10We've experimented a bit
with dynamics already -
6:10 - 6:12and this is kind of puting it into use.
-
6:12 - 6:14So, in that case forget about the foot
and just have -
6:14 - 6:211, e, and, a, 2, e, and, a,
3, e, and, a, 4, e, and, a -
6:21 - 6:27. . .
-
6:27 - 6:32Learning to do this accent is really important.
-
6:32 - 6:35Later on we're going to move
that accent around a little bit -
6:35 - 6:36It won't always be on the beat
-
6:36 - 6:38but you need to be able to do it
on the beat of course first. -
6:38 - 6:40So that would be your next step,
you know -
6:40 - 6:43after trying having to go it
doing with the foot -
6:43 - 6:48as well and/or you want to start doing this
with the accent patterns. -
6:48 - 6:50So just
-
6:50 - 6:52accenting the the first of every group of 4.
-
6:52 - 6:58. . .
-
6:58 - 6:59Maybe add your foot in as well.
-
6:59 - 7:03. . .
-
7:03 - 7:05Try to keep it as even as you can.
-
7:05 - 7:10. . .
-
7:10 - 7:14And once you feel kinda comfortable with that,
start with a friend. -
7:14 - 7:16Say hello to your friend,
Mr. Metronome! -
7:16 - 7:19Now, probably what I'd recommend
is about 60 BPM -
7:19 - 7:23And I'm gonna show you
how to get through with your metronome. -
7:23 - 7:25There we go,
it's on at 60. -
7:25 - 7:30And what you can start of with,
just strum on the beat. -
7:31 - 7:34This is an easy way
to get into working with a metronome. -
7:34 - 7:35Just with the downstroke.
-
7:35 - 7:36Then add the 'ands'.
-
7:37 - 7:39Just all downs.
-
7:40 - 7:441, and, 2, and,
3, and, 4, and -
7:44 - 7:46And when you feel comfortable
with doing that -
7:46 - 7:48add in the upstrokes.
-
7:48 - 7:54. . .
-
7:54 - 7:56And with the accent of course.
-
7:56 - 8:02. . .
-
8:02 - 8:04And, hopefully, your foot as well.
-
8:04 - 8:06And your foot should be clicking
-
8:06 - 8:08exactly along with the metronome.
-
8:08 - 8:15. . .
-
8:15 - 8:18Now, lot of people struggle with this,
-
8:18 - 8:21especially getting the foot
to just tap on the beat. -
8:21 - 8:22It's not difficult.
-
8:22 - 8:24As with most of the things on the guitar,
-
8:24 - 8:26if you can't do it,
the trick is to do it slower. -
8:26 - 8:28So even if you end up going like:
-
8:28 - 8:31. . .
-
8:31 - 8:31Tap!
-
8:31 - 8:34. . .
-
8:34 - 8:34Tap!
-
8:34 - 8:36You know, like really, really slowly
-
8:36 - 8:37or even slower if you want.
-
8:37 - 8:39It's not about the speed,
-
8:39 - 8:41it's about getting the coordination.
-
8:41 - 8:43Once you're doing it right,
it's quite easy to speed up. -
8:43 - 8:45It's doing it right,
that's the most important bit. -
8:45 - 8:46Doesn't matter the speed.
-
8:46 - 8:50Just make sure you get it right,
practice it really nice and slow. -
8:50 - 8:53Once you've got it with your foot, and the strum,
and you can do an accent -
8:53 - 8:54then put it to a metronome.
-
8:54 - 8:56And that is enough practise for now.
-
8:56 - 8:58That's what we're kind of trying to get you into.
-
8:58 - 9:00This is introducion to 16th note patterns,
-
9:00 - 9:04so in the next few weeks,
we can start adding interesting -
9:04 - 9:06like interesting accents
-
9:06 - 9:07and/or leaving out some notes
-
9:07 - 9:08adding in some extra things
-
9:08 - 9:10It get's really good fun.
-
9:10 - 9:1216th note strumming is pretty cool,
I'm thinking. -
9:12 - 9:16Most of the popy/rock stuff
that you're gonna get -
9:16 - 9:18is done with this 16th note style.
-
9:18 - 9:20It even applies to picking
and lead guitar later on, -
9:20 - 9:23but let's not get ahead of us,
I would say. -
9:23 - 9:27So, that's your practise now is going through
practising your 8th note strumming -
9:27 - 9:30merging it into 16th note strumming
with all downstrums -
9:30 - 9:34and then adding in the proper 16ths
with the downs and the ups -
9:34 - 9:35with the metronome.
-
9:35 - 9:36That's your work.
-
9:36 - 9:39Have fun with that and I'll see you
for another lesson sometimes real soon. -
9:39 - 9:41Take care of yourself, bye bye!
