Intermediate Rhythm Guitar 1 (Guitar Lesson IM-115) How to play IF Stage 1

  • 0:11 - 0:13
    Hi, how are you doing?
    Justin here.
  • 0:13 - 0:17
    Welcome to IM-115,
which is a first look at rhythm guitar
  • 0:17 - 0:20
as part of this intermediate foundation series.
  • 0:20 - 0:22
Now, what we're gonna be looking at today
  • 0:22 - 0:25
is an introduction to 16th note strumming.
  • 0:25 - 0:27
As part of the beginner's course
  • 0:27 - 0:29
we mainly looked at 8th note
    strumming patterns.
  • 0:29 - 0:34
    Now, 8th note strumming patterns
have kind of 8 avaliable strums in a bar.
  • 0:34 - 0:36
So, you don't have to strum
    all of them of course.
  • 0:36 - 0:39
You could choose which ones you played
    out of those 8.
  • 0:39 - 0:41
But there were kind of 8 options,
    if you like.
  • 0:41 - 0:44
    We always strummed down
    on the beat,
  • 0:44 - 0:45
    which was the 1, 2, 3 and 4,
  • 0:45 - 0:49
and we had in between each one of those
    an up strum.
  • 0:49 - 0:50
    So we kinda had
  • 0:50 - 0:55
    1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and
  • 0:55 - 0:56
    They were all options.
  • 0:56 - 0:57
    And we could choose
  • 0:57 - 1:00
    1, 2, 3, and, 4
  • 1:00 - 1:03
    or 1, and, 2, and, 3, and, 4
  • 1:03 - 1:04
    Whatever, it didn't matter.
  • 1:04 - 1:06
That was how our hand was moving.
  • 1:06 - 1:07
    We just had
  • 1:07 - 1:11
    1, and, 2, and, 3, and, 4, and
  • 1:11 - 1:14
And it suits a lot of styles,
    that 8th note strumming
  • 1:14 - 1:15
    and it sounds really good
  • 1:15 - 1:16
    that's an important part
    of playing guitar.
  • 1:16 - 1:18
It's not like an beginnery kind of thing,
    you know.
  • 1:18 - 1:21
It's an essential skill that every one uses.
  • 1:21 - 1:26
    But there's another slightly more
    interesting type of strumming
  • 1:26 - 1:27
which is a 16th note strumming.
  • 1:27 - 1:31
    Now, the first interesting thing
    about 16th note strumming
  • 1:31 - 1:32
    that you can look at
  • 1:32 - 1:34
and it's nice introduction to it
  • 1:34 - 1:38
is instead of playing 8th notes
with a down and an up
  • 1:38 - 1:41
you strum them all as down.
  • 1:41 - 1:43
    So instead of having,
if we have here a beat
  • 1:43 - 1:47
    1, and, 2, and, 3, and, 4, and
  • 1:47 - 1:51
down, up, down, up, down, up, down
  • 1:51 - 1:52
    we go
  • 1:52 - 1:57
    1, and, 2, and, 3, and, 4, and
  • 1:57 - 2:01
    down, down, down, down,
    down, down, down, down
  • 2:01 - 2:03
So it's essentially the same rhythm.
  • 2:03 - 2:05
We're still just looking at 8th notes
  • 2:05 - 2:07
    1, and, 2, and, 3, and, 4, and
  • 2:07 - 2:08
    But instead of going
  • 2:08 - 2:10
    down, up, down, up,
    down, up, down, up
  • 2:10 - 2:11
    we go
  • 2:11 - 2:13
    down, down, down, down,
    down, down, down, down
  • 2:13 - 2:16
And it's got a slightly different
    kind of feeling too
  • 2:16 - 2:18
as soon as you start using
    all downstrokes.
  • 2:18 - 2:20
Always think you kind of pushing it forward
  • 2:20 - 2:23
or it allowes you to seat on the beats
    slightly differently.
  • 2:23 - 2:26
And you can feel a little more energetic,
    you know.
  • 2:26 - 2:29
So, if I just do it again now
  • 2:29 - 2:30
    and if you just listen
  • 2:30 - 2:31
so here is the first one
  • 2:31 - 2:39
    . . .
  • 2:39 - 2:40
    here is all downs
  • 2:40 - 2:48
    . . .
  • 2:48 - 2:49
    Still strumming the same
  • 2:49 - 2:50
    still
  • 2:50 - 2:52
sorry, still tapping the foot the same
  • 2:52 - 2:55
    . . .
  • 2:55 - 3:00
    still only taping the foot
    on the 1, 2, 3 and 4
  • 3:00 - 3:04
    1, and, 2, and 3, and, 4, and
  • 3:04 - 3:06
It's really important that you've got
    that foot tapping
  • 3:06 - 3:08
    still just on the 1, 2, 3 and 4
  • 3:08 - 3:10
Now of course some of you
    probably already realized,
  • 3:10 - 3:13
that if I'm doing all of those downstrokes
  • 3:13 - 3:15
    then there's an up strumming
    between every one of those.
  • 3:15 - 3:17
    I'm just not playing it
    at the moment.
  • 3:17 - 3:19
So eventually what you end up with
  • 3:19 - 3:21
    instead of having a beat
  • 3:21 - 3:23
    like 1, 2, 3 and 4 being divided by 2
  • 3:23 - 3:24
with a down and an up
  • 3:24 - 3:26
we end up being able to divide it by 4.
  • 3:26 - 3:30
    So down, up, down, up.
  • 3:30 - 3:35
    1, e, and, a, 2, e, and, a
    3, e, and, a, 4, e, and, a
  • 3:35 - 3:38
    there is our 'ands' (plays)
  • 3:38 - 3:41
    1, and, 2, and, 3,
  • 3:41 - 3:42
    that's all downstrokes
  • 3:42 - 3:44
then we're adding the ups as well
  • 3:44 - 3:49
    1, e, and, a, 2, e, and, a,
    3, e, and, a, 4, e, and, a
  • 3:49 - 3:51
Now we've got a new counting system for this.
  • 3:51 - 3:55
We still keep the 1 and the 'and',
or the number and the 'and',
  • 3:55 - 3:59
but we also add now an 'e',
and an 'a' for the upstrokes.
  • 3:59 - 4:01
So the count that we end up having is
  • 4:01 - 4:07
    1, e, and, a, 2, e, and, a,
    3, e, and, a, 4, e, and, a
  • 4:07 - 4:09
That's a very good thing to practice.
  • 4:09 - 4:12
It might seem funny to be doing that,
  • 4:12 - 4:14
but is a good thing to actually
    just practice speaking and saying
  • 4:14 - 4:18
    1, e, and, a, 2, e, and, a,
    3, e, and, a, 4, e, and, a
  • 4:18 - 4:20
    It will help you later,
  • 4:20 - 4:22
when the patterns start to get
    a bit more complex.
  • 4:22 - 4:24
    If you can vocalise it,
    it does make it easier.
  • 4:24 - 4:25
So that's a first little thing to practice.
  • 4:25 - 4:27
    Is practice just saying:
  • 4:27 - 4:29
    1, e, and, a, 2, e, and, a,
    3, e, and, a, 4, e, and, a
  • 4:29 - 4:31
Get it so rolls of the tongue
  • 4:31 - 4:33
and you'll feel comfortable with it.
  • 4:33 - 4:35
Now, what's really important here is that
  • 4:35 - 4:38
and it's a mistake that a lot of people make
when they start doing 16th note strumming
  • 4:38 - 4:40
is that they've built up a connection
  • 4:40 - 4:43
between a down strum and a foot tap
  • 4:43 - 4:45
    which when you're doing
    8th note strumming is great,
  • 4:45 - 4:47
that's a really important thing to be doing,
  • 4:47 - 4:50
but when you start going moving
    into 16th note strumming
  • 4:50 - 4:54
    you need to be remembered
that you're just tapping your foot on the beat
  • 4:54 - 4:56
    on the 1, 2, 3 and 4
    not on the down strum
  • 4:56 - 4:57
    Because this
  • 4:57 - 5:01
Remember when I were doing a down strum
    on the 'and' as well?
  • 5:01 - 5:03
So, we end up here with
  • 5:03 - 5:05
I'm going to call over exaggerate
    the foot tap now
  • 5:05 - 5:06
and I'm going to knock my head about
  • 5:06 - 5:09
I know it's gonna look a bit silly
but hopefully you'll get the idea.
  • 5:09 - 5:10
So, what you want to be doing now
  • 5:10 - 5:11
    just really slowly
  • 5:11 - 5:13
    is making sure that
you tap your foot on the beat
  • 5:13 - 5:15
an you've got the 4 strums
  • 5:15 - 5:17
    so down, up, down, up
    in each beat.
  • 5:17 - 5:18
    So you have here
  • 5:18 - 5:26
    1, e, and, a, 2, e, and, a,
    3, e, and, a, 4, e, and, a
  • 5:26 - 5:29
Just make sure that you tap your foot
  • 5:29 - 5:32
    on the number
  • 5:32 - 5:38
    1, e, and, a, 2, e, and, a,
    3, e, and, a, 4, e, and, a
  • 5:38 - 5:42
    . . .
  • 5:42 - 5:45
Really give it a good solid tap
    with your foot.
  • 5:45 - 5:48
    That really makes sure
that you're feeling where that beat is.
  • 5:48 - 5:50
Now something that can help you
    doing that as well
  • 5:50 - 5:51
if you're struggling with the foot thing:
  • 5:51 - 5:53
leave the foot for a little while
  • 5:53 - 5:54
and just try and accent the beat.
  • 5:54 - 5:58
So make the one that is on
    1, 2, 3 or 4 louder with your strum
  • 5:58 - 6:01
    and the other
or make the other ones quieter
  • 6:01 - 6:02
it's often a good little trick to think of it,
  • 6:02 - 6:03
    or both:
  • 6:03 - 6:05
    make your accent louder
    on the 1, 2, 3 and 4
  • 6:05 - 6:08
    and make the other ones
    quite softly strummed, you know.
  • 6:08 - 6:10
    We've experimented a bit
    with dynamics already
  • 6:10 - 6:12
and this is kind of puting it into use.
  • 6:12 - 6:14
So, in that case forget about the foot
    and just have
  • 6:14 - 6:21
    1, e, and, a, 2, e, and, a,
    3, e, and, a, 4, e, and, a
  • 6:21 - 6:27
    . . .
  • 6:27 - 6:32
Learning to do this accent is really important.
  • 6:32 - 6:35
Later on we're going to move
that accent around a little bit
  • 6:35 - 6:36
It won't always be on the beat
  • 6:36 - 6:38
but you need to be able to do it
on the beat of course first.
  • 6:38 - 6:40
So that would be your next step,
    you know
  • 6:40 - 6:43
after trying having to go it
    doing with the foot
  • 6:43 - 6:48
as well and/or you want to start doing this
    with the accent patterns.
  • 6:48 - 6:50
    So just
  • 6:50 - 6:52
accenting the the first of every group of 4.
  • 6:52 - 6:58
    . . .
  • 6:58 - 6:59
Maybe add your foot in as well.
  • 6:59 - 7:03
    . . .
  • 7:03 - 7:05
Try to keep it as even as you can.
  • 7:05 - 7:10
    . . .
  • 7:10 - 7:14
And once you feel kinda comfortable with that,
    start with a friend.
  • 7:14 - 7:16
    Say hello to your friend,
    Mr. Metronome!
  • 7:16 - 7:19
    Now, probably what I'd recommend
    is about 60 BPM
  • 7:19 - 7:23
    And I'm gonna show you
how to get through with your metronome.
  • 7:23 - 7:25
    There we go,
    it's on at 60.
  • 7:25 - 7:30
And what you can start of with,
    just strum on the beat.
  • 7:31 - 7:34
    This is an easy way
to get into working with a metronome.
  • 7:34 - 7:35
    Just with the downstroke.
  • 7:35 - 7:36
    Then add the 'ands'.
  • 7:37 - 7:39
    Just all downs.
  • 7:40 - 7:44
    1, and, 2, and,
    3, and, 4, and
  • 7:44 - 7:46
    And when you feel comfortable
    with doing that
  • 7:46 - 7:48
    add in the upstrokes.
  • 7:48 - 7:54
    . . .
  • 7:54 - 7:56
And with the accent of course.
  • 7:56 - 8:02
    . . .
  • 8:02 - 8:04
And, hopefully, your foot as well.
  • 8:04 - 8:06
And your foot should be clicking
  • 8:06 - 8:08
    exactly along with the metronome.
  • 8:08 - 8:15
    . . .
  • 8:15 - 8:18
Now, lot of people struggle with this,
  • 8:18 - 8:21
    especially getting the foot
to just tap on the beat.
  • 8:21 - 8:22
    It's not difficult.
  • 8:22 - 8:24
As with most of the things on the guitar,
  • 8:24 - 8:26
    if you can't do it,
the trick is to do it slower.
  • 8:26 - 8:28
So even if you end up going like:
  • 8:28 - 8:31
    . . .
  • 8:31 - 8:31
    Tap!
  • 8:31 - 8:34
    . . .
  • 8:34 - 8:34
    Tap!
  • 8:34 - 8:36
You know, like really, really slowly
  • 8:36 - 8:37
or even slower if you want.
  • 8:37 - 8:39
    It's not about the speed,
  • 8:39 - 8:41
    it's about getting the coordination.
  • 8:41 - 8:43
    Once you're doing it right,
it's quite easy to speed up.
  • 8:43 - 8:45
    It's doing it right,
    that's the most important bit.
  • 8:45 - 8:46
    Doesn't matter the speed.
  • 8:46 - 8:50
Just make sure you get it right,
practice it really nice and slow.
  • 8:50 - 8:53
Once you've got it with your foot, and the strum,
and you can do an accent
  • 8:53 - 8:54
then put it to a metronome.
  • 8:54 - 8:56
And that is enough practise for now.
  • 8:56 - 8:58
That's what we're kind of trying to get you into.
  • 8:58 - 9:00
This is introducion to 16th note patterns,
  • 9:00 - 9:04
so in the next few weeks,
    we can start adding interesting
  • 9:04 - 9:06
    like interesting accents
  • 9:06 - 9:07
    and/or leaving out some notes
  • 9:07 - 9:08
    adding in some extra things
  • 9:08 - 9:10
    It get's really good fun.
  • 9:10 - 9:12
16th note strumming is pretty cool,
    I'm thinking.
  • 9:12 - 9:16
    Most of the popy/rock stuff
    that you're gonna get
  • 9:16 - 9:18
is done with this 16th note style.
  • 9:18 - 9:20
    It even applies to picking
    and lead guitar later on,
  • 9:20 - 9:23
but let's not get ahead of us,
    I would say.
  • 9:23 - 9:27
So, that's your practise now is going through
    practising your 8th note strumming
  • 9:27 - 9:30
merging it into 16th note strumming
    with all downstrums
  • 9:30 - 9:34
and then adding in the proper 16ths
with the downs and the ups
  • 9:34 - 9:35
    with the metronome.
  • 9:35 - 9:36
    That's your work.
  • 9:36 - 9:39
Have fun with that and I'll see you
for another lesson sometimes real soon.
  • 9:39 - 9:41
Take care of yourself, bye bye!
