    Hello, RINA here.
  • 0:03 - 0:10
For today's video, I received a DM on Instagram that piqued my interest a bit,
  • 0:10 - 0:14
So I will talking a little about that.
  • 0:14 - 0:17
    First, I'll read the DM.
  • 0:17 - 0:22
"Hello! I'm a 21-year-old woman who's been a SCANDAL fan since middle school.
  • 0:23 - 0:25
I got your zine in the mail!
  • 0:25 - 0:28
I don't know if this DM will reach you,
  • 0:28 - 0:33
But I am sending this in hopes that my feelings can be of some help to you, RINA-chan.
  • 0:34 - 0:37
    I attend a women's university
  • 0:37 - 0:39
And am writing a graduation thesis with the theme,
  • 0:39 - 0:42
"Gender from the viewpoint of an all-girl band."
  • 0:42 - 0:45
I originally wasn't really interested in gender and the like,
  • 0:45 - 0:50
    And I'm attending a women's university because I had a connection there.
  • 0:50 - 0:59
Me being very interested in gender-related issues is in large due to the various media you continue to send out.
  • 0:59 - 1:03
Thank you very much for creating my four-year topic.
  • 1:03 - 1:12
The message your zine gives is not that men and women are equal (I hear a lot of this in my lectures).
  • 1:13 - 1:18
Your desire to proudly live your life as a woman is conveyed,
  • 1:18 - 1:25
And it feels like the discomfort I've been feeling while attending lectures has disappeared.
  • 1:26 - 1:30
I will be incorporating these feelings and assertions into my paper.
  • 1:30 - 1:34
I'm curious as how you, RINA-chan, became interested in gender-related issues,
  • 1:34 - 1:38
So I'd be happy if you talked about that on YouTube or the like.
  • 1:38 - 1:43
I also feel that a lot of gender-related info comes from you,
  • 1:43 - 1:46
But I'd like to hear if the members talk to each other about things like this,
  • 1:46 - 1:51
Or if you put those talks into your music.
  • 1:52 - 1:56
Please tell us about your gender-related stories.
  • 1:56 - 1:59
Also, I'd like for it to reach many women.
  • 1:59 - 2:03
(I'm really looking forward to the DAISY Project)
  • 2:03 - 2:06
    That's the DM I got.
  • 2:06 - 2:07
    Thank you so much.
  • 2:07 - 2:09
    This was mentioned,
  • 2:10 - 2:16
But I made a zine with the theme of "feminism" and "how women work."
  • 2:16 - 2:19
    It's already sold out,
  • 2:19 - 2:22
And I thank everyone who picked up a copy.
  • 2:22 - 2:24
    That made me happy.
  • 2:24 - 2:26
I got a lot of reactions,
  • 2:27 - 2:29
    And, um...
  • 2:30 - 2:32
    Getting back on topic,
  • 2:33 - 2:40
I became interested in gender-related issues due to two big reasons.
  • 2:40 - 2:45
First, the home environment in which I grew up,
  • 2:45 - 2:52
And what I felt as I was watching my mom navigate it all.
  • 2:53 - 2:57
Also, what I felt as I've been in the band.
  • 2:59 - 3:01
As we delved further into things,
  • 3:01 - 3:07
I think I became more interested in gender-related stuff.
  • 3:07 - 3:11
During the time I've been in an all-girl band,
  • 3:11 - 3:14
    Um...
  • 3:14 - 3:22
I tried recalling if I had thought about gender and feminism,
  • 3:22 - 3:25
And I will give a few simple examples.
  • 3:25 - 3:27
    This is the first one.
  • 3:27 - 3:32
I think this happened about five to six years ago.
  • 3:32 - 3:35
    When being interviewed,
  • 3:35 - 3:38
This was said to us as a compliment:
  • 3:38 - 3:42
    "You're not an 'all-girl band'—you're a 'band' band."
  • 3:42 - 3:46
I thought there was some kind of catch to it,
  • 3:46 - 3:51
Or rather, I was kind of like, "What?"
  • 3:51 - 3:56
We're a band to begin with,
  • 3:56 - 4:04
And I don't think that all-girl bands are below ones with guys in them,
  • 4:04 - 4:09
But it's like they were saying we ranked up.
  • 4:10 - 4:13
    I thought, "Huh?"
  • 4:13 - 4:17
I didn't really think too much about it then.
  • 4:17 - 4:21
Of course it wasn't something I got angry with,
  • 4:21 - 4:26
But it was something that stuck with me.
  • 4:27 - 4:29
    Now for the second example.
  • 4:30 - 4:34
A while ago there were very few all-girl bands compared to now,
  • 4:35 - 4:37
And even when we'd appear at events or festivals,
  • 4:37 - 4:41
We were constantly the only all-girl band, or the only female artist there.
  • 4:42 - 4:49
When there are 3-4 or more performers,
  • 4:49 - 4:54
Everyone's like, "Let's all make this event exciting!"
  • 4:55 - 5:01
So a lot of the time the bands mention each other during their MCs.
  • 5:01 - 5:06
When that happens and we're being talked about,
  • 5:08 - 5:11
    "SCANDAL's dressing room smelled great,"
  • 5:11 - 5:16
"When there are four girls, it really is great that there's so much beauty,"
  • 5:16 - 5:20
Are some of the things that are often said.
  • 5:22 - 5:26
We know that they don't mean any offense,
  • 5:26 - 5:28
But how can I put it...
  • 5:28 - 5:36
The way things like "It gets brighter when SCANDAL's here,"
  • 5:36 - 5:40
And "When there are four girls, it really is great that there's so much beauty," are said,
  • 5:40 - 5:43
They're similar but also a little different.
  • 5:45 - 5:46
    How can I put it?
  • 5:46 - 5:49
    For those events and festivals,
  • 5:49 - 5:56
We go out on stage with the same feelings as the other bands.
  • 5:56 - 5:58
    We're not just eye candy.
  • 5:58 - 6:03
There was a bit of a catch to those things [said about us].
  • 6:03 - 6:06
Another thing that happens a lot
  • 6:06 - 6:11
Occurs during taped events or live events for TV.
  • 6:13 - 6:17
When things are being transitioned and the MC comes out,
  • 6:17 - 6:20
They talk with the artist, and then the next performance happens.
  • 6:20 - 6:22
    That happens often.
  • 6:22 - 6:27
During a time when we finished our set and had the talk portion afterwards,
  • 6:27 - 6:29
"You were the only female artist,
  • 6:29 - 6:34
But you were energetic enough to not lose out to guy bands,"
  • 6:34 - 6:41
Is how the female MC summed it up
  • 6:42 - 6:46
    Unlike the previous story,
  • 6:46 - 6:50
I didn't get an unpleasant feeling from it,
  • 6:50 - 6:55
But music is not about battling to begin with.
  • 6:56 - 6:59
We're not doing this in order to win against someone.
  • 7:00 - 7:04
Each band has their own appeal,
  • 7:06 - 7:11
So I thought that that comparison wasn't something to be talking about in the first place.
  • 7:12 - 7:15
    I just gave three examples.
  • 7:15 - 7:21
I've felt all kinds of things as we've continued to be an all-girl band.
  • 7:22 - 7:27
I've been playing in this band since I was a middle schooler,
  • 7:27 - 7:31
    And as I've grown older,
  • 7:32 - 7:36
I've gained all sorts of knowledge and experience.
  • 7:36 - 7:42
I started to think that the feeling of strangeness I've had
  • 7:42 - 7:48
Has a lot to do with feminism.
  • 7:49 - 7:56
Knowing that what I've felt has a proper name to it,
  • 7:56 - 8:01
And knowing that there are many people worldwide turning that into actions,
  • 8:02 - 8:06
It feels like this fuzziness has cleared up a bit,
  • 8:06 - 8:10
And my heart feels a little lighter.
  • 8:10 - 8:11
    So,
  • 8:12 - 8:17
I thought it was very important to send forth what I've realized.
  • 8:18 - 8:23
    Information can lighten people's hearts.
  • 8:24 - 8:29
The same is true of the stories I told earlier.
  • 8:29 - 8:33
No one probably meant anything bad.
  • 8:33 - 8:35
    I truly understand that.
  • 8:35 - 8:44
It's better to update old ways of thinking as you live your ordinary daily lives,
  • 8:44 - 8:52
And I feel that this underlying thing is becoming more and more obsolete in this era.
  • 8:53 - 8:58
It'd be great if those who realize that will pass things on,
  • 8:58 - 9:05
And more and more people will be like, "Ah, that's right," and change themselves.
  • 9:06 - 9:15
I think it's important to raise issues in a way that everyone can enjoy.
  • 9:15 - 9:21
It's not that I've been feeling uncomfortable or angry about the causes.
  • 9:21 - 9:25
I just hope that the causes can be correctly identified,
  • 9:25 - 9:29
And that women lift up other women.
  • 9:30 - 9:32
    For men,
  • 9:33 - 9:37
I think there's a pressure that comes from the idea that men always have to be masculine and need to look good,
  • 9:37 - 9:43
And also that they should be a man that supports their spouse financially,
  • 9:44 - 9:55
For which they need to have a higher educational background.
  • 9:55 - 10:00
In that sense, it can be hard to live your life because you're a man.
  • 10:01 - 10:06
However, those "rules" don't actually exist,
  • 10:06 - 10:11
So I really wish that we could create a society where everyone can live comfortably
  • 10:11 - 10:17
By realizing that's something we cannot understand unless we think about it rationally.
  • 10:18 - 10:21
This was also in the DM I received,
  • 10:21 - 10:23
    And my way of thinking,
  • 10:24 - 10:33
It's not about living your life whether you're a man or woman, or if you're LGBTQ.
  • 10:33 - 10:37
It'd be great if we can have pride in ourselves
  • 10:37 - 10:39
While making sure to respect genders
  • 10:40 - 10:46
And ways of thinking that fit each of us well.
  • 10:49 - 10:53
I don't think it's that simple for everyone,
  • 10:53 - 11:05
But I think it's awesome when you find a way of living that suits you.
  • 11:05 - 11:07
    So,
  • 11:07 - 11:11
I want you to value each style.
  • 11:11 - 11:16
Lastly, about the "Do the members talk about this with each other?" question,
  • 11:17 - 11:19
    We do usually do so.
  • 11:19 - 11:24
Every Wednesday the four of us always go to the studio,
  • 11:25 - 11:29
And afterwards we and our staff have a meeting.
  • 11:30 - 11:36
We do this every week and talk about things then too.
  • 11:36 - 11:38
Of course our opinions can differ,
  • 11:39 - 11:42
And each of us have our own thoughts about gender.
  • 11:42 - 11:45
There also are differences in passion for it.
  • 11:45 - 11:47
It's really all over the place,
  • 11:47 - 11:50
    But I think that's fine.
  • 11:51 - 11:56
I value being able to regularly talk about things like that.
  • 11:56 - 12:04
So, what I'm talking about right now is how I personally think and communicate.
  • 12:04 - 12:07
I hope you can regard it in that way.
  • 12:08 - 12:12
I've been getting a lot of messages like this,
  • 12:13 - 12:16
And I feel that what I've been projecting little by little
  • 12:16 - 12:20
Is gradually starting to be conveyed.
  • 12:20 - 12:22
    That makes me very happy.
  • 12:22 - 12:27
I want everyone to live a comfortable life.
  • 12:27 - 12:31
I want to say, "I'm good with this."
