More Funk Chords (Guitar Lesson RH-024) How to Play

  • 0:10 - 0:36
    [Guitar funk music]
  • 0:36 - 0:38
Hi, how you doing? Justin here!
  • 0:38 - 0:41
This is now part four of my little series
  • 0:41 - 0:44
on funk guitar and today we are going to be
  • 0:44 - 0:47
looking at some more funk chords
  • 0:47 - 0:49
Some new voicings for dominant 7th chord
  • 0:49 - 0:51
that you might want to try using
  • 0:51 - 0:52
    in your funk play.
  • 0:52 - 0:54
Hopefully you've been through the other
  • 0:54 - 0:57
lessons already, cause these new chords are
  • 0:57 - 0:59
a little bit harder to use. Well actually they're
  • 0:59 - 1:01
not that much harder to use, but you'd be
  • 1:01 - 1:03
better off getting the basic chords down first.
  • 1:03 - 1:05
Go and check that out if you haven't already
  • 1:05 - 1:08
So, basically we're looking now at more
  • 1:08 - 1:11
    E-dominant chords. So in the
  • 1:11 - 1:13
    E-dominant chord family we have
  • 1:13 - 1:18
    E7, E9, E11, E13, and E7 sus 4.
  • 1:18 - 1:21
So what I'm going to do is show you some more
  • 1:21 - 1:23
cool funky little chord rifts that you might
  • 1:23 - 1:25
want to try out , so lets get to a closeup and
  • 1:25 - 1:28
I'll show you some of these cool new chords.
  • 1:28 - 1:31
K, the first chord that we're using here
  • 1:31 - 1:35
This is a little E7 cord. [strums guitar]
  • 1:35 - 1:37
and we're starting here with the first finger
  • 1:37 - 1:38
on the root note, which is the note E,
  • 1:38 - 1:40
second fret on the 4th string.
  • 1:40 - 1:45
    We're going 2nd fret, 4th fret, 3rd fret, 4th fret.
  • 1:45 - 1:48
    [strums guitar]
  • 1:48 - 1:49
Very funky cool little chord this one.
  • 1:50 - 1:53
Now another good chord within this sort of shape
  • 1:53 - 1:55
is moving this little finger forward one fret
  • 1:57 - 1:59
and you get an E7 sas 4
  • 1:59 - 2:07
    [plays guitar]
  • 2:07 - 2:08
    Very very cool little
  • 2:08 - 2:18
    [plays guitar]
  • 2:18 - 2:23
nice little grip those 2 little E7 sus 4 and regular E7.
  • 2:23 - 2:26
    and regular E7
  • 2:26 - 2:30
Now, we've already looked at E9
  • 2:30 - 2:31
a couple different variations of that
  • 2:32 - 2:34
E13, up here. So we've kind of
  • 2:34 - 2:36
got a few in this rough area.
  • 2:36 - 2:39
There's one that I really like [strums guitar]
  • 2:39 - 2:42
This is an E13 chord. It's got a D in the base
  • 2:42 - 2:44
It's got the flat 7 in the base there
  • 2:44 - 2:49
    So it's going 5, 6, 6, 5
  • 2:49 - 2:51
You have to be a bit careful with this because
  • 2:51 - 2:54
the lowest note, the base note is an E
  • 2:54 - 2:56
It can sound a bit weird so it's quite common
  • 2:56 - 3:01
to jump and go [strums guitar]
  • 3:01 - 3:03
E9 is the main chord and just jumpin off
  • 3:03 - 3:07
into this E13 chord. It does sound...
  • 3:07 - 3:10
It's a lovely sounding chord. Remember because
  • 3:10 - 3:12
we're in E, we can hit that low bass note there
  • 3:12 - 3:15
as well if we want. Very groovy little chord.
  • 3:15 - 3:17
[strums guitar] We've got those E9,
  • 3:17 - 3:19
E13 that we looked at before.
  • 3:19 - 3:21
The next one that I'm going to show you
  • 3:21 - 3:23
This is a very cool little chord [strums guitar]
  • 3:23 - 3:26
    It's kind of a bluesy 7th chord
  • 3:26 - 3:29
The root note is here on the 3rd string
  • 3:29 - 3:31
And we just go this is our study on
  • 3:31 - 3:34
    the 4th string we've got 9, 9, 9, 10
  • 3:35 - 3:40
    [plays guitar]
  • 3:40 - 3:42
Which of course works really well with
  • 3:42 - 3:43
we've got our E9 down here
  • 3:43 - 3:49
you can have like [plays guitar]
  • 3:49 - 3:51
Lots of nice little ways of incorporating this
  • 3:52 - 3:53
    little 7th chord in
  • 3:55 - 3:58
Now of course we've got these
  • 3:58 - 3:59
other 2 little chord voicings up here
  • 3:59 - 4:01
These are a little bit awkward for some
  • 4:01 - 4:03
people to get to but they're not that hard
  • 4:03 - 4:05
Just takes a little bit of getting your fingers
  • 4:05 - 4:07
    used to playing them
  • 4:07 - 4:08
What we've got here is standing on the
  • 4:08 - 4:10
4th string here with the 3rd finger
  • 4:10 - 4:15
    we've got 12th fret, 11th fret, 9th fret, 12th fret
  • 4:15 - 4:18
    [strums guitar]
  • 4:18 - 4:20
Very very nice little grip this one
  • 4:21 - 4:23
    and that's a 9th chord that's an E9
  • 4:24 - 4:25
Now you can also move the first
  • 4:25 - 4:28
finger forward and you've kind of got
  • 4:28 - 4:30
    E9 sus or E11
  • 4:30 - 4:33
    [strums guitar]
  • 4:33 - 4:35
    So E9, E11
  • 4:35 - 4:37
and again just to tie into the other ones
  • 4:37 - 4:38
    If you down here
  • 4:38 - 4:49
    [plays guitar]
  • 4:49 - 4:51
Lots of different ways that you can start to
  • 4:51 - 4:52
    muck around with using this
  • 4:52 - 4:58
    E11, E9, E7, E13
  • 4:58 - 5:00
Now actually I'll explain this one seperately
  • 5:00 - 5:03
So in the last lesson we looked at E9
  • 5:03 - 5:07
as being played like this or like this
  • 5:07 - 5:09
Now another really common way of playing
  • 5:09 - 5:10
it is just like this without the base notes
  • 5:10 - 5:13
So the root note is here
  • 5:13 - 5:15
just as we normally play it like that
  • 5:15 - 5:17
But you can leave that out as well
  • 5:17 - 5:18
and that can be quite funky
  • 5:18 - 5:21
and also sometimes use your second finger
  • 5:21 - 5:22
    instead of your third finger
  • 5:22 - 5:25
Which makes it easier to get that little
  • 5:25 - 5:27
13th hold that way you can hit the low
  • 5:27 - 5:29
E base not in the key of E but you
  • 5:29 - 5:30
    couldn't in other keys
  • 5:30 - 5:33
You can now use this to get chord scales
  • 5:34 - 5:37
For example, playing we're going up the
  • 5:37 - 5:39
mixalidian mode on the thinner string
  • 5:39 - 5:42
    going [plays chord]
  • 5:43 - 5:55
    Which would be E7, E11, E9, E13, E7, E9*
  • 5:57 - 6:00
and using that you can create little melodies
  • 6:00 - 6:24
    [plays guitar]
  • 6:25 - 6:27
Like I just showed you at the end there
  • 6:27 - 6:28
There are infinite number of ways of
  • 6:28 - 6:30
    putting these chords together
  • 6:30 - 6:31
    It's just something that's improvised
  • 6:31 - 6:33
and you can learn set patterns and in
  • 6:33 - 6:34
fact in the next lesson I'm gonna show you
  • 6:34 - 6:37
a few more set grooves that i think kind of
  • 6:37 - 6:39
work well. But a really big part of playing
  • 6:39 - 6:41
in this style is you experimenting with how
  • 6:41 - 6:43
    you put those chords together
  • 6:43 - 6:44
    Experimenting with the rhythms we've
  • 6:44 - 6:47
covered already and then just mucking
  • 6:47 - 6:49
around with changing between the different
  • 6:49 - 6:51
chords and seeing what ways you can try
  • 6:51 - 6:52
    and put them together
  • 6:52 - 6:54
It's lost of fun and it means as well as a
  • 6:54 - 6:57
lot of fun tunes, not just 1 chord for ages
  • 6:57 - 6:59
If you got a lot of the James Brown songs
  • 6:59 - 7:02
1 chord like E9 safe for the whole song
  • 7:02 - 7:03
So if you've got a whole bunch of
  • 7:03 - 7:05
different chords that you can use
  • 7:05 - 7:07
It really opens up what you can play
  • 7:07 - 7:10
Now in the little kind of demo I did
  • 7:10 - 7:13
a minute ago or whatever, I was using
  • 7:13 - 7:14
loads and loads of different chords
  • 7:14 - 7:16
And you probably wouldn't want to do that
  • 7:16 - 7:18
Because it just sounds a bit silly
  • 7:18 - 7:20
It's too much, you don't need to use
  • 7:20 - 7:22
so many colors all at the same time
  • 7:22 - 7:24
It ends up just sounding messy
  • 7:24 - 7:25
You're better off picking just a few
  • 7:25 - 7:27
different chords and putting them together
  • 7:27 - 7:29
in a group. Not tryna show off how
  • 7:29 - 7:30
    many chords you know
  • 7:30 - 7:32
I was just tryna give you a bit of a look
  • 7:32 - 7:34
into see some of the different ways
  • 7:34 - 7:35
that you could use those chords
  • 7:36 - 7:37
Check out those chords, get them
  • 7:37 - 7:39
under your fingers and then when
  • 7:39 - 7:40
you feel up for it join me
  • 7:40 - 7:41
for the next part where we'll
  • 7:41 - 7:43
look at some more proper funk grooves
  • 7:43 - 7:45
See ya soon, take care, bye bye
