The Ethics of Looking And The "Harmless" Peeping Tom
-
0:07 - 0:09It’s often said that cinema,
-
0:09 - 0:13by it's very nature, is voyeuristic,
-
0:13 - 0:17because film offers the audience a window
-
0:17 - 0:21into the hidden lives of others.
-
0:21 - 0:23Watching people’s stories on the big
-
0:23 - 0:26and small screen can indeed be
-
0:26 - 0:28fascinating and exhilarating.
-
0:30 - 0:33But the act of looking can also feel
-
0:33 - 0:38uncomfortable, invasive, even violating.
-
0:40 - 0:42Underpinning these uncomfortable moments
-
0:43 - 0:45we can find some alarming messages
-
0:45 - 0:49about the role of consent.
-
0:49 - 0:51To explain, let’s start here
-
0:52 - 0:55in the normal bedroom of a normal boy
-
0:55 - 0:59doing normal boy stuff.
-
0:59 - 1:00Normal stuff
-
1:00 - 1:03like spying on the girl next door.
-
1:04 - 1:06Popular culture is filled
-
1:06 - 1:08with scenes like this one
-
1:10 - 1:12Scenes in which one character,
-
1:12 - 1:13usually a man
-
1:13 - 1:15spies on another character,
-
1:15 - 1:16usually a woman
-
1:16 - 1:19without that person’s knowledge or consent
-
1:21 - 1:23To be clear, we're talking about secret
-
1:23 - 1:25surveillance of a person
-
1:25 - 1:27while they're alone
-
1:27 - 1:29in various states of undress
-
1:29 - 1:31or engaged in sexual activity.
-
1:33 - 1:34This is invasive looking
-
1:34 - 1:36that violates a person's
-
1:36 - 1:38reasonable expectation of privacy.
-
1:40 - 1:41In a staggering number of movies
-
1:41 - 1:44and tv shows, this type of spying
-
1:44 - 1:46isn't done by the villain.
-
1:47 - 1:49It is instead perpetrated
-
1:49 - 1:50by "nice guy" characters.
-
1:50 - 1:52"Slow down, baby"
-
1:53 - 1:55These are straight men, who are otherwise
-
1:55 - 1:56presented as decent.
-
1:57 - 1:58Or, at the very least,
-
1:59 - 2:00mostly harmless.
-
2:00 - 2:02"Hey! Hey!"
-
2:04 - 2:06This media patern is so prevasive,
-
2:06 - 2:08I thought it needed a name.
-
2:09 - 2:10"He's a peeping Tom!"
-
2:11 - 2:13So I call it "The harmless peeping Tom".
-
2:14 - 2:15"You know, it occurs to me,
-
2:15 - 2:17that you can see right into Donna's house
-
2:17 - 2:18from my driveway."
-
2:18 - 2:19"You don't say"
-
2:19 - 2:20(off-screen laughter)
-
2:20 - 2:22All of the boys on "That 70s Show"
-
2:22 - 2:25for instance, casually participate
-
2:25 - 2:26in spying behavior.
-
2:26 - 2:28"No, Anette! Not the robe!"
-
2:28 - 2:30(off-screen laughter)
