Live the soundtrack of your life | Saskia Rudolph | TEDxLinz
-
0:18 - 0:24In our modern world, everyone
is always looking for the next big thing: -
0:25 - 0:29the key to success, health,
happiness, and well-being. -
0:29 - 0:36New methods, solutions, insights,
facts and figures pop up everywhere -
0:36 - 0:42in this sheer endless search
for "The Perfect Life." -
0:43 - 0:45This is my grandma
-
0:46 - 0:51on her motorbike in Italy in 1956,
-
0:52 - 0:57not knowing that this would be
one of the last trips she would take -
0:57 - 1:00for a very, very long time.
-
1:01 - 1:04When the Wall was built in 1961,
-
1:04 - 1:09it divided Germany,
the country she grew up in, -
1:09 - 1:11and ended her freedom.
-
1:12 - 1:18But she never stopped hoping, dreaming,
and believing in a better future. -
1:19 - 1:23In 1989, four years after I was born,
-
1:23 - 1:26suddenly the wall was history.
-
1:27 - 1:31My grandparents put my sister and me
-
1:31 - 1:36into their tiny little, GDR,
East German, Trabant car, -
1:36 - 1:42and finally took us to all the different
places they had been longing to visit -
1:42 - 1:45and missing for such a long time.
-
1:46 - 1:50We slept in this car;
there were four of us. -
1:50 - 1:51(Laughter)
-
1:51 - 1:56When we got taller, we moved
into a tiny little tent next to it. -
1:57 - 2:00We even slept in a cow stable.
-
2:00 - 2:05We didn't have any money,
but we were finally free, -
2:05 - 2:08and that's what really mattered.
-
2:09 - 2:13As a cultural scientist and psychologist,
-
2:13 - 2:16I guess I know almost everything
there is to know -
2:16 - 2:19about the science
of happiness and well-being. -
2:20 - 2:22All the facts and figures,
-
2:22 - 2:24all the studies.
-
2:25 - 2:32I know that 50 percent of your happiness
is determined by your genes, -
2:32 - 2:34so you cannot do anything about it;
-
2:35 - 2:41another 10 percent by circumstances
you cannot change or influence, -
2:41 - 2:44as good or bad as they might be;
-
2:44 - 2:48but the remaining 40 percent -
-
2:48 - 2:50and that's what really counts -
-
2:50 - 2:53are influenced by yourself,
-
2:53 - 2:59by your internal state of mind,
your actions, thoughts, and behaviour. -
3:00 - 3:02So in my case,
-
3:02 - 3:06my childhood experiences, our adventures,
-
3:06 - 3:09and not the least, my grandma's words
-
3:09 - 3:15told me more about happiness
than anything or anyone else ever did. -
3:15 - 3:19Because, in the end,
it's not about science; -
3:19 - 3:23it's not about brain structures
or chemical reactions. -
3:23 - 3:30In the end, it's all about how you fill
this mix-tape called your life. -
3:30 - 3:35So, imagine your life was a tape recorder.
-
3:35 - 3:37Sometimes,
-
3:37 - 3:39one or the other button might get stuck.
-
3:39 - 3:43Sometimes, the tape
gets tangled in the small cogs. -
3:43 - 3:49But most of the time, it is running:
the soundtrack of your life. -
3:49 - 3:53When do you push which button?
-
3:53 - 3:59"Play" is all about the many different
reasons you get up in the morning. -
3:59 - 4:01It's about motivation.
-
4:01 - 4:05It's about getting started
or getting started ahead. -
4:05 - 4:10And it's about what you love.
-
4:10 - 4:17And it's about the best state
your mind and body can possibly be in. -
4:18 - 4:24When time rushes and everything
seems perfectly under control, -
4:24 - 4:27this state is called "flow."
-
4:27 - 4:29So think about,
-
4:29 - 4:35When was the last time
you were so motivated and so focused -
4:35 - 4:40that nothing else played a role anymore,
and time just went by? -
4:41 - 4:43Once we've started moving,
-
4:44 - 4:48there's one thing
we sometimes tend to forget -
4:48 - 4:51and might end up being totally stressed.
-
4:52 - 4:55It's my favourite button;
it's the "Pause" button. -
4:55 - 4:59Because sometimes
I myself forget to press it. -
5:00 - 5:07The Pause button is about finding time
to calm down and to rest. -
5:07 - 5:10It's about mindfulness,
-
5:10 - 5:15and it's about being exactly here and now
-
5:15 - 5:16and nowhere else.
-
5:17 - 5:22And it's about taking a deep breath,
-
5:23 - 5:27here and now.
-
5:29 - 5:32And while you're breathing,
-
5:32 - 5:36I want you to skip back
-
5:36 - 5:43to all the moments and memories
you've had so far in your life. -
5:43 - 5:47I want you to remember them
because they mattered so much. -
5:47 - 5:51Skip back to all the places
you've already been to, -
5:51 - 5:54to all the wonderful things
you've already done, -
5:54 - 5:59and to all the good things
you've already learned, -
5:59 - 6:03because I think there's
so much to remember. -
6:04 - 6:06And while you're there,
-
6:08 - 6:09skipping back,
-
6:09 - 6:13also think about everyone
you've met along the way. -
6:13 - 6:15So many people.
-
6:16 - 6:17There's a saying that says
-
6:17 - 6:22that you become like the five people
you spend most time with. -
6:22 - 6:29So choose wisely whose voices
and actions you would like to record. -
6:29 - 6:33Whose words do you never,
ever want to forget? -
6:34 - 6:41Who mattered so much that you want to
have them in your life on a regular basis? -
6:41 - 6:45Think about the people who really count,
-
6:45 - 6:48and get in touch with them -
-
6:48 - 6:49today, tomorrow,
-
6:49 - 6:53and every single day that follows.
-
6:53 - 6:57Play, Pause, Rewind, Record.
-
6:58 - 7:04Last but not least, there's one button
that takes a look into your future. -
7:04 - 7:07"Skip Forward" to the unknown,
-
7:07 - 7:10and look what the future might bring.
-
7:12 - 7:17What would you do
if you knew you could not fail? -
7:17 - 7:18And,
-
7:19 - 7:26when was the last time you did something
for the very, very first time? -
7:27 - 7:29You are in charge.
-
7:29 - 7:32Mix your mix-tape the way you want it.
-
7:32 - 7:34Listen to the sound of your life.
-
7:34 - 7:41Skip Back and Forward,
Record, Play, and Pause. -
7:41 - 7:43Live your life,
-
7:43 - 7:49because as far as I know,
there's only one life you've got. -
7:51 - 7:55My grandma's soundtrack
-
7:55 - 8:02is one of the most colourful, loveliest,
and inspiring ones I have ever known. -
8:03 - 8:06I often wish it would still be playing,
-
8:06 - 8:11and in a way, I think it always will be.
-
8:11 - 8:14So, why am I telling you this?
-
8:15 - 8:22I want you to go to these five buttons
on your tape recorder as a daily routine. -
8:22 - 8:29I want you to use them all;
don't only play one of them all the time. -
8:30 - 8:31Use them all.
-
8:32 - 8:36Implement them
into the fabric of your life -
8:36 - 8:40because every mix-tape
tells another story. -
8:41 - 8:45Let yours be unique, authentic,
-
8:45 - 8:49full of love, laughter, and learnings.
-
8:49 - 8:52Let it be a daily inspiration
-
8:52 - 8:57for yourself and for the people
you love the most. -
8:58 - 8:59Thank you.
-
8:59 - 9:02(Applause)
