Live the soundtrack of your life | Saskia Rudolph | TEDxLinz

  • 0:18 - 0:24
    In our modern world, everyone
is always looking for the next big thing:
  • 0:25 - 0:29
    the key to success, health,
    happiness, and well-being.
  • 0:29 - 0:36
    New methods, solutions, insights,
facts and figures pop up everywhere
  • 0:36 - 0:42
    in this sheer endless search
    for "The Perfect Life."
  • 0:43 - 0:45
    This is my grandma
  • 0:46 - 0:51
on her motorbike in Italy in 1956,
  • 0:52 - 0:57
not knowing that this would be
one of the last trips she would take
  • 0:57 - 1:00
for a very, very long time.
  • 1:01 - 1:04
When the Wall was built in 1961,
  • 1:04 - 1:09
    it divided Germany,
the country she grew up in,
  • 1:09 - 1:11
    and ended her freedom.
  • 1:12 - 1:18
But she never stopped hoping, dreaming,
and believing in a better future.
  • 1:19 - 1:23
In 1989, four years after I was born,
  • 1:23 - 1:26
    suddenly the wall was history.
  • 1:27 - 1:31
My grandparents put my sister and me
  • 1:31 - 1:36
    into their tiny little, GDR,
    East German, Trabant car,
  • 1:36 - 1:42
and finally took us to all the different
places they had been longing to visit
  • 1:42 - 1:45
and missing for such a long time.
  • 1:46 - 1:50
    We slept in this car;
    there were four of us.
  • 1:50 - 1:51
    (Laughter)
  • 1:51 - 1:56
When we got taller, we moved
into a tiny little tent next to it.
  • 1:57 - 2:00
We even slept in a cow stable.
  • 2:00 - 2:05
    We didn't have any money,
    but we were finally free,
  • 2:05 - 2:08
    and that's what really mattered.
  • 2:09 - 2:13
As a cultural scientist and psychologist,
  • 2:13 - 2:16
I guess I know almost everything
    there is to know
  • 2:16 - 2:19
    about the science
    of happiness and well-being.
  • 2:20 - 2:22
    All the facts and figures,
  • 2:22 - 2:24
    all the studies.
  • 2:25 - 2:32
I know that 50 percent of your happiness
    is determined by your genes,
  • 2:32 - 2:34
    so you cannot do anything about it;
  • 2:35 - 2:41
    another 10 percent by circumstances
    you cannot change or influence,
  • 2:41 - 2:44
    as good or bad as they might be;
  • 2:44 - 2:48
but the remaining 40 percent -
  • 2:48 - 2:50
and that's what really counts -
  • 2:50 - 2:53
    are influenced by yourself,
  • 2:53 - 2:59
by your internal state of mind,
    your actions, thoughts, and behaviour.
  • 3:00 - 3:02
    So in my case,
  • 3:02 - 3:06
    my childhood experiences, our adventures,
  • 3:06 - 3:09
and not the least, my grandma's words
  • 3:09 - 3:15
    told me more about happiness
than anything or anyone else ever did.
  • 3:15 - 3:19
    Because, in the end,
    it's not about science;
  • 3:19 - 3:23
    it's not about brain structures
    or chemical reactions.
  • 3:23 - 3:30
In the end, it's all about how you fill
    this mix-tape called your life.
  • 3:30 - 3:35
So, imagine your life was a tape recorder.
  • 3:35 - 3:37
    Sometimes,
  • 3:37 - 3:39
one or the other button might get stuck.
  • 3:39 - 3:43
    Sometimes, the tape
gets tangled in the small cogs.
  • 3:43 - 3:49
But most of the time, it is running:
    the soundtrack of your life.
  • 3:49 - 3:53
When do you push which button?
  • 3:53 - 3:59
"Play" is all about the many different
reasons you get up in the morning.
  • 3:59 - 4:01
    It's about motivation.
  • 4:01 - 4:05
    It's about getting started
    or getting started ahead.
  • 4:05 - 4:10
And it's about what you love.
  • 4:10 - 4:17
And it's about the best state
your mind and body can possibly be in.
  • 4:18 - 4:24
    When time rushes and everything
    seems perfectly under control,
  • 4:24 - 4:27
    this state is called "flow."
  • 4:27 - 4:29
    So think about,
  • 4:29 - 4:35
    When was the last time
you were so motivated and so focused
  • 4:35 - 4:40
that nothing else played a role anymore,
    and time just went by?
  • 4:41 - 4:43
    Once we've started moving,
  • 4:44 - 4:48
    there's one thing
    we sometimes tend to forget
  • 4:48 - 4:51
and might end up being totally stressed.
  • 4:52 - 4:55
    It's my favourite button;
    it's the "Pause" button.
  • 4:55 - 4:59
    Because sometimes
I myself forget to press it.
  • 5:00 - 5:07
The Pause button is about finding time
to calm down and to rest.
  • 5:07 - 5:10
    It's about mindfulness,
  • 5:10 - 5:15
and it's about being exactly here and now
  • 5:15 - 5:16
    and nowhere else.
  • 5:17 - 5:22
And it's about taking a deep breath,
  • 5:23 - 5:27
    here and now.
  • 5:29 - 5:32
    And while you're breathing,
  • 5:32 - 5:36
I want you to skip back
  • 5:36 - 5:43
to all the moments and memories
you've had so far in your life.
  • 5:43 - 5:47
I want you to remember them
    because they mattered so much.
  • 5:47 - 5:51
Skip back to all the places
    you've already been to,
  • 5:51 - 5:54
    to all the wonderful things
    you've already done,
  • 5:54 - 5:59
and to all the good things
    you've already learned,
  • 5:59 - 6:03
    because I think there's
    so much to remember.
  • 6:04 - 6:06
    And while you're there,
  • 6:08 - 6:09
    skipping back,
  • 6:09 - 6:13
    also think about everyone
    you've met along the way.
  • 6:13 - 6:15
    So many people.
  • 6:16 - 6:17
    There's a saying that says
  • 6:17 - 6:22
that you become like the five people
    you spend most time with.
  • 6:22 - 6:29
    So choose wisely whose voices
and actions you would like to record.
  • 6:29 - 6:33
    Whose words do you never,
    ever want to forget?
  • 6:34 - 6:41
Who mattered so much that you want to
have them in your life on a regular basis?
  • 6:41 - 6:45
Think about the people who really count,
  • 6:45 - 6:48
and get in touch with them -
  • 6:48 - 6:49
    today, tomorrow,
  • 6:49 - 6:53
and every single day that follows.
  • 6:53 - 6:57
    Play, Pause, Rewind, Record.
  • 6:58 - 7:04
Last but not least, there's one button
that takes a look into your future.
  • 7:04 - 7:07
    "Skip Forward" to the unknown,
  • 7:07 - 7:10
and look what the future might bring.
  • 7:12 - 7:17
    What would you do
if you knew you could not fail?
  • 7:17 - 7:18
    And,
  • 7:19 - 7:26
when was the last time you did something
for the very, very first time?
  • 7:27 - 7:29
    You are in charge.
  • 7:29 - 7:32
Mix your mix-tape the way you want it.
  • 7:32 - 7:34
Listen to the sound of your life.
  • 7:34 - 7:41
    Skip Back and Forward,
    Record, Play, and Pause.
  • 7:41 - 7:43
    Live your life,
  • 7:43 - 7:49
because as far as I know,
there's only one life you've got.
  • 7:51 - 7:55
    My grandma's soundtrack
  • 7:55 - 8:02
is one of the most colourful, loveliest,
and inspiring ones I have ever known.
  • 8:03 - 8:06
I often wish it would still be playing,
  • 8:06 - 8:11
and in a way, I think it always will be.
  • 8:11 - 8:14
So, why am I telling you this?
  • 8:15 - 8:22
I want you to go to these five buttons
on your tape recorder as a daily routine.
  • 8:22 - 8:29
    I want you to use them all;
don't only play one of them all the time.
  • 8:30 - 8:31
    Use them all.
  • 8:32 - 8:36
    Implement them
into the fabric of your life
  • 8:36 - 8:40
    because every mix-tape
    tells another story.
  • 8:41 - 8:45
    Let yours be unique, authentic,
  • 8:45 - 8:49
full of love, laughter, and learnings.
  • 8:49 - 8:52
Let it be a daily inspiration
  • 8:52 - 8:57
for yourself and for the people
    you love the most.
  • 8:58 - 8:59
    Thank you.
  • 8:59 - 9:02
    (Applause)
