Crossing Your Inner Borders - Anwar Dafa-Alla at TEDxBerlin
-
0:04 - 0:07[Crossing Borders]
-
0:07 - 0:09Thank you so much.
-
0:09 - 0:11I love you all.
-
0:11 - 0:13Thank you.
-
0:13 - 0:19(Applause)
-
0:19 - 0:23So, I'm from Sudan.
-
0:23 - 0:26And what you see behind me
-
0:26 - 0:31are typical pictures that you'll find
whenever you search Google. -
0:31 - 0:36You put in "Sudan,"
you will find these kind of images. -
0:37 - 0:42This is Sudan as perceived in the media.
-
0:42 - 0:45This is Sudan that I'm developing.
-
0:45 - 0:49The communities of intellect in action.
-
0:49 - 0:52People, where they gather,
-
0:52 - 0:59they will change the situation
from point A to point B. -
0:59 - 1:02In Sudan, we have a couple of borders
-
1:02 - 1:06that we should cross as soon as possible.
-
1:06 - 1:12Just to reach out
where the future is heading to. -
1:12 - 1:15We have borders in education.
-
1:15 - 1:19We have high illiteracy.
-
1:19 - 1:24We have a problem
with access to information. -
1:24 - 1:27We have a problem with languages.
-
1:27 - 1:32We have over 70 languages in Sudan.
-
1:32 - 1:33I mean it!
-
1:33 - 1:3970 languages, not to mention the dialects.
-
1:40 - 1:48Arabic happens to be the dominant
and the official language in Sudan. -
1:48 - 1:51So people communicate in Arabic,
-
1:51 - 1:59even in Southern Sudan,
the new-formed country, -
1:59 - 2:03there is a version of Arabic
called Arabic Juba. -
2:03 - 2:10The Southern tribes communicate
with each other using this language -
2:10 - 2:13the Arabic Juba.
-
2:13 - 2:17Well, I'm an educator, myself.
-
2:17 - 2:20I'm passionate about education,
-
2:20 - 2:23and I know how important it is
-
2:23 - 2:26for the development of any nation,
-
2:26 - 2:29and how crucial it is to have education
-
2:29 - 2:34at the center of the development.
-
2:34 - 2:37In 2009, I was in South Korea,
-
2:37 - 2:41and yes, this is Korean,
Chungbuk Daehakgyo. -
2:41 - 2:45I was doing my Ph.D. in Computer Science.
-
2:45 - 2:50And we had a kind of culture of sharing
-
2:50 - 2:54anything that came into our hands.
-
2:54 - 2:57I throw a video to a friend of mine,
-
2:57 - 3:00he throws me a link and so on.
-
3:00 - 3:02And one day...
-
3:02 - 3:05We were focusing on data mining
-
3:05 - 3:07and multidisciplinary research,
and so on. -
3:07 - 3:10One day Ibrahim Musa,
-
3:10 - 3:13who was doing his Master's
back then in South Korea, -
3:13 - 3:19he sent me a link to this talk.
-
3:19 - 3:22It was from YouTube back then.
-
3:22 - 3:27"How stats fool juries."
-
3:27 - 3:30It was so interesting for me.
-
3:30 - 3:33I'm a researcher.
-
3:33 - 3:36And I do a lot of presentations.
-
3:36 - 3:40You know the academic presentations,
how it looks. -
3:40 - 3:42It's so dull!
-
3:42 - 3:43Right? It's boring.
-
3:43 - 3:46(Laughter)
-
3:46 - 3:49But now, there's a piece of content
about statistics -
3:49 - 3:52and there is an element of storytelling.
-
3:52 - 3:56It was so interesting for me!
-
3:56 - 4:00So the neurons of research just went --
-
4:00 - 4:02(Explosion sound)
-
4:02 - 4:06I needed to know
where this video came from. -
4:06 - 4:11So, I went to TED.com, the website.
-
4:11 - 4:19And one of the links said
there is an Open Translation Project. -
4:19 - 4:21Because of that video,
-
4:21 - 4:25what came to my inner self,
-
4:25 - 4:29[was that] this video and this content
should be shared -
4:29 - 4:31with my friends,
-
4:31 - 4:34my research collaborators,
-
4:34 - 4:38my colleagues, my friends,
-
4:38 - 4:41my brothers, my sisters,
-
4:41 - 4:44my nation.
-
4:44 - 4:46So, how can I do that?
-
4:46 - 4:49And then I found this
Open Translation Project, -
4:49 - 4:53where I can use the subtitles,
translate them into Arabic, -
4:53 - 4:58and give it for free
to my friends, as a gift, -
4:58 - 5:02to my daughter,
as a security for her future, -
5:02 - 5:06to thank the speaker himself or herself,
-
5:06 - 5:10who gave it for free.
-
5:10 - 5:13And since June 2009,
-
5:13 - 5:16I've been through a wonderful journey,
-
5:16 - 5:23diving deeply
inside all sorts of sciences. -
5:23 - 5:26From space into the deep blue seas,
-
5:26 - 5:31from the kindergarten
into the professorship. -
5:31 - 5:35All sorts of stories.
-
5:35 - 5:38It was wonderful.
-
5:38 - 5:43It is and it will continue
as a wonderful story. -
5:43 - 5:46I've met fascinating people,
-
5:46 - 5:49amazing people, extraordinary people,
-
5:49 - 5:52through this Open Translation Project.
-
5:52 - 5:55We had different workshops here and there.
-
5:55 - 5:57We discuss how we can improve this,
-
5:57 - 6:00how we take the Project from here
-
6:00 - 6:02to another level.
-
6:02 - 6:04We've met a couple of times,
-
6:04 - 6:07two times in the United States,
two times in the United Kingdom. -
6:07 - 6:13And we're always on Facebook together.
-
6:16 - 6:17Yes.
-
6:18 - 6:19Yes.
-
6:20 - 6:24I'm one of the most active
volunteer translators at TED. -
6:25 - 6:29And yes, I spent more
than two years of working hours. -
6:29 - 6:38(Applause)
-
6:38 - 6:40I do this
-
6:40 - 6:44because it's crossing borders
by its nature. -
6:44 - 6:47We are crossing the border
of the language, -
6:47 - 6:50the border of the ideas,
-
6:50 - 6:52the border of the nationality,
-
6:52 - 6:55the border of the religions.
-
6:55 - 6:58Whatever border it is.
-
6:58 - 7:00Two years of working hours.
-
7:00 - 7:03Frankly speaking, I didn't count it.
-
7:03 - 7:05My friend did the math.
-
7:05 - 7:07(Laughter)
-
7:07 - 7:10She said, "OK, you have two years
of translating TEDTalks." -
7:10 - 7:13I said, "OK, it was worth doing."
-
7:13 - 7:17But it wasn't only about that.
-
7:17 - 7:22It wasn't only about translating
and crossing borders. -
7:22 - 7:28There is an extra mile here.
-
7:30 - 7:34I translated the talk of JD Schramm.
-
7:34 - 7:40He was talking about
preventing the second [suicide attempt]. -
7:42 - 7:45So the talk is really wonderful.
-
7:45 - 7:48The idea of saving lives.
-
7:48 - 7:51You committed suicide once,
you are saved. -
7:51 - 7:54You will commit it again.
-
7:54 - 8:00So how to prevent this
is really a great notion, right? -
8:03 - 8:07Then, I went to the TEDActive conference.
-
8:07 - 8:11And I saw him speaking on the stage.
-
8:11 - 8:15Live, just like me now, in front of you.
-
8:15 - 8:18And while he was speaking he said,
-
8:18 - 8:23"Me and my husband were --"
-
8:24 - 8:27I looked at my friend,
a fellow translator and said, -
8:27 - 8:30"Did he say 'my husband'?"
-
8:30 - 8:32(Laughter)
-
8:32 - 8:34He said yes.
-
8:34 - 8:38"He's gay."
-
8:38 - 8:44At that point,
I had a conflict of emotions. -
8:44 - 8:47Because of my social upbringing,
-
8:47 - 8:52Muslim, being raised
and growing up in Sudan, -
8:52 - 8:57I know there are gays,
I know there is homosexuality. -
8:57 - 8:59But this was the first time for me
-
8:59 - 9:03to see someone openly say "I am a gay,"
-
9:03 - 9:05and "my husband",
-
9:05 - 9:09and I was involved
in translating his TEDTalk. -
9:09 - 9:13(Laughter)
-
9:13 - 9:20(Applause)
-
9:24 - 9:26It was a time of conflict for me.
-
9:26 - 9:30It's not crossing the borders
of the language and the barriers. -
9:30 - 9:33It's now about crossing my inner borders.
-
9:33 - 9:36My beliefs...
-
9:36 - 9:39My cultural upbringing...
-
9:39 - 9:42Shall I say this to my friend?
-
9:42 - 9:46Shall I share this with those
who consume the talks, -
9:46 - 9:49the Arabic-speaking world?
-
9:49 - 9:55There are 300 million
speaking the Arabic language. -
9:55 - 10:00TED celebrated 1 billion views of TEDTalks.
-
10:00 - 10:05A big bite of this consumption
-
10:05 - 10:07was from the Arabic-speaking countries.
-
10:07 - 10:09I'm so proud of this.
-
10:09 - 10:14But shall I share this with my community?
-
10:14 - 10:17There's another issue here.
-
10:17 - 10:20It's not about "he's an atheist",
-
10:20 - 10:23or Jewish, or Christian.
-
10:23 - 10:26I translated all sorts of speakers' talks.
-
10:26 - 10:29It's about being gay in my culture,
-
10:29 - 10:36how my culture is perceiving
this specific notion. -
10:36 - 10:40But there must be a border crossing here.
-
10:40 - 10:42Right?
-
10:42 - 10:46The talk that I translated
is still the same. -
10:46 - 10:50The idea I've translated is still the same.
-
10:50 - 10:55The only thing that changed
was my perception. -
10:55 - 10:56Right?
-
10:56 - 10:58Right?
-
10:58 - 10:59So what?
-
10:59 - 11:01(Laughter)
-
11:01 - 11:03So what?
-
11:03 - 11:05So what?
-
11:05 - 11:08I needed to cross my inner border.
-
11:08 - 11:12I needed to share this with the community.
-
11:12 - 11:13With everyone.
-
11:13 - 11:17To cross my inner border.
-
11:17 - 11:20The idea was still the same.
-
11:20 - 11:22The lesson?
-
11:22 - 11:28What is the lesson
that I got from this experience? -
11:28 - 11:32It's not about how many translations
I have published, -
11:32 - 11:38rather it's how I understood
the essence of what I do. -
11:38 - 11:40And the essence of what I do?
-
11:40 - 11:41I translate ideas.
-
11:41 - 11:44I spread knowledge.
-
11:44 - 11:47I'm not personalizing stuff.
-
11:47 - 11:50So I crossed my inner border.
-
11:50 - 11:53I crossed my inner border.
-
11:54 - 11:56Would you?
-
11:56 - 11:59Would you?
-
11:59 - 12:01Would you?
-
12:01 - 12:03Would you?
-
12:03 - 12:04Thank you.
-
12:04 - 12:07(Applause)
- Title:
- Crossing Your Inner Borders - Anwar Dafa-Alla at TEDxBerlin
- Description:
-
What limits and borders are we faced with as individuals, as a society? Who or what defines these boundaries? What are the results of these barriers that may even result in scientific or artistic limitations to us as individuals and to the society as a whole? Are they arbitrarily defined or are they imposed due to their necessity? Are they obstacles or are they beneficial? What happens if we overcome these borders?
