February 1 - Flowing to Unwatered Lands
-
0:09 - 0:12The Seventh-day Adventist Church
is known around the world -
0:12 - 0:13for its mission outreach.
-
0:14 - 0:17And your mission offerings
are the workhorse of these efforts. -
0:17 - 0:21These offerings do the heavy lifting
and foundation laying, -
0:21 - 0:23the repair and renovation
of the basic structure -
0:23 - 0:26of the Church's work around the world.
-
0:26 - 0:27Without the mission offerings,
-
0:27 - 0:31all the other structures
and systems built upon it could crumble. -
0:31 - 0:34Your mission offerings
are like a life-giving river -
0:34 - 0:37with tributaries flowing around the world,
-
0:37 - 0:40carrying refreshing water
to mission fields. -
0:40 - 0:43Sometimes we want
to give to a specific project -
0:43 - 0:45or to put our offerings
towards something special -
0:45 - 0:47that stirs our hearts.
-
0:47 - 0:50We see the results. We feel satisfied.
-
0:50 - 0:55Giving to the mission offering may not be
as glamorous as giving to a specific, -
0:55 - 0:58well-advertised project or program.
-
0:58 - 1:02But wait! If it weren’t
for mission offering to sustain them, -
1:02 - 1:04these projects would never happen.
-
1:04 - 1:07So what happens
to our tithes and offerings? -
1:07 - 1:11Well, when we return 10%
of our income as tithe to God, -
1:11 - 1:14the Adventist Church uses it
to support pastors and evangelists, -
1:14 - 1:18as well as some teachers and other workers
involved in spreading the gospel. -
1:19 - 1:24On the front lines of mission,
tithe is not used to fund orphanages, -
1:24 - 1:26schools, or health programs,
-
1:26 - 1:29and it doesn’t cover miscellaneous
operational expenses either. -
1:29 - 1:32The mission offering does this!
-
1:32 - 1:36You see, our mission offerings fund
what can’t be funded through tithe. -
1:37 - 1:41So when mission giving falls,
then work gets cut back worldwide. -
1:42 - 1:45Mission projects falter.
The movement stutters. -
1:46 - 1:48None of us want this to happen.
-
1:48 - 1:50So our mission offerings help ensure
-
1:50 - 1:54that mission work operates
continuously around the world. -
1:54 - 1:57Want to see how our giving
impacts people around the globe? -
1:57 - 2:01Mission 360º TV programs,
Mission Spotlight, -
2:01 - 2:03and the Mission quarterlies
offer regular updates -
2:03 - 2:05on mission around the world.
-
2:05 - 2:08These stories take you
to dozens of countries -
2:08 - 2:10to see what Adventists are doing in places
-
2:10 - 2:12you may have never even heard of.
-
2:12 - 2:14And what about
the 13th Sabbath Offering, -
2:14 - 2:16which began in 1912?
-
2:16 - 2:19For many years, this offering
was an overflow offering. -
2:19 - 2:22A budget was set to fund
the mission program, -
2:22 - 2:25and once that money was raised,
any extra, the overflow, -
2:25 - 2:29was used to support
a special project chosen for that quarter. -
2:29 - 2:34However, during a recession in the 1970s,
there was no overflow offering. -
2:35 - 2:39So church leaders voted
to always send 25% of the offering -
2:39 - 2:42collected on the 13th Sabbath
to support specific projects -
2:42 - 2:45for each division on a rotational basis.
-
2:45 - 2:49Through your 13th Sabbath Offerings
you have helped build schools, -
2:49 - 2:53dormitories, hospitals,
clinics, and church buildings, -
2:54 - 2:57launched mission boats,
and set up lamb-shelters, -
2:57 - 3:00printing presses, universities and more--
-
3:00 - 3:03altogether, more than a thousand projects.
-
3:03 - 3:06And because tithe money
can’t be used for buildings, -
3:06 - 3:08the 13th Sabbath Offering
has frequently been used -
3:08 - 3:10for construction projects.
-
3:10 - 3:14All of this could have never happened
without the Holy Spirit’s leading -
3:14 - 3:17and your regular, faithful support
of the mission offerings. -
3:18 - 3:21We encourage you
to join Adventists everywhere -
3:21 - 3:23to prayerfully consider what you can do
-
3:23 - 3:26to keep a faithful river
of mission offerings, -
3:26 - 3:30bringing life-giving water
to mission fields around the world.
