Rhythm Guitar Basics 3 (Guitar Lesson BC-156) Guitar for beginners Stage 5
-
0:09 - 0:10How are you doing? Justin here.
-
0:11 - 0:12In this lesson we're going to be checking out
-
0:12 - 0:14a "blues shuffle rhythm".
-
0:14 - 0:17Now, hopefully you've checked out
the previous lesson on triplets -
0:17 - 0:18and you're kind of comfy
-
0:18 - 0:20with the idea of counting triplets,
-
0:20 - 0:21cos if you're not,
-
0:21 - 0:23you're going to find this lesson little difficult.
-
0:23 - 0:24So go and check it out if you haven't.
-
0:24 - 0:26So, what is a blues shuffle?
-
0:26 - 0:27Well, first of all I'm just going to play you
-
0:27 - 0:28a little bit of a shuffle rhythm,
-
0:28 - 0:30so you'll kind of get an idea of what's going on.
-
0:30 - 0:31It sounds kind of like this:
-
0:31 - 0:36...
-
0:36 - 0:37You use it for blues.
-
0:37 - 0:51...
-
0:51 - 0:53It's that kind of thing.
-
0:53 - 0:55It's a real chink-kaa, chink-kaa,
-
0:55 - 0:57chink-kaa, chink kind of feel.
-
0:57 - 0:58Now...
-
0:58 - 0:59officially...
-
0:59 - 1:01what a swing is
-
1:01 - 1:02and what a swing is in or shuffle...
-
1:03 - 1:04swing and shuffle
are generally synonymous, -
1:04 - 1:05you can use whatever term you want,
-
1:05 - 1:06there are slight differences,
-
1:06 - 1:08but not that I want to go into it just right now.
-
1:09 - 1:11The degree of shuffle is something
-
1:11 - 1:13that you can learn by listening.
-
1:13 - 1:15You can do it kind of mathematically if you want,
-
1:15 - 1:16but remember:
-
1:16 - 1:17the more you think about this sort of stuff,
-
1:17 - 1:19the more you stink.
-
1:19 - 1:20You really have to just listen to it,
-
1:20 - 1:22let it become kind of instinctive
-
1:22 - 1:23and get playing it.
-
1:24 - 1:26We've already talked about triplet as being a count,
-
1:26 - 1:29being 1 trip-let, 2 trip-let,
-
1:29 - 1:313 trip-let, 4 trip-let
-
1:31 - 1:32which of course,
-
1:32 - 1:35if you think of each triplet
as being one, two, three, -
1:35 - 1:36it's kinda going one, two, three;
-
1:36 - 1:37one, two, three;
-
1:37 - 1:37one, two three;
-
1:37 - 1:39one, two, three.
-
1:39 - 1:42And what we're going to do
to get our blues shuffle -
1:42 - 1:43is we're going to miss out the middle one,
-
1:43 - 1:46which is the count of "trip"
-
1:46 - 1:48or would be the "two",
if we were counting -
1:48 - 1:49one, two, three; one, two, three,
-
1:49 - 1:51that kind of thing.
-
1:51 - 1:53So, first of all I'm going
to explain the triplet version. -
1:53 - 1:54So if we are going:
-
1:54 - 1:551 (trip)-let,
-
1:55 - 1:562 (trip)-let,
-
1:57 - 1:573 (trip)-let,
-
1:58 - 1:594 (trip)-let,
-
2:00 - 2:01you can see
that I'm missing that middle one. -
2:01 - 2:03So if I'm playing wise,
-
2:03 - 2:05I'll be using down strum on the beat,
-
2:05 - 2:06the 1, 2, 3 and the 4,
-
2:06 - 2:10and up strum
on the "let" part of the "trip-let" -
2:10 - 2:11So we have:
-
2:11 - 2:121 (trip)-let,
-
2:12 - 2:142 (trip)-let,
-
2:14 - 2:153 (trip)-let,
-
2:15 - 2:174 (trip)-let,
-
2:17 - 2:181 (trip)-let,
-
2:19 - 2:202 (trip)-let,
-
2:20 - 2:213 (trip)-let,
-
2:21 - 2:234 (trip)-let.
-
2:23 - 2:24Now...
-
2:24 - 2:25I'm doing it with 7th chords,
-
2:25 - 2:27you can do it really with whatever chords you like
-
2:27 - 2:28but actually lets do it,
-
2:28 - 2:29have a little bit of a go
-
2:29 - 2:31at doing this nice and slowly together.
-
2:31 - 2:33So, I'm gonna play a G7 chord,
-
2:33 - 2:35nice stretchy one for you,
-
2:35 - 2:36make sure you get your fingers working properly,
-
2:36 - 2:38....
-
2:38 - 2:38Sounds like this.
-
2:38 - 2:40So I'm gonna give you three-four-in
-
2:40 - 2:42and then we're just going to be doing:
-
2:42 - 2:431 (trip)-let,
-
2:43 - 2:44down (....)-up,
-
2:45 - 2:46down (....)-up,
-
2:46 - 2:48down (....)-up
-
2:48 - 2:49each time.
-
2:49 - 2:50Just do it really slow, so off we go:
-
2:50 - 2:523 (trip)-let,
-
2:52 - 2:534 (trip)-let,
-
2:54 - 2:551 (trip)-let,
-
2:55 - 2:562 (trip)-let,
-
2:57 - 2:583 (trip)-let,
-
2:58 - 3:004 (trip)-let;
-
3:00 - 3:01down (....)-up,
-
3:01 - 3:03down (....)-up,
-
3:03 - 3:04down (....)-up,
-
3:04 - 3:05down (....)
-
3:05 - 3:06Keep going.
-up -
3:06 - 3:071 (trip)-let,
-
3:07 - 3:092 (trip)-let,
-
3:09 - 3:103 (trip)-let,
-
3:10 - 3:124 (trip)-let;
-
3:12 - 3:13Keep going.
-
3:13 - 3:14up,
-
3:14 - 3:151 (trip)-let,
-
3:15 - 3:162 (trip)-let,
-
3:16 - 3:183 (trip)-let;
-
3:18 - 3:191 (trip)-let,
-
3:19 - 3:212 (trip)-let,
-
3:21 - 3:223 (trip)-let,
-
3:22 - 3:234 (trip)-let.
-
3:23 - 3:24Keep going.
-
3:24 - 3:251 (trip)-let,
-
3:25 - 3:262 (trip)-let,
-
3:26 - 3:283 (trip)-let,
-
3:28 - 3:294 (trip)-let.
-
3:29 - 3:301 (trip)-let,
-
3:31 - 3:322 (trip)-let,
-
3:32 - 3:343 (trip)-let,
-
3:34 - 3:354 (trip)-let...
-
3:35 - 3:36And we'll finish there, I think.
-
3:36 - 3:38So, this is the idea here,
-
3:38 - 3:39you should just be trying
-
3:39 - 3:40to play along really nice and slow,
-
3:40 - 3:43get used to the dooh-kaa-kaa, dooh-kaa-kaa.
-
3:43 - 3:45Now, kind of weird thing about it
-
3:45 - 3:47is that your hand
has to pause after the down stroke -
3:48 - 3:50and with all of the other
rhythm stuff that you're doing, -
3:50 - 3:53it's really, really, really important
that your hand doesn't stop moving -
3:53 - 3:55this is the one example, where
-
3:55 - 3:58it kind of it does need
to have a little bit of a pause. -
3:58 - 4:00Although, that's a kind of...
-
4:00 - 4:02just for now you get
a real feeling of the pause. -
4:02 - 4:03As soon as you start to speeding it up,
-
4:03 - 4:04and you kinda get a:
-
4:04 - 4:13...
-
4:13 - 4:14As soon as it's little bit faster,
-
4:14 - 4:16you don't have that feeling of a pause.
-
4:16 - 4:17So don't worry about it,
-
4:17 - 4:20it's not like it's ok to pause,
-
4:20 - 4:20it's not.
-
4:20 - 4:21You just change the kind of the feel,
-
4:21 - 4:23it becomes kind of more "flicky".
-
4:23 - 4:25But for this early stage,
-
4:25 - 4:27you just try to play it really straight,
-
4:27 - 4:28get used to the idea of:
-
4:28 - 4:291 (trip)-let,
-
4:29 - 4:302 (trip)-let,
-
4:30 - 4:313 (trip)-let,
-
4:31 - 4:324 (trip)-let.
-
4:35 - 4:37Once you feel really comfortable
with that blues shuffle rhythm, -
4:37 - 4:39I want you to try and apply it
-
4:39 - 4:41to the three different 12 bar blues sequences
-
4:41 - 4:45that we have in the common chord
sequences section of this website -
4:45 - 4:47and also any blues song
-
4:47 - 4:48that you might know or like to learn.
-
4:48 - 4:50So, we're just going to be using
all of the dominant chords -
4:50 - 4:52that we've learned so far.
-
4:52 - 4:54The one that we're going to do now is just...
-
4:54 - 4:56I'm gonna get you to have a...
-
4:56 - 4:57listen to a blues in E,
-
4:57 - 4:59all of the way through
with the shuffle rhythm -
4:59 - 5:01and after you've done a bit of practise on it
-
5:01 - 5:02nice and slowly,
-
5:02 - 5:03you might wanna come back
-
5:03 - 5:05and have a bit of a play along with this one.
-
5:05 - 5:07So, we're just gonna be using
-
5:07 - 5:09E7, A7 and B7 chords.
-
5:10 - 5:11Check out the common chord sequences
-
5:11 - 5:13for the right chord progression here.
-
5:13 - 5:14So, here we go,
-
5:14 - 5:16two, three, four:
-
5:16 - 5:43. . .
-
5:43 - 5:44And again:
-
5:44 - 6:13...
-
6:13 - 6:14Ok, we haven't done those
last couple of chords. -
6:14 - 6:16but hopefully you can
play along with all of that, -
6:16 - 6:17get the chink-kaa,
-
6:17 - 6:18chink-kaa,
-
6:18 - 6:19chink-kaa
-
6:19 - 6:20happening.
-
6:20 - 6:22It's really good fun to play
this kind of blues -
6:22 - 6:25and you'll find there are hundreds
and hundreds of blues songs -
6:25 - 6:27that use the simple 12 bar
blues chord progression. -
6:27 - 6:29If you got your shuffle rhythm down,
-
6:29 - 6:30that's a whole big heap of tunes
-
6:30 - 6:33that you can play just with
that little bit of information. -
6:33 - 6:36So, hope you've had
a little bit of fun with that -
6:36 - 6:37and I'll see you for another
lesson very soon. -
6:37 - 6:39Bye, bye!
