Jesus Restores Peter - Mack Tomlinson

  • 0:00 - 0:05
    John 21.
  • 0:05 - 0:07
I want to speak this morning,
  • 0:07 - 0:08
    the Lord helping me,
  • 0:08 - 0:13
    on Jesus restores Peter.
  • 0:13 - 0:16
    Jesus restores Peter.
  • 0:16 - 0:21
    John 21:15-23.
  • 0:21 - 0:24
    Lord, help us now.
  • 0:24 - 0:32
    John 21:15-23.
  • 0:32 - 0:34
"And when they had finished breakfast,
  • 0:34 - 0:37
    Jesus said to Simon Peter,
  • 0:37 - 0:40
    'Simon, son of John,
  • 0:40 - 0:44
do you love Me more than these?'
  • 0:44 - 0:46
    He said to Him,
  • 0:46 - 0:50
'Yes Lord, You know that I love You.'
  • 0:50 - 0:53
He said to him, 'Feed My lambs.'
  • 0:53 - 0:55
He said to him a second time,
  • 0:55 - 1:00
'Simon, son of John, do you love Me?'
  • 1:00 - 1:01
    He said to Him,
  • 1:01 - 1:04
'Yes Lord, You know that I love You.'
  • 1:04 - 1:06
    He said to him,
  • 1:06 - 1:09
    'Tend My sheep.'
  • 1:09 - 1:12
He said to him a third time,
  • 1:12 - 1:16
'Simon, son of John, do you love Me?'
  • 1:16 - 1:18
    Peter was grieved
  • 1:18 - 1:20
because He said to him the third time,
  • 1:20 - 1:23
    'Do you love Me?'
  • 1:23 - 1:24
    And he said to Him,
  • 1:24 - 1:29
    'Lord, You know everything.
  • 1:29 - 1:32
You know that I love You.'
  • 1:32 - 1:34
    Jesus said to him,
  • 1:34 - 1:36
    'Feed My sheep.
  • 1:36 - 1:37
    Truly, I say to you,
  • 1:37 - 1:39
    when you were young,
  • 1:39 - 1:42
    you used to dress yourself
  • 1:42 - 1:46
    and walk wherever you wanted,
  • 1:46 - 1:47
    but when you are old,
  • 1:47 - 1:49
you will stretch out your hands
  • 1:49 - 1:50
    and another will dress you
  • 1:50 - 1:54
    and carry you where
you do not want to go.'
  • 1:54 - 1:57
This He said to show by what kind of death
  • 1:57 - 2:02
he (that is Peter) was to glorify God.
  • 2:02 - 2:07
And after saying this, He said to him,
  • 2:07 - 2:09
    'Follow Me.'
  • 2:09 - 2:12
    Peter turned and saw the
    disciple whom Jesus loved
  • 2:12 - 2:14
    following them,
  • 2:14 - 2:17
    the one who had been
reclining at table close to Him,
  • 2:17 - 2:23
    who had said, 'Lord, who
is it that will betray you?'
  • 2:23 - 2:25
when Peter saw him, he said to Jesus,
  • 2:25 - 2:29
    'Lord, what about this man?'
  • 2:29 - 2:30
    Jesus said to him,
  • 2:30 - 2:33
'If it is My will that he
    remain until I come,
  • 2:33 - 2:35
    what is that to you?
  • 2:35 - 2:38
    You follow Me.'
  • 2:38 - 2:41
    So the saying spread abroad
    among the brothers
  • 2:41 - 2:44
that this disciple was not to die.
  • 2:44 - 2:46
Yet, Jesus did not say to him
  • 2:46 - 2:48
that he was not to die,
  • 2:48 - 2:52
but if it is My will that he
    remains until I come,
  • 2:52 - 2:58
    what is that to you?"
  • 2:58 - 3:03
    During the 40 days
  • 3:03 - 3:06
    between the resurrection
    and the ascension of Christ,
  • 3:06 - 3:11
    where was Jesus?
  • 3:11 - 3:13
Well, He was not as commonly thought
  • 3:13 - 3:19
    on earth continually for
    40 days in Jerusalem.
  • 3:19 - 3:22
    He's now after the resurrection
    what has been called
  • 3:22 - 3:28
    the Heavenly Man in Paradise.
  • 3:28 - 3:29
And He will now over 40 days
  • 3:29 - 3:33
make appearances in and around Jerusalem.
  • 3:33 - 3:35
    He appears to many.
  • 3:35 - 3:40
    That is, He surprised
    unannounced appearances.
  • 3:40 - 3:43
He just pops into locked rooms.
  • 3:43 - 3:45
He just suddenly appears here and there.
  • 3:45 - 3:48
Two guys walking on the Emmaus road,
  • 3:48 - 3:49
    grieving, sharing,
  • 3:49 - 3:51
    suddenly this Stranger appears,
  • 3:51 - 3:52
    starts walking with them -
  • 3:52 - 3:56
    He's making appearances.
  • 3:56 - 3:58
    Resurrection appearances.
  • 3:58 - 4:00
The Gospels say that when they
  • 4:00 - 4:02
were in the upper room at one point,
  • 4:02 - 4:06
He came and stood among them.
  • 4:06 - 4:08
    How many appearances were there?
  • 4:08 - 4:11
    After the resurrection,
    before the ascension?
  • 4:11 - 4:15
Well, 14 are mentioned in the Gospels,
  • 4:15 - 4:17
in the book of Acts, Galatians,
  • 4:17 - 4:19
    and 1 Corinthians 15.
  • 4:19 - 4:21
    Different days and different times
  • 4:21 - 4:22
    the Lord appeared.
  • 4:22 - 4:25
    First to Mary Magdalene,
  • 4:25 - 4:29
    second to some women
    returning from the tomb,
  • 4:29 - 4:31
    third to Peter, fourth appearance
  • 4:31 - 4:34
was to the two on the Emmaus road,
  • 4:34 - 4:37
    fifth appearance was
    to 10 of the disciples
  • 4:37 - 4:39
    in the upper room,
  • 4:39 - 4:41
the sixth appearance was 11 of them -
  • 4:41 - 4:44
    remember Thomas wasn't
    there the first time -
  • 4:44 - 4:46
11 disciples in the upper room,
  • 4:46 - 4:50
    the seventh appearance
is this one - John 21.
  • 4:50 - 4:55
    The disciples fishing on
    the Sea of Tiberius.
  • 4:55 - 4:57
This is here in John 21.
  • 4:57 - 4:58
    And there are six more,
  • 4:58 - 5:01
    including appearances to James,
  • 5:01 - 5:03
    Stephen, Saul of Tarsus,
  • 5:03 - 5:07
and John on the isle of Patmos.
  • 5:07 - 5:08
    And then the biggest group
  • 5:08 - 5:11
    Paul interestingly mentions
    in 1 Corinthians 15,
  • 5:11 - 5:14
how the Lord appeared to over 500
  • 5:14 - 5:17
    at one time.
  • 5:17 - 5:21
So here in John 21 is His 7th appearance
  • 5:21 - 5:23
    where the disciples are fishing,
  • 5:23 - 5:25
    they've gone fishing.
  • 5:25 - 5:30
    And virtually all of this
    chapter of John 21
  • 5:30 - 5:32
    records this appearance,
  • 5:32 - 5:34
    this event, this experience
  • 5:34 - 5:37
of the Lord with the disciples
  • 5:37 - 5:41
    and particularly with Peter.
  • 5:41 - 5:45
The entire scene - He comes to all of them
  • 5:45 - 5:47
and He's on the shore, they're fishing,
  • 5:47 - 5:52
    He says come, let's have
    breakfast together.
  • 5:52 - 5:55
And they recognize that it's the Lord.
  • 5:55 - 5:58
So this account is about Him
  • 5:58 - 6:00
    appearing to all of them,
  • 6:00 - 6:02
but then He's got His eye
  • 6:02 - 6:05
    particularly on one of them.
  • 6:05 - 6:08
And the entire scene is especially meant
  • 6:08 - 6:13
    to restore Peter fully,
  • 6:13 - 6:15
    where Peter knows it -
  • 6:15 - 6:17
and not only where he knows it,
  • 6:17 - 6:19
    where he feels it
  • 6:19 - 6:23
    and he experiences full restoration.
  • 6:23 - 6:25
You know, I'm a baseball fan.
  • 6:25 - 6:27
My son was a good baseball player,
  • 6:27 - 6:29
    and Philip Neeley and I,
  • 6:29 - 6:31
    we have an annual trip
  • 6:31 - 6:33
to watch one pro baseball game.
  • 6:33 - 6:34
    I enjoy baseball.
  • 6:34 - 6:36
We usually talk more about the Gospel
  • 6:36 - 6:37
    and the kingdom
  • 6:37 - 6:39
    than we do watch baseball,
  • 6:39 - 6:42
    but I like baseball.
  • 6:42 - 6:44
A triple in baseball is more rare
  • 6:44 - 6:47
    even than a home run.
  • 6:47 - 6:53
Well, Peter had a triple denial of Jesus.
  • 6:53 - 6:55
And remember he went out and did what?
  • 6:55 - 6:59
    He wept bitterly.
  • 6:59 - 7:02
If you documented all of Peter's
  • 7:02 - 7:07
    major responses to the
    Lord Jesus in 3 years,
  • 7:07 - 7:08
where he was right or he was wrong,
  • 7:08 - 7:13
    where he was victorious
    or he was a failure,
  • 7:13 - 7:16
at the calming of the sea in the boat,
  • 7:16 - 7:18
    his response was:
  • 7:18 - 7:19
    "Depart from me, Lord,
  • 7:19 - 7:21
for I am a sinful man."
  • 7:21 - 7:22
    That's a victory.
  • 7:22 - 7:25
    That's a right response.
  • 7:25 - 7:26
    And then he says later
  • 7:26 - 7:28
    when the Lord asked him:
  • 7:28 - 7:29
"Who do men say that I am?"
  • 7:29 - 7:31
    "Peter, what about you?"
  • 7:31 - 7:34
    "You are the Christ, the
    Son of the living God."
  • 7:34 - 7:35
    Victory.
  • 7:35 - 7:36
    Right.
  • 7:36 - 7:38
    "Flesh and blood have
    not revealed this to you.
  • 7:38 - 7:41
My Father in heaven revealed this to you."
  • 7:41 - 7:44
    And then, Peter turns around
  • 7:44 - 7:48
    this same hour when the
    Lord has told them plainly
  • 7:48 - 7:50
    He's going to be rejected,
  • 7:50 - 7:53
He's going to suffer and die.
  • 7:53 - 7:56
Peter takes Him aside, and Mark says
  • 7:56 - 8:00
that Peter began to rebuke Him.
  • 8:00 - 8:03
    And the Lord interrupts
    him and rebukes him
  • 8:03 - 8:05
and says, "Get behind Me, Satan!"
  • 8:05 - 8:08
    Failure.
  • 8:08 - 8:09
    Peter's failure.
  • 8:09 - 8:11
    Walking on the water,
  • 8:11 - 8:13
    sinking in unbelief.
  • 8:13 - 8:15
    Failure.
  • 8:15 - 8:17
Discussing who's going to be the greatest.
  • 8:17 - 8:19
    Failure.
  • 8:19 - 8:21
    Self-confidently affirming:
  • 8:21 - 8:23
"I will never fail. I will never deny You.
  • 8:23 - 8:26
Even if everyone else does, I will not."
  • 8:26 - 8:28
    Failure.
  • 8:28 - 8:31
    He denies the Lord three
    times with an oath,
  • 8:31 - 8:33
    failure, failure, failure.
  • 8:33 - 8:38
Seven of these nine times were failures,
  • 8:38 - 8:41
    like a necklace that you
    might have stringed together -
  • 8:41 - 8:46
    two nice pearls with seven
    ugly thorns on the necklace.
  • 8:46 - 8:49
    Well, the pearls are nice
    and they're wonderful,
  • 8:49 - 8:55
but it would be better if there
    weren't the ugly thorns, right?
  • 8:55 - 8:57
What would that final massive failure
  • 8:57 - 9:01
of denials do to Peter's heart?
  • 9:01 - 9:04
And where did it leave him spiritually?
  • 9:04 - 9:05
    We don't know.
  • 9:05 - 9:07
    The Gospel writers don't
    give us an insight.
  • 9:07 - 9:08
    They don't give us details.
  • 9:08 - 9:12
    They don't give us Peter's
    testimony about it.
  • 9:12 - 9:14
But what happens in the heart and mind
  • 9:14 - 9:16
and emotions and in the soul
  • 9:16 - 9:20
of a believer who stumbles so much?
  • 9:20 - 9:22
    Who fails?
  • 9:22 - 9:24
    Who in weak moments
  • 9:24 - 9:26
    makes wrong choices?
  • 9:26 - 9:30
    And is not even themselves?
  • 9:30 - 9:32
    And they sin so miserably?
  • 9:32 - 9:34
You know, if the other disciples
  • 9:34 - 9:37
had been around the fire that night
  • 9:37 - 9:39
    with Peter warming himself
  • 9:39 - 9:42
    and had heard Peter,
  • 9:42 - 9:44
they would have all been shocked.
  • 9:44 - 9:46
Perhaps if they had been there
  • 9:46 - 9:48
    he would have been strengthened
  • 9:48 - 9:51
to not deny the Lord, but he does.
  • 9:51 - 9:53
    What does a Christian experience
  • 9:53 - 9:56
within the walls of his own heart
  • 9:56 - 9:58
    and his own thoughts?
  • 9:58 - 10:02
All Christian experience - good or bad -
  • 10:02 - 10:06
    involves and never lacks
  • 10:06 - 10:09
    true human emotion, feelings.
  • 10:09 - 10:13
The human drama of experiential realities
  • 10:13 - 10:16
that go on that God sees,
  • 10:16 - 10:18
    that you experience,
  • 10:18 - 10:21
and nobody knows it's going on
  • 10:21 - 10:22
    when it's happening.
  • 10:22 - 10:26
    Wounded, hurting, reeling, doubting.
  • 10:26 - 10:30
    What all was Peter experiencing?
    We don't know.
  • 10:30 - 10:32
    What is certain is this:
  • 10:32 - 10:34
    All Christian experience -
  • 10:34 - 10:37
    both victories in obedience
  • 10:37 - 10:38
    and failures in sin -
  • 10:38 - 10:42
all Christian experience has woven into it
  • 10:42 - 10:46
the human fabric of every real
  • 10:46 - 10:50
    human emotion, struggle, and battle.
  • 10:50 - 10:52
    Anger.
  • 10:52 - 10:53
    Fear.
  • 10:53 - 10:55
    Frustration.
  • 10:55 - 10:56
    Weak moments of compromise.
  • 10:56 - 10:58
    An unrenewed mind
  • 10:58 - 11:00
that in moments doesn't view things right
  • 11:00 - 11:02
    and you believe a lie.
  • 11:02 - 11:03
    Deep feelings.
  • 11:03 - 11:06
    The pull of wrong desires.
  • 11:06 - 11:07
    When you know it's wrong
  • 11:07 - 11:09
and you're pulled more toward it
  • 11:09 - 11:11
    than away from it.
  • 11:11 - 11:14
Defeat in your heart by wrong choices.
  • 11:14 - 11:16
    Hope and sadness,
  • 11:16 - 11:18
    small and big consequences.
  • 11:18 - 11:21
    Small and big compromises.
  • 11:21 - 11:23
    And the sadness with feelings
  • 11:23 - 11:28
    of defeat and failure.
  • 11:28 - 11:33
    A believer can be left
    in such a condition.
  • 11:33 - 11:39
    It's like getting the breath
    knocked out of you severely.
  • 11:39 - 11:40
    You can't function.
  • 11:40 - 11:42
You can't even think clearly for awhile.
  • 11:42 - 11:45
    You can't respond,
    you can't talk about it.
  • 11:45 - 11:48
    The heavens are brass.
  • 11:48 - 11:51
    Your mind is clouded
  • 11:51 - 11:54
with feelings and thoughts and struggles.
  • 11:54 - 11:56
You don't even know how to see reality.
  • 11:56 - 12:02
    You're left stunned and passive
  • 12:02 - 12:05
    and unable to do
    anything except feel pain.
  • 12:05 - 12:09
    So Peter's condition -
    probably some of this
  • 12:09 - 12:12
and much of this in there
  • 12:12 - 12:14
    after the resurrection.
  • 12:14 - 12:18
When he realizes the Lord is raised,
  • 12:18 - 12:20
    he's astounded, he's amazed.
  • 12:20 - 12:23
    You know he had joy.
  • 12:23 - 12:27
But he had to still have baggage.
  • 12:27 - 12:31
    And isn't that the process
    of sanctification
  • 12:31 - 12:33
    when the Lord saves us?
  • 12:33 - 12:35
    Sanctification is the Holy Spirit
  • 12:35 - 12:38
    dealing with all our baggage.
  • 12:38 - 12:41
    A lot of baggage.
  • 12:41 - 12:45
    Still regrets that will
    hinder Peter's future
  • 12:45 - 12:47
    had to have been there.
  • 12:47 - 12:52
    If not, why would Jesus
    pull him aside here
  • 12:52 - 12:54
not to remind him of his past,
  • 12:54 - 12:57
not to say, hey Peter, remember the fire?
  • 12:57 - 12:58
    Remember what you did?
  • 12:58 - 13:01
    Remember when our eyes met?
  • 13:01 - 13:02
    Remember, Peter?
  • 13:02 - 13:04
    The Lord didn't do that.
  • 13:04 - 13:06
Not to remind him of his past,
  • 13:06 - 13:08
but to call him to the future
  • 13:08 - 13:11
and heal him with His love.
  • 13:11 - 13:13
    That's what's involved here.
    That's what's going on.
  • 13:13 - 13:17
How does the Lord do this?
  • 13:17 - 13:19
    There is nothing more beautiful and wise;
  • 13:19 - 13:21
there is no more beautiful and wise
  • 13:21 - 13:23
    approach in the Bible
  • 13:23 - 13:26
    of personal restoration and revival
  • 13:26 - 13:30
than the Lord's dealings with Peter here.
  • 13:30 - 13:33
What is the Lord's approach and process?
  • 13:33 - 13:42
    Well, it's wonderful. Look at v. 12.
  • 13:42 - 13:47
Let's go to IHOP (breakfast restaurant).
  • 13:47 - 13:51
    Let's have breakfast, guys.
  • 13:51 - 13:53
    What was Peter thinking?
  • 13:53 - 13:56
    Apparently, he and the Lord
had not had a sit down yet.
  • 13:56 - 13:59
They had not been able to discuss things.
  • 13:59 - 14:01
    And Peter it seemed -
  • 14:01 - 14:03
we don't know what was said -
  • 14:03 - 14:06
    but here's a post-resurrection
  • 14:06 - 14:10
    restoration breakfast party.
  • 14:10 - 14:12
    And they're just going
    to eat together first.
  • 14:12 - 14:16
What an approach! It breaks the ice.
  • 14:16 - 14:19
    Let's have breakfast.
  • 14:19 - 14:22
This is relational. This is time together.
  • 14:22 - 14:26
    And after a fellowship
    meal with all of them,
  • 14:26 - 14:29
    and an atmosphere of welcome
  • 14:29 - 14:31
    and acceptance and peace,
  • 14:31 - 14:34
Jesus then turns His attention one-on-one,
  • 14:34 - 14:36
He turns His heart and His attention
  • 14:36 - 14:40
    to Peter for one-on-one ministry.
  • 14:40 - 14:42
And we're going to see beginning in v. 15
  • 14:42 - 14:45
the Lord's call of Peter not to look back,
  • 14:45 - 14:48
but His call of Peter to go forward.
  • 14:48 - 14:51
Onward, upward, out of the lowlands
  • 14:51 - 14:54
    of a blistering defeat.
  • 14:54 - 14:57
The higher ground of love and grace.
  • 14:57 - 15:00
    What does the Lord say
    to Peter to restore him?
  • 15:00 - 15:04
    First of all: Love Me.
  • 15:04 - 15:06
    Verses 15-17,
  • 15:06 - 15:08
    "When they had finished breakfast,
  • 15:08 - 15:10
    Jesus said to Simon Peter,
  • 15:10 - 15:16
'Simon, do you love Me more than these?'
  • 15:16 - 15:19
'Yes Lord, You know I love You.'"
  • 15:19 - 15:23
    Verse 16,
  • 15:23 - 15:24
    "Simon, do you love Me?"
  • 15:24 - 15:26
"Yes Lord, You know I love You."
  • 15:26 - 15:27
    Verse 17,
  • 15:27 - 15:30
    "Simon, do you love Me?"
  • 15:30 - 15:33
Peter was grieved, but he said,
  • 15:33 - 15:34
    "Yes Lord, You know everything.
  • 15:34 - 15:37
You know that I love You."
  • 15:37 - 15:40
Why this broken record of love?
  • 15:40 - 15:43
    Peter had a triple denial,
  • 15:43 - 15:46
and here the Lord hits a triple too.
  • 15:46 - 15:49
    Do you love Me?
  • 15:49 - 15:52
    Whatever failure you've had -
  • 15:52 - 15:55
    distance or last week -
  • 15:55 - 15:58
the Lord's word to you right now is:
  • 15:58 - 16:00
    Do you love Me?
  • 16:00 - 16:01
    Do you love Me?
  • 16:01 - 16:03
Isn't it obvious that Jesus is
  • 16:03 - 16:06
    gently blowing on the embers
  • 16:06 - 16:09
    of Peter's wounded heart
  • 16:09 - 16:13
to rekindle a mutual love relationship?
  • 16:13 - 16:16
Breakfast is finished with all of them.
  • 16:16 - 16:18
And He sits down with Peter:
  • 16:18 - 16:21
    Peter, do you love Me?
  • 16:21 - 16:23
Do you love Me more than these?
  • 16:23 - 16:25
Now what did He mean by that?
  • 16:25 - 16:27
    More than these things?
  • 16:27 - 16:30
    No, obviously, that's
    not what He's saying.
  • 16:30 - 16:31
    Do you love Me more
  • 16:31 - 16:34
than you love these other disciples?
  • 16:34 - 16:36
    That's not it either.
  • 16:36 - 16:40
It's this: Do you love Me
  • 16:40 - 16:45
more than these other disciples love Me?
  • 16:45 - 16:47
Why would the Lord do that?
  • 16:47 - 16:49
    Because Peter, remember,
  • 16:49 - 16:53
    had confidently boasted days before:
  • 16:53 - 16:59
If they all forsake You, I won't.
  • 16:59 - 17:04
    I'm further along in my
    sanctification than these guys are.
  • 17:04 - 17:06
    I'll never do it.
  • 17:06 - 17:09
I'll die with You before I deny You.
  • 17:09 - 17:11
Peter confidently stated he would have
  • 17:11 - 17:15
    devotion that exceeds theirs.
  • 17:15 - 17:18
    Well, you know, it didn't
    take death to deny Jesus.
  • 17:18 - 17:23
It only took a servant girl by the fire
  • 17:23 - 17:25
    glancing at him and then
    taking a second look
  • 17:25 - 17:29
and realizing: Hey, you were with Him!
  • 17:29 - 17:32
    You're one of them!
  • 17:32 - 17:35
It only took that for Peter suddenly
  • 17:35 - 17:37
to deny the Lord three times
  • 17:37 - 17:38
    even with an oath.
  • 17:38 - 17:39
    That's all it took.
  • 17:39 - 17:44
    Peter didn't have the devoted
    love he thought he had.
  • 17:44 - 17:46
He wasn't as far along as he thought.
  • 17:46 - 17:49
    He didn't see that he
    was yet capable of this.
  • 17:49 - 17:51
    He thought more highly
    of himself than he should.
  • 17:51 - 17:53
    He boasted of greater love,
  • 17:53 - 17:55
but he failed the first test.
  • 17:55 - 17:58
And even did what others did not do.
  • 17:58 - 18:00
He denied the Lord three times.
  • 18:00 - 18:04
    So certainly, the Lord is
saying to Peter and to us:
  • 18:04 - 18:10
Peter, what about your love for Me now?
  • 18:10 - 18:12
Do you still believe you love Me more
  • 18:12 - 18:15
    than the others love Me?
  • 18:15 - 18:16
    What's the Lord doing here?
  • 18:16 - 18:19
He's doing heart surgery on Peter here
  • 18:19 - 18:22
    to begin the healing balm
  • 18:22 - 18:24
    of restored love.
  • 18:24 - 18:26
It would be hard and humiliating
  • 18:26 - 18:28
    to be in Peter's place
  • 18:28 - 18:31
    because those feelings
  • 18:31 - 18:33
    and human thoughts and emotions
  • 18:33 - 18:38
of how does the Lord really view me now?
  • 18:38 - 18:44
We've not really yet talked about this.
  • 18:44 - 18:46
It's hard to look Him in the eye.
  • 18:46 - 18:49
Because He looked at me after I denied Him
  • 18:49 - 18:51
and that look has haunted me ever since.
  • 18:51 - 18:53
How could I have done it?
  • 18:53 - 18:55
    What a fool I was!
  • 18:55 - 18:56
    What a failure I've been!
  • 18:56 - 18:59
    Where do I stand now?
  • 18:59 - 19:02
    Do the other disciples
    even want me around?
  • 19:02 - 19:04
    Do they trust me?
  • 19:04 - 19:06
Things can't ever be the same.
  • 19:06 - 19:07
    As the song says,
  • 19:07 - 19:12
that was then, but this is now.
  • 19:12 - 19:13
    What all did Peter feel?
  • 19:13 - 19:16
Well, we're not clear, but what is clear
  • 19:16 - 19:18
is wounded Peter wasn't healed yet
  • 19:18 - 19:21
and Jesus is healing him here.
  • 19:21 - 19:24
In light of his denials, his humiliation,
  • 19:24 - 19:25
    his seeing his own heart,
  • 19:25 - 19:27
    his tears of repentance,
  • 19:27 - 19:32
    where does his love for
    the Savior stand now?
  • 19:32 - 19:35
Now, how is loving the Savior
  • 19:35 - 19:37
    when you've sinned against Him
  • 19:37 - 19:40
and you've failed Him so much?
  • 19:40 - 19:43
    Restored love is the need.
  • 19:43 - 19:45
And isn't that the need for all of us?
  • 19:45 - 19:46
    Always.
  • 19:46 - 19:49
    And it's always the remedy
  • 19:49 - 19:54
    for restoration and for
    being turned again.
  • 19:54 - 19:56
    The Lord Jesus Christ here
  • 19:56 - 20:01
    loves Peter tenderly,
    patiently, and perfectly,
  • 20:01 - 20:03
and not only wants Peter to know it,
  • 20:03 - 20:05
He wants Peter to love Him right then.
  • 20:05 - 20:08
    That's why He's saying:
    Do you love Me, Peter?
  • 20:08 - 20:10
Come on, give Me your love.
  • 20:10 - 20:12
    Give Me your heart afresh.
  • 20:12 - 20:15
    He wants Peter's love
restored so Peter will be healed.
  • 20:15 - 20:19
    Now after the third question
    (Peter, do you love Me?),
  • 20:19 - 20:21
    Peter is grieved.
  • 20:21 - 20:23
What kind of grief was this?
  • 20:23 - 20:26
It was not the grief of
    embarrassment or hurt feelings.
  • 20:26 - 20:31
It was the grief of a sad, tender heart
  • 20:31 - 20:34
    who had failed his Lord.
  • 20:34 - 20:37
    Feelings of loving sorrow
  • 20:37 - 20:39
mixed with longing for the Lord.
  • 20:39 - 20:43
    Christ is drawing Peter
    with cords of love here.
  • 20:43 - 20:47
A threefold cord of a question of love.
  • 20:47 - 20:50
Christ - the goodness of God
  • 20:50 - 20:52
    is bringing Peter fully back
  • 20:52 - 20:56
    and it's painful. It's painful.
  • 20:56 - 20:59
This is Gospel surgery at its best.
  • 20:59 - 21:02
    Someone said, "Gospel
    surgery's always free,
  • 21:02 - 21:05
    but it's not always easy."
  • 21:05 - 21:07
Lee Dodd in our church weeks ago
  • 21:07 - 21:10
one Sunday morning speaking about Peter,
  • 21:10 - 21:12
he said, "It's as if Jesus is applying
  • 21:12 - 21:14
the healing ointment of His love,
  • 21:14 - 21:16
but it's going to sting a bit."
  • 21:16 - 21:19
Have you ever had a nurse
or a doctor tell you that?
  • 21:19 - 21:22
Now this is going to hurt a little.
  • 21:22 - 21:28
    The Lord Jesus' questions
    were stinging a bit.
  • 21:28 - 21:30
So Jesus is going for Peter's heart,
  • 21:30 - 21:32
and guess what, He's going to get it.
  • 21:32 - 21:34
He's going to get it fully back.
  • 21:34 - 21:37
    Peter, where does your love
  • 21:37 - 21:40
    stand with Me now?
  • 21:40 - 21:42
Because love is stronger than death.
  • 21:42 - 21:44
Love is stronger than a denial.
  • 21:44 - 21:46
Love is stronger than a failure.
  • 21:46 - 21:50
Love's stronger than you blowing it
  • 21:50 - 21:52
and not knowing if you can recover.
  • 21:52 - 21:55
Could Peter now truly say or not:
  • 21:55 - 22:00
If ever I love Thee, my Jesus, 'tis now.
  • 22:00 - 22:02
Peter must face it and answer it.
  • 22:02 - 22:04
Do you really love Me, Peter?
  • 22:04 - 22:06
    Not just with human sentiment
  • 22:06 - 22:09
and human love, but with divine love.
  • 22:09 - 22:14
    The call to love Him.
  • 22:14 - 22:17
    Secondly, verses 15-17.
  • 22:17 - 22:19
    The Lord says to Peter,
  • 22:19 - 22:21
    "Shepherd My sheep."
  • 22:21 - 22:23
    "Shepherd My sheep."
  • 22:23 - 22:26
The Lord is not only restoring
    Peter's love for Him,
  • 22:26 - 22:28
    He's restoring Peter's
    call to future ministry.
  • 22:28 - 22:32
But don't you think Peter felt inside:
  • 22:32 - 22:34
    I'm done.
  • 22:34 - 22:36
    I'm disqualified.
  • 22:36 - 22:38
    How could I?
  • 22:38 - 22:39
Who could ever listen to me again?
  • 22:39 - 22:42
Who could ever trust me again?
  • 22:42 - 22:44
Isn't it profound in a way
  • 22:44 - 22:45
that the triple denier of Jesus
  • 22:45 - 22:49
becomes the Apostle to the Jews?
  • 22:49 - 22:53
    I think that's pretty amazing.
  • 22:53 - 22:56
    The Lord links the
    threefold call to love Him
  • 22:56 - 22:59
    with a threefold call to
    now shepherd His sheep.
  • 22:59 - 23:03
If you love Me, feed My lambs.
  • 23:03 - 23:06
If you love Me, tend My sheep.
  • 23:06 - 23:10
If you love Me, feed My sheep.
  • 23:10 - 23:12
    Now the word "tend" there
  • 23:12 - 23:15
means to act as a shepherd toward them
  • 23:15 - 23:17
    in all that it means.
  • 23:17 - 23:19
In every way it means to shepherd
  • 23:19 - 23:22
and care for them, you do that.
  • 23:22 - 23:25
If you love Me, this is My
    love expressed through you.
  • 23:25 - 23:28
    Tend the sheep.
  • 23:28 - 23:31
    To feed means just that.
  • 23:31 - 23:33
    Give them the rightful nourishment
  • 23:33 - 23:37
    for spiritual health and growth.
  • 23:37 - 23:40
    So, Peter's sermon at Pentecost
  • 23:40 - 23:43
is the fruit of this exhortation.
  • 23:43 - 23:47
1 and 2 Peter is the fruit
  • 23:47 - 23:49
    of this exhortation:
  • 23:49 - 23:52
Peter, feed My sheep. Care for My lambs.
  • 23:52 - 23:54
Two words used about the sheep here:
  • 23:54 - 23:56
    The first one (sheep)
  • 23:56 - 23:59
is not the older, more mature sheep.
  • 23:59 - 24:02
    It's the younger smaller sheep.
  • 24:02 - 24:06
They're not lambs, but they're younger,
  • 24:06 - 24:07
    smaller sheep.
  • 24:07 - 24:09
Distinct from the older, bigger ones.
  • 24:09 - 24:13
Peter, you are to give special care
  • 24:13 - 24:14
    to the smaller sheep
  • 24:14 - 24:17
    who have growing needs.
  • 24:17 - 24:20
You love Me? You care for
    these smaller sheep.
  • 24:20 - 24:22
    This is the word "lambs."
  • 24:22 - 24:25
My lambs - young, new converts.
  • 24:25 - 24:28
The word is only used in the plural form
  • 24:28 - 24:29
    in the New Testament.
  • 24:29 - 24:31
    These smaller sheep
  • 24:31 - 24:34
and even the little lambs -
  • 24:34 - 24:38
your love for Me involves your heart
  • 24:38 - 24:41
    having endearment to them,
  • 24:41 - 24:44
    tenderness toward them,
  • 24:44 - 24:46
care for them - loving, tender care
  • 24:46 - 24:48
of My sheep and My lambs.
  • 24:48 - 24:54
My young ones are of a
special concern to My heart, Peter.
  • 24:54 - 24:56
    And if you love Me,
  • 24:56 - 24:59
you take care of My sheep.
  • 24:59 - 25:02
I want them on your heart.
  • 25:02 - 25:04
Your love for Me is real and applied
  • 25:04 - 25:07
especially toward the care of My sheep.
  • 25:07 - 25:09
    This says something that's major:
  • 25:09 - 25:11
    Love for the Savior
  • 25:11 - 25:13
    that translates into
    real love for His sheep
  • 25:13 - 25:17
is the first requirement of a pastor.
  • 25:17 - 25:19
    Love for the Savior
  • 25:19 - 25:23
    that translates into real
    love for His sheep
  • 25:23 - 25:26
is the first requirement of a pastor.
  • 25:26 - 25:28
    For every Christian also
  • 25:28 - 25:30
    toward their brethren,
  • 25:30 - 25:32
    because we cannot love God
  • 25:32 - 25:33
    whom we haven't seen,
  • 25:33 - 25:39
if we don't love the brothers
    and sisters we do see.
  • 25:39 - 25:42
    Love Me, Peter!
  • 25:42 - 25:44
    Shepherd My sheep.
  • 25:44 - 25:48
    Third, v. 18-19.
  • 25:48 - 25:50
    Die for Me.
  • 25:50 - 25:53
You're going to die for Me.
  • 25:53 - 25:57
    When you were young,
  • 25:57 - 26:00
you went about wherever you wanted -
  • 26:00 - 26:02
you could go fish, you could come in,
  • 26:02 - 26:04
you could go wherever you want to,
  • 26:04 - 26:06
you were independent, you were free.
  • 26:06 - 26:09
    When you're old, it's going
    to be a different story.
  • 26:09 - 26:11
Others are going to gird you
  • 26:11 - 26:13
and they're going to take you
  • 26:13 - 26:14
where you in the natural realm
  • 26:14 - 26:16
would not want to have to go.
  • 26:16 - 26:19
    They're going to take you
where you don't want to go.
  • 26:19 - 26:21
And John's commentary: This He said
  • 26:21 - 26:23
    signifying to Peter
  • 26:23 - 26:27
what kind of death he was going to die.
  • 26:27 - 26:32
Peter's here called to be a martyr.
  • 26:32 - 26:34
    Peter's crucifixion is affirmed
  • 26:34 - 26:35
    in the early centuries
  • 26:35 - 26:38
    by Eusebius, Tertullian, and others.
  • 26:38 - 26:41
And it's prophesied by Jesus here
  • 26:41 - 26:43
and it's commented on later by Peter
  • 26:43 - 26:45
    in 2 Peter 1:14.
  • 26:45 - 26:48
"Since I know that the putting
off of my body will be soon
  • 26:48 - 26:53
    as our Lord Jesus Christ
    made clear to me."
  • 26:53 - 26:56
In two epistles, Peter is shepherding,
  • 26:56 - 26:58
    feeding, tending to the sheep
  • 26:58 - 27:01
and the lambs in love as his last ministry
  • 27:01 - 27:04
before he knows where he's going.
  • 27:04 - 27:08
Called to die as the Lord died.
  • 27:08 - 27:13
Now we're all called to live unto the Lord
  • 27:13 - 27:18
and we're all called to be willing to die,
  • 27:18 - 27:21
and some will be called to die.
  • 27:21 - 27:27
But whether we live or whether
    we die, we're the Lord's.
  • 27:27 - 27:30
But Peter, this is in your future.
  • 27:30 - 27:35
So love Me, feed My sheep, care for them,
  • 27:35 - 27:40
and then, you're going to die like I died.
  • 27:40 - 27:43
God is glorified in the death of martyrs.
  • 27:43 - 27:47
If you've never read "Fair Sunshine,"
  • 27:47 - 27:49
    get it and read it.
  • 27:49 - 27:50
Two ladies in that book -
  • 27:50 - 27:53
maybe they were both Margaret's -
  • 27:53 - 27:54
    do you remember?
  • 27:54 - 27:57
    One was about 60,
    one was a teenager or 20's -
  • 27:57 - 27:59
    two Margaret's.
  • 27:59 - 28:02
    They were caught
  • 28:02 - 28:06
by the persecuting authorities in Scotland
  • 28:06 - 28:13
    for attending a church
meeting or for owning a Bible.
  • 28:13 - 28:18
They took them out in the sea
  • 28:18 - 28:20
and the chained the older one
  • 28:20 - 28:24
    out in the water
  • 28:24 - 28:26
    so she would be drowned
    first with the tide.
  • 28:26 - 28:31
    They chained the younger one
  • 28:31 - 28:32
in a little more shallow water,
  • 28:32 - 28:34
    but it was strategic -
  • 28:34 - 28:36
so she would have to face
  • 28:36 - 28:42
and see her sister in the faith die first.
  • 28:42 - 28:45
    And they died victoriously.
  • 28:45 - 28:47
    Some are called to die.
  • 28:47 - 28:49
    Peter's called to die here.
  • 28:49 - 28:51
    Love Me.
  • 28:51 - 28:53
    Feed My sheep.
  • 28:53 - 28:54
    Die for Me.
  • 28:54 - 29:00
    Fourthly, verse 22.
  • 29:00 - 29:02
Really, 21, "When Peter saw him
  • 29:02 - 29:04
(that is John) he said to Jesus,
  • 29:04 - 29:05
    'Lord, what about this man?'
  • 29:05 - 29:06
    Jesus said to him,
  • 29:06 - 29:09
'If it's My will that he
    remains until I come,
  • 29:09 - 29:11
what's that to you? Follow Me.'"
  • 29:11 - 29:13
Verse 23, "So the saying spread abroad
  • 29:13 - 29:14
    among the brethren..."
  • 29:14 - 29:17
    Here's bad hermeneutics;
  • 29:17 - 29:21
    here's bad Bible interpretation.
  • 29:21 - 29:23
The saying spread among the brothers
  • 29:23 - 29:26
that this disciple was not going to die.
  • 29:26 - 29:27
    So it went viral.
  • 29:27 - 29:30
Things could go viral in that day too.
  • 29:30 - 29:33
    The saying spread abroad
    among the brethren
  • 29:33 - 29:34
that John wasn't going to die.
  • 29:34 - 29:37
He was going to live till
    the Lord comes back.
  • 29:37 - 29:39
"Yet Jesus did not say to him
  • 29:39 - 29:40
that he was not going to die,
  • 29:40 - 29:44
but He said 'if it's My will
  • 29:44 - 29:47
that he remains until I come,
  • 29:47 - 29:51
    what is that to you?'"
  • 29:51 - 29:56
The fourth truth in being a disciple:
  • 29:56 - 29:59
    Don't misunderstand the Lord's teaching.
  • 29:59 - 30:02
    Don't misunderstand the Bible.
  • 30:02 - 30:05
They were guilty of bad hermeneutics here,
  • 30:05 - 30:10
    wrong interpretation of one statement.
  • 30:10 - 30:15
    And it's amazing that even
    though John clarified this,
  • 30:15 - 30:19
    Augustine even into the
    4th and 5th centuries,
  • 30:19 - 30:22
    Augustine said there were those
  • 30:22 - 30:24
in the Christian world that still believed
  • 30:24 - 30:29
John was somewhere in hiding alive
  • 30:29 - 30:31
    and wasn't dead yet.
  • 30:31 - 30:34
    Heresy is hard to kill.
  • 30:34 - 30:38
Heresy often begins right from Scripture.
  • 30:38 - 30:40
    Deceiving spirits, misinterpretation,
  • 30:40 - 30:43
    misunderstanding of Bible verses,
  • 30:43 - 30:45
    listening out of carnal curiosity
  • 30:45 - 30:47
    to bad teachers.
  • 30:47 - 30:49
    I spoke to a Jehovah's Witness recently,
  • 30:49 - 30:51
    in recent weeks,
  • 30:51 - 30:54
and I said I've got a question for you.
  • 30:54 - 30:55
Why is it that you don't believe
  • 30:55 - 30:57
Jesus was bodily raised from the dead
  • 30:57 - 31:00
    even though the Bible
    clearly shows that He was?
  • 31:00 - 31:03
He was physical. They touched Him.
  • 31:03 - 31:05
    And his answer was this:
  • 31:05 - 31:08
Well, He couldn't have been that
way when He went to heaven.
  • 31:08 - 31:10
    It had to be spiritual
    because the Bible says
  • 31:10 - 31:15
    flesh and blood shall not
    inherit the kingdom of God.
  • 31:15 - 31:19
What a proof text of heresy!
  • 31:19 - 31:26
So we must take heed how we hear.
  • 31:26 - 31:27
We must take heed what we hear.
  • 31:27 - 31:30
    We must understand and understand
  • 31:30 - 31:33
and be clear so as not to be misled
  • 31:33 - 31:35
    or mislead.
  • 31:35 - 31:37
That's why John puts his commentary here
  • 31:37 - 31:41
    so we won't misunderstand
    the Lord's teaching.
  • 31:41 - 31:47
    Fifthly, v. 20-22.
  • 31:47 - 31:49
    The Lord tells Peter:
  • 31:49 - 31:53
Keep your eyes only on Me.
  • 31:53 - 31:55
Now where do you find that?
  • 31:55 - 31:59
    Well, notice what the
    Lord had said to Peter
  • 31:59 - 32:02
at the end of verse 19.
  • 32:02 - 32:04
    "Follow Me."
  • 32:04 - 32:06
Follow Me - but what did Peter do?
  • 32:06 - 32:08
    The next sentence says
  • 32:08 - 32:12
    he turned and saw John.
  • 32:12 - 32:13
The Lord has said, "Follow Me."
  • 32:13 - 32:21
    Peter turns and sees John.
  • 32:21 - 32:26
    Peter is distracted about
    God's will for John.
  • 32:26 - 32:28
Think about it, here's this big context
  • 32:28 - 32:30
of the Lord restoring Peter in love,
  • 32:30 - 32:33
calls him again to shepherd the sheep,
  • 32:33 - 32:37
tells him how he's going to die,
  • 32:37 - 32:41
and then the Lord says, "Follow Me."
  • 32:41 - 32:44
Wouldn't that be enough for now?
  • 32:44 - 32:46
    Well, apparently not,
  • 32:46 - 32:48
because Peter turns and looks at John
  • 32:48 - 32:50
    and says what about him?
  • 32:50 - 32:51
    What about him?
  • 32:51 - 32:53
    Why did Peter do that?
  • 32:53 - 32:55
It may have been if he realizes
  • 32:55 - 32:58
he's going to die, he was close to John,
  • 32:58 - 33:01
he wonders is this his fate too.
  • 33:01 - 33:02
What are You going to do with John?
  • 33:02 - 33:07
    What about John's future?
  • 33:07 - 33:09
    And Jesus in essence said:
  • 33:09 - 33:12
    What about John?
  • 33:12 - 33:16
    Was I talking about John?
  • 33:16 - 33:20
    Is My business about
    John's future your business?
  • 33:20 - 33:22
    Or as we would say:
  • 33:22 - 33:28
    This is on a need-to-know
    basis and guess what?
  • 33:28 - 33:31
    What is that to you?
  • 33:31 - 33:33
    Follow Me.
  • 33:33 - 33:38
See, we're called not to be
    distracted by others,
  • 33:38 - 33:39
    and Christ called us -
  • 33:39 - 33:42
    especially by those we love
  • 33:42 - 33:43
    and are closest to.
  • 33:43 - 33:45
We're not to be distracted by others
  • 33:45 - 33:48
and their calling, God's will for them,
  • 33:48 - 33:50
    their situations.
  • 33:50 - 33:53
    And Peter was distracted
  • 33:53 - 33:55
    with a viewpoint, an attitude,
  • 33:55 - 33:57
    nosiness, meddling, wondering
  • 33:57 - 34:00
about what was not his business.
  • 34:00 - 34:06
How easy is it for people to become
  • 34:06 - 34:12
    a distracting hindrance to
    our single-eyed devotion.
  • 34:12 - 34:15
Our minds can so easily be
  • 34:15 - 34:22
on other's path more than our own path.
  • 34:22 - 34:26
    If John's future was
    Peter's responsibility,
  • 34:26 - 34:29
Jesus would have mentioned it to Peter.
  • 34:29 - 34:30
    He did not say:
  • 34:30 - 34:31
    Peter, here's your new commission.
  • 34:31 - 34:34
Love Me, feed My sheep, die for Me,
  • 34:34 - 34:36
and oh, here's information about John
  • 34:36 - 34:38
because you're responsible for him also.
  • 34:38 - 34:40
    He didn't say that.
  • 34:40 - 34:43
    Jesus restores the fallen Peter,
  • 34:43 - 34:45
    reaffirms his calling,
  • 34:45 - 34:52
and has to rebuke the nosy Peter.
  • 34:52 - 34:55
Peter should leave all distractions alone
  • 34:55 - 34:56
    because they weren't his.
  • 34:56 - 34:58
    What is that to you?
  • 34:58 - 34:59
What business is that of yours?
  • 34:59 - 35:03
And how often do we need to hear this?
  • 35:03 - 35:05
Well, I don't think that church over there
  • 35:05 - 35:07
    is quite doing right.
  • 35:07 - 35:09
    What's that to you?
  • 35:09 - 35:10
    You follow Christ.
  • 35:10 - 35:13
    Well, I don't think they
    have the right view
  • 35:13 - 35:15
of which translation of the Bible to use.
  • 35:15 - 35:17
What's that? That's none of your business.
  • 35:17 - 35:19
    You follow Christ.
  • 35:19 - 35:21
Well, I think they're too young
  • 35:21 - 35:25
to be going to the mission field.
  • 35:25 - 35:30
How much are we carnally curious
  • 35:30 - 35:33
    about other people's issues
  • 35:33 - 35:36
    when we haven't even
    fully dealt with our own
  • 35:36 - 35:39
and we aren't fully obeying Christ
  • 35:39 - 35:46
as to what He's shown us to do?
  • 35:46 - 35:50
    Jesus declines to
    satisfy Peter's curiosity.
  • 35:50 - 35:52
It is no business of Peter's
  • 35:52 - 35:55
what's going to happen to John.
  • 35:55 - 35:57
    Even if the Lord wills
    for John to stay alive
  • 35:57 - 35:58
    even to His return,
  • 35:58 - 36:02
why would Peter even need to know that?
  • 36:02 - 36:03
    He doesn't need to know.
  • 36:03 - 36:05
    He doesn't need to know
    anything about John.
  • 36:05 - 36:06
How much do we need to know
  • 36:06 - 36:08
about God's purpose and will for others?
  • 36:08 - 36:11
    Even those we're closest to?
  • 36:11 - 36:13
How much do we really need to know?
  • 36:13 - 36:16
Elders and pastors need to know.
  • 36:16 - 36:19
Church leaders need to know more,
  • 36:19 - 36:21
    oftentimes for the protection.
  • 36:21 - 36:23
    But generally speaking,
  • 36:23 - 36:25
how much do we need to know
  • 36:25 - 36:29
    about God's business
    in other people's lives?
  • 36:29 - 36:34
    What is that to you,
    O thou nosy Christian?
  • 36:34 - 36:36
    Mind your own business.
  • 36:36 - 36:40
    Keep to your own stuff.
  • 36:40 - 36:42
You know, one of the greatest examples
  • 36:42 - 36:45
    of this mistake is Josiah.
  • 36:45 - 36:48
He reigned 31 years in Jerusalem.
  • 36:48 - 36:49
He became king when he was 8 years old.
  • 36:49 - 36:51
At 16 years old, the Bible says
  • 36:51 - 36:53
he began to seek the Lord seriously.
  • 36:53 - 36:55
He began to seek the God of David.
  • 36:55 - 36:57
    And he began purging Jerusalem
  • 36:57 - 37:00
    of idols and carved images.
  • 37:00 - 37:03
One of the best kings in Israel's history.
  • 37:03 - 37:07
And 2 Kings and 2 Chronicles
    gives his record.
  • 37:07 - 37:08
He kept the Passover in Jerusalem.
  • 37:08 - 37:11
He appointed priests to their offices
  • 37:11 - 37:14
    and encouraged them in the
service of the house of God.
  • 37:14 - 37:16
He put the ark in the temple
  • 37:16 - 37:17
    that Solomon built.
  • 37:17 - 37:19
He cut down the altars of Baal.
  • 37:19 - 37:21
    And he was present himself
  • 37:21 - 37:25
when his men cut those altars to Baal down
  • 37:25 - 37:27
    the Bible says.
  • 37:27 - 37:29
He told the priests: Consecrate yourselves
  • 37:29 - 37:31
and prepare for your brothers to do
  • 37:31 - 37:33
    according to the Word
    of the Lord by Moses.
  • 37:33 - 37:35
The singers, the sons of Asaph,
  • 37:35 - 37:39
were under Josiah's leadership in Israel.
  • 37:39 - 37:41
    And the Bible says,
  • 37:41 - 37:43
    "...No Passover like it had
    been kept in Israel
  • 37:43 - 37:46
since the days of Samuel the prophet."
  • 37:46 - 37:50
    2 Chronicles 35 summarizes Josiah's life.
  • 37:50 - 37:52
The rest of the acts of Josiah
  • 37:52 - 37:54
    and his good deeds
  • 37:54 - 37:56
are written in the book of the kings.
  • 37:56 - 37:58
    But you know what?
  • 37:58 - 38:00
    You remember his major misstep.
  • 38:00 - 38:03
One big misstep cost him his life.
  • 38:03 - 38:06
    He didn't apostatize
    and worship the Baals.
  • 38:06 - 38:07
    He didn't love like Solomon
  • 38:07 - 38:09
loved a bunch of strange women
  • 38:09 - 38:12
and let them pull his heart away
  • 38:12 - 38:15
to false gods like Solomon did.
  • 38:15 - 38:18
    What did Josiah do?
  • 38:18 - 38:21
He didn't mind his own business.
  • 38:21 - 38:25
    He began meddling in
    affairs that weren't his.
  • 38:25 - 38:27
He began to pick a fight with a dog,
  • 38:27 - 38:30
but the dog didn't want to fight him.
  • 38:30 - 38:31
    But he picked the fight
  • 38:31 - 38:34
and the dog had to fight him.
  • 38:34 - 38:36
    2 Chronicles says after
    Josiah prepared the temple,
  • 38:36 - 38:39
he heard about Neco, the king of Egypt,
  • 38:39 - 38:40
who was going to war with someone
  • 38:40 - 38:44
    over near the Euphrates River.
  • 38:44 - 38:49
    And it's not Josiah's business;
    it's not his battle.
  • 38:49 - 38:51
He doesn't have a bone to pick.
  • 38:51 - 38:54
Israel's welfare is not at stake.
  • 38:54 - 38:58
But he couldn't leave it alone.
  • 38:58 - 39:01
Josiah goes out to meet Neco
  • 39:01 - 39:04
    basically to pick a fight
  • 39:04 - 39:06
when Neco wasn't coming to Israel.
  • 39:06 - 39:10
    And the Bible says, "Neco
    sent messengers to Josiah,"
  • 39:10 - 39:13
and said this: What do we
have to do with you, O king?
  • 39:13 - 39:15
What do we have to do with each other?
  • 39:15 - 39:17
I'm not coming against you this day
  • 39:17 - 39:18
    but someone else.
  • 39:18 - 39:21
Listen, I'm in a hurry. Stop!
  • 39:21 - 39:23
    Because God is with me,
  • 39:23 - 39:28
    lest He destroy you.
  • 39:28 - 39:30
    And here was Josiah's mistake:
  • 39:30 - 39:31
    The Bible says, "Nevertheless,
  • 39:31 - 39:34
Josiah did not turn away from him."
  • 39:34 - 39:37
He did not listen to the words of Neco
  • 39:37 - 39:40
    from the mouth of God,
  • 39:40 - 39:42
but instead he came to fight,
  • 39:42 - 39:44
    and the archer shot Josiah
  • 39:44 - 39:46
and he died and was buried.
  • 39:46 - 39:47
And the Bible says all Jerusalem
  • 39:47 - 39:50
and all Judah mourned for Josiah
  • 39:50 - 39:52
    and Jeremiah the prophet
  • 39:52 - 39:56
    lamented his death.
  • 39:56 - 39:58
    Neco was saying:
  • 39:58 - 40:01
    What is that to you?
  • 40:01 - 40:02
    You worship Jehovah.
  • 40:02 - 40:05
    What is that to you?
    This isn't your fight.
  • 40:05 - 40:07
You're not called to meddle here.
  • 40:07 - 40:10
    Watch meddling.
  • 40:10 - 40:13
    A dear favorite preacher
    of mine said one time:
  • 40:13 - 40:14
    Watch out for meddling.
  • 40:14 - 40:16
Don't meddle in what's not your business.
  • 40:16 - 40:18
    Don't be concerned about stuff
  • 40:18 - 40:20
that's not for you to fix.
  • 40:20 - 40:22
    You follow Christ.
  • 40:22 - 40:24
    You stay focused on Him
  • 40:24 - 40:25
    and don't let people -
  • 40:25 - 40:27
even those you love the most -
  • 40:27 - 40:30
    distract you from steadfast,
  • 40:30 - 40:32
    single-eyed obedience.
  • 40:32 - 40:35
What is that to you, Peter?
  • 40:35 - 40:37
    You follow Me.
  • 40:37 - 40:41
    And that's the final thing
    the Lord said to him.
  • 40:41 - 40:42
    Not only: Love Me,
  • 40:42 - 40:43
    feed My sheep,
  • 40:43 - 40:46
    die for Me,
  • 40:46 - 40:47
    mind your own business,
  • 40:47 - 40:49
    but "Follow Me."
  • 40:49 - 40:51
And the Lord says it twice here:
  • 40:51 - 40:52
    Follow Me.
  • 40:52 - 40:54
And then at the end He says,
  • 40:54 - 40:57
    "You follow Me."
  • 40:57 - 40:59
    Just follow Me.
  • 40:59 - 41:01
    Love Me,
  • 41:01 - 41:02
    care for My sheep,
  • 41:02 - 41:04
follow Me, feed them, love them,
  • 41:04 - 41:05
    watch out for them,
  • 41:05 - 41:08
don't let anyone mess with My bride,
  • 41:08 - 41:12
    shepherd My sheep.
  • 41:12 - 41:14
    Follow Me.
  • 41:14 - 41:17
And in closing, let's just think about
  • 41:17 - 41:20
    a couple of thoughts here.
  • 41:20 - 41:23
    First lesson is this:
  • 41:23 - 41:27
    Restoration for a backslider -
  • 41:27 - 41:30
    restoration for a failed disciple.
  • 41:30 - 41:33
    Restoration and not defeat
  • 41:33 - 41:36
is Christ's purpose for every one of us.
  • 41:36 - 41:38
    You may have come here
  • 41:38 - 41:41
out of a recent fall, out of defeat.
  • 41:41 - 41:45
    Maybe for months, you've
    been in bad state.
  • 41:45 - 41:47
    Disappointments, failures,
  • 41:47 - 41:50
    secret things.
  • 41:50 - 41:53
The Lord Jesus Christ says to you
  • 41:53 - 41:55
    this morning in your condition:
  • 41:55 - 41:59
    Love Me!
  • 41:59 - 42:02
    I want your heart's love.
  • 42:02 - 42:03
    Love Me.
  • 42:03 - 42:05
    Forget the past.
  • 42:05 - 42:08
    I'll clean you up.
  • 42:08 - 42:10
I'm going to have those shepherd you,
  • 42:10 - 42:11
    care for you.
  • 42:11 - 42:12
You may be the weakest lamb.
  • 42:12 - 42:14
Just love Me. That's where you start.
  • 42:14 - 42:17
    Just love Him.
  • 42:17 - 42:19
    Just love Him.
  • 42:19 - 42:21
    Restoration, and not defeat,
  • 42:21 - 42:25
is God's purpose for every child of God -
  • 42:25 - 42:26
    the younger sheep
  • 42:26 - 42:29
    down to the weakest lamb.
  • 42:29 - 42:32
    Secondly, failures don't disqualify you
  • 42:32 - 42:36
    necessarily from future growth
  • 42:36 - 42:38
    and future ministry.
  • 42:38 - 42:41
    Some failures will put people
  • 42:41 - 42:44
    properly out of the ministry.
  • 42:44 - 42:48
    But that's a small category, isn't it.
  • 42:48 - 42:51
But failures - the worst of them -
  • 42:51 - 42:53
    don't disqualify you
  • 42:53 - 42:56
from being restored in the love of Christ,
  • 42:56 - 42:57
    from following Him,
  • 42:57 - 43:00
and being a blessing to love others
  • 43:00 - 43:03
    because you love Him.
  • 43:03 - 43:07
    Thirdly, it's the Gospel alone,
  • 43:07 - 43:10
the love of Christ alone for His own
  • 43:10 - 43:14
that is the healing remedy for anyone
  • 43:14 - 43:17
    who has fallen.
  • 43:17 - 43:20
    Backslider, I'll say what
    Spurgeon said one time.
  • 43:20 - 43:22
He lifted up his voice and said
  • 43:22 - 43:24
    there's a backslider here today.
  • 43:24 - 43:26
    Come back home.
  • 43:26 - 43:27
And I say that to you today.
  • 43:27 - 43:33
    Backslider, love Him.
  • 43:33 - 43:36
    Follow Him.
  • 43:36 - 43:40
How deep the Father's love for us!
  • 43:40 - 43:48
Oh, the deep, deep love of Jesus.
  • 43:48 - 43:50
    Let's sing that.
