Jesus Restores Peter - Mack Tomlinson

  • Not Synced
    John 21.
  • Not Synced
I want to speak this morning,
  • Not Synced
    the Lord helping me,
  • Not Synced
    on Jesus restores Peter.
  • Not Synced
    Jesus restores Peter.
  • Not Synced
    John 21:15-23.
  • Not Synced
    Lord, help us now.
  • Not Synced
    John 21:15-23.
  • Not Synced
"And when they had finished breakfast,
  • Not Synced
    Jesus said to Simon Peter,
  • Not Synced
    'Simon, son of John,
  • Not Synced
do you love Me more than these?'
  • Not Synced
    He said to Him,
  • Not Synced
'Yes Lord, You know that I love You.'
  • Not Synced
He said to him, 'Feed My lambs.'
  • Not Synced
He said to him a second time,
  • Not Synced
'Simon, son of John, do you love Me?'
  • Not Synced
    He said to Him,
  • Not Synced
'Yes Lord, You know that I love You.'
  • Not Synced
    He said to him,
  • Not Synced
    'Tend My sheep.'
  • Not Synced
He said to him a third time,
  • Not Synced
'Simon, son of John, do you love Me?'
  • Not Synced
    Peter was grieved
  • Not Synced
because He said to him the third time,
  • Not Synced
    'Do you love Me?'
  • Not Synced
    And he said to Him,
  • Not Synced
    'Lord, You know everything.
  • Not Synced
You know that I love You.'
  • Not Synced
    Jesus said to him,
  • Not Synced
    'Feed My sheep.
  • Not Synced
    Surely I say to you,
  • Not Synced
    when you were young,
  • Not Synced
    you used to dress yourself
  • Not Synced
    and walk wherever you wanted,
  • Not Synced
    but when you are old,
  • Not Synced
you will stretch out your hands
  • Not Synced
    and another will dress you
  • Not Synced
    and carry you where
you do not want to go.'
  • Not Synced
This He said to show by what kind of death
  • Not Synced
he (that is Peter) was to glorify God.
  • Not Synced
And after saying this, He said to him,
  • Not Synced
    'Follow Me.'
  • Not Synced
    Peter turned and saw the
    disciple whom Jesus loved
  • Not Synced
    following them,
  • Not Synced
    the one who had been
reclining at table close to Him,
  • Not Synced
    who had said, 'Lord,
who it that will betray you?'
  • Not Synced
when Peter saw him, he said to Jesus,
  • Not Synced
    'Lord, what about this man?'
  • Not Synced
    Jesus said to him,
  • Not Synced
'If it is My will that he
    remain until I come,
  • Not Synced
    what is that to you?
  • Not Synced
    You follow Me.'
  • Not Synced
    So the saying spread abroad
    among the brothers
  • Not Synced
that this disciple was not to die.
  • Not Synced
Yet, Jesus did not say to him
  • Not Synced
that he was not to die,
  • Not Synced
but if it is My will that he
    remains until I come,
  • Not Synced
    what is that to you?"
  • Not Synced
    During the 40 days
  • Not Synced
    between the resurrection
    and the ascension of Christ,
  • Not Synced
    where was Jesus?
  • Not Synced
Well, He was not as commonly thought
  • Not Synced
    on earth continually for
    40 days in Jerusalem.
  • Not Synced
    He's now after the resurrection
    what has been called
  • Not Synced
    the Heavenly Man in Paradise.
  • Not Synced
And He will now over 40 days
  • Not Synced
make appearances in and around Jerusalem.
  • Not Synced
    He appears to many.
  • Not Synced
    That is, He surprised
    unannounced appearances.
  • Not Synced
He just pops into locked rooms.
  • Not Synced
He just suddenly appears here and there.
  • Not Synced
Two guys walking on the Emmaus road,
  • Not Synced
    grieving, sharing,
  • Not Synced
    suddenly this Stranger appears,
  • Not Synced
    starts walking with them -
  • Not Synced
    He's making appearances.
  • Not Synced
    Resurrection appearances.
  • Not Synced
The Gospels say that when they
  • Not Synced
were in the upper room at one point,
  • Not Synced
He came and stood among them.
  • Not Synced
    How many appearances were there?
  • Not Synced
    After the resurrection,
    before the ascension?
  • Not Synced
Well, 14 are mentioned in the Gospels,
  • Not Synced
in the book of Acts, Galatians,
  • Not Synced
    and 1 Corinthians 15.
  • Not Synced
    Different days and different times
  • Not Synced
    the Lord appeared.
  • Not Synced
    First to Mary Magdalene,
  • Not Synced
    second to some women
    returning from the tomb,
  • Not Synced
    third to Peter, fourth appearance
  • Not Synced
was to the two on the Emmaus road,
  • Not Synced
    fifth appearance was
    to 10 of the disciples
  • Not Synced
    in the upper room,
  • Not Synced
the sixth appearance was 11 of them -
  • Not Synced
    remember Thomas wasn't
    there the first time -
  • Not Synced
11 disciples in the upper room,
  • Not Synced
    the seventh appearance
is this one - John 21.
  • Not Synced
    The disciples fishing on
    the Sea of Tiberius.
  • Not Synced
This is here in John 21.
  • Not Synced
    And there are six more,
  • Not Synced
    including appearances to James,
  • Not Synced
    Stephen, Saul of Tarsus,
  • Not Synced
and John on the isle of Patmos.
  • Not Synced
    And then the biggest group
  • Not Synced
    Paul interestingly mentions
    in 1 Corinthians 15,
  • Not Synced
how the Lord appeared to over 500
  • Not Synced
    at one time.
  • Not Synced
So here in John 21 is His 7th appearance
  • Not Synced
    where the disciples are fishing,
  • Not Synced
    they've gone fishing.
  • Not Synced
    And virtually all of this
    chapter of John 21
  • Not Synced
    records this appearance,
  • Not Synced
    this event, this experience
  • Not Synced
of the Lord with the disciples
  • Not Synced
    and particularly with Peter.
  • Not Synced
The entire scene - He comes to all of them
  • Not Synced
and He's on the shore, they're fishing,
  • Not Synced
    He says come, let's have
    breakfast together.
  • Not Synced
And they recognize that it's the Lord.
  • Not Synced
So this account is about Him
  • Not Synced
    appearing to all of them,
  • Not Synced
but then He's got His eye
  • Not Synced
    particularly on one of them.
  • Not Synced
And the entire scene is especially meant
  • Not Synced
    to restore Peter fully,
  • Not Synced
    where Peter knows it -
  • Not Synced
and not only where he knows it,
  • Not Synced
    where he feels it
  • Not Synced
    and he experiences full restoration.
  • Not Synced
You know, I'm a baseball fan.
  • Not Synced
My son was a good baseball player,
  • Not Synced
    and Philip Neeley and I,
  • Not Synced
    we have an annual trip
  • Not Synced
to watch one pro baseball game.
  • Not Synced
    I enjoy baseball.
  • Not Synced
We usually talk more about the Gospel
  • Not Synced
    and the kingdom
  • Not Synced
    than we do watching baseball,
  • Not Synced
    but I like baseball.
  • Not Synced
A triple in baseball is more rare
  • Not Synced
    even than a home run.
  • Not Synced
Well, Peter had a triple denial of Jesus.
  • Not Synced
And remember he went out and did what?
  • Not Synced
    He wept bitterly.
  • Not Synced
If you documented all of Peter's
  • Not Synced
    major responses to the
    Lord Jesus in 3 years,
  • Not Synced
where he was right or he was wrong,
  • Not Synced
or he was victorious or he was a failure,
  • Not Synced
at the calming of the sea in the boat,
  • Not Synced
    his response was:
  • Not Synced
    "Depart from me, Lord,
  • Not Synced
for I am a sinful man."
  • Not Synced
    That's a victory.
  • Not Synced
    That's a right response.
  • Not Synced
    And then he says later
  • Not Synced
    when the Lord asked him:
  • Not Synced
"Who do men say that I am?"
  • Not Synced
    "Peter, what about you?"
  • Not Synced
    "You are the Christ, the
    Son of the living God."
  • Not Synced
    Victory.
  • Not Synced
    Right.
  • Not Synced
    "Flesh and blood have
    not revealed this to you.
  • Not Synced
My Father in heaven revealed this to you."
  • Not Synced
    And then, Peter turns around
  • Not Synced
    this same hour when the
    Lord has told them plainly
  • Not Synced
    He's going to be rejected,
  • Not Synced
He's going to suffer and die.
  • Not Synced
Peter takes Him aside, and Mark says
  • Not Synced
that Peter began to rebuke Him.
  • Not Synced
    And the Lord interrupts
    him and rebukes him
  • Not Synced
and says, "Get behind Me, Satan!"
  • Not Synced
    Failure.
  • Not Synced
    Peter's failure.
  • Not Synced
    Walking on the water,
  • Not Synced
    sinking in unbelief.
  • Not Synced
    Failure.
  • Not Synced
Discussing who's going to be the greatest.
  • Not Synced
    Failure.
  • Not Synced
    Self-confidently affirming:
  • Not Synced
"I will never fail. I will never deny You.
  • Not Synced
Even if everyone else does, I will not."
  • Not Synced
    Failure.
  • Not Synced
    He denies the Lord three
    times with an oath,
  • Not Synced
    failure, failure, failure.
  • Not Synced
Seven of these nine times were failures,
  • Not Synced
    like a necklace that you
    might have stringed together -
  • Not Synced
    two nice pearls with seven
    ugly thorns on the necklace.
  • Not Synced
    Well, the pearls are nice
    and they're wonderful,
  • Not Synced
but it would be better if there
    weren't the ugly thorns, right?
  • Not Synced
What would that final massive failure
  • Not Synced
of denial do to Peter's heart?
  • Not Synced
And where did it leave him spiritually?
  • Not Synced
    We don't know.
  • Not Synced
    The Gospel writers don't
    give us an insight.
  • Not Synced
    They don't give us details.
  • Not Synced
    They don't give us Peter's
    testimony about it.
  • Not Synced
But what happens in the heart and mind
  • Not Synced
and emotions and in the soul
  • Not Synced
of a believer who stumbles so much?
  • Not Synced
    Who fails?
  • Not Synced
    Who in weak moments
  • Not Synced
    makes wrong choices?
  • Not Synced
    And is not even themselves?
  • Not Synced
    And they sin so miserably?
  • Not Synced
You know, if the other disciples
  • Not Synced
had been around the fire that night
  • Not Synced
    with Peter warming himself
  • Not Synced
    and had heard Peter,
  • Not Synced
they would have all been shocked.
