Do not Love the World | Discerning the Church of Wells

  • 0:01 - 0:03
    In 1 John 2
  • 0:03 - 0:05
there is a very important Scripture
  • 0:05 - 0:07
    with regard to the believer.
  • 0:07 - 0:08
    It's in verse 15.
  • 0:08 - 0:10
He says, "Do not love the world,
  • 0:10 - 0:12
nor the things in the world.
  • 0:12 - 0:13
    If anyone loves the world,
  • 0:13 - 0:16
the love of the Father is not in him.
  • 0:16 - 0:17
All that is in the world,
  • 0:17 - 0:20
the lust of the flesh and
    the lust of the eyes
  • 0:20 - 0:21
and the boastful pride of life
  • 0:21 - 0:23
    is not from the Father,
  • 0:23 - 0:25
    but is from the world.
  • 0:25 - 0:26
    The world is passing away,
  • 0:26 - 0:27
    and also its lusts,
  • 0:27 - 0:30
but the one who does the will of God
  • 0:30 - 0:32
    lives forever."
  • 0:32 - 0:34
Now, what does it mean to love the world?
  • 0:34 - 0:37
Well, first of all, we need to
    define what the world is.
  • 0:37 - 0:39
The world has to do with
  • 0:39 - 0:44
all that stands contrary to the
  • 0:44 - 0:48
    revealed will of God.
  • 0:48 - 0:51
Now, also it says that the world
    is passing away,
  • 0:51 - 0:52
so there is a way in which we can
  • 0:52 - 0:55
    also add an extra definition,
  • 0:55 - 0:57
but we have to be very, very careful.
  • 0:57 - 0:59
    And that is this,
  • 0:59 - 1:00
    the world is also something
  • 1:00 - 1:02
    that is temporal.
  • 1:02 - 1:05
So the world is, first of all,
  • 1:05 - 1:08
    that which is contrary
    to the will of God,
  • 1:08 - 1:11
    and secondly, it has the
    aspect of temporal.
  • 1:11 - 1:14
So in order to know what the world is,
  • 1:14 - 1:16
we need to study the Scriptures.
  • 1:16 - 1:22
    And we find those things
    which God is against.
  • 1:22 - 1:25
    Those ideas, those attitudes,
  • 1:25 - 1:29
    those actions, those words,
  • 1:29 - 1:32
    that are simply opposed
    to God's Scripture.
  • 1:32 - 1:35
That is one aspect of the world.
  • 1:35 - 1:40
Now, there are some people who are
  • 1:40 - 1:42
very serious about walking with the Lord,
  • 1:42 - 1:43
and I praise God for them.
  • 1:43 - 1:45
And they look at Scripture and they say,
  • 1:45 - 1:48
    God is against this,
I'm not going to do it.
  • 1:48 - 1:50
    God's against that,
I'm not going to do it.
  • 1:50 - 1:52
    And that's good.
  • 1:52 - 1:54
But then they also get to this aspect
  • 1:54 - 1:56
of this thing is passing away,
  • 1:56 - 1:59
    so it must be worldly.
  • 1:59 - 2:01
And that's a little bit dangerous.
  • 2:01 - 2:02
    Why?
  • 2:02 - 2:05
    There are many things
    that are passing away,
  • 2:05 - 2:07
    that are not necessarily evil.
  • 2:07 - 2:08
Let me give you an example.
  • 2:08 - 2:10
    My body is passing away.
  • 2:10 - 2:12
    That doesn't make it evil.
  • 2:12 - 2:15
    The sunset I saw this
    morning is passing away.
  • 2:15 - 2:18
But that doesn't necessarily make it evil.
  • 2:18 - 2:21
Even my marriage with my lovely wife
  • 2:21 - 2:23
    is passing away.
  • 2:23 - 2:26
But that doesn't make it outside of
  • 2:26 - 2:29
or opposed to the will of God.
  • 2:29 - 2:32
It seems like there's always two extremes
  • 2:32 - 2:34
    in the Christian life.
  • 2:34 - 2:35
Do you know what I mean?
  • 2:35 - 2:37
    Someone who does not
    take the commands
  • 2:37 - 2:38
    of God seriously,
  • 2:38 - 2:40
    and simply just living continuously
  • 2:40 - 2:42
    like an unbeliever.
  • 2:42 - 2:44
And then there's the person who
  • 2:44 - 2:46
    takes God's commandments seriously.
  • 2:46 - 2:48
    But becomes monkish,
  • 2:48 - 2:51
    becomes separated from life.
  • 2:51 - 2:55
Becomes separated from many of the things
  • 2:55 - 2:57
    that are manifestations of God's
  • 2:57 - 3:00
    common grace in this world.
  • 3:00 - 3:02
A holy man isn't someone who
  • 3:02 - 3:04
    just goes to church.
  • 3:04 - 3:07
Isn't someone who just reads his Bible,
  • 3:07 - 3:09
    or just prays.
  • 3:09 - 3:11
A holy man is someone who is
  • 3:11 - 3:14
    involved actively in relationships;
  • 3:14 - 3:18
    It's someone that can
    look at all the grace
  • 3:18 - 3:20
that God has given us in this life,
  • 3:20 - 3:23
    whether it's marriage or children
  • 3:23 - 3:26
    or friends or even food,
  • 3:26 - 3:29
    or creation.
  • 3:29 - 3:32
So many experiences God has given us
  • 3:32 - 3:34
that are manifestations of His grace.
  • 3:34 - 3:37
And so many people deny those things.
  • 3:37 - 3:38
    They're opposed to them;
  • 3:38 - 3:39
    they hate them,
  • 3:39 - 3:43
    when actually, they are good
    gifts of God.
  • 3:43 - 3:47
One of the things that I would say is that
  • 3:47 - 3:50
if you're just like the unbelieving world,
  • 3:50 - 3:51
    you're in trouble.
  • 3:51 - 3:53
    You're worldly.
  • 3:53 - 3:54
    On the other hand,
  • 3:54 - 3:57
if your desire to obey God has
  • 3:57 - 4:00
    just separated you from almost
  • 4:00 - 4:03
everything in life, even the good things,
  • 4:03 - 4:06
and is gradually taking more and more
  • 4:06 - 4:09
    of your joy away,
  • 4:09 - 4:11
    and making you severe
  • 4:11 - 4:13
    and loveless and critical,
  • 4:13 - 4:16
you've got a problem on the other side.
  • 4:16 - 4:19
The Christian is someone who is not
  • 4:19 - 4:22
    bound by things.
  • 4:22 - 4:25
Not even bound by the good things of God.
  • 4:25 - 4:27
And yet at the same time,
  • 4:27 - 4:28
    knows how to enjoy them
  • 4:28 - 4:30
    and delight in them.
  • 4:30 - 4:33
    One of the things that
    I'm so worried about
  • 4:33 - 4:36
    often because of the
    way I preach sometimes.
  • 4:36 - 4:39
There's a need to point out sin,
  • 4:39 - 4:41
but you need to realize that
  • 4:41 - 4:43
that which is life is not sin.
  • 4:43 - 4:45
There's so much good in this world.
  • 4:45 - 4:48
    So many things to enjoy.
  • 4:48 - 4:52
I'm overwhelmed at the goodness of God.
  • 4:52 - 4:54
One time, years and years ago,
  • 4:54 - 4:56
    someone told me this and
    I'll never forget it.
  • 4:56 - 4:57
    They said, "Paul,
  • 4:57 - 5:00
    God put leaves on trees.
  • 5:00 - 5:05
He didn't put religious tracts on trees."
  • 5:05 - 5:07
    And what they were trying
    to teach me was this,
  • 5:07 - 5:11
    Paul, just because it
    doesn't have the title
  • 5:11 - 5:13
of being religious or even Christian,
  • 5:13 - 5:17
    doesn't make it evil.
  • 5:17 - 5:18
And I've taken that to heart,
  • 5:18 - 5:20
because I see that it's biblical.
  • 5:20 - 5:23
    I enjoy my friends.
  • 5:23 - 5:25
I enjoy even my interactions with
  • 5:25 - 5:27
    many, many lost people that
  • 5:27 - 5:28
I want to win to the Lord.
  • 5:28 - 5:30
The times that I've had with them,
  • 5:30 - 5:31
    the conversations,
  • 5:31 - 5:33
even the laughter I've had with them.
  • 5:33 - 5:35
    I enjoy nature.
  • 5:35 - 5:38
    I enjoy hiking and kayaking.
  • 5:38 - 5:41
    I enjoy laughter,
  • 5:41 - 5:43
and even though I may get
    in trouble on this one,
  • 5:43 - 5:46
I enjoy grabbing my wife in the kitchen
  • 5:46 - 5:48
and doing a dance through the living room
  • 5:48 - 5:50
as my children are all applauding
  • 5:50 - 5:52
    and laughing.
  • 5:52 - 5:54
One of the things also if you're a parent,
  • 5:54 - 5:55
    I want to say this,
  • 5:55 - 5:57
you know there are so many evils
  • 5:57 - 5:59
    out there for our children,
  • 5:59 - 6:00
and we have to guard them
  • 6:00 - 6:02
    from those things,
  • 6:02 - 6:03
    but here's something else,
  • 6:03 - 6:05
you need to replace those things
  • 6:05 - 6:06
    with something good.
  • 6:06 - 6:09
If all you ever do is take away the world
  • 6:09 - 6:11
    from your children,
  • 6:11 - 6:13
but you do not allow them to experience
  • 6:13 - 6:16
the good graces that God has given us
  • 6:16 - 6:19
    throughout this planet,
  • 6:19 - 6:21
then you're going to create either
  • 6:21 - 6:24
    a religious hypocrite,
  • 6:24 - 6:26
    or someone who will eventually
  • 6:26 - 6:28
    turn away from the faith,
  • 6:28 - 6:30
or someone who is severe and
  • 6:30 - 6:32
    loveless and legalistic.
  • 6:32 - 6:34
And we don't need any of those things.
  • 6:34 - 6:37
    Godliness is not removing yourself
  • 6:37 - 6:41
to live on some 40 acre farm in Kansas
  • 6:41 - 6:43
so that the world doesn't touch you.
  • 6:43 - 6:46
Godliness is living on this planet,
  • 6:46 - 6:48
    interacting with Christians
  • 6:48 - 6:49
    and unbelievers.
  • 6:49 - 6:52
    Seeing all the wonderful
    things from prayer
  • 6:52 - 6:54
    to Bible study to fasting
  • 6:54 - 6:57
to walking down a country lane,
  • 6:57 - 6:59
    to poetry.
  • 6:59 - 7:02
    It's being able to take
    in all these things,
  • 7:02 - 7:03
    and to appreciate them
  • 7:03 - 7:04
    while at the same time
  • 7:04 - 7:07
    loving the Lord your God
    with all your heart,
  • 7:07 - 7:08
    soul, mind, and strength
  • 7:08 - 7:10
and seeing that all these good gifts
  • 7:10 - 7:12
    come from Him.
