Christ and Adam: Comparing and Contrasting - Kevin Williams

  • 0:00 - 0:06
    Adam is a type -
a foreshadow - of Jesus Christ.
  • 0:06 - 0:09
Like in the hymn we sing at Christmastime,
  • 0:09 - 0:11
    "Hark, the herald angels sing..."
  • 0:11 - 0:14
    It refers to Christ there
    as the second Adam -
  • 0:14 - 0:17
    the second Adam from above.
  • 0:17 - 0:19
    Listen to this.
  • 0:19 - 0:21
Listen to the contrast and comparisons
  • 0:21 - 0:23
    between the first Adam
  • 0:23 - 0:26
whom God created in the Garden of Eden -
  • 0:26 - 0:29
the first man who was a foreshadow
  • 0:29 - 0:32
of the second Adam or the last Man,
  • 0:32 - 0:34
    the Lord Jesus Christ.
  • 0:34 - 0:38
    Listen to the contrast
    and comparisons here.
  • 0:38 - 0:41
    The first Adam was created
  • 0:41 - 0:43
in the image and the likeness of God,
  • 0:43 - 0:45
whereas the last Adam - Jesus Christ -
  • 0:45 - 0:49
is the image of the invisible God.
  • 0:49 - 0:52
The first Adam rebelled in the garden
  • 0:52 - 0:55
and puts himself in the place of God,
  • 0:55 - 0:57
whereas the second Adam - Jesus Christ -
  • 0:57 - 0:59
was God, but in order to save us,
  • 0:59 - 1:03
He puts Himself in the place of man.
  • 1:03 - 1:06
The first Adam, before he fell,
  • 1:06 - 1:09
he did not toil nor sweat.
  • 1:09 - 1:12
Then, toil and sweat were given to him
  • 1:12 - 1:15
as part of the judgment for sin.
  • 1:15 - 1:17
Whereas the second Adam - Jesus Christ -
  • 1:17 - 1:19
    in the Garden of Gethsemane,
  • 1:19 - 1:21
He labored and toiled for us in prayer
  • 1:21 - 1:26
and sweat great drops of blood.
  • 1:26 - 1:28
The first Adam was given thorns
  • 1:28 - 1:30
    as part of the curse.
  • 1:30 - 1:33
The second Adam - Jesus Christ -
  • 1:33 - 1:37
wore a crown of thorns bearing our curse.
  • 1:37 - 1:39
The first Adam in the garden
  • 1:39 - 1:42
    sinned at a tree.
  • 1:42 - 1:43
    Jesus Christ, the second Adam,
  • 1:43 - 1:46
He bore our sins hanging upon a tree -
  • 1:46 - 1:49
upon the wood of the cross.
  • 1:49 - 1:53
The first Adam was naked and not ashamed.
  • 1:53 - 1:55
The second Adam - Jesus Christ -
  • 1:55 - 1:59
was naked on the cross and bore our shame.
  • 1:59 - 2:03
    The first Adam was looking
for a bride suitable for him.
  • 2:03 - 2:05
The second Adam - Jesus Christ -
  • 2:05 - 2:07
has come seeking His bride -
  • 2:07 - 2:09
    the believers, you.
  • 2:09 - 2:11
    The first Adam died
  • 2:11 - 2:14
because he was a guilty sinner.
  • 2:14 - 2:16
The second Adam - Jesus Christ -
  • 2:16 - 2:22
died for and on behalf of guilty sinners.
  • 2:22 - 2:25
To create the bride of the first Adam,
  • 2:25 - 2:27
    his side was opened.
  • 2:27 - 2:30
To create the bride - us the believers
  • 2:30 - 2:32
    of the second Adam -
  • 2:32 - 2:35
He was pierced in His side.
  • 2:35 - 2:38
    Listen to this one.
  • 2:38 - 2:41
The first Adam was a gardener.
  • 2:41 - 2:43
When Mary went to the tomb
  • 2:43 - 2:44
    after the resurrection,
  • 2:44 - 2:46
she mistook the second Adam -
  • 2:46 - 2:50
Jesus Christ - as the gardener.
  • 2:50 - 2:54
    You can't make this up.
  • 2:54 - 2:56
    God put Adam to sleep
  • 2:56 - 2:59
in order to create his bride.
  • 2:59 - 3:03
    In order to create the
    bride of His redeemed,
  • 3:03 - 3:05
of the second Adam - Jesus Christ -
  • 3:05 - 3:08
God put Him to the sleep of death.
  • 3:08 - 3:13
    In the garden, God
    brought to Adam his wife.
  • 3:13 - 3:17
    God gives the believers to
the second Adam - Jesus Christ.
  • 3:17 - 3:20
    "All that the Father gives
    Me will come to Me."
  • 3:20 - 3:24
    The first Adam gave his
    bride a commandment.
  • 3:24 - 3:26
"You shall not eat of the tree
  • 3:26 - 3:28
of the knowledge of good and evil,
  • 3:28 - 3:30
nor touch it, lest you die."
  • 3:30 - 3:31
Christ - the second Adam -
  • 3:31 - 3:33
    gave His bride, His church,
  • 3:33 - 3:35
    a new commandment.
  • 3:35 - 3:39
"Love one another as I have loved you."
  • 3:39 - 3:44
    Both Adam and Christ are
    representative heads of two people.
  • 3:44 - 3:46
    You see, when Adam acted,
  • 3:46 - 3:48
he acted before God on behalf
  • 3:48 - 3:51
of the people he represented -
  • 3:51 - 3:52
    the human race.
  • 3:52 - 3:54
All those who are born of the flesh
  • 3:54 - 3:56
    by physical birth.
  • 3:56 - 3:58
When Christ, the second Adam, acted,
  • 3:58 - 4:01
He acted on behalf of His people -
  • 4:01 - 4:02
    the believers -
  • 4:02 - 4:07
    those who are born spiritually.
  • 4:07 - 4:10
You can just go on and on and on
  • 4:10 - 4:12
    to show how Christ fulfilled
  • 4:12 - 4:15
    the prophetic writings
    of the Old Testament.
  • 4:15 - 4:17
This is why He said to them,
  • 4:17 - 4:20
"You believe Moses. He wrote of Me."
