Preview: Zanele Muholi in Season 9 of Art21 "Art in the Twenty-First Century" (2018)

  • 0:06 - 0:09
    [ZANELE MUHOLI]
    I photograph different LGBTI individuals,
  • 0:09 - 0:11
    risking my life,
  • 0:11 - 0:17
    challenging the myth that say
being gay, being trans, is un-African.
  • 0:25 - 0:26
When I started "Faces and Phases"
  • 0:26 - 0:31
I just wanted to produce a project
    that will live beyond us.
  • 0:32 - 0:35
    As people reach different stages
    in their lives,
  • 0:35 - 0:37
    they get to be documented
  • 0:37 - 0:40
and they share for the LGBTI community.
  • 0:41 - 0:43
    It's a lifetime project.
  • 0:44 - 0:47
The book is supposed to come out in volumes.
  • 0:48 - 0:50
The next publication will be out next year,
  • 0:50 - 0:54
which then marks another period in our lives.
  • 0:55 - 0:58
I am a member of the community.
  • 1:02 - 1:06
We hardly find images that speaks of
love and joys of LGBTI individuals.
  • 1:09 - 1:11
So then it becomes the issue of ownership.
  • 1:13 - 1:19
I told myself that I would do better
than any other outsider to project our lives.
