A moving song from women in prison for life | The Lady Lifers | TEDxMuncyStatePrison
-
0:08 - 0:12John E. Wetzel: You know,
when I got this job, four long years ago, -
0:13 - 0:16(Laughter)
-
0:16 - 0:19I had never set foot
inside of state prison. -
0:19 - 0:22I was literally running
-
0:23 - 0:25a 400-bed little county jail.
-
0:30 - 0:32That's a whole other story.
-
0:33 - 0:36But one of the things I had
the biggest misconception about -
0:36 - 0:39was the role of lifers
-
0:41 - 0:44in the day-to-day life inside prisons,
-
0:44 - 0:47and literally in the soul
of the department. -
0:49 - 0:52And so let's jump forward
from 2010 to 2014 -
0:53 - 0:56when we did our first TEDx event,
at Grateford, -
0:58 - 1:03probably the male prison
that has the largest lifer population -
1:04 - 1:08that's engaged and part
of the day-to-day operation -
1:08 - 1:10from a programmatic standpoint.
-
1:10 - 1:14Who literally improve
the quality of life inside the prison. -
1:14 - 1:16So, it's not a coincidence,
-
1:17 - 1:20that we're here for our second event
-
1:20 - 1:24at a female prison
that has the same dynamic. -
1:25 - 1:29That has a strong,
vibrant lifer population -
1:30 - 1:35that adds to the quality of life
of inmates and staff -
1:36 - 1:38and our organization.
-
1:38 - 1:41And so there's literally no other way
-
1:41 - 1:43that we could wrap this up
-
1:44 - 1:47than to hear from The Lady Lifers.
-
1:47 - 1:49(Applause)
-
1:56 - 2:01(Music)
-
2:01 - 2:05Dannielle Hadley: Life
in Pennsylvania means just that: -
2:06 - 2:08life without the possibility of parole.
-
2:09 - 2:11For us lifers,
-
2:11 - 2:13as we call ourselves,
-
2:13 - 2:15our only chance for release
-
2:15 - 2:17is through commutation,
-
2:17 - 2:21which has only been granted
to two women since 1989, -
2:22 - 2:24close to 30 years ago.
-
2:26 - 2:28Our song, "This Is Not Our Home,"
-
2:28 - 2:31it tells of our experiences
-
2:31 - 2:34while doing life
without the possibility of parole. -
2:41 - 2:45(Music)
-
2:55 - 2:58Brenda Watkins: I'm a woman.
-
2:58 - 3:01I'm a grandmother.
-
3:01 - 3:03I'm a daughter.
-
3:04 - 3:06I have a son.
-
3:07 - 3:09I'm not an angel.
-
3:09 - 3:12I'm not the devil.
-
3:13 - 3:15I came to jail
-
3:16 - 3:18when I was so young.
-
3:25 - 3:29I spend my time here
-
3:30 - 3:34inside these prison walls.
-
3:36 - 3:39Lost friends to death,
-
3:40 - 3:43saw some go home.
-
3:46 - 3:49Watch years pass,
-
3:50 - 3:53people come and go,
-
3:54 - 3:58while I do life without parole.
-
4:09 - 4:13I am a prisonerfor the wrong I've done.
-
4:14 - 4:16I'm doing time here.
-
4:16 - 4:18This is not my home.
-
4:18 - 4:22Dream of freedom, hope for mercy.
-
4:23 - 4:26Will I see
-
4:28 - 4:31my family
-
4:31 - 4:34or die alone?
-
4:42 - 4:45As the years go by,
-
4:46 - 4:49I hold back my tears,
-
4:50 - 4:55because if I cry I'd give in to fear.
-
4:59 - 5:03I must be strong, have to hold on.
-
5:07 - 5:10Gotta get through
-
5:11 - 5:14another year.
-
5:15 - 5:19I am a prisoner for the wrong I've done.
-
5:21 - 5:24I'm doing time here.
This is not my home. -
5:24 - 5:28Dream of freedom, hope for mercy.
-
5:29 - 5:32Will I see
-
5:34 - 5:36my family
-
5:37 - 5:40or die alone?
-
5:47 - 5:50I'm not saying that I'm not guilty,
-
5:51 - 5:55I'm not saying that I shouldn't pay.
-
5:56 - 5:59All I'm asking is for forgiveness.
-
6:00 - 6:04Gotta have hope I'll be free someday.
-
6:15 - 6:18Is there a place for me
-
6:18 - 6:20in the world out there?
-
6:22 - 6:27Will they ever know or care
that I'm chained? -
6:30 - 6:36Is there redemption for the sin
of my younger days? -
6:37 - 6:40Because I've changed.
-
6:42 - 6:45Lord knows I've changed.
-
6:45 - 6:50I am a prisoner for the wrong I've done.
-
6:50 - 6:54I'm doing time here.
This is not my home. -
6:54 - 6:58Dream of freedom, hope for mercy.
-
6:59 - 7:01Will I see
-
7:03 - 7:05my family
-
7:05 - 7:08or die alone?
-
7:14 - 7:17Will I see

- Title:
- A moving song from women in prison for life | The Lady Lifers | TEDxMuncyStatePrison
- Description:
-
This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences.
The nine women in this chorus have all been sentenced to life in prison. They share a moving song about their experiences — one that reveals their hopes, regrets and fears. "I'm not an angel," sings one, "but I'm not the devil." It's a rare and poignant look inside the world of people imprisoned with no hope of parole. - Video Language:
