A Church's Responsibility to Their Pastors - Chuck Vuolo

  • 0:00 - 0:03
    As you can imagine,
    it is an unspeakable joy
  • 0:03 - 0:06
for my wife Diana and myself
  • 0:06 - 0:07
    to arrive at this day,
  • 0:07 - 0:10
when our son can be officially recognized
  • 0:10 - 0:12
    as a shepherd
  • 0:12 - 0:17
in a church of the blood-
    bought people of God.
  • 0:17 - 0:19
It is also a sobering reality
  • 0:19 - 0:22
in light of what we have heard.
  • 0:22 - 0:24
And mine is to bring a charge to you,
  • 0:24 - 0:28
the congregation of Grace Community Church
  • 0:28 - 0:29
    as to your responsibilities
  • 0:29 - 0:32
in receiving a pastor to be among you
  • 0:32 - 0:34
    and as the Scriptures say,
  • 0:34 - 0:37
to be over you in the Lord.
  • 0:37 - 0:40
And I want to bring to
    you from God's Word,
  • 0:40 - 0:42
    six areas of responsibility
  • 0:42 - 0:44
given to you by the Lord
  • 0:44 - 0:47
as you receive a new pastor.
  • 0:47 - 0:49
And I'll get right to it.
  • 0:49 - 0:50
    The first one is this:
  • 0:50 - 0:53
Recognize him according to the gifts
  • 0:53 - 0:56
    and graces God has given.
  • 0:56 - 0:57
    Someone has said,
  • 0:57 - 1:00
"Only God can make a minister.
  • 1:00 - 1:03
Only God can make a pastor."
  • 1:03 - 1:04
    And that's true isn't it.
  • 1:04 - 1:07
Because only God can furnish a man
  • 1:07 - 1:09
    with the graces of character
  • 1:09 - 1:11
and the gifts of leadership and preaching
  • 1:11 - 1:13
    that are needed to
    shepherd the flock of God.
  • 1:13 - 1:15
Only God can make a pastor.
  • 1:15 - 1:18
    Now that doesn't mean
    that there are not people
  • 1:18 - 1:20
    who run into the pastorate
  • 1:20 - 1:22
not having been called and sent by God.
  • 1:22 - 1:23
There are men who do that.
  • 1:23 - 1:28
In our day, sadly, there are even
    women who do that, wrongly.
  • 1:28 - 1:29
    Why do they go?
  • 1:29 - 1:31
In some cases, they go to try to live up
  • 1:31 - 1:33
to the misguided expectations of others.
  • 1:33 - 1:36
    Perhaps a father who says,
  • 1:36 - 1:38
"My son is going to be a pastor."
  • 1:38 - 1:40
    In other cases, a man
    likes to study theology
  • 1:40 - 1:43
    and he thinks, "Well,
that would be a nice job.
  • 1:43 - 1:44
Being holed up in a room,
  • 1:44 - 1:47
    reading theological books all day.
  • 1:47 - 1:49
    I think that'll be a nice gig!"
  • 1:49 - 1:52
    Others are very sociable,
    and they would say:
  • 1:52 - 1:55
    "You know, I like
    to socialize with people
  • 1:55 - 1:57
and being a pastor I get
    to socialize with people.
  • 1:57 - 1:59
I think I'd like to be a pastor."
  • 1:59 - 2:01
More culpably, sadly, there are people
  • 2:01 - 2:04
who like to exercise control and power
  • 2:04 - 2:05
    over other people.
  • 2:05 - 2:09
    And they enter the ministry
    for that wrong reason.
  • 2:09 - 2:11
And others, because of a large ego,
  • 2:11 - 2:13
they like to be front and center
  • 2:13 - 2:15
and be the center of attention.
  • 2:15 - 2:17
There are people, there are men,
  • 2:17 - 2:18
    sadly even women,
  • 2:18 - 2:21
who seek to run into pastoral ministry
  • 2:21 - 2:25
    without having been
    called and sent by God.
  • 2:25 - 2:30
But only God can equip, and call,
  • 2:30 - 2:34
    and send a true shepherd.
  • 2:34 - 2:37
And your job, church at Laredo,
  • 2:37 - 2:40
therefore is not to make a man a pastor.
  • 2:40 - 2:42
    You can't do that.
  • 2:42 - 2:46
It is to recognize the man and men
  • 2:46 - 2:48
that God raises up among you
  • 2:48 - 2:50
    to be in that calling.
  • 2:50 - 2:53
And that's what you are doing today.
  • 2:53 - 2:55
    You are recognizing,
  • 2:55 - 2:58
based on the qualifications given by God
  • 2:58 - 3:01
    in 1 Timothy 3:1-7, Titus 1:5-9,
  • 3:01 - 3:03
    you are recognizing a man
  • 3:03 - 3:06
whom you believe God has give you
  • 3:06 - 3:08
    to shepherd your souls.
  • 3:08 - 3:12
Your work is the work of recognition.
  • 3:12 - 3:15
And may I say, that I heartily concur
  • 3:15 - 3:18
with what is being done today.
  • 3:18 - 3:21
If I might say some personal words
  • 3:21 - 3:24
as the father of this young man,
  • 3:24 - 3:28
I have marveled at the grace of God
  • 3:28 - 3:32
that has brought him to this day.
  • 3:32 - 3:36
I never groomed my son to be a pastor,
  • 3:36 - 3:37
    because it was my conviction
  • 3:37 - 3:40
that I don't make men pastors.
  • 3:40 - 3:42
    I never even imagined it.
  • 3:42 - 3:46
Quite frankly, for many years -
  • 3:46 - 3:48
and his brother and sister are here
  • 3:48 - 3:49
and can testify to it -
  • 3:49 - 3:52
    Jeremy was our fun-loving,
  • 3:52 - 3:54
    people-loving jock.
  • 3:54 - 3:58
    Much more likely to have
a soccer ball on his foot
  • 3:58 - 4:02
than a book in his hand.
  • 4:02 - 4:03
But it's been amazing to watch
  • 4:03 - 4:06
    what God has done.
  • 4:06 - 4:07
    Beginning midway through college,
  • 4:07 - 4:11
    when he decided to
    plant his flag for Christ.
  • 4:11 - 4:14
    Started a fellowship of
    Christian athletes on campus,
  • 4:14 - 4:16
    and from there on after,
  • 4:16 - 4:18
every Sunday night at eight o'clock,
  • 4:18 - 4:20
    he would be teaching his
    fellow college students
  • 4:20 - 4:22
    from the Bible.
  • 4:22 - 4:25
And then there was the first
    professional contract in Finland
  • 4:25 - 4:28
where he had a premature mantel
  • 4:28 - 4:32
    of leadership responsibilities
    thrust upon him;
  • 4:32 - 4:34
where he was looked to teach and lead
  • 4:34 - 4:37
a rather immature group of saints.
  • 4:37 - 4:39
And we did a lot of Skype-ing,
  • 4:39 - 4:41
    across the Atlantic that year.
  • 4:41 - 4:44
But it was then that I
    began to see in him
  • 4:44 - 4:46
    a shepherd's heart.
  • 4:46 - 4:47
He would review with me a letter
  • 4:47 - 4:51
    that he was writing to
    someone twice his age
  • 4:51 - 4:52
    giving counsel.
  • 4:52 - 4:54
And as I read that thing I said:
  • 4:54 - 4:57
"I could not do any better than that!"
  • 4:57 - 4:58
    The truth-content,
  • 4:58 - 5:00
and the love and grace in that letter!
  • 5:00 - 5:02
    And I began to see...
  • 5:02 - 5:04
I began to say to myself:
  • 5:04 - 5:06
"If I know anything of what a pastor is,
  • 5:06 - 5:08
of what a shepherd's heart is,
  • 5:08 - 5:11
I'm beginning to see it in my son."
  • 5:11 - 5:14
    And then, two years spent
  • 5:14 - 5:17
    in the Conway's home
  • 5:17 - 5:19
and in the church in San Antonio
  • 5:19 - 5:22
for which my wife and I
  • 5:22 - 5:25
    are tremendously grateful
  • 5:25 - 5:27
for the influence, Tim and Ruby,
  • 5:27 - 5:31
    of your home, your lives,
  • 5:31 - 5:34
    the influence of the church.
  • 5:34 - 5:37
    It has been hugely challenging
  • 5:37 - 5:40
and formative in our son's life.
  • 5:40 - 5:42
    And we are forever grateful
  • 5:42 - 5:46
for God's usefulness of you in his life,
  • 5:46 - 5:49
    bringing him to this day.
  • 5:49 - 5:51
    So, church of Laredo.
  • 5:51 - 5:53
    You can't make a pastor;
  • 5:53 - 5:55
    now or in the future.
  • 5:55 - 5:57
But you are called to recognize
  • 5:57 - 6:00
those whom God has gifted and called.
  • 6:00 - 6:02
    And you're doing that today.
  • 6:02 - 6:04
    The second thing that
    is your responsibility
  • 6:04 - 6:07
is to receive him as a loving gift
  • 6:07 - 6:11
of the glorified Lord Jesus Christ.
  • 6:11 - 6:20
I turn briefly (or just listen)
    to Ephesians 4:9-11.
  • 6:20 - 6:22
    You are to receive him
  • 6:22 - 6:26
as a loving gift of your glorified Savior.
  • 6:26 - 6:33
    In Ephesians 4:9-11 we read:
  • 6:33 - 6:36
    "Now this expression, 'He ascended',
  • 6:36 - 6:38
what does it mean except that He also
  • 6:38 - 6:41
    had descended into the
    lower parts of the earth?
  • 6:41 - 6:43
He who descended is Himself also
  • 6:43 - 6:46
He who ascended far above all the heavens,
  • 6:46 - 6:48
so that He might fill all things."
  • 6:48 - 6:49
    And notice verse 11
  • 6:49 - 6:51
"And He gave some as apostles,
  • 6:51 - 6:53
    and some as prophets,
  • 6:53 - 6:55
and some as evangelists, and some as..."
  • 6:55 - 6:58
    as the Greek would likely
    have it, "pastor-teachers."
  • 6:58 - 7:01
Jesus descended to live a perfect life
  • 7:01 - 7:04
that we could not live, and died a death
  • 7:04 - 7:07
in our place that we deserved to die!
  • 7:07 - 7:09
And then He was raised from the dead,
  • 7:09 - 7:12
He was ascended to the Father,
  • 7:12 - 7:14
    and He's glorified at
    the Father's right hand
  • 7:14 - 7:16
and from that place of glorification,
  • 7:16 - 7:19
He has given gifts to His Church.
  • 7:19 - 7:22
    Rather, He has given men
    as gifts to His Church!
  • 7:22 - 7:24
    He gave apostles and prophets.
  • 7:24 - 7:26
Earlier in that letter it says
  • 7:26 - 7:28
the church is built upon the foundation
  • 7:28 - 7:31
of the apostles and New Testament prophets.
  • 7:31 - 7:33
    He gave evangelists.
  • 7:33 - 7:35
    Christians disagree as to
    what an evangelist is.
  • 7:35 - 7:37
I would take it to mean those who
  • 7:37 - 7:39
take the gospel into virgin territory.
  • 7:39 - 7:42
    But he gave pastor-teachers.
  • 7:42 - 7:44
    And church at Laredo.
  • 7:44 - 7:47
The point for you is this:
  • 7:47 - 7:51
    Jesus Christ, your
    ascended, glorified Lord,
  • 7:51 - 7:55
is giving you a gift today!
  • 7:55 - 7:57
It's a gift of His love!
  • 7:57 - 8:01
It's a token of His grace and favor!
  • 8:01 - 8:03
    Little flock in Laredo,
  • 8:03 - 8:05
Jesus has His eye on you.
  • 8:05 - 8:07
    He has not forgotten you!
  • 8:07 - 8:08
    He loves you
  • 8:08 - 8:10
and is giving you a gift.
  • 8:10 - 8:11
    Someone has said:
  • 8:11 - 8:13
    "Pastors are not needed
  • 8:13 - 8:15
for the being of the Church,
  • 8:15 - 8:16
    but for its well-being."
  • 8:16 - 8:18
    And I think that's true.
  • 8:18 - 8:19
    Acts 14:23 says,
  • 8:19 - 8:21
    "When they had appointed elders
  • 8:21 - 8:23
    for them in every church..."
  • 8:23 - 8:26
The idea was they were already churches
  • 8:26 - 8:28
    before they had elders.
  • 8:28 - 8:31
    Elders are not needed for
    the being of the church,
  • 8:31 - 8:32
    but for its well-being.
  • 8:32 - 8:34
If the church is to flourish
  • 8:34 - 8:37
    and grow internally and spiritually,
  • 8:37 - 8:40
if it is to expand numerically
    and evangelistically,
  • 8:40 - 8:42
    it needs shepherds.
  • 8:42 - 8:44
    Jesus loves you.
  • 8:44 - 8:45
He has His eye on you.
  • 8:45 - 8:50
He is giving you a gift,
    today, of a pastor.
  • 8:50 - 8:53
    Receive him as a gift
  • 8:53 - 8:55
    of Christ's love for you.
  • 8:55 - 9:00
Thirdly, you are to respect him
  • 9:00 - 9:04
    for the sake of his
    diligent labor among you.
  • 9:04 - 9:07
And for that I turn you
    to 1 Thessalonians 5,
  • 9:07 - 9:09
    just two verses.
  • 9:09 - 9:12
Either turn there or just listen.
  • 9:12 - 9:15
"But we request of you, brethren,
  • 9:15 - 9:16
    that you appreciate those who
  • 9:16 - 9:19
    diligently labor among you
  • 9:19 - 9:21
and have charge over you in the Lord
  • 9:21 - 9:23
    and give you instruction..."
  • 9:23 - 9:24
    Now listen to this,
  • 9:24 - 9:27
    "and that you esteem
    them very highly in love
  • 9:27 - 9:29
    because of their work."
  • 9:29 - 9:30
    Now let's unpack briefly,
  • 9:30 - 9:32
    some of those words.
  • 9:32 - 9:36
    The word "appreciate" is
    actually the word "to know",
  • 9:36 - 9:38
    but it's understood in
    the Hebraistic sense
  • 9:38 - 9:41
    of having regard for, cherishing,
  • 9:41 - 9:44
    paying attention to.
  • 9:44 - 9:46
    The word "esteem":
  • 9:46 - 9:49
    consider, think, account,
  • 9:49 - 9:50
    it means to have deliberate
  • 9:50 - 9:53
    and careful judgment.
  • 9:53 - 9:55
    "Esteem very highly."
  • 9:55 - 9:57
    That's the word used in
    Ephesians 3:20 when it says:
  • 9:57 - 10:00
"God is able to do super abundantly
  • 10:00 - 10:02
beyond what we ask or think."
  • 10:02 - 10:06
You are to super abundantly esteem him,
  • 10:06 - 10:10
but for his work, his diligent labor.
  • 10:10 - 10:12
    And that word "labor" means
  • 10:12 - 10:15
    wearisome effort, intense labor,
  • 10:15 - 10:17
it actually comes from a verb that means
  • 10:17 - 10:20
to beat the breast in grief.
  • 10:20 - 10:23
He is to be a hard diligent worker,
  • 10:23 - 10:28
sometimes to weariness of body and soul.
  • 10:28 - 10:29
    And he admonishes you,
  • 10:29 - 10:31
he puts in your mind truth
  • 10:31 - 10:33
that leads you back into the way.
  • 10:33 - 10:34
    You put all this together
  • 10:34 - 10:36
and this is what you get:
  • 10:36 - 10:41
You are to know, pay attention to,
  • 10:41 - 10:44
have regard for the laborious work
  • 10:44 - 10:47
that your pastor is doing among you.
  • 10:47 - 10:49
    What does that mean practically?
  • 10:49 - 10:51
    Take some time to think
  • 10:51 - 10:53
about the many hours he takes
  • 10:53 - 10:55
to study the Word of God,
  • 10:55 - 10:56
    in order to teach it
  • 10:56 - 10:58
and preach it and counsel it
  • 10:58 - 11:02
accurately and profitably for your soul.
  • 11:02 - 11:04
Give attention to the hours he spends
  • 11:04 - 11:06
    in prayer over your souls.
  • 11:06 - 11:08
Men in the ministry are to give
  • 11:08 - 11:10
more time to prayer like the apostles:
  • 11:10 - 11:11
"We will give ourselves to prayer
  • 11:11 - 11:13
and the ministry of the Word."
  • 11:13 - 11:15
And he's gonna be laboring hours
  • 11:15 - 11:17
    in prayer over you individually.
  • 11:17 - 11:18
    And think about those hours
  • 11:18 - 11:21
he's spending in prayer for your needs,
  • 11:21 - 11:24
for your souls, for your struggles,
  • 11:24 - 11:27
for your hurts, for your sins.
  • 11:27 - 11:30
Take stock of the hours he will spend,
  • 11:30 - 11:31
    and does spend,
  • 11:31 - 11:33
    sitting down with you as families;
  • 11:33 - 11:36
    giving you a spiritual check-up.
  • 11:36 - 11:38
Checking up in how you're doing
  • 11:38 - 11:39
    in your devotional life.
  • 11:39 - 11:42
How are things in the marriage?
    How is your family life?
  • 11:42 - 11:44
How are you training your children?
  • 11:44 - 11:45
How are you using your gifts
  • 11:45 - 11:47
for the edification of the church?
  • 11:47 - 11:49
How can you be a better witness
  • 11:49 - 11:52
to the lost ones around you?
  • 11:52 - 11:54
And consider also the many hours
  • 11:54 - 11:57
    that he spends counseling you one on one;
  • 11:57 - 12:01
    listening patiently, and
    then seeking to give
  • 12:01 - 12:05
    thoughtful, wise, and biblical advice.
  • 12:05 - 12:07
Think of the times that you
  • 12:07 - 12:08
or a loved one has a crisis,
  • 12:08 - 12:11
and maybe lands in the hospital.
  • 12:11 - 12:14
Who is likely to be the first one
  • 12:14 - 12:16
    at your bedside to pray,
  • 12:16 - 12:19
    to comfort, to minister?
  • 12:19 - 12:22
It's likely going to be your pastor.
  • 12:22 - 12:24
And as you think about these things,
  • 12:24 - 12:27
God is saying to you as a church:
  • 12:27 - 12:31
    "Super-highly esteem him
  • 12:31 - 12:33
    for that diligent work
  • 12:33 - 12:35
that he is doing among you."
  • 12:35 - 12:39
And may I make a logical
    deduction from this?
  • 12:39 - 12:43
    As you super-highly esteem him,
  • 12:43 - 12:47
    will you look for ways
    to express that to him?
  • 12:47 - 12:49
I've been a pastor for a lot of years,
  • 12:49 - 12:51
    and one of the things
    I've noticed over the years
  • 12:51 - 12:54
    is people tend to
    appreciate their pastors,
  • 12:54 - 12:58
    but rarely tell them.
  • 12:58 - 12:58
    You ask a man:
  • 12:58 - 13:00
    Do you appreciate your pastor?
  • 13:00 - 13:01
    "Oh, our pastor is wonderful!
  • 13:01 - 13:04
He feeds us so well on the Word of God,
  • 13:04 - 13:08
    He's such a patient,
    loving counselor to us!"
  • 13:08 - 13:10
Have you ever told him that?
  • 13:10 - 13:14
    "Well, I think there was
a time a few years ago.
  • 13:14 - 13:17
    I might have mentioned something."
  • 13:17 - 13:20
You know men, it doesn't work in marriage
  • 13:20 - 13:23
to be like the proverbial guy who
  • 13:23 - 13:24
    said to his wife,
  • 13:24 - 13:26
"Look, I told her I loved
    her when I married her,
  • 13:26 - 13:29
and if I change my mind,
    I'll let her know."
  • 13:29 - 13:32
    Now that doesn't work
    in marriage, does it?
  • 13:32 - 13:33
You can hardly tell your wife
  • 13:33 - 13:36
enough times in the day, "I love you!"
  • 13:36 - 13:40
    Assuming it's sincere.
  • 13:40 - 13:41
    People of God,
  • 13:41 - 13:44
    express your appreciation
  • 13:44 - 13:46
for your pastor and his labor.
  • 13:46 - 13:49
    "Oh, but I don't want
him to get a big head!"
  • 13:49 - 13:51
Let me tell you, God knows how
  • 13:51 - 13:53
to keep a man's head small. Okay?
  • 13:53 - 13:54
    God knows wonderfully
  • 13:54 - 13:56
    how to balance encouragement
  • 13:56 - 13:57
    with humbling.
  • 13:57 - 13:59
    You leave that to God!
  • 13:59 - 14:01
And you just seek to encourage him,
  • 14:01 - 14:03
and there are many ways to do that.
  • 14:03 - 14:04
    And church at Laredo,
  • 14:04 - 14:05
from what I know of you,
  • 14:05 - 14:06
I need to just commend you,
  • 14:06 - 14:08
    because you have expressed
  • 14:08 - 14:11
your esteem and respect in so many ways.
  • 14:11 - 14:12
    Material gifts,
  • 14:12 - 14:15
    household furnishings for his apartment,
  • 14:15 - 14:19
    money for books, books;
  • 14:19 - 14:21
you've already done much of that.
  • 14:21 - 14:22
    You know the highest way
  • 14:22 - 14:24
that you can show respect for your pastor
  • 14:24 - 14:27
however is to allow the Word of God
  • 14:27 - 14:29
that he teaches, preaches, and counsels
  • 14:29 - 14:31
to take root in your life,
  • 14:31 - 14:32
and to let him see the fruit
  • 14:32 - 14:33
    being born in your life
  • 14:33 - 14:35
    from what he's laboring in.
  • 14:35 - 14:41
    That's the greatest way
    to show him respect!
  • 14:41 - 14:43
    Here's a fourth thing:
  • 14:43 - 14:46
Rejoice his heart by your obedience,
  • 14:46 - 14:48
    and some of you know
    where I'm going with that.
  • 14:48 - 14:52
    Hebrews 13:17
  • 14:52 - 14:56
Rejoice his heart by your obedience.
  • 14:56 - 14:58
The writer to the Hebrews says:
  • 14:58 - 15:00
"Obey your leaders, submit to them.
  • 15:00 - 15:03
they keep watch over your souls
  • 15:03 - 15:05
as those who will give an account.
  • 15:05 - 15:07
Let them do that with joy,
  • 15:07 - 15:08
    and not with grief,
  • 15:08 - 15:12
for that would be unprofitable for you."
  • 15:12 - 15:14
We live in a moral universe,
  • 15:14 - 15:16
and God reigns over this universe,
  • 15:16 - 15:18
    He is the absolute authority
  • 15:18 - 15:20
    and King of this universe!
  • 15:20 - 15:21
By nature, we are in rebellion
  • 15:21 - 15:23
    against His authority however.
  • 15:23 - 15:24
    The Bible says,
  • 15:24 - 15:27
"we've all turned to our own way."
  • 15:27 - 15:29
But when we've become rightly related
  • 15:29 - 15:31
to God through faith in Jesus Christ,
  • 15:31 - 15:34
    we become a submissive people.
  • 15:34 - 15:37
    Submission becomes a watch-word
  • 15:37 - 15:38
    for the child of God.
  • 15:38 - 15:40
    We submit ultimately to God,
  • 15:40 - 15:43
but one of the ways we show
    our submission to God
  • 15:43 - 15:45
is by submitting to the human authorities
  • 15:45 - 15:47
that God has put over us.
  • 15:47 - 15:50
    Wives, be submissive to husbands.
  • 15:50 - 15:51
    Children, obey parents.
  • 15:51 - 15:54
We are to obey the governing authorities.
  • 15:54 - 15:59
    Employees are to obey employers.
  • 15:59 - 16:02
And God has called His redeemed people
  • 16:02 - 16:05
to put themselves into local assemblies,
  • 16:05 - 16:08
    churches, where there are elders,
  • 16:08 - 16:09
    pastors, overseers,
  • 16:09 - 16:12
who are over them in the Lord.
  • 16:12 - 16:17
    And this text of Scripture
    calls us to obey them.
  • 16:17 - 16:20
Literally "to be persuaded" by them.
  • 16:20 - 16:22
    And to submit to them,
  • 16:22 - 16:26
    literally "to give way to,
    to yield" to them.
  • 16:26 - 16:32
And let me point to a two-fold
    responsibility that this gives us.
  • 16:32 - 16:33
    On the one hand,
  • 16:33 - 16:36
obey your leaders, submit to them...
  • 16:36 - 16:39
    Brothers and sisters
    in the church of Laredo,
  • 16:39 - 16:44
    when your pastor labors
    in the Word of God,
  • 16:44 - 16:47
to tell you what biblical words mean
  • 16:47 - 16:52
what biblical sentences mean, in context,
  • 16:52 - 16:56
    near and far, consistent
    with systematic theology,
  • 16:56 - 17:00
the doctrine fitting in with the
    other doctrines of the Bible,
  • 17:00 - 17:02
    consistent with biblical theology,
  • 17:02 - 17:03
    consistent with the whole sweep
  • 17:03 - 17:05
    and totality of God's revelation;
  • 17:05 - 17:08
when he is getting out of God's Word
  • 17:08 - 17:10
what is pretty clear the Holy Spirit
  • 17:10 - 17:12
    put into God's Word,
  • 17:12 - 17:14
and he's giving it to you accurately,
  • 17:14 - 17:17
    brothers and sisters, obey it!
  • 17:17 - 17:19
    Do what it says!
  • 17:19 - 17:20
    Believe what it says!
  • 17:20 - 17:22
Think the way you're supposed to think!
  • 17:22 - 17:24
In doing so, you won't so much be
  • 17:24 - 17:26
    obeying a fallible man,
  • 17:26 - 17:28
    but you'll be obeying God
  • 17:28 - 17:32
and that will be to the
    blessing of your soul!
  • 17:32 - 17:35
It will also bring him joy!
  • 17:35 - 17:38
Remember what the elder Apostle John said?
  • 17:38 - 17:41
"I have no greater joy than this,
  • 17:41 - 17:43
than to hear of my children
  • 17:43 - 17:45
    walking in the truth."
  • 17:45 - 17:48
And a true shepherd has no greater joy
  • 17:48 - 17:50
than to hear of his spiritual children
  • 17:50 - 17:53
    walking in the truth.
  • 17:53 - 17:57
    Rejoice his heart by obeying,
  • 17:57 - 18:00
not what he says, but what God says!
  • 18:00 - 18:02
And there will be a wonderful circle
  • 18:02 - 18:04
    of celebration and joy.
  • 18:04 - 18:06
    You will be blessed for
    doing what God says,
  • 18:06 - 18:08
    and he will have joy
  • 18:08 - 18:10
for seeing the people under his care
  • 18:10 - 18:12
    walking in the truth.
  • 18:12 - 18:14
But I need to qualify that
  • 18:14 - 18:18
    for the balance of truth.
  • 18:18 - 18:21
I had an old Amish bishop
or minister once say to me:
  • 18:21 - 18:23
    "For every mile of road,
  • 18:23 - 18:26
    there's two miles of ditch."
  • 18:26 - 18:31
    And I'm always concerned
    about balancing truth.
  • 18:31 - 18:32
The main duty people have got is:
  • 18:32 - 18:34
obey your leaders when they bring you
  • 18:34 - 18:36
    the Word of God,
  • 18:36 - 18:39
but I need to say this
    for the balance of truth.
  • 18:39 - 18:45
    All human authority is limited.
  • 18:45 - 18:49
    All human authority has boundaries.
  • 18:49 - 18:52
    Only God has absolute authority.
  • 18:52 - 18:54
And you are to obey your pastor,
  • 18:54 - 18:56
as long as he is bringing to you
  • 18:56 - 18:58
    the Word of God.
  • 18:58 - 19:00
But when he goes outside of the bounds
  • 19:00 - 19:01
    of the Word of God;
  • 19:01 - 19:05
    when he misaligns himself
    with God and His Word,
  • 19:05 - 19:06
may I say that you are to
  • 19:06 - 19:10
    conscientiously and respectfully disobey.
  • 19:10 - 19:12
We see that in the Scriptures,
  • 19:12 - 19:14
when the Hebrew midwives were commanded
  • 19:14 - 19:15
to kill the Hebrew baby boys.
  • 19:15 - 19:18
Exodus 1:17 says, "They feared God
  • 19:18 - 19:20
and did not do as the king of Egypt
  • 19:20 - 19:21
    had commanded them,"
  • 19:21 - 19:23
    but let the boys live.
  • 19:23 - 19:24
    They defied the human authority
  • 19:24 - 19:26
and God blessed them for it.
  • 19:26 - 19:28
In the New Testament, the apostles
  • 19:28 - 19:30
are told by Jesus, "Go and preach!"
  • 19:30 - 19:32
The human authorities come and say,
  • 19:32 - 19:34
    "Stop teaching in this name!"
  • 19:34 - 19:37
And they were put on the horns
    of a dilemma, weren't they?
  • 19:37 - 19:38
    If you got two horses
  • 19:38 - 19:40
and they're going in opposite directions,
  • 19:40 - 19:43
    you better jump on one,
    and let the other go.
  • 19:43 - 19:44
    If the boat is moving,
  • 19:44 - 19:45
    departing from the dock,
  • 19:45 - 19:46
you can't stay on the dock
  • 19:46 - 19:48
and jump on the ship at the same time.
  • 19:48 - 19:50
    You gotta make a choice.
  • 19:50 - 19:51
And they said, "Whether it is right
  • 19:51 - 19:53
in the sight of God to listen to you
  • 19:53 - 19:55
    human authorities or to God,
  • 19:55 - 19:56
    you be the judge.
  • 19:56 - 19:57
    We cannot stop speaking
  • 19:57 - 19:59
the things we've seen and heard."
  • 19:59 - 20:01
And a chapter later, they said:
  • 20:01 - 20:05
"We must obey God, rather than men."
  • 20:05 - 20:06
    I have passion for this
  • 20:06 - 20:08
    because for nearly eleven years,
  • 20:08 - 20:11
    I have worked among one
    of the most legalistic groups
  • 20:11 - 20:13
    claiming to be Christians
  • 20:13 - 20:14
    anywhere on planet earth:
  • 20:14 - 20:16
    the Old Order Amish.
  • 20:16 - 20:17
And I have seen what man-made rules
  • 20:17 - 20:19
    and traditions do to
  • 20:19 - 20:21
    sear the conscience of people
  • 20:21 - 20:24
    and keep them from
    understanding the Gospel.
  • 20:24 - 20:26
And so I sound this as a balancing note.
  • 20:26 - 20:29
And friend, it's no small matter.
  • 20:29 - 20:31
    It's a matter of Lordship.
  • 20:31 - 20:33
    Who will be Lord?
  • 20:33 - 20:35
    There's only one Person
  • 20:35 - 20:36
who has the right to be
  • 20:36 - 20:38
    the Lord of your conscience,
  • 20:38 - 20:40
    your soul, and your life.
  • 20:40 - 20:42
    Romans 14:9 tells us:
  • 20:42 - 20:44
"For to this end, Christ died
  • 20:44 - 20:47
and lived again that He might be Lord
  • 20:47 - 20:49
both of the dead and the living.
  • 20:49 - 20:51
But you, why do you judge your brother?"
  • 20:51 - 20:55
    It's the context of Christian
    liberty of conscience
  • 20:55 - 20:57
where it's not a moral issue.
  • 20:57 - 20:59
    Christian, don't judge one another.
  • 20:59 - 21:02
Let Christ be the Lord of
    your brother's conscience.
  • 21:02 - 21:06
    You never want to sacrifice
    the Lordship of Christ
  • 21:06 - 21:08
    over your conscience.
  • 21:08 - 21:10
Now, am I saying that because I think
  • 21:10 - 21:12
    there's any realistic danger
  • 21:12 - 21:15
    that my son, your pastor,
    will lord it over you?
  • 21:15 - 21:18
I don't have that concern in the least.
  • 21:18 - 21:21
    And as I know, the
    pastors represented here,
  • 21:21 - 21:23
they are not those who lord it over.
  • 21:23 - 21:26
    They are humble servant-leaders.
  • 21:26 - 21:30
But some of you have been
    under abusive leadership.
  • 21:30 - 21:31
And you need to be warned.
  • 21:31 - 21:33
Human authority is to be obeyed,
  • 21:33 - 21:37
only insofar as it obeys God and His Word.
  • 21:37 - 21:40
    So, submit to your pastor.
  • 21:40 - 21:42
When he's bringing you the Word of God
  • 21:42 - 21:45
publicly or privately, do what it says!
  • 21:45 - 21:48
Submit, but make sure he's giving you
  • 21:48 - 21:52
the Word of God, not his own opinions
  • 21:52 - 21:54
because he has no warrant from heaven
  • 21:54 - 21:55
for giving you anything other than
  • 21:55 - 21:58
what God says in His Word.
  • 21:58 - 22:05
    Fifthly of six: Imitate him
    insofar as he imitates Christ!
  • 22:05 - 22:08
    Now you notice they all
    start with "R" don't they?
  • 22:08 - 22:12
    And if you like alliteration
as I do, you can say:
  • 22:12 - 22:17
"Resemble him as he resembles Christ!"
  • 22:17 - 22:21
In Hebrews 13:7, we are told:
  • 22:21 - 22:24
    "Remember those who lead you,
  • 22:24 - 22:27
who spoke the Word of God to you
  • 22:27 - 22:29
and considering the result of their conduct,
  • 22:29 - 22:31
    imitate their faith."
  • 22:31 - 22:34
    I'm thankful that my
    son has practiced that.
  • 22:34 - 22:36
He has learned a lot of faith
  • 22:36 - 22:39
at Grace Community Church in San Antonio,
  • 22:39 - 22:42
    the kind of faith we've
    heard powerfully proclaimed.
  • 22:42 - 22:44
    And he's walking in
    the path of that faith,
  • 22:44 - 22:46
    and I'm grateful - grateful to God;
  • 22:46 - 22:49
    grateful for the human
    instruments that He uses.
  • 22:49 - 22:53
    Paul said, "Imitate me
    as I imitate Christ."
  • 22:53 - 22:56
    And Paul said to Timothy,
  • 22:56 - 22:58
"Don't let them despise your youthfulness,
  • 22:58 - 23:00
but set the believers an example
  • 23:00 - 23:04
    in speech, conduct,
    love, faith, and purity."
  • 23:04 - 23:07
Examples are meant to be imitated.
  • 23:07 - 23:08
Now make no mistake about it,
  • 23:08 - 23:11
    Jesus is our exemplar.
  • 23:11 - 23:14
He is our example par excellence.
  • 23:14 - 23:16
But Jesus has gone to Heaven,
  • 23:16 - 23:19
and Jesus has given us human role-models
  • 23:19 - 23:21
that we are intended to imitate.
  • 23:21 - 23:23
That's one of the things pastors do.
  • 23:23 - 23:24
Peter said, "Don't lord it over."
  • 23:24 - 23:25
To elders, "Don't lord it over
  • 23:25 - 23:27
    those committed to your charge,
  • 23:27 - 23:29
    but be examples to them."
  • 23:29 - 23:32
    You see, the reason overseers
  • 23:32 - 23:34
    in 1 Timothy 3 must be -
  • 23:34 - 23:37
    and there's a little Greek
    participle of necessity -
  • 23:37 - 23:39
"An overseer must be (dot dot dot)!"
  • 23:39 - 23:42
    The reason they must be
    those things is because
  • 23:42 - 23:45
    all the people of God
    ought to be those things.
  • 23:45 - 23:46
We all ought to be above reproach.
  • 23:46 - 23:49
    We all ought to manage
    our households well.
  • 23:49 - 23:52
We all ought to be gentle and considerate
  • 23:52 - 23:53
and have our children under control
  • 23:53 - 23:55
    with all dignity.
  • 23:55 - 23:57
We all ought to have good reputations.
  • 23:57 - 23:58
    Pastors must be those things,
  • 23:58 - 24:01
    because all people
    ought to be those things.
  • 24:01 - 24:04
    Here's another reason
    to study your pastor,
  • 24:04 - 24:06
to know him, to consider him
  • 24:06 - 24:08
not only that you might esteem him,
  • 24:08 - 24:11
but that you might imitate him
  • 24:11 - 24:15
in so far as he is imitating Christ.
  • 24:15 - 24:18
    And then finally, remunerate him
  • 24:18 - 24:20
    according to his merit.
  • 24:20 - 24:22
Remunerate him - that means pay him -
  • 24:22 - 24:23
    according to his merit.
  • 24:23 - 24:26
    1 Timothy 5:17 says,
  • 24:26 - 24:28
"The elders that rule well are to be
  • 24:28 - 24:29
    considered worthy of double honor,
  • 24:29 - 24:32
    especially those who work hard
  • 24:32 - 24:34
    at preaching and teaching.
  • 24:34 - 24:36
    For the Scripture says,
    'You shall not muzzle
  • 24:36 - 24:38
the ox while he is threshing' ."
  • 24:38 - 24:41
    Here's a biblical basis
    for paying pastors.
  • 24:41 - 24:44
    Now that doesn't mean that
all pastors need to be paid.
  • 24:44 - 24:47
You have some from San Antonio
    who are bi-vocational,
  • 24:47 - 24:49
they're not paid by the church.
  • 24:49 - 24:51
But the Bible says there are some men
  • 24:51 - 24:53
    who work especially hard
    in preaching and teaching,
  • 24:53 - 24:56
who ought to be given double honor.
  • 24:56 - 24:58
In the context of that chapter,
  • 24:58 - 25:00
    it means monetary pay.
  • 25:00 - 25:02
    Widows were to be honored
  • 25:02 - 25:04
in the sense that they were
  • 25:04 - 25:06
to be put on the roles of the church.
  • 25:06 - 25:08
They were to be financially supported.
  • 25:08 - 25:10
And the statement about the ox
  • 25:10 - 25:12
    really seals it, doesn't it.
  • 25:12 - 25:13
    Don't muzzle the poor beast,
  • 25:13 - 25:15
    he's treading out the grain.
  • 25:15 - 25:17
Take the muzzle off, let him
    nibble on some grain.
  • 25:17 - 25:20
    Well, God cares about animals.
  • 25:20 - 25:23
    The righteous man has regard
for the life of the beast.
  • 25:23 - 25:24
But He cares far more about
  • 25:24 - 25:27
    those who labor in
    His spiritual vineyard.
  • 25:27 - 25:31
There's a place for paying pastors.
  • 25:31 - 25:32
    So.
  • 25:32 - 25:35
And here again, church of Laredo,
  • 25:35 - 25:38
    I commend you.
  • 25:38 - 25:40
    You have taken good care
    of your pastor so far,
  • 25:40 - 25:45
    according to the means
    that God has given you.
  • 25:45 - 25:47
Beyond the salary you have given him,
  • 25:47 - 25:50
you have given him household furnishings,
  • 25:50 - 25:52
    money for books, books,
  • 25:52 - 25:55
    extra-monetary gifts,
  • 25:55 - 25:57
    bonuses, loaning him a car
  • 25:57 - 26:01
when his car is in repair in the shop.
  • 26:01 - 26:03
    And here's something very creative.
  • 26:03 - 26:06
    More than once, somebody
at the church in Laredo has,
  • 26:06 - 26:08
    at a social event,
  • 26:08 - 26:10
    stolen his keys,
  • 26:10 - 26:12
taken his car out to the gas station,
  • 26:12 - 26:14
filled it with gas, brought it back,
  • 26:14 - 26:16
put the keys back in the same place.
  • 26:16 - 26:17
    Leaving him wondering:
  • 26:17 - 26:19
"I thought it was half empty.
  • 26:19 - 26:21
    How did it get filled?"
  • 26:21 - 26:23
Many have been the expressions of love
  • 26:23 - 26:27
    that you have given
    to my son, your pastor.
  • 26:27 - 26:31
    We as parents are
    deeply grateful for that,
  • 26:31 - 26:35
but above all, God is going
    to bless you for that.
  • 26:35 - 26:36
    Because in doing it -
  • 26:36 - 26:39
since he is a gift of
the glorified Christ to you -
  • 26:39 - 26:43
to do it for him, you're
    doing it for Christ.
  • 26:43 - 26:45
    Have you noticed that Jesus
  • 26:45 - 26:48
takes very personally, first of all,
  • 26:48 - 26:51
the things done against His people.
  • 26:51 - 26:56
    "Saul, Saul, why are you
    persecuting Me?" [Acts 9:4]
  • 26:56 - 26:58
He also takes very personally the things
  • 26:58 - 27:01
that are done for His people.
  • 27:01 - 27:04
"Insofar as you have done it
to the least of these My brethren,
  • 27:04 - 27:07
you've done it unto Me." [Matthew 25:40]
  • 27:07 - 27:10
In taking care of your shepherd,
    your under-shepherd,
  • 27:10 - 27:12
    you're doing it for Christ.
  • 27:12 - 27:15
And the Lord Jesus will bless you for it.
  • 27:15 - 27:18
So, people of God in Laredo,
  • 27:18 - 27:22
but also in San Antonio, Corpus, Austin,
  • 27:22 - 27:24
    or whatever church you represent,
  • 27:24 - 27:26
    take these things to heart.
  • 27:26 - 27:29
Look to the Lord Jesus for the grace
  • 27:29 - 27:32
    to carry out these
    privileges and responsibilities.
  • 27:32 - 27:35
    Recognize the men among you
  • 27:35 - 27:38
who display the gifts and graces
  • 27:38 - 27:40
that fit them to be a pastor.
  • 27:40 - 27:45
Receive him as a loving gift
    of the glorified Christ.
  • 27:45 - 27:49
Respect him for the sake of
    his diligent labor among you.
  • 27:49 - 27:53
Rejoice his heart by obeying the truth
  • 27:53 - 27:55
    that he brings to you,
    publicly and privately.
  • 27:55 - 27:58
    Imitate, or resemble him,
  • 27:58 - 28:02
    insofar as he imitates Christ.
  • 28:02 - 28:04
And take care of him materially,
  • 28:04 - 28:07
as he sows spiritually among you.
  • 28:07 - 28:09
Take care of his material needs.
  • 28:09 - 28:12
    That is God's pattern.
  • 28:12 - 28:15
Well, may God richly bless you
  • 28:15 - 28:17
    with growth in grace internally,
  • 28:17 - 28:21
    with additions of souls
    saved from the community,
  • 28:21 - 28:22
    and may your loving,
  • 28:22 - 28:24
    victorious Lord Jesus Christ,
  • 28:24 - 28:26
    in the days ahead,
  • 28:26 - 28:28
    give you additional elders -
  • 28:28 - 28:31
because plurality is His norm -
  • 28:31 - 28:34
    and even deacons. Amen.
