Signs for a Good Education

(Sydney, October 18, 2013) -- Deaf children have a right to a quality education, like all other children, in a language and environment that maximizes their potential. In this video, in conjunction with a global conference in Sydney on equality for deaf people, Human Rights Watch shows some of the challenges faced by deaf children and young people, and the opportunities sign language education offers them.

It is only by learning sign language that deaf children can fully communicate

Today, deaf children and young people worldwide are too often denied their right to education 
في الوقت الحاضر، غالباً مايحرم الأطفال والشباب الصم في جميع انحاء العالم من حقهم في التعليم 
This is because of a lack of teachers well-trained in sign language 
ويعود السبب الى قلة المعلمين المدربين جيداً في لغة الأشارة
And lack of awareness by parents that their children can and have a right to go to school 
وقلة الوعي اولياء الأمور بأن اطفالهم يستطيعون ولهم الحق في الذهاب الى المدرسة
Sign language is mandatory if these deaf people are going to learn. Without it they cannot 
تكون لغة الأشارة إلزامية إذا اراد هؤلاء الاشخاص التعلم ، وبدونها لايمكنهم التعلم
So, it is a mother tongue that helps them to communicate with others 
لذلك فهي اللغة الأم التي تساعدهم على التواصل مع الآخرين
So without this it means the communication will be at zero 
وبالتالي سيكون التواصل بدون تعلم لغة الأشارة في مستوى الصفر ( لاشيء) 
And without communication then you cannot impart skills
وبدون التواصل لايمكنك نقل المهارات

اسباب اقتصادية
The economic reason is similar to the trades, whereby they came to trade 
السبب الأقتصادي مماثل للتجاري من حيث انهم أتو للتجارة

It's possible for the deaf to learn anything 
من الممكن ان يتعلم الصم اي شيء
But, what should happen is that they should have people who can communicate with them very well 
لكن مايجب حدوثه هو أن يكون لديهم اشخاص يستطيعون التواصل معهم جيدا
People who can use sign language 
اشخاص يستطيعون استخدام لغة الأشارة
People who understand the way they react 
اشخاص يفهمون تفاعلهم

The teacher came here and they teach very well and I understand 
المعلمون الذين أتوا هنا يعلموننا بشكل جيد جداً وانا افهم عليهم
It's very important to have learning opportunities 
من المهم للغاية بأن يكون لدينا فرص تعليم
So that they also join the other citizens in careers 
وبالتالي ينضمون الى المواطنين الآخرين في المهن ايضاً
That will make them stand on their own, make them independent 
التي ستجعلهم يعتمدون على انفسهم و تجعلهم مستقلين
And also support their families

Teaching small children in primary schools
اعلم الأطفال الصغار في المدارس الإبتدائية

Majority of the colleges , over ninety percent, they actually have no support for deaf people 
معظم الكليات ، أكثر من تسعين بالمئة، ليس لديهم اي دعم للأشخاص الصم For example, myself, I struggled very hard to get accounting 
على سبيل المثال ، نفسي، لقد ناضلت بشدة لكي أكون محاسباً
I had passed well in the mathematics, but there was no college which was accepting me
لقد أجتزت الرياضيات بنجاح ولكن لم يكن هناك اي كلية تقبلني
If I go to the university and I find that there is no interpreter 
إذا ذهبت الى الجامعة اكتشف بأن لايوجد مترجم فوري هناك
I will look for a person who can help me to interpret

Because it's hard for me to follow something which is happening without an interpreter 
لأنه من الصعب علي بأن اتابع شيء يحدث بدون مترجم فوري
Or if the teacher is not using sign language 
أو إذا المعلم لايستخدم لغة الأشارة
In class, we don't have an interpreter but I learn together with others 
في الفصل ، لايوجد عندنا مترجم فوري ولكنني اتعلم مع الآخرين بنفس الوقت
So I sit with the person and when the lecturer is writing something or is teaching 
وبالتالي اجلس مع الشخص و عندما يكتب المحاضر شيئا ما أو يعلمنا
I always copy from my friend 
انسخ من زميلي دائماً 
If I have a question, I write it down and pass it to this person who is hearing 
وإذا كان لدي سؤال ، اكتبه وامرره لشخص الذي يسمع
And will ask the lecturer to explain 
وسوف يسأل المحاضر لكي يشرحه
Our disability only affects our hearing not our mind 
تؤثر اعاقتنا على سمعنا فقط وليس عقولنا
A deaf child's mind is as good as a hearing child's mind 
عقل الطفل الأصم هو جيد بقدر عقل الطفل الذي يسمع
Being denied the human right to education in sign language has long-term consequences 
حرمان الأنسان حق التعليم بلغة الأشاره له عواقب طويلة المدى
If deaf children don't develop the ability to communicate, they are unable to learn 
إذا لم يطور الأطفال الصم قدرتهم على التواصل ، لايستطيعون ان يتعلموا
And get jobs, and are isolated within their communities 
و يحصلوا على وظائف ويتم عزلهم داخل مجتمعاتهم
