James Swartz - The Real and the Apparently Real

  • 0:23 - 0:25
    The Essence of Vedanta
  • 0:26 - 0:27
    The Real
  • 0:27 - 0:29
    and the Apparently Real
  • 0:32 - 0:35
    Once You're qualified to inquire,
  • 0:35 - 0:37
    You're capable of gaining
  • 0:37 - 0:38
    the understanding
  • 0:38 - 0:42
    that is Enlightenment or liberation.
  • 0:44 - 0:45
    Every visible
  • 0:45 - 0:49
    mortal, perishable individual,
  • 0:49 - 0:50
    has an inner Core or
  • 0:50 - 0:51
    Essence which is
  • 0:51 - 0:55
    immortal, imperishable and
  • 0:55 - 0:57
    invisible.
  • 0:57 - 0:59
    This Core or Essence
  • 0:59 - 1:00
    is called
  • 1:00 - 1:02
    the Self.
  • 1:02 - 1:04
    It is what is Real.
  • 1:05 - 1:07
    Everything else,
  • 1:07 - 1:09
the experiences in objects that present
  • 1:09 - 1:11
    themselves to You,
  • 1:11 - 1:13
    the inner Core,
  • 1:14 - 1:16
    is Apparently Real.
  • 1:17 - 1:19
The Real and The Apparently Real
  • 1:19 - 1:20
    are connected,
  • 1:20 - 1:23
    in an interesting way.
  • 1:24 - 1:25
    How they relate
  • 1:25 - 1:26
    to each other
  • 1:26 - 1:29
is explained by the following example.
  • 1:31 - 1:31
    You directly
  • 1:31 - 1:33
    experience a table.
  • 1:34 - 1:37
    It is visible, solid,
  • 1:37 - 1:40
    intangible and it has weight.
  • 1:41 - 1:43
    It seems quite obvious
  • 1:44 - 1:45
but if you think about it
  • 1:45 - 1:47
    for a minute,
  • 1:47 - 1:48
    you realize that you're not
  • 1:48 - 1:50
    experiencing a table at all.
  • 1:52 - 1:53
    Why?
  • 1:54 - 1:55
    Because You're
  • 1:55 - 1:58
    actually experiencing only wood.
  • 2:00 - 2:03
    The wood is solid,
  • 2:03 - 2:06
    tangible and has weight,
  • 2:06 - 2:08
    not the table.
  • 2:08 - 2:11
    The table has no physicality,
  • 2:11 - 2:13
    no attributes.
  • 2:13 - 2:15
It is a misconception to think
  • 2:15 - 2:18
    that You're experiencing a table.
  • 2:19 - 2:21
The table exists in name only,
  • 2:21 - 2:25
    not in actuality.
  • 2:26 - 2:30
The word table exists to identify wood,
  • 2:30 - 2:33
    in a particular form
  • 2:33 - 2:35
but the name does not belong
  • 2:35 - 2:37
    to the wood.
  • 2:38 - 2:40
    It belongs to the mind,
  • 2:40 - 2:42
    that sees the wood
  • 2:42 - 2:44
in the form of the table.
  • 2:44 - 2:46
The table is only a thought
  • 2:46 - 2:48
    that depends upon the
  • 2:48 - 2:50
    experienced wood.
  • 2:50 - 2:52
    Wood is one,
  • 2:52 - 2:55
but the possible names and forms of wood
  • 2:55 - 2:57
    are many.
  • 2:57 - 2:59
    The apparent table,
  • 2:59 - 3:01
    borrows its existence
  • 3:01 - 3:03
    from the wood,
  • 3:03 - 3:05
    the real substance,
  • 3:05 - 3:09
it is not stand alone but depends upon the wood,
  • 3:09 - 3:11
    for its existence.
  • 3:12 - 3:13
    You,
  • 3:13 - 3:15
    limitless,
  • 3:15 - 3:18
    non-dual, ever-present,
  • 3:18 - 3:20
    ordinary Awareness-Consciousness,
  • 3:20 - 3:22
    are the wood
  • 3:22 - 3:25
    of everything that is experienced.
  • 3:26 - 3:29
    You are Existence Itself.
  • 3:29 - 3:31
    Every tangible and intangible
  • 3:31 - 3:35
objects borrows its existence from You,
  • 3:35 - 3:37
    Limitless, Consciousness.
  • 3:37 - 3:40
So, when You see an object
  • 3:41 - 3:42
    gross or subtle,
  • 3:42 - 3:45
You should understand that your only seing
  • 3:45 - 3:47
    Existence-Consciousness.
  • 3:48 - 3:52
    Existence-Consciousness is You,
  • 3:52 - 3:54
    The Essence of Everything,
  • 3:54 - 3:58
so all objects are just you.
  • 3:58 - 4:01
    And since you are Existence-Consciousness
  • 4:01 - 4:04
    you're free of every object
  • 4:04 - 4:05
    including the objects
  • 4:05 - 4:07
    nearest to you,
  • 4:07 - 4:10
    your body and your mind.
  • 4:11 - 4:13
    This understanding is variously
  • 4:13 - 4:14
    called Liberation,
  • 4:14 - 4:18
    Enlightenment or Freedom.
  • 4:18 - 4:20
    It is not an experience.
  • 4:20 - 4:22
    It is knowledge extracted
  • 4:22 - 4:24
    from experience
  • 4:24 - 4:26
    by inquiry.
  • 4:27 - 4:29
If you think that Existence and Consciousness
  • 4:29 - 4:32
    are two different things,
  • 4:32 - 4:33
    try to separate one
  • 4:33 - 4:36
    from another... the other,
  • 4:36 - 4:38
    it's impossible.
  • 4:38 - 4:41
They are two words that refer to You.
  • 4:42 - 4:44
    It is your direct experience
  • 4:44 - 4:46
that you are only one being.
  • 4:47 - 4:49
    You always exist and
  • 4:49 - 4:51
    you're always conscious.
  • 4:51 - 4:54
If this is true for everyone
  • 4:54 - 4:57
then is the essence of everyone,
  • 4:57 - 4:59
    not an intrude incidental attribute
  • 4:59 - 5:03
of some aspect of You, of your being,
  • 5:03 - 5:04
    like your body.
  • 5:04 - 5:07
    Therefore, there is only one
  • 5:07 - 5:10
    person here, not many.
  • 5:10 - 5:13
    Names and forms are many
  • 5:13 - 5:14
    but the Consciousness
  • 5:14 - 5:16
    in which they depend...
  • 5:16 - 5:17
    You...
  • 5:17 - 5:18
    is One!
